Unpopular opinion (maybe?) I hate Quinn Simmons

Not as a person, I have no idea what he's actually like off-screen of course, but on TV he just comes off as a douchebag. He looks like a douchebag and every time he speaks in interviews he comes off as a douchebag. It's annoying that he gets to wear the USA Champions jersey and perpetuates stereotypes of Americans. And it's super annoying that anytime he grabs a water bottle Phil and Bob have to make a huge deal out of it.

Yes, he's a talented rider, I'm not arguing that, but he definitely comes across as someone I would have zero interest in hanging out with.

Curious if Im the only one?

[EDIT] LOL...I initially typed "Phil and Paul" instead of "Phil and Bob". That should give you an idea about how long I've been watching cycling.

Joe Friel is 82. He bought an ebike. He till thinks older cyclists should train hard

When I spoke with Joe Friel, I expected a lot of discussion about intervals, recovery and aging.

What surprised me was that early in the conversation, one of the most influential endurance coaches of the past few decades told me he had bought an e-bike.

Of course he still cared deeply about performance. He wanted to keep exploring longer rides and more terrain without every outing becoming a major training load.

That seemed to capture his broader philosophy, which I capture as adapt the tool, but do not abandon the qualities that matter.

A few things he said that stood out:

  • Older athletes often remove intensity when they should first remove unnecessary volume.
  • Hard training still matters, but it has to happen at the right point in the plan. More intensity at the wrong time is not discipline; it is bad periodization.
  • When he coached athletes, he would not keep pushing the plan forward if they had ignored the prescribed recovery or intensity structure. You cannot skip the preparation and then expect the peak workout to work.
  • Strength becomes more important with age because cycling alone does not preserve all the muscle and force production you need.
  • Recovery is not automatically “take it easy forever.” It is what allows the next important session to actually be productive.

The e-bike point made an impression on me because it is easy to interpret adaptation as surrender.

Joe seems to see it differently: use whatever helps you stay in the sport, but remain deliberate about where you still challenge yourself.

For older riders, where have you adapted—and where are you determined not to back off?

Full disclosure - I host the Ageless Athlete podcast and this came from my discussion with Joe. Thought Joe's persective is genuinely valuable, esp for masters riders amongst us. Feel free to check out the entire conversation via Apple on this link, or via Spotify, Youtue or wherever you listen.

How are some of y'all riding 4-5 days a week?

Upvotes

Note: Specifically directed towards people riding their actual bike outside, NOT indoor training.

I work a standard 9-5 job (which means I usually leave to the office around 8:15-8:30am and get home at 5:30-6:00pm depending on traffic). Have to worry about helping with preparing dinner and being present for the family after work, too, so I can't just be gone from 6:00-8:00pm (or when the sun ultimately sets). What am I missing here?

Again, I'm specifically NOT talking to the indoor riders - I understand I can wake up and do an indoor ride, but that's not exactly what I'm referring to in the title. I'm directing this post to the people who ride their actual bike outside 4-5 days a week. How??

And the clubs that have group rides at 2:00pm on a THURSDAY... do none of you work??? I'm so confused. Am I doing this all wrong? Do I need a new career?

Slasher

Someone burst both my bike’s tyres while it was locked up outside a well known shopping mall about 15km from home yesterday.

The suspect was seen on CCTV damaging my, and other, bikes.
He was identified in the shopping centre and approached about his actions which he freely admitted to.

He’s apparently a 77 year old man who lost his wife in an accident with a cyclist about 18 months ago. He was very apologetic, tearful and admitted to mental health problems for which he takes medication (but forgot that day); he allegedly offered to pay for all the repairs. The security team will pass all info to the police along with further details gleaned from their conversations with the gentleman who has immediately been barred from the shopping centre.

Should I feel guilty if I take the money?

£74 for a mobile bicycle repair-man next morning…

Do you use a bike computer or smartwatch?

For those who are not professional athletes who ride for general fitness and a hobby, do you track your rides for data? If so, do you use a bike computer or a smartwatch? Any apps alongside with it? What benefits have you noticed since implementation.

I can't stand the butt pain.

Just recently decided to start learning, an after an hour I cannot possibly put any weight on the seat. Took a four hour break, and immediately was incapable of sitting on it without immediately needing to pop back up

Edit: I should make it clear that I am a very... "large" person, and I'm on a Schwinn comfort saddle.

