Anyone have recs for a good, chill group ride on Sunday? Visiting from the west coast and need to stay up on my triathlon training. Aiming for 25-35 miles.

Much of this comment section is cursed. It’s wild to see such a common sentiment of “all these wannabe cyclists blah blah blah” but a lack of awareness for cars and peds never following similar rules. Obviously there are jerks who basically race during park “rush hours”, which is obviously not cool, but the overall entitlement in these comments is crazy.

Someone stole my bike out of our common area in our building in Park Slope. I know not to expect much in this scenario, but in case anyone sees it in person or on FB Marketplace or Craigslist, please DM me. I built it from the frame up - a real Bike Jumble special, and I'm holding out hope for a miracle. Thank you all!

This article (https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/04/25/yes-cyclists-can-go-on-red-with-walk-sign-city-confirms-in-court ) talks about the LPI exception where bikes can go through the intersection when the pedestrian signal says “walk”. What if there is no pedestrian signal for the intersection and they can always go (yellow arrow)? Can a cyclist go through this light when it’s red (blue arrow)?

There were 12 of us on the second ride and we're hoping more will join this time.

Our Goal:

1. Get people out on bikes for a chill, no-drop ride (5-6 miles, we try to keep it under 45 minutes)
2. We’ll specifically plan routes that highlight "the gaps"—areas where a protected lane should be or where connections to other parts of Queens are missing.

The Vibe:
This is for the commuter, the weekend rider, and the person who wishes the current infrastructure allowed them to feel safe the entire way from Sunnyside to Astoria (or other nearby neighborhood) and back. We ride together for safety and stay together the whole time.

The Details:

• When: Wednesday 7/22 at 6:15pm, we'll have some time for intros before we start the ride at 6:30pm
• Meeting Point: 40th St & Queens Blvd under the 7 train

Last time a bunch of us grabbed a drink afterwards so bring your bike lock if you'd like to join.

We're trying to do this ride every 2 weeks, just in case you can't make it this time and are wondering about the next ride.

Where do people train when they're training for a 30mile, 40mile, 50 mile, and 100mile rides uninterrupted? Is it possible to do in NYC?

I'm in Forest Hills and one my ~20+mile bike route is riding on the queens blvd > Queens bridge > loop around central park > back on queens bridge > back on queens blvd.

But that bike route is painful given there so many traffic lights on queens blvd and then riding across major thorough streets (while doable), you always have to keep alert because you can't trust any of these drivers. Even when there's dedicated bike paths like queens blvd, you can't trust anyone. it's just too sketchy.

Where do people go to ride 30-50 miles uninterrupted and safe here? is it not feasible here? Do i have to just deal with it? drive somewhere out?

(Also I am looking for group rides that I can train with. I am pretty novice at the moment, but looking to improve)

Cyclist Permission to Deviate from Some Traffic Control Devices

Amend section 4-12(p) allowing cyclists to:

• Follow Pedestrian Control Signals when crossing an intersection, except where otherwise indicated by traffic control devices, and provided that the cyclist yields to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

• Turn on Red Signal: Cyclist must stop and yield to pedestrians and, if merging into a travel lane, yield to oncoming traffic on the intersecting street turning onto an intersecting street during a steady red light. Under this proposed rule, a cyclist may not turn across opposing lanes of traffic.

• Proceed through red signal/stop signs at “Top of the T”: Cyclist must stop and yield to pedestrians before being allowed to proceed through red signal indication or Stop sign at “top of the T” locations.

There's no guarantee they'll actually implement these changes, but its inclusion is a good sign. The changes were originally proposed at the tail end of the De Blasio admin and then stayed on the DOT agenda for a few years without any action before being dropped during Adams' term. It's nice to see them again.

Was riding in Central Park this morning 5:45 am and got plowed by an e bike over by 62nd street and 2nd avenue at 7:30 am.

The e bike rider rode off without stopping to check on me (speaks to their character). I had the right of way to cross the intersection but the e-bike came out of nowhere and hit the front part of my bike damaging my left brake. Apparently the e bike was not in the bike lane and ran the red light at what imagine was over 20 MPH if I had to guess

Went to ER and got a cat scan but got 7 staples from a laceration to back of my head. A little sore in my lower back but miraculously everything else is ok.

Is it worth filing a police report? Still at the ER and police still have yet to show up to the ER.

Just took a regular Citi Bike 1 mile. I’m not a member, but decided to bike instead of waiting for a subway to get to Atlantic Terminal.

I cannot believe how bad of a ride it was. $5 unlock fee for a terrible product.

I know I’m just ranting but this is crazy. I should have just ran. Would have gotten me there in the same amount of time, been just as sweaty, and would have saved $5.

End rant.

