Which is our money anyway lol

u/FlirtyFluffyFox 17h ago

We might as well make a public fund for elections. Cap election spending in the fund and treason charges if your caught bypassing it with foreign aid. There's need to be a lot more changes for this to take effect and it'd never pass but...

u/Velico85 16h ago

Never say never. Keep talking about these ideas, write members of congress, protest with signage about it, engage with others on why it is necessary. Social change seems impossible to a lot of people until it isn't. Berlin wall, prosecuting Milosevic and Rwandan leadership, revolutions of 1989, etc. As Nelson Mandela said, "it always seems impossible until it's done."

41

u/CILISI_SMITH 11h ago

Keep talking about these ideas, write members of congress, protest with signage about it, engage with others on why it is necessary

...point out that other developed nations do it.

A candidate in the UK has a spending limit of £54,010 ($72,249).

The max a party can spend in the UK is less than £30M. John Oliver joked that in the US thirty million dollars is the budget for a candidates balloons.

Well said the fathers were just regular people like us at the end of the day

33

u/TheSonOfDisaster 15h ago edited 12h ago

The founding fathers were human beings, absolutely. I think that they get made to be almost larger than life sometimes, But we should never forget their human nature. That said, they were also the elite of their society. Most of them were career politicians, land owners with thousands of acres in their possession, Transcontinental business owners, Or were just generally wealthy as hell.

The last time I went to Mount Vernon they were talking about the wallpapers in Washington's house, and they made special mention that most of them were imported from London on custom order. I think that kind of gives you an idea of the quality of life that Washington had, and his position inside of his world.

So I wouldn't say that they were just like us, or at least the vast majority of us.

25

u/giant_traveler 14h ago

Speak for yourself. I too suffer from gout, am riddled with syphilis, and have wooden teeth. I'm practically just like our forebearers.

Half condemn would be a massive step

24

Totally. It was only a year ago in the mayoral debate that Mamdani said he wouldn't visit Israel as his first foreign visit as mayor, and even that was extremely controversial.

Trump should have been too after J6, but if we can break the rules for him I'm willing to change the rules for someone like Mamdani.

165

u/Ted_E_Bear 16h ago

Or instead of breaking them, we can change the old ones and just make new ones that make more sense!

I think we have a term for that or something. "Amendment" I think?

The Democrats really need to put joining the ICC on their 2026 and 2028 platforms.

364

u/jasoncross00 17h ago

The Democrat campaign should be: Orange jumpsuits for all criminals.

Just start listing all the criminals in the Trump admin, including Trump, and promise to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. And that includes international criminals.

Stop caring so much that people will accuse you of politicizing the justice department. They already do, and they're going to anyway. Don't let it stop you from actually holding criminals in government accountable, FULLY and PUBLICLY accountable.

92

u/Brochoa 14h ago

It’s amazing literally nobody in the Democratic Party has done this since Trump has been in office. The dems are fucked if they can’t rally around the simplest agenda such as “lock up the criminals in our government”. They’re all pussies and going to lose another election in two years because of it. There is no front runner right now and I fear there won’t be for a long while. They won’t have anyone to blame but themselves for another election

25

u/OppositeSecretary862 12h ago

Theres rumour AOC is gonna make a bid, but the Democrats love shooting themselves in the foot. They had Bernie, and fucked him over.

9

u/PM_YOUR_BOOBS_PLS_ 6h ago

AOC isn't that popular. She'd be less successful than Kamala. Fact of the matter is, we are still a long way away from a woman ever being president.

The establishment Democrats are neo-liberals just like the GOP. They only care about the economy doing better and protecting corporate interests with a MINOR interest in doing something for the people that the GOP doesn't share. But they will bail on that minor interest if the economy is better served that way.

Neo-liberals will like a fascists boot if it means the economy will do better. Always been the way.

Are they trying to win a federal election in the US or show off how moral they are?

It's great to see but this guy is mayor of New York and what works there might not work as a federal strategy. Even with anti-Israel (not pro Palestinian unfortunately) sentiment at an alltime high, international beurocratic orgs are not exactly super popular with the voter base.

