Venting My sister has no friends

Upvotes

This is a really heavy post for me but I feel like I need to just ask for some advice or comfort. My sister (25F) has no friends and I really mean that. And it has gotten to the point where she has stopped trying and has even cried to me about it and it just breaks my heart to see her like that. For context , we both were in the same university but in different majors and during her bachelor's she was not able to connect with anyone. So she would sit alone, spend her break alone. Covid helped , as we moved back home but it's still a super bad experience to go through and that experience really left a mark on her. Then she took a year gap and a job and it was a super new company so there were not many employees. After that she moved abroad for her masters, for the first week or two she tried a lot. She went to hangouts but no success. I do wanna say that she is not super extroverted, she doesn't t really like to include herself or initiate things out of fear of it rejection. But she did try , and ofcourse when you feel a natural connection with someone , it naturally goes somewhere but that didn't happen. So she spent her one alone without any friends and moved back after a year as she could do her thesis remotely. She started a job while doing her thesis and she hasn't been able to make friends either. She cried to me , about how she's lonely and looking at her old pictures wanna make her cry and that she doesn't like herself anymore. She even got feedback from her HR that people on the same floor as her don't know who she is.

I get that there's a pattern here and one could argue , my sister needs to work on her social skills etc. but idk why she hasn't been able to make friends when everyone has friends. Even she wonders why. She even told me that because of this she just ruminates and thinks what kind of a life even is this?

She also told me how on her birthday ,no one in the office knew and on your birthday , you can collect money but she didn't want to do that as it would highlight that it was her birthday that she was spending alone.

She can't do much in office in terms of socializing because there r separate teams an she's not super social , maybe that is something she could work on but it's really a nature thing. There r many introverted people with friends and she's not the type of person who'd just go and sit in a group and start talking.

I feel sad for her because her 20s are essentially going to waste. She just turned 26. At this age you're meeting your friends in cafes , celebrating birthdays , attending friends weddings while she hasn't had such experiences in 6 years. My heart truly breaks for her.

Stuff like this also ends up affecting your self esteem, you feel like you are not interesting one. People don't care enough to approach you etc.

I shouldn't have done this but I was on her laptop and I just looked through her chat gpt. And reading some stuff made me cry , for example she had written that if she prays ( we r Muslims) for friends on her birthday , could it happen. Stuff like should she go to a movie night to her office, even though she literally knows no one and I know she didn't go to any movie night , so thinking about that makes me even more sad. She also wrote " I wish I was good looking" " is it wrong to feel special".

There's so much I wanna say and maybe I can elaborate in the replies because this post is getting long. But what do I do. I want her to have friends , enough to feel somewhat content as I know life is never perfect. I don't want her to look back and feel depressed about her 20s.

im not a good person by any means so im just putting that out there before i start.

everyone is blocking or ignoring me! i dont understand why like i try my best to be what they want me to be. my best friend blocked me and then talked shit about me saying how i was mean and i think the hardest part about it was how they said their “normal” friends are usually 18.. im not 18! i don’t understand what i did wrong and it’s driving me insane i don’t know what i did! my other friend is ignoring me because they have a new friend and this happens every week. i was having a horrible day last night + i was debating on abandoning life or not and i just feel like they didn’t care, i feel like nobody cares. my friends make me feel like i don’t matter and im just a horrible person who isn’t trying to change. i thought they liked me why does nobody ever listen to me

Hi There! Let’s Talk About Whatever!

I'm 42M and looking to chat with a few folks (aren't we all?). I'm pretty much open to everyone and anything -- but for an ice breaker, tell me about a time you cooked something and things got out of hand. Maybe you set fire to something in the kitchen. Maybe you wrecked some cookware. Maybe you made something that was accidentally inedible. We've all been there, at least I think we have.

I turned 43 a couple of days ago. I felt empty.

Upvotes

I turned 43 in July 18th. It supposed to be another day, just like my previous birthdays (I haven't celebrated birthdays since I turned 17). But something felt different... I have received a ton of ads of celebrate my birthday with friends. And it hit me that... I don't have friends... Zero.

Been this old... With no friends to talk to IRL, is more hard that I anticipate it.

