Im a huge fan of modern family. I remember it being advertised on TV before ever airing on Sky TV (uk) and thinking that looks fun! I watched it from day 1, bought the dvds, and as it moved to streaming I waited to watch every episode towards the finale

I seriously loved every character, cos of how different they all are. And I joined this sub for positive reasons, to hear others opinions and what they love about the show, spot easter eggs i never noticed etc.

But I cant lie, I understand people's opinions, but ive found this sub to be the most toxic and critical place of this extraordinary TV show. Particularly to 'Cam' and 'Manny'. It almost seems personal against the actors and not the characters. And to reiterate, the characters are sitcom characters. Their personalities are purposefully characaturised

Like I understand maybe some people dont love or appreciate the 'lack' of character development. But also just wtf? If they make you as mad as some people behave, clearly theyre good actors?

But despite that, I really enjoyed those characters and respected the way they were brought up vs how they were raised and how its shown.

I have only 1 disappointment from the show and its Haley's ending. She should have ended up with Andy or someone who isn't Dylan. But I also see why it happened and why its cute. And thats not a character or acting issue. Its just an actor clash is from what I heard he had other acting commitments.

This TV show is fun in every episode, its a sitcom, its not meant to be realistic like a drama. And the way people talk im this sub is as if they dont enjoy the show?? No one is making you watch it.

I know you will say if I dont like it then leave the sub. And I plan to. Ive never seen so many people be negative to this show. This should be a place of support. But like I said I understand disliking a character, but it doesnt mean diss the actor or the writers arc for them.

I think what im tryna say is that a good chunk of things the 'fans' complaim about, are the things that make the show funny. You all treat them like real people. Its meant to be relatable, yeh, but as I said, their characters arent real. They're characatures.

Sorry i had to vent. Does anyone agree with me? Does anyone else actually enjoy all the characters regardless? I love Cam's flamboyance. I love Manny's melodramatic-ness. They're both good for TV and it works and is funny. Idk. I just wonder if anyone actually enjoys them as it seems theres only hate.

I'm now on S07E01 and the ending of S06E20 tugged at my heart. I really wish Andy and Hailey could have been endgame without the cheating.

I’m watching through for the first time and I noticed that during either season 6 or 7 they stopped doing the voiceovers at the end of the episodes. This was one of my favorite parts as it provided a very nice way of wrapping up the episode and making things feel kind of homey. Anyone no why they stopped doing these?

I love the joke of doctor monty lemon in season 6 episode 5. I like how he actually knew Phil. I imagine the other guy he called sports coat is another acquaintance. I know the car thing seems like a writing mistake but i imagine he drove back to the park to thank Phil or repay him then caught them pouring the garbage in the car.

There seems to be something of a general consensus, that the writers didn't really know what to do with the kids, as they grew up and the seasons progressed.

Whilst I'm not a fan of retconning, there are one or two examples of characters from other movies and TV series, who I feel could have served as a reasonable 'road map' or 'point of reference' for the writers, when developing the kids throughout the series.

For example:

Luke - Jake Peralta, from Brooklyn 99.

Jake is goofy, child-like, full of really dumb "Let's try this!" ideas but also genuinely intelligent, a fun, unorthodox thinker, who really has a lot of potential if he puts his mind to it. He feels like a scaled up 'Baby Luke', rather than the himbo - who I'm not terribly bothered by - that we actually got.

Manny - Ted Mosby, How I Met Your Mother.

Ted can be snobby and pretentious at times, and really overstep the mark when it comes to grand gestures but his heart is in the right place. He's a romantic, sincere, goes all out because he wear's his heart on his sleeve. An artist (an architect), who wants to leave something profound behind. He sees life as story and wants to share it with loved ones and the one he loves. Like Jake to Luke, Ted feels like a scaled up child Manny, as opposed to later creepy - kind of a hack - teenager Manny, who I do have issues with.

Haley - Alexis Rose, Schitt's Creek.

This one I'm less certain on, compared to those above, given the wildly different life experiences of the two characters. Haley is a regular teenager, Alexis is an out of touch socialite. But you get the idea, a pretty girl, stuck up and spoilt, learns to become more grounded, more independent, and overall, nicer to the people around her.

Alex, I don't really know.

Lily was still a teenager when the show ended, Joe still a child and the babies, well, babies. They arcs of these characters weren't finished like the other kids or were yet to get going.

TL; DR Are there any characters from other movies, TV series, novels, video games, etc., that you think the kids should have turned out like?

I'm on my 4th rewatch of the series and I have something to say, in appreciation of this amazing sitcom and the humor in it.

I was just watching the eclipse episode and I literally LOLed when Jay screeched 'No!' as Gloria was asking if he was bothered by all of that stuff with the closet guy dying. Such an amusing moment, with Jay answering so fast, and the spond I've never heard coming from him before - just good acting skills and perfect comedic timing, so well written!

The next episode, with Luke and Haley working at the golf club, and the scene with Luke and Rhonda (this gold digger lady) as Haley's angel and devil - that whole scene was so we'll executedl!!! And when Luke says that line of something goes in her ear one way and leaves the other!

Maybe I'm higher than trees go, but it is just so fun to watch, especially with the great actors that have such chemistry, skills and their own comedy execution... Perfecto. Standing ovation.

I do admit that there's nothing more to notice on the next rewatches (I have also rewatched The Office like 13 times), but I find myself laughing at stuff I've already seen, which means it's still on the top. The show is not perfect, but it redeems itself often!

I know Alex took off a semester in season 8 because of mono, but why wasn't she back in school in the spring? She was at home on Valentine's Day, and that was a Tuesday that year. Shouldn't she have been in class?

Luke calling Haley kitten and calling his dad handsome is so cringe!!!

Honestly it pisses me off because it seems like a one time thing, Phil should’ve admitted it when it happened. Then it’s revealed they’ve done it again. It just feels wrong to make your wife eat crickets for a bet. I just wanted to say this since I haven’t seen a post talking about it