26

u/BigTomBombadil 14h ago

You’re getting downvoted but you’re not wrong. It's part of a treaty, which has to be ratified by 2/3 of the Senate. Plus they'd need to undo the Hague Invasion Act. I knew of the latter, didn't realize ICC was a treaty. That shit is never getting passed in our lifetimes.

I'm sure some lawyer could find a loophole. I'd send them Clinton, Bush and Obama if the ICC wanted to run trials on them too,

2

u/Stubbs94 9h ago

Why would they? The leaders of your centre right party openly supports the actions of the state of Israel.

2

u/Thejollyfrenchman 7h ago

The idea of giving a foreign body oversight over Americans is anathema to most Americans. Giving that body the power to prosecute Americans would be electoral suicide. There's a reason why the Hague Invasion Act passed with bipartisan support.

2

u/Ass4ssinX 6h ago

It didn't pass because of regular people's concerns. It passed because the ruling class don't want to actually be held accountable.

Good for him. fyi, alot of normal people do not know Bibi has a warrant from the ICC for warcrimes.

Edit: just for context, I would say this is a way to expand the permission structure since he doesn't have the power, but he does have the bully pulpit.

Social and Behavioral Expansion involves shifting collective norms to make previously uncommon actions feel acceptable or default

This moves the bar and normalize the thought that BiBi is a criminal/should be arrested. Now this puts pressure on BiBi (also why Israel spends 700+mil this year for PR).

207

u/Lekstil 12h ago

One of the craziest things to me about the ICC verdict is what happened afterwards. The Trump administration sanctioned all the ICC judges. Which means they can’t enter the US anymore, and importantly they can’t do business with any US individual or company. That also means they can’t use like 90% of online services, can’t have credit cards, etc etc. The judges say they feel like they’re living in the 80s again. The level of corruption is mind boggling.

100

u/capri_stylee 11h ago

Let's not forget that the Bidens administration went apeshit over the ICC verdict as well, paving the way for trump's sanctions.

35

u/Realistic_Swan_6801 6h ago

From the last few threads about this, the average Redditor doesn't seem to understand that the mayor of NYC is still "just" a mayor. I grew up in a small town, none of the men and women who have been mayors should be arresting persons The International Criminal Court have declared a war criminals either. I'm concerned that American Redditors don't seem to understand what different elected politicians can and can't do.

I'm sure I'm triggering some down vote fingers. I love Mamdani and I hope Bibi faces justice, Rumsfeld and Cheney were to escaping it have led me to keep my expectations measured.

66

u/leftrightside54 15h ago

I know he doesn't have the power but because of his position, just mentioning it brought up so much publicity that I think it is a good strategy in terms of awareness. It is something to move the needle forward and a new permission structure of what is to come.

6

u/ehalright 9h ago

It's a side effect of the "(not so) new (anymore) reddit" interface.

For some reason when you post in URLs, it escapes certain characters with backslashes. Then, the app/website hide those backslashes from you.

The URI you actually posted was RY_2gElt3SA (because of new reddit inserting \ in a way completely hidden from you), which is a broken stub. The correct URI someone else posted is RY_2gElt3SA, which actually produces a valid link.

In this way the new experience both creates the problem and then protects you from it. It seems to be one of the negative patterns designed to create friction for users who don't want to use the new (ad-ridden/algorithmic/enshittified) app or prefer old reddit.

Or try to edit one and the app crashes.

It’s shocking bad.

I’m still old school and would usually try to end the old markup [text](url) - but that fails in the app now.

Idk I’ll leave it up, it looks like someone dropped a cleaned up link - but thanks for clearing it up.

The view counter is less responsive to each view in real time vs each like. Check back in a while and the views will have caught up.

u/make_thick_in_warm 17h ago

Views and likes go through completely different processing pipelines. A like is a logged in account sending an indexed event. A view is much more ambiguous and goes through steps to determine if a video was viewed as well as verification steps to filter out bots, etc. You see it happen a lot during spikes in a videos popularity, and it’s especially noticeable when it’s a new upload.

