Greeting traveler! Welcome to the subreddit dedicated to League of Legend's best Yordle thing! If you've just picked up Gnar or are new to the sub lemme hook you up with some sweet links to quickly help get you to a competent place with Gnar.

WARNING: if you post a "new to Gnar, any tips?" thread it will be deleted and you will be notified of its deletion as well as redirected here. If you're new and have a question try playing 5 games with your question in mind before you ask it here. The same goes for "Why can't I get an S/S+" (for which the answer is always "your farm is too low"). We're a very welcoming community but if we are to grow then basic questions cannot populate our page

Also make yourself familiar with our subreddit's rules on the sidebar, especially the shitposting one. I'm very serious about that one

Also also Snow Day Gnar comes out every winter, so you'll just have to be patient if you want that skin

Beginner's Guide to Gnar

Gnar has a highly variable playstyle which needs to change based on what form you're in as well as what champion your opponent is playing. In general, however, each form has a basic strategy which is adapted for the lane matchup

In Mini, you'll look to poke down your opponent through your ranged auto attacks before going all-in with a Mega Gnar combo. Most top laners are melee, which means that with good footwork (not the keystone Fleet Footwork) you'll be able to get incremental free poke at very low risk. Good footwork cannot be understated though, and for that reason it's advised that you use your "A" key to learn your maximum attack range at the various stages of the game (Mini Gnar's attack range scales with levels, and is therefore not static). You're squishy in Mini form though, so you're voulnerable to being all-in'ed yourself.

Utilizing your Q effectively is key to mastering Gnar. When it hits an enemy (minion or champion) it'll do reduced damage to all enemies hit after the first one and it will also immediately begin to return, and this return path is calculated by your movement direction immediately before it began its return path. Catching your Q is pretty important, because your early attack range in Mini is quite short, so you'll frequently find yourself using Q to CS safely. Try to always catch your Q if doing so doesn't put you in immediate danger of getting rekt. Poking with Q can also be tricky in Mini because throwing out Qs will often result in incidental shoving of the wave towards your opponent. Sometimes this is good, like when you're looking to poke the enemy under their tower so that you can dive them or force them to back because they're too low. Often times though, if you're not careful, you'll end up putting the wave under their tower when you're perfectly comfortable CS'ing under tower (Nasus). Use your Q to CS, use it to poke, use it to shove waves in, but knowing when you're doing each and why is the key.

Your W is your key source of damage against tanks, and is therefore one of your most invaluable tools against champions like Cho'Gath. You'll often proc this through an auto-attack (AA) > Q > AA combo. You can also get a ring of W from jumping on someone with your E, but please, for the love of god, don't use your E just to get a stack of W. It's never worth it unless you're absolutely SURE you can kill. It also gives an attack speed buff if you bounce off of someone, so you might find yourself hopping away from someone to get out of a sticky situation and then (if you have FM/BC) turning right back to them and kiting with your increased attack speed until you're shredding them! This is super situational though, and it's almost always best to just save it for an escape or to engage before turning into Mega.

Your E is the most skill-intensive ability that Gnar has, simply because it has such a long cooldown. Giving up your E because you mispositioned early can be game-changing, because you no longer have the ability to play forward in lane (because you can't E away from a gank), and using your E when both teams are positioning for a teamfight means that you'll probably have to flash if you want to be your team's initiator.

In Mega, you're either starting fights, or you're ending them - ideally both by the time you're done Hulking out. Mega Gnar is a form which is prone to being bullied because he's melee. He has very few tools to trade. He does have combo tools though, and this is the niche you have to play into when you're Mega. Don't be afraid to go from an annoying lane bully in Mini to a very shy tower-hugging Mega Gnar back into an annoying lane bully 15 seconds later. Diving the enemy team in Mega is priority #1 in teamfights, BUT, if you have no rage and your team engages or gets engaged on, you'll have to play a more DPS-centric ADC-like role. One of the most important parts about playing Gnar is not to get hung-up on the idea that you have to be Mega Gnar to be useful in teamfights. That said though, here's how to make the most out of Mega's abilities.

Mega Q makes you commit to walking all the way over to the boulder after you throw it in order to get the cooldown reset. Keep this in mind if you're doing something like throwing your Q at a Darius, because you're gonna need to walk over to Darius to get that back, and he's not gonna let you get that back for free. It's AOE on impact, so throwing it out on a wave of caster minions should let you kill them with basically 1 auto attack each or a mega W on all 3.

