Is bike theft common around Wollongong/Australia? If so, what are some budget locks you would recommend?

I’m looking at buying like a city commuting bike (nothing crazy, just gentle exercise if you will) in Brisbane, and come across Second-Hand Electra Amsterdam sport d9, 9 speed in metallic green (2009 special) for about $250 - there’s nothing wrong with it (like perfectly functional & no rust etc looks great) I’m wondering if this is worth it? Recommendations? I just love the colour and look of it. I’m about 5’6/7, but I’ve had 2 major surgeries in the past 2 years so I just want some basic exercise.

Newbie cyclist here.

I've just recently started cycling to commute to work.

90% of the ride is pretty much flat road but there's a bit of an uphill that goes for maybe 100/200m.

Every time I get to that street I get taken over by at least 5-10 bikes lol.

I feel so slow and I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or I'm still adjusting to cycling as well.

Am I doing it correctly by putting it on the lowest gear (1) setting for the rear gear? Do I need to change gear or change the front gear as well? My front gear is just in the middle and I don't usually change it.

Is this just a skill issue for me to pedal harder lol?

I'm looking to get into cycling, and the first thing I need is a new bike. My main intention is to commute to and from work, which is approximately a 20-minute ride, but I'd also like to use the bike for a potential sprint triathlon in the future, as I'm an avid runner.

I have a few questions, but please feel free to share any tips or tricks as I have no idea what I'm getting myself into!

1. Should I buy a new bike worth around $2,000? (My reasoning is that it would be safer and already of good quality IE carbon fibre.)
2. Or should I buy a used bike for a fraction of the price of a new one? (My main concern is safety.)
3. I know I'll need to learn about fixing punctures and putting together a servicing kit, but is there anything else I should keep in mind when making my first purchase?

For context - budget was $1000 or less.

I bike ride to and from work and gym, then for for fun on weekends.

Mostly pavement, roads and the occasional gravel road.

I would love to extend my budget, but $1000 is my limit.

I've long been a hard tail rider, but recently bought my first dual suspension enduro bike for more bike park and trail riding. But, I used to really enjoy using my hard tail to do long distance rides on bicycle paths and the like, around the city - but, it's pretty old now so I'm looking to get possibly a hybrid bike to take it's place, seeing as they're probably better for longer distances anyway but still have the same feel as a hard tail mountainbike (without the chunky tyres). I've only been looking briefly so far and still quite like Silverback and Merida, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for other brands that are worth looking at? I'm keeping an open mind but the more info I have the better - only criteria I do have is I'd like to maintain for suspension at the front in case I want to go offroad at any point. Easy enough to lock it out most of the time but I'd still like the option seeing as some of the areas I'll be riding in will have sections where it makes sense to go offroad to link up with trails or bike paths that otherwise don't link up.

Sydney has OK cycling infrastructure, There are lots biking paths but none really connect and some just end abruptly, or have you go onto main roads and back streets. It lacks a dedicated/marked tourist loop that Melbourne has ( Capital City Trail).

I’m trying to come up with something that can see most of Sydney in half a day that any level of cyclist can do.

Hi all, looking for a MTB carrier with a hitch connection that supports around 2-3 MTBs sized at 27.5/29”. What do people recommend these days or what are the “go to’s”? Some sort of locking feature might be good, so you don’t need to watch your car like a hawk if you park it, likewise might make an opportunistic person think twice.

Ideally not looking for something too expensive, but understand quality isn’t great for the cheaper stuff.

I’ve seen that some people aren’t happy for example with build quality for the cheaper stuff like JB Racks.

I recently picked up a Reid Pro Hardtail and I'm not happy with the performance of the brakes but I'm not sure if my expectations are too high.

I assembled and adjusted the thing myself, I've followed along with a bunch of YouTube videos on adjusting mechanical disk brakes but I can't seem to get any more performance out of them.

The brakes lock the wheels if I'm walking alongside the bike but when I'm in the saddle they don't lock, they just slowly bring me to a stop. If I had to emergency brake there is no way I'd avoid an incident, they barely control the speed wh n going down a hill. For reference I'm 78kg so I don't think weight is an issue.