High Cadence feels out of control?

Hello! Runner that succumbed to a tib-fib break so now the metal makes running not feel great. Also my 4 yr old went from strider to 2 wheels this year so... We bike! I've realized I really enjoy the exercise but am struggling to build up endurance.

I prefer structured plans so I know I'm being pushed and started join. The cadence it asks for is quite high, so I find either it feels like my pedals are loose and I can barely move my legs fast enough, or in a harder gear I'm unable to get the cadence that high.

Also that being said, my legs tire out before my heart rate rises as my cardiovascular fitness is apparently still pretty good? And legs are weak from lack of use during the break (about Christmas time)

For a beginner looking to exercise and build up endurance, speed and distance in general, what's an actually reasonable cadence? Any structured plans you've found that help with legs being weaker? I feel like apps tell me to go harder than I can because of my past running stats. But I'll probably be lazy and not push myself when I 'just bike'.

19 and trying to get serious about biking. Where do I even start?

Hey all,

So I'm 19, and I've been riding casually for a couple years but I want to actually get good — like train properly, understand gear, not just wing it every time. Problem is every time I look stuff up online it's either way too technical (cadence zones, FTP, whatever) or way too basic (just "wear a helmet lol").

A little context: I've got a decent hybrid bike right now, ride maybe 3-4 times a week, mostly flat routes around my area, nothing crazy. No real structure to it though — I just go until I'm tired and come back.

Things I'm actually trying to figure out:

  • Is it worth getting a proper road bike now or should I wait until I know what kind of riding I actually like?
  • How do you build up endurance without just burning out or getting hurt? I hear a lot about overtraining but no one explains what that actually looks like day to day.
  • Nutrition/hydration stuff — do I need to be thinking about this seriously at my level or is that overkill for someone who isn't racing?
  • Any beginner mistakes you wish someone had told you about before you learned the hard way?

I'm not trying to become a pro or anything, I just don't want to plateau in six months because I built bad habits early. If anyone's been where I am and figured this out, I'd genuinely appreciate the wisdom. Even just "here's what I wish I knew at 19" would help a ton.

Thanks in advance, this sub has been a goldmine just from lurking.

Even a small suggestion would help a lot Thanks!!!

Who’s at fault here?

Had a close call on today’s ride and wondered what other cyclists think.
I was approaching a crossroads and wanted to turn right. I checked over my right shoulder, moved towards the centre of my lane, and put my right arm out to signal. I saw nothing coming in the oncoming lane so I went to make my turn when I heard a car behind me suddenly accelerate, so I instinctively looked over my shoulder again. Sure enough, the driver had pulled into the oncoming lane and was overtaking me on my right, despite me clearly signalling and positioning to turn right.
I aborted the turn and let him pass, otherwise I’m sure I’d be on his bonnet!
Did I do everything correctly, or is there anything I could have done differently? Is this just one of those situations where a driver made a poor decision?

How to minimize fitness losses during surgery recovery?

I had been training with the goal of improving my long distance endurance (doing a mix of indoor trainer and outdoor rides). I had a recent crash which resulted in me fracturing my wrist and needing surgery to set the bone. Unfortunately I am struggling a lot with with being unable to ride as cycling training was my current life goal I was working on outside of work. That feeling is made even worse when I realize I am likely going to lose a good bit of my cycling fitness after being off the bike for some unknown amount of months. Is there anything I can do to minimize the fitness loss or is it a part of the surgery recovery I cannot avoid?

Biker (motorcycle) question

Have ever been passed by motorcyclists and they act like they're pedaling their bikes? I've seen it many times and I just wave. But I wonder, are they poking fun or is it a nod to their two wheeled friends?

Edit: Just to add that it's never a solo rider on a Honda. It's always a group on a Harley or crotch rocket.

Giro 2027

Upvotes

Hello Guys, I will be in Italy from 10th - 22th of May 2027. I realized that the Giro will be racing throughout my trip.

Does anyone know any tourism company / group that does cycling to the mountains to watch the Giro?

Or maybe some rental place where I can rent a road bike and follow the Giro?

Is there special technique for sprinting in cycling, or is it basically just going as hard as you can?

Upvotes

I didn’t grow up riding bikes that much (just here and there), but I did do soccer and other sports, so while jogging/running/sprinting on two feet comes very naturally to me, I’m learning bike skills as I go.