Mega W is super telegraphed, so your only real targets are slow champs and people you've already stunned with your ult. Don't use this against champs like Fiora unless she's already used Riposte, and try not to rely on this stun landing if your opponent has a dash. Your Mega E's slow does assist in landing this though because Mega E slows in and AOE. If you do land this, you can weave in an auto attack right after the animation ends before you throw out a Q to squeeze in a bit more DPS in combos.

Mega E doesn't double jump unless you transform into mega during the middle of the E, so its range is basically halved. Just like in Mini, don't waste this.

Your R is pretty simple. You can only use it when you're Mega and it stuns if you throw the enemy into a wall. If you can learn to animation cancel it from your E, that's awesome, but it's not even close to something you need to learn to be succesful on Gnar. Just make sure you're setting yourself up to be in Mega when your team is looking to teamfight or when your jungler is coming for a gank/dive. All opponents are sent to the same distance away, regardless of how far away from you they were when you ulted them.

BASIC COMBOS

  • Your basic poke combo is: AA > Q > AA for the W proc (in Mini)
  • Ult combo is typically (in Mega) R > Q > W > AA - Note that the animation for Q can be shortened if you press W right after
  • Extended Damage ult combo (for lane fights) (in Mega) R > AA > W > AA > Q

Some posts seem to be getting deleted randomly, and I'm not entirely sure why. I will try to approve posts that I see are being removed that shouldn't be, and have lowered the spam filter and confirmed that automod is not causing the problems. If your post was deleted for a reason, mods will typically leave a comment explaining why.

Edit: Went back through looking for deleted posts, it seems most of them were because of the spam filter. Hopefully this problem won't happen in the future...

QUESTION Best runes for current season?

I watched Coach Chippys' 2024 guide, in the rune section his main rune was Grasp, then fleet and conqueror but now i see most gnars this season pick either LT or Fleet.

What happened to Grasp? Which situation should i pick LT, fleet or conqueror?

QUESTION Krank nach glow Stack ?

Hallo zusammen,
leichte Schmerzen beim Schlucken
Kopfschmerzen, teilweise eher brennend
Vielen Dank!

QUESTION How to play against duelists/fiora type champs

There was an old post but its wildly outdated, im playing ranked 5's and we like threw me on top. I have over 300 games on gnar and almost always stomp flex games but this fiora one trick was able to react to my r with her w, and I lost laning phase to her through conitunally trying to reset vitals and then taking even trades but being unable to finish it out since she would recall. was only down 10cs till she just 100-0'd me when she bought hydra, what do I do against the sustain and the champ itself?

QUESTION I'm a new support gnar player and i can't figure out how to have mega when i actually need it

Disclaimer, i want to play him support since most support item do give hp and do feel amazing on him and being able to switch between poke and engage feels amazing, i just don't understand how do i make sure to actually have mega when i will need it, am i supposed to 99% it till a fight happens or should i try to get the full meter in fight? Especially in early game i can't really tell how close or far i am to mega but i do know some people got to Diamond with this pick and i can kinda see why

Tldr: support main trying to get rage in time for big fights both in lane and out of lane

GUIDE/DISCUSSION Has anyone had good games vs Jax or Heimer

I’m losing faith in gnar cause of stuff like Jax QAAW combo doing so much damage to mini letting him gatekeep wave and a majority of the lane using e to win trade then repeating QAAW to chunk me hard.

Similarly with heimer I feel like I always lose lane and I just have to stay afloat then make up for it with macro plays to win.

I am just not sure how to win these matchups consistently, I feel like with a good enemy laner you just lose to Jax as gnar in lane and then he will have really high macro value after lane especially if he kneecapped your cs/min.

Any thoughts or strategies that yall have found to work? or are yall feeling the same right now?

NEWS Gnar WEAK in SoloQ but STRONG in Pro Play!

This champ is so dogshit no matter how well I play on this champion I just can't carry with him. EVERY game on this champ is a fight of the life time.

I've had easier times carrying with Yasuo than with Gnar its crazy. No matter what I do in the sides lanes, help with objectives, make good plays happen, secure early game kills I just can't win.

Pro players are able to make him work so easily and its so frustrating. I'm just tired bro. What am I doing wrong?

I have a 75% winrate on Yasuo but my winrate with Gnar is 33%.

GUIDE/DISCUSSION Would you accept gnar be reworked if this means he is less pro play oriented?

We all knows that Gnar is balanced around Pro play and this can lead for him to feels it takes so much effort for soloq players to make him strong in soloq. But would you okay if Riot changed some core feature to make him less played in pro play or you prefer him to stay like this even if riot will never favor him in meta?