After exhausting tutorials on how to adjust the brakes I reluctantly turned to chatgpt - it's diagnosis is inadequate friction due to poor or contaminated brake pads.

I've contacted Reid (Bikes online) and am waiting to hear back from them.

My question for the group is around my expectations. Are they too high? Should the brakes be performing better than this?

I understand that this is an entry level bike in a box but I would assume the brakes should still be able to bring the bike to a stop on a decline which they aren't capable of doing.

Any thoughts, suggestions etc while I wait to hear back from Bikes Online would be appreciated

Pretty new to e-bikes and trying to do as much research as possible before pulling the trigger. Bike will mostly be used for commuting and riding too / from the beach with my one year old on the back in a child seat. Work commute is 7km each way; local rides will be 2-3 km max. Commute is pretty flat, but I live on a very steep hill, and will have my little one on the back, so need something with enough grunt to get me up it - especially at the weekends when we'll be out and about.

I like the idea of a reputable brand motor so seems Bosh is the way to go, but open to other suggestions. Looking at some Cube models, a Kalkhoff and Lekker and trying to weight up the pros and cons. Would really appreciate hearing if anyone owns any of the below - especially the Cubes as Aussie based reviews seem difficult to find

Budget is about 4k so the Kalkohoff is a bit of a pipe dream... but I do love the idea of a belt drive:

The technical Specs all seem to align with what I want but the online review all seem to say it's underpowered.... also Bafeng Motor which seems to have a decent reputation but not as good as Bosch?

Tried them all today. Cube I rode felt cranky and badly built...maybe the shop (staff all seemed about 19 years old) but just not nice. Gear changes were noisy and hard work.

Went to another shop to try the others ....Lekker looked beautiful but was just underpowered. Kalkoff was like driving something on rails. Premium, snappy, just a pleasure to ride. Shame it's so expensive!! Lug and carry bike I rode was nice. Great power delivery but again...super expensive!

Hey everyone, I'm someone who is looking to get into casual fitness riding roughly twice a week. I just moved towards Melbourne and live near Beach Road, so looking for a bike that is mostly pavement but I will dabble into some general gravel riding with my old man who has a GIANT ROAM 4 Hybrid.

Went into 99 bikes the other day (didn't know where to go tbh) and they recommended the Merida Crossway 300 or Merida Speeder 200. I wanted to hear some opinions regarding the difference, or if anyone has any other general recommendations for a good bike? I borrows my uncles bike a couple of years ago and was getting up to around 40km distance (not much I know) so that gives an idea as to what kinda length I'll be travelling.

Moving from acoustic to e-bike after the arrival of our little one and wanting to cycle to work / daycare. Want a decent long term daily rider for commuting about 7-8 km each way for work and drop off our little one in Sydney. I live in Bondi on the steepest street in the neighbourhood and looking closely at the Lekker Jordaan GTS. Seems to have everything we want in an e-bike for the commute and general cruising around the neighbourhood but I’m concerned about it's hill climbing ability. From the limited reviews online seems most people are pretty happy with it but I'd appreciate any input from people that already own them. My concern is that 1) Hill climbing ability seems to be questionable, and 2) It's expensive for a bike that doesn't have front suspension. I appreciate I’m getting a mid-drive motor with belt drive / internal gearing and expect to pay a premium for it; and with the current laws in NSW limiting speeds to 25 KMPH point 2 may not be so relevant - but trying to sanity check the decision before spending over 4k on a ride when I seem to be able to get similar non belt-driven options for half the price. I’ve moved about 45km away from my CBD.

I’ve gone for long rides (~50km in total) on my steal frame road bike and I only average around 17-20km/h.

Ideally to cover 45km (or a 90km round trip) - I’d want to average 25-30km/h - and also be relatively comfortable.

I’m trying to decide between a long range ebike vs recumbent bike vs recumbent trike.

The trike is least favoured as parking will be an issue.

E-bikes are also restricted to 25km/h (are you legally allowed to go quicker if you are capable with pedal assist? And if so is easy to do, or just as tiresome above 25km/h?)

This is merely for a social trip/maybe get a few groceries.

What kind of bike would you recommend to someone of average fitness to cover this distance in a faster way?