In adult life, I got into distance running, so on a bike I’m comfortable with riding on the flats (just keep pedaling), and climbing (just keep pedaling), but sprinting is something that I’m not sure about.

I recently went hard on a little incline near the end of my ride. I got a couple new power PRs:

5 second power: 775w

15 second power: 675w

But I have a feeling I could get those numbers higher. My buddy says I should be able to hit 1000w …

On that sprint, it’s like a 5-6% grade. It felt like my front wheel was actually lifting off the ground as I went hard. It got me thinking: Maybe I don’t know how to correctly sprint on a bike…

When sprinting, is it better to be in the drops? When I see pros sprint, I see their bikes moving side to side quite a bit, which, coming from a running background is strange to me, as you want as your energy moving straight forward…

Does sprinting have to be up out of the saddle, or can you do it seated?

Anyone have tips for sprinting? Looking for good advice you’ve gotten, or also youtube videos or things like that…

Video Recommendations

Morning, all. I want to build an understanding of my bike and work on it myself instead of having to take it in. I appreciate the work the guys do on my baby, but I’m on it too much now to depend on others.

Do you have any YouTube video recommendations? Any book recommendations?

Thanks a ton! Happy cycling!

Cracking sounds during riding

Bike is Scott Addict 10 (2020), lately I'm hearing some cracking sounds when I pedal. Sounds like there's a screw not fully tighten. A bit annoying when riding. Usually heard when pushing harder and it seems it's coming from the front end of the bike.
How to find out what causing it when the bike is not moving?
Did you have any cases like this and found what's causing it without a full service?

Canyon CF 7 AXS ($2600) vs Domane AL 5 ($2100)?

I’m looking to get a better bike for my wife who wants to do more road biking to eventually do a triathlon. Originally we were looking at the Domane AL 5 for $2100 as a basic aluminum frame bike with 105, but I saw this Canyon CF 7 AXS for $2600 which has full carbon and electronic shifting.

I know there’s a big difference from quality carbon vs cheap carbon and canyon has some other problems, but I also know that a lot of people love Canyon. $500 more for full carbon and electronic shifting seems like a good deal. I haven’t seen any other well known company offer this under $3k.

Anyone have any thoughts on which to go for?

Adult learner struggling to learn cycling— did anyone else take weeks/months?

I m a 33 year old Female struggling to learn to ride. Its my dream and goal for 2026 to ride a bike and I cant get it.

I have tried to ride with my husband, 2 sessions with cycle Toronto and couple of sessions on my own. I dont have any friend who can help me holding the bike while I ride.

I have a watched thousands of videos but nothing helped. Last time, I tried I was able to take my second foot on the pedal, while starting from 2’o clock position( how the instructor told me), I felt my legs were too crammed, my bike seat is at the lowest and I think that can be a reason too?

I will adjust my seat and try again this weekend. If any of you have any suggestions, I will highly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Starting cycling training, how do I balance weightlifting and cycling?

I recently got motivated to get good at cycling and in general improve my cardio, but I am having a hard time fitting everything into one week while not having to deal with insane fatigue.
My current idea for my routine is the following:

3x weightlifting full body on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (2 sets per muscle each session, to failure)
3x Zone 2 indoors cycling sessions (2 hours, 2 sessions have a sprint interval at the end and 1 has a VO2 max interval)
1 rest day

Motivation and time isn't a problem but I'm worried fatigue will accumulate and hinder my performance and progress. I planned to do more like a 1h Zone 2 at the end of each weightlifting session but I think I'm already at the upper of what I can do before fatigue starts ruining my gains.

FYI: I'm 16, 72 kg, 183 cm and have done primarily weightlifting for 2 years already, cardio sucks tho :(

Any tips on what I should change or do?

threaded crank, should i put good wahoo pedals in them?

i have an old indoor Keiser m3 and i want to put my wahoo power pedals in them to track my power.

i took the old pedal off the Keiser m3 and noticed they dont smoothly go in and out after taking the initial tightness off. I put the wahoo one in and again needed to use alan key to put it in the whole time. ( I couldnt use my hand). I then pedaled and the wahoo worked fine. BUT. I took them out again because Ive realised since they don't go in and out smoothly maybe the crank on the keiser is cross threaded and putting the wahoo pedals in might damage the wahoo pedals.

