I can't find a TOS ep I'm trying to share. It's the one where Kirk is arguing with someone, likely Spock, and while angry and pointing at him, he says something like "You! You... ... You're absolutely right." It's a great scene.

Anyone know offhand which episode that is?

I honestly did not expect she'd enjoy it, so we started our Star Trek journey with Star Trek Enterprise instead of TOS. She's not really a fan of Star Trek Discovery, so I'm watching it on my own.

I have been pouring over what to possibly use! My brand is already slightly sci-fi (as much as possible without sacrificing professionalism) .. but I want to use something that fans will instantly recognize but seems normal to everyone else. Currently the name is "AGXX Labs" [its CRO/UX research and strategy development/implementation] The model is uniquely Math based so any Math or fictional tech reference could work (not The Delta though lol) - I have "ad aspera per astra" visibly tattooed on myself so ideally not that either lol

BONUS: If it can be Abbreviated with a consonant first and vowel so people dont try to pronounce it when I put it in front of "UX"... I realize the difficulty of what im asking lol.

I’ve always wondered about this after Star Trek V.
At the end of the film, Kirk returns with first-hand evidence that:
the Great Barrier can actually be crossed,
there’s a habitable planet (Sha Ka Ree) at the galactic centre,
and they encountered an incredibly powerful imprisoned energy being.

Surely after Kirk’s debrief, Starfleet would have sent a dedicated science mission to investigate?
I’d have expected something like an Oberth-class science vessel, retracing Enterprise-A’s route, deploying probes, surveying the Barrier properly and confirming whether the entity was really destroyed or simply dispersed.
As far as I know though, we never hear of any follow-up mission in canon. It seems odd that Starfleet would simply file the report away and never go back.
Have I missed a novel, comic or reference somewhere, or is this one of those loose ends that Star Trek has never revisited (because it was received poorly)?

I am in a rewatch of this episode and I am at the scene where the officers are discussing the moral dilemma of destroying the Borg. I felt as though Picard was right the collective needed to be neutralized, but I also understood Beverly’s point. Any thoughts? Also as a side note Jonathan del Arco did a wonderful job portraying the Borg survivor. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks folks.

Yes, Trek is about the 'what if' humanity abandons selfishness and wants to improve. But we can't ignore that Trek is, first of all, about the crews, and the captains through whose eyes we see this universe.

It's a no-brainer, really: every(?) Trek show follows a particular captain and their actions, but if we look closely, for all their differences, the captains we see across the Trek series are very similar. Kirk (and TOS in general) was very raygun gothic, he was this heroic archetype more so than a proper character: handsome, righteous, smart, responsible. And these traits are found in (almost) every main captain across the series: Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Archer, Pike, etc. Yes, some may be more cunning or unscurulous than others (which is one of the main differences people list between Kirk and Picard), but at their core, the captains embody the base principles of Starfleet/ the Federation. And I think it's brilliant, because while captains might not be diplomats, they are essentially the first face and voice of the Federation that others interact with, they are the utmost Federation authority outside of Federation authority. I love this concept.

How did Miles O'Brien go from Capt. Benjamin Maxwell's tactical officer to standing in a transporter room on the enterprise?

I've been rewatching Strange New Worlds season 3, and Pike and Batel's relationship got me thinking: How common is it in Starfleet for captains of different vessels to date/marry each other? Because two other examples off the top of my head are Mariner's parents from Lower Decks, and Geordi's parents from TNG (I know their dads are both admirals during the events of the respective shows, but it's safe to assume they were both still captains, or at least the same rank as their wives, when they got married). Granted, the only people it would be appropriate for a captain to date within Starfleet would be someone who technically doesn't have a rank (like a doctor) or another captain.

I saw a poster on the subway for SNW S4 proclaiming: "BOLDLY GO ONE STEP CLOSER TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…" and if that doesn't succinctly capture the "prequel problem," I don't know what could.

It's a very passive construction (not in the active v passive voice sense), but you're going "one step closer" to the actual beginning of the story? It makes it sound like there's just not much that's going to happen.

I'm not personally a big star trek fan. I do enjoy sci-fi and personally really enjoy the trilogy. It's fast paced, the CGI still looks excellent, the characters and dialogue are enjoyable and I absolutely love the autistic energy Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto bring to their roles.