I have 0 connection with the people I work with. I have no relation or connection with past friends. I don't know how to relate with people at my same age. The topics they always brings are mortgage, kids, how everything is so expensive, etc. and I felt that is SO BORING. But the topics I bring to the table would look at me like "you are WEIRD AF!", so I keep it to myself. I been Late Diagnosed with ADHD & Asperger's.

I want to connect with someone, it just don't know how at this age, without feeling weird or judged. I really want to feel to be chosen, and not to pay for company.

People never like me and I don't understand why?

For a bit of context, I'm 30 F and my entire life I've always struggled with people just randomly disliking me? Sometimes for no reason as well. When I've asked them, they just say they don't like my vibe. I basically don't have any friends and now I'm in a place where I'm too anxious to meet people because I'm worried they won't like me.

I just don't really understand where I'm going wrong. I'm never horrible, I don't say anything mean to people. I try and show interest and ask them questions. Could it be due to me being a shy introverted person? Or perhaps my physical appearance just instantly makes people not like me?

I feel so lonely and get really upset because I so desperately want connections and friends.

I wish I had real friends

In recent years my friends that I have known for ages have stopped inviting me to things and when we hang out it's always just me inviting them. And even then they don't always respond.

It just feels like I'm just there because I can be in the friend group and not an essential group member. It leads to long periods of time where I don't see them yet I see that there hanging out with this person or this person yet they never land on me. I just wish I had a friend that would choose me to hang out with in there free time and just overall be there for me. It just hurt because I used to be included and I just get to watch it all slip away

Why is it the people who are in my life just don't care. If it's not about them it's nothing. I'm nothing. I'm worthless. It hurts so much and it's never going to be better.

I feel like I'm invisible to the world

It doesn't matter how I feel, what I say or do. No one seems to give a shit.

Can someone reaffirm my existence, lol? This feels unreal to a point, but it's all I've ever known. What'd feel even weirder is some actual affection. And that's just sad... But it is what it is.

Venting 33 and lost my friend group

I’m 33 f and I just recently lost my friend group. I was starting to feel incredibly lonely and not included in a lot of the groups activities, which turned out to be true they were inviting newer friends to do crafts and hangout and was told not to tell me. I didn’t understand why and vented my frustrations to two people that went and told them and then they actually officially kicked me out of the group. I feel sad and lost. They’ve been my friends for 3 years, I met them shortly after getting out of a severely isolating and abusive relationship where I moved to another state with this man before things ended and I settled here because I didn’t have an option or finances to head back to my home state. I’m not close with my family. With this I got off of instagram and Snapchat as well because my heart hurt seeing their updates. I don’t know what to do and feel so incredibly alone and I am not sure where I went wrong in the friendships. One of the girls said she thought everything was fine but I don’t understand that when they were actively not including me in group activities. I just feel lost and like I’m starting completely over and not having social media almost feels even more isolating now. Any advice would be helpful… to be fair I have felt a falling out with them or a shift in how I was being treated and included starting in February. Maybe I manifested this by feeling hurt but there was a shift.

My friends all left one by one

It’s my third year in nyc and I found my friend all left one by one.
One of my closest friends A, who treat me like a big sister, left in April. She’s my first close friend I met after I came to the city. She’s chose a new path of her career in her home country.

Another friend is gonna leave this month. She got laid off and would like to go back home and take a break. She’s my work out buddy and we like to hang out often.

Another friend, C, who used to be my closest classmate, went to Chicago-Kansas-California for work. And then we lost connection.

The city is so lonely. It hurts me even when I see others walking together on the street.

Venting Her existence has become my biggest pain.

I don't know if anyone has been in this situation.

I'm deeply in love with my girlfriend. I would do anything for her. I used to travel 7 hours just to see her and then another 7 hours back home, and I never felt it was a burden because seeing her made me happy.

I always try my best to make her feel loved and cared for. I put in a lot of effort because I truly want her to be happy.

The problem is that I don't feel the same from her. Even though we are in a relationship, she often treats me like I'm just a normal person. She doesn't show love or excitement the way I do. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one who is emotionally invested.

Because of this, my feelings keep growing, but so does the pain. I think about her all the time, and now it's affecting me mentally. It has reached a point where her existence itself has become painful for me because I love her so much but don't feel that love back in the same way.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I expecting too much, or is this relationship becoming unhealthy for me?

I would really appreciate some honest advice.

Want to feel understood - esp as a mom

I feel like as I get older, I no longer have anyone who really understands me.