Let me know what I should do. again the wahoos did go in and worked fine, but just wondering if there's any damage potential to the wahoo if putting into a worn out crank.

Magene C706 Review

I recently purchased Magene C706 bike computer and would like to share my honest review with you all today. I bought it with my own money and I am not affiliated with Magene.

I started cycling 4 months ago and never had a bike computer before, so this review is from the perspective of a beginner and I cannot compare with other bike computers out there.

Why I chose this model?
I did some research and ultimately chose Magene C706 mainly for its offline navigation capability and price. From my brief research, other lower Magene models don’t have offline navigation capability. I read that one drawback of Magene’s bike computers is that they don’t have bike-specific paths, but I live in Bangkok Thailand, so it’s not an issue for me since it’s 100% road for me.

Problem:
I purchased from Magene Official Store on Shopee (global store not the local Thailand store) and it took 7 days to arrive from China. It arrived defective. The GPS didn’t work so I couldn’t see speed, distance, or location. I spent a lot of time trying everything from upgrading firmware, reverting firmware, resetting, redownloading maps, restarting, etc. Nothing worked. I contacted Magene and they asked me to take the unit out in the open and record a video of it for 2 minutes. It still couldn’t lock onto GPS.

Solution:
They immediately shipped out a replacement unit that same day. It took 8 days to arrive and this new one works perfectly without any issue. They let me keep the defective unit, so I gave it to my father. It still pairs well with all sensors so it’s still pretty useful if you buy speed and cadence separately. Thank you Magene for the great and extremely quick customer service.

Experience:
I love it. It came with a screen protector and a case. I love being able to customize every page. You can choose many different kinds of layouts and assign whatever data you want to see to each box. It starts up super fast and the touch screen is vibrant and very responsive. I pair it with Magene L508 radar rear light and it works great with that too. I also have it paired with Assioma Pro RS-2 power meter pedals, my Di2 (mainly to see battery) and a smart watch for heart rate data broadcast. Everything works flawlessly. They all connect automatically when I start riding. After a ride, the bike computer can automatically upload to Strava.

Let me know if you have any question about this model. Again, I have no experience with other bike computers but this one is superb.

Tyres - Help

Hi all,

I've only recently taken an interest in actually learning about bikes and I'm looking at buying my first set of new tyres.

I'm riding a Marin DSX 1 and I'm planning on going for a short bikepacking trip down dedicated cycle paths (paved the whole way with a smidge of gravel). It currently has the stock WTB Riddler tyres on but I'd like to upgrade.

I've been looking around at Schwalbe, Gravel King, Maxxis and many more.

It's all a bit overwhelming and there's so many buzzwords and different types of tires to navigate. Like working out how Gravel and Cyclo-cross tyres differ.

So I'm coming to the fountain of all knowledge, Reddit!

I am looking for:

-700x45mm (max clearance)

-Puncture resistance (I live in a city and often wind up dodging glass so the beefier the better)

-Clincher tyres (I'm not ready for tubeless just yet)

-Comfort; I'm not concerned about speed or rolling resistance, I just want to have a nice smooth ride

-Good tread! I once rode slicks and it was awful, I like grip and resilience

-Budget isn't too big of an issue, I'd rather buy once and cry once

Helpful tips and educational advice is welcome :)

Do your thing Reddit!!

Speed sensor inaccuracy issue

Upvotes

I have an IGPSPORT BSC 300t that I've been using with a speed sensor on the front hub during my indoor rides on rollers. I have the computer set to indoor mode with gps off, and the wheel size calibrated accurately. When I'm riding, the speed displayed on the computer seems correct, but it says my average speed is whatever the max speed was. For example, if I reach a speed of 25 mph, the avg jumps up to that, and as a result the distance is much further than it should be. Has anyone else had this issue before and been able to resolve it? I just tried updating the firmware on the computer and it didn't fix it. Thank you

preparing new chain for waxing- is it really necessary to let it sit in degreasing fluid?

trying to get rid of shimanos factory grease as good as possible. I'm using either mineral spirit or isopropanol filled in a small airtight container, high enough to fully cover the chain. after a few minutes I shake the container, then replace the fluid. repeating the whole process for 3-4 times

I see other people however who cover the chain with degreasing fluid and let it rest over night. is that necessary to get the chain completely blank?