I have seen all 13 star trek films at least once, though I haven't seen the original 10 in almost a decade. I honestly kinda wish that they made more of the kelvin films. They're a lot of fun and I'd definitely take them over the Star Wars sequel trilogy, or really anything star wars has come out with since revenge of the sith.

I also haven't seen any of the extra material. None of the shows, none of the books. I watched a ton of videos on the series when I was really young though, but I don't remember a whole lot of the stuff

The Empath has to be one of the most polarized episodes of not just Star Trek TOS, but possibly the whole franchise!

There are people who rank this as high as City on the Edge of Forever, Balance of Terror, and the Doomsday Machine.

And then there are people like me why Star Trek only has 78 episodes because of how horrible this is.

I will explain my reasoning:

I can deal with a minimal background,

I can deal with that it was not an action packed or Enterprise heavy episode (like The Tholian Web),

I totally respect that McCoy sacrificed himself putting him near death to save Kirk and Spock.

What I can not deal with (even after 40 years) is the fact the Vians get away with killing Linke and Ozaba the scientists and very nearly do the same to the landing party after capturing them just to test Gem's healing abilities-and no sort of retribution comes of the Vians except a speech from Kirk on what they are doing is wrong (especially when 2 episodes prior in Plato's Stepchildren, Kirk was able to get revenge on Parmen after just humiliating he and Spock through the whole episode).

If the Vians got trapped in a forcefield forever and Gem was taken back to the Enterprise for treatment at a starbase it would have been one thing, but to not have them face any punishment is just unwatchable.

BTW: I understand this is just my opinion for the ones that do like the Empath, because we all as Trekkies have different tastes.

Thinking about getting my hands on more star trek content while I wait for Doctor Who's "The Collection" to fill out a bit more. I know The Original Series and The Next Generation are the 2 big shows, but are there other shows that I should absolutely watch? The case for Star Trek: Enterprise looks really cool

Guys, we all love TOS. But we have nostalgia and a love for the franchise and it's fun for us to see its roots. There are some gems in TOS but we gotta be real, there are some outright boring episodes too. There are dated episodes. There are badly aged episodes. It's really just not the cream of the crop to get someone to fall in love with the world. And there are a lot of episodes to get through if you are trying to start at the beginning.

How did you guys get into Trek? Because if you weren't born in the 1950s (Edit: or caught reruns in the 70s and 80s) it probably wasn't through TOS. Random reruns of TNG got me into the series enough that I did some complete watch-throughs later. But without that love I wouldn't expect anyone to have the stamina for the compelte watch throughs.

I would encourage anyone to start with the good bits. TNG season 3-6 is widely considered some of the best in the franchise. There's no reason for someone to trudge through 5 previous seasons even if there are really good episodes mixed in there before they get to start really enjoying it. That's an enormous amount of committment to ask of anyone who is just sort of curious about checking out Star Trek

Okay, so Data kinda answered this for me:

PICARD: He's changing the course of the ribbon. But why would he change it's path? Why doesn't he just fly into it with a ship?

DATA: Our records shows that every ship that has approached the ribbon was either destroyed or damaged.

The problem here is that, Guinan, Soran and the other passengers from the Lakul remembers being in the Nexus before the Enterprise-B beamed them out of it, so the Lakul's passengers did succeed in getting there, so why didn't Soran try to recreate it? Hell, he had access to a Bird of Prey, he could have told the Klingons to get him a space suit and beam him into the energy ribbon.

There was no need to destroy stars and planets to do this.

Archer climbing the mountain in 4.3 - Home and discussing with Hernandez how he sees an unexperienced version of himself in her and to insist on having weapons and a MACO team on board her ship hit hardest on how much the Expanse and the hard calls they had to make had on Archer.
It is interesting to see how the hopefulness of the Federation was close to being smothered out of one of the founding members.
That might have been one of the best episodes to build and show character development. The Xindi plot was always so conflict and situation based. Feels like we had lost focus on the crew itself during S3 in the shadow of the big impending doom of Xindi ball of death.

In Voyager the Omega Particle has the power to disrupt or destroy subspace. That would make warp travel impossible. I think that could have been a much better plot device in Discovery to limit warp travel instead of sad alien. I get that warp travel needs to exist in Star Trek so something else was used.

Edit 1: yes, I know Disco and Academy are not on the list. I don’t think of them as Trek. I’m only happy they had the decency to set them in the far future 😅