QUESTION Do you ever have to genuinely blame your teammates?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I'm very patient when playing, at most i get down or sad when i lose very bad, but i hate the very idea of getting genuinely tilted and mad at any videogame... still, when my botlane somehow loses against a volibear support in ranked and keep killing themselves i just leave in awe.

Is there a chance i could ever genuinely just blame my luck? I'd like to hear some of your worst or funniest experiences where a teammate was just so atrocious it was amazing

GUIDE/DISCUSSION E start Lethal Tempo Doran's Bow Barrier Gnar

Posting about troll builds is fun and all, but here is one setup that is genuinely accepted by high ELO Gnar OTPs and that has demonstrably shown results.

There is some variation among these, but the general idea is: Lethal Tempo, E start, combat summoner spell (no TP), offensive starting item.

You will be surprised at how stat-checky this is level 1. Everyone knows that Kayle level 1 is unexpectedly OP, but why is that? It's because her passive gives her 30% attack speed, and her E is a passive 15 magic damage on-hit with an auto reset. Compare this to E start Gnar: 40% attack speed for 6 seconds. You don't have on-hit, but you do have range and a dash to space out the enemy top. Lethal Tempo damage scales with your attack speed, you can see where this is going.

Don't believe me? What comes to your mind when you think "OP level 1 champion"? Is Darius with Ignite and Conqueror suitable for you? Here is him getting absolutely melted by E start LT Bow Gnar. I thought the bleed would not kill so I did not Barrier, but if I did, we would not have traded 1-for-1. It's not just for melee champions either, with this setup you will melt Aurora, Vayne and Varus top in an ooga booga 1v1 100% of the time.

I can confirm this works against numerous so-called "strong level 1 champions" like Wukong, Riven, W start Grasp Illaoi, Jayce. As long as your spacing is good, and you E bounce on top of them to continue kiting, you will kill them or force a flash.

Now it does not work against everyone, a clear example is Teemo with PTA Ignite. The only reason this is strong is because it's an auto attack steroid with range. If the enemy top is also a strong level 1 champion but has ways to stop you from kiting them or just outrange you, this will be a lot more coinflippy on who wins.

If you would like to try it:

Lethal Tempo, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Last Stand, Bone Plating, Unflinching, Attack Speed, Adaptative Force, Flat +65 HP, Barrier-Flash, Doran's Bow start, level up E. Go to the bushes hunting for them as soon as possible, bounce on their head, ward the bush if necessary and start kiting. If they are known for bush-cheesing like Darius, pretend you are clueless and falling into their trap.

SELF-MADE CONTENT Introducing the Gnar statik build

Post image
25 Upvotes

I tried engineering a gnar statik build recently and using it in master elo (for like 40+ games). It kinda works, so I wanted to share it with you!

Pros: You can cheese a lot of matchups (especially squishy ones like Teemo, Yasuo, Vayne, Varus), you have high sustain, movespeed, splitpush pressure on the map, really good for snowball

Cons: You are half as useful in fights, your allies will flame you, not too good if you are already losing

----------------------------------------

The trick with this build is to take advantage of some synergies:

- Jack'of'all'trades and Doran Helmet/Statik Shiv + Lifesteal boots + health regen or CDR item : you can reach 10 stats with these (easy +25 damage)

- Statik shiv x Hullbreaker procs together (hullbreaker's 5th attack deals extra damage, each statik thunder add a stack)

- Statik shiv x Titanic, Terminus, Wit's end, BOTRK all proc on-hit too (Terminus even add extra stacks), though I mostly recommend Titanic because you might need some HP

- Omnivamp lifesteal with Statik is great

Once you complete statik shiv, your waveclear and structure damage become ridiculous, you get lane prio against most enemies which allows you to roam or defend turrets more easily. With hullbreaker + statik alone you have 410 MS so enemies have a really hard time catching you too! To carry, you just splitpush 90% of the time

I'd say it's less strong than the standard Trinity build, but pretty nice for cheesing tough matchups and snowballing.

----------------------------------------

Here's a clip of a streamer reacting positively to my build https://www.twitch.tv/bang2/clip/NastyJoyousBaconRickroll-tEE6XzUWSpLXW_Dp

Please give it a try! (use at your own risk)

QUESTION Blind pick

lowkey want to main gnar top as a blind. I have 2 questions:

is gnar a extremely great blind pick or just a great blind pick and
how does gnar scale into late game ? I am kayle main so I want a champ that even if I go even lane its worth it (I DON'T WANT A SNOWBALLISH CHAMP )