Youtube videos don't show accurate view counts for the first few hours, it's a known issue

Don’t forget that congress is voting on whether to intertwine our military with a certain country. Making it almost nearly impossible for any future President or body of congress to undo

I moved out of New York a very long time ago and relocated into a red state for college and wound up staying. It’s about once a week I see Mamdani content and get sad that I’m not represented by him and that he can’t one day run for President. He is what a politician should be through and through.

21

u/Raptorpicklezz 14h ago

He can absolutely run for Governor or Senator though

3

u/RDAwesome 9h ago

But as Mayor of NYC, he represents about as many people as Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island combined, and he's able to super effectively serve them while also using his endorsements to provide a springboard for other people to get into positions to help people. If he does go for governor or senate, that could be great but he's already in a great position now to influence change

3

u/Zealousideal_Desk_19 7h ago

He is setting a great example other politicians will hopefully follow to bring us back to be a better more decent society

2

u/ZestycloseDot5022 2h ago

I think he should run for president anway. If the law doesn't apply to MAGA, I don't know why the left should follow it either.

For me, advocating for the working population and for social justice worldwide is the priority. That is why—much like left-wing politicians internationally—I criticize the actions of the Israeli leadership from a humanitarian perspective and one based on international law.

My concern is purely the political responsibility of those in power toward the people, not the rejection of a people or a religion. My criticism is directed at state power structures and is firmly grounded in human rights; I therefore unequivocally distance myself from any form of antisemitism and hatred.

Our greatest pastime is getting our hopes and dreams up just to drop a few pedophiles and rapists into the picture to grind those dreams into a fine powder that we can sell to inner city youths.

This man is SANE. In a country run by fools we need his voice and actions. I support this American.

31

u/mister_nixon 17h ago

He didn’t say he can’t do anything. He said he can’t independently execute the warrant. He also said that “we can examine every tool we have to defend the humanity and dignity of all people”. That leaves a lot of something.

8

u/charlton11 13h ago

One thing I'm thinking he could do is to not provide city resources for the war criminal when he visits NYC.

International extraditions are defacto foreign policy. That's federal, no matter how bad Bibi is. Diplomats are guaranteed by a treaty* unencumbered access to and from the UN. And number of other solemn obligations that the US is committed to grants diplomatic immunity to diplomats coming from the United Nations. It's actually so ironclad that diplomats coming to the United Nations can rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars of parking tickets and nothing can happen. Anyone who actually tried to take Bibi and ship them off to Canada or the ICC would be looking at a felony conviction for kidnapping of an internationally protected person. Mamdani conspiracy charges and deprivation of rights under color of law.

None of this is to say that he shouldn't be sent to the ICC. He should. He's a fucking monster. But between all the different kinds of immunity and the fact that it's foreign policy and foreign policy is the sole purview of the federal government, there is no legal path for the mayor of New York City to extradite someone to The Hague.

  • So it's not really a treaty because the United Nations isn't an actual nation. Treaties have to be between two nation states. But it was an agreement between the United Nations being the United States which was then passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by the president. It's called the United Nations headquarters agreement. And it actually establishes the United Nations as an extra-territorial enclave. It's also why the United Nations can use the East River, I think it's the East River, for cooling even though that's super illegal in NYC.

As a more moderate (read left of establishment (Medicare for all and so on), but right of tankie types) progressive Dem, fuck Netanyahu. He should be tried in the ICC if countries would stop being so cowardly on the arrest warrant. Also, fuck DJT and the protection of the crooks at the top of Israel. Birds of a feather.

That said, not inherently anti-israel, just anti-Likud and anti-IDF as it stands.

Hope this 3rd party stuff leads to Palestine forming a state so I can support them strong. No more terrorist regimes. No Hamas. No PLO. And the same goes to Israel. No. More. Likud. Pull. Back. Settlements.

2

u/omw2asmile 1h ago

Fuck Netanyahu but also I'm sick and fucking tired of the Israel/Palestine conflict being the locus of all political discourse when the war between Ukraine and Russia is infinitely more important for what security in the modern world means and yet it gets crickets. And at least for those of us in the US there are far more important domestic issues to be focusing on before I/P

u/dixienormus9817 16h ago