We're both on this really wide sidewalk; on my left are the apartments, i'm in the middle, on my right is a guy riding a stolen Citi Bike that's wrapped up in electrical tape. I already have a bad impression of this cyclist because he already did some stupid stuff to cut through a red light earlier.

I'm a few feet behind him (2 or 3 feet left of him). Halfway down the block, he turns left to go into an apartment complex front courtyard. He doesn't check before he turns; he just turns.

I try to stop, but not fast enough, my front hits his back wheel, and he tumbles. I catch myself. He starts cursing and yelling; it looked like he was fine since he was standing, yelling, and cursing, so I just ride off.

I'm not sure what level of fault is. If we were both going straight, things would just be fine. If this was cars, and he came into my lane and I t-boned him, he would be at fault for not yielding to my right of way. This is not really typical of me, I tend to be more of a defensie rider, but I was trying to get to my destination before the rain came.

Last weekend an old woman asked me to help her remove an abandoned bike that was blocking her trashcans. Bike was unlocked and seemed to be missing some parts, but would love to get it back to it's owner if it wasn't truly abandoned. Saw two ambulances tending to cyclists in Central Park around 5:30pm today. One looked really nasty: the person was immobile with a gurney sitting right next to them. Has anyone heard anything about the crashes? Stay safe everyone!

New to NYC biking, I bought a second hand Trek fx3 and looking for a lock.

I'll keep my bike inside most of the time, planning to use it on occasional joy rides and weekends.

How should I protect it so I can know it's safe if I grab lunch mid trip or something along those lines?

Quick disclosure up front: this is my own app, I built it solo, so yeah — this is self-promo. Rather say it than pretend otherwise.

For context, I'm not in NYC. I'm a dev in Paris and I ride the bike-share here every morning. The thing that drove me nuts was walking to my dock and finding it empty — or getting to the other end and circling for an open dock. The official apps show you availability right now, but you have to remember to open them, and at rush hour a dock empties out in five minutes.

So I built Vely for myself. Core idea: you set up your usual trip once — your home dock, your rough departure time. Then in the morning, before you head out, it checks your dock and sends a little briefing: how many bikes (and e-bikes) are there live, the weather, a countdown. Then it pings you when it's actually time to leave. You can set that anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes ahead depending on your walk to the dock.

Once you're riding, on a recent iPhone it stays on the lock screen / Dynamic Island: bikes at your start dock, open docks at your destination, without reopening the app.

It also auto-tracks rides (distance, CO₂, calories, little streaks/badges) and has the usual live map, but honestly the departure alert is the whole point.

Why I'm posting here: it already works with Citi Bike (and ~1,400 networks worldwide), so I'm genuinely curious whether the "leave now" ping is useful in NYC specifically — your dock churn and e-bike scarcity are a different beast than Paris. If Citi Bike riders want to try it and tear it apart, I'm all ears.

Two honest notes:

– iOS only for now. Android's in progress but not out yet, not going to pretend otherwise.

– Free to start (live map + one proactive trip, no time limit). There's an optional ~$2.99/mo tier for multiple trips, the Live Activity and widgets — saying it for transparency, it's not the point of the post.

Mostly after feedback: does a proactive "leave now" alert actually solve anything for you, or do Transit / the Lyft app already cover it? What's missing?

Around four days ago I was biking on the college point boulevard street on flushing, when I tried to go up this driveway to dismount and walk, I ended up feeling the tire brushing against the floor like it was brushing against an elevated sidewalk the bike could never go up, and really quickly I ended up falling face first on the ground hitting my cheekbone, lips and breaking a tooth. What’s most terrifying to me is that I don’t know why and what happened, I’ve repeated the scenario in my head countless times trying to make sense of it, and nothing

If anyone has gone through something like this and has any answers I’d appreciate it, as I feel now like I’m not even able to ride a bike properly or take any type of turns

Another day, another cop parking in the bike lane while they get a sandwich.

So Sunday afternoon I biked from Jersey to Manhattan via the Gothals bridge and the ferry. Maybe I'm insane but I don't get why people worry about Richmond Terrace. I'd love more bike lane but it's good enough for the level of traffic.

My one concern was a lot of gravel and glass as certain segments and of course pot holes. But the rubbish correlates with population density and a few people with brooms could solve this.

Anyway, think we can organize something whereby people sweep the street. Maybe pay some bodegas to sweep in front of their block once a day or even just let any do gooder idiot with a bike helmet to borrow a broom and pail.

If we become a big enough presence we could sell merch and raise money and get permission to paint more yellow circles where bikes are allowed on the sidewalk by the Gothals. Maybe even get permission to fill some potholes with cold patch.

But anyway let's start with sweeping up gravel and glass and seeing if sanitation will pick up bags from our efforts.