While in school, there are so many opportunities to find like-minded people.

At work, it's harder because there's not as many people to start with. And the age differences and life experiences are so vast, it's truly hard to have a real friend and conversations are just polite.

I've tried church, and it seems people already have cliques and there's too many hoops to jump through and requirements to go to all the outings.

Even my old friends, we all ended up moving away for jobs and life stages are different.

Then parenthood during the pandemic really put an end to any socializing that I had left.

It's fine to make small talks with strangers or have those once every 6 month friend meetups (since we don't live nearby to each other anymore). But it just feels really lonely. Everyone is busy. Everyone is dealing with their own problems and demanding jobs/life.

Idk what I'm trying to say, other than, it feels really lonely. So maybe it's a me problem. I just feel so disconnected. And it makes me sad.

I know this isn't forever, and maybe I'll have time to volunteer or join something when the kids are older. But the last few years have been really lonely. Very lonely. I guess I'm writing here to just say it to the universe. And maybe it'll help just to let it out.

If anyone else feels like this. I guess this is where we echo each other and somehow it feels less lonely. Sending positive energy out there. Anyone. Everyone.

Venting This level of loneliness is both crappy and a comfort

Despite wanting to, it's hard to connect to others when I'm going through an unfair and hurtful time in life. I've been lonely for awhile now, and people hardly try talking to me unless I'm at a social gathering, so when friendly strangers talk to me - a compliment, saying hello, introducing themselves and asking about me out of curiosity - I always think something like "Are they really talking to me? Odd. I'll just ignore it" or something. Then I figure they really were talking to me, not someone else, and feel bad about it.

This happened the other day. I was walking home and a man sitting out on his porch greeted me. I ignored it, part thinking he couldn't be talking to me because people mostly don't, part feeling if he really was talking to me, it would be too late to greet him back because I had spent too much time wondering if he was talking to me or not. He ended up saying hello again, and I said hey.

There's another strange thing. How removed from the world and pulled into my head I am despite how the outer world interacts with me. I guess I'm going through a lot more than I think. It just feels like the outside world doesn't matter as much, and if it does, it's only because it's somehow an inner problem. Because that's what happens when I want to help bring about a change to my external environment but don't know what to do. It just becomes stress that has nowhere to go: an inner problem.

I don't like how increasingly removed from the world I've been becoming, and yet I also like it. A bus splashed me the other day. I know had my situation been different, I would've cared a little more and had more shock. But it's good I didn't, it really was a small thing and things like that are part of life, but I can tell my reason why isn't great. I can feel it throughout my day, more notably when I'm outside, most obviously when interacting with people. I just don't care as much for what goes on around me. I just want what I'm trying to get. What I need.

When I look at people, I hardly see a human being. I know they're all strangers but something is new about them. Part human, part "new". And I lack manners, they're almost an afterthought now. More like an after care. The other day I was at the store and I kept getting in one of the workers' way. I felt bad and putting others first is slow to come to mind these days, and when it does, I usually feel uncomfortable with showing that I care for them at all. She ended up apologizing and moving out of my way as if she were at fault somehow.

Basically, with my stress, it's hard to relate and it's hard to care, and the more I don't push myself to feel at least a little something for someone else, the more removed from this world I get. But like I mentioned earlier, I also like it. I like being away from this world. I like being in my own, even though it's just the outer world with less beauty and kindness. It's just easier on me I guess. I don't have to process anything new. But at the same time I want connection. It's all so annoying. The lack of justice, the mistreatment, feeling alone and then also finding comfort in being wrapped up in my crap world to face on my own - and I mean that in the least empowering way.

I probably sound confused to you all. My thoughts are so jumbled up - there's so many of them. I wanted to get this out though.

Making new friends as an adult

I’m 23 now and the biggest difference in life since growing up is having friends. When I was younger I had loads of friends and the only thing that seemed to matter was whether you got along. As time passed I outgrew a lot of those people by taking better care of myself and working towards things I truly care about.

How can you go about making new friends as an adult? I get the idea of familiarity, being where people are, slowly warming up to people, but that never seems to work.

Any advice is welcome because honestly I never learnt to make friends, they always appeared randomly and it’s hard to say how it ever happened. I kind of wish things still worked like that but everyone has their group and if you’re beyond that you stay a stranger
