Establishment Democrats: "Can't we kinda half-condemn Netanyahu? Send him a letter or slap him on the wrist? We still need his checks for re-election."

We might as well make a public fund for elections. Cap election spending in the fund and treason charges if your caught bypassing it with foreign aid. There's need to be a lot more changes for this to take effect and it'd never pass but...

u/Velico85 17h ago

Never say never. Keep talking about these ideas, write members of congress, protest with signage about it, engage with others on why it is necessary. Social change seems impossible to a lot of people until it isn't. Berlin wall, prosecuting Milosevic and Rwandan leadership, revolutions of 1989, etc. As Nelson Mandela said, "it always seems impossible until it's done."

39

u/CILISI_SMITH 11h ago

Keep talking about these ideas, write members of congress, protest with signage about it, engage with others on why it is necessary

...point out that other developed nations do it.

A candidate in the UK has a spending limit of £54,010 ($72,249).

The max a party can spend in the UK is less than £30M. John Oliver joked that in the US thirty million dollars is the budget for a candidates balloons.

u/PierreTheTRex 54m ago

In 2024, Democrats spent about $6.7 billion, Republicans spent about $7.6 billion, and third-party candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., spent a little more than $500 million

Yeah it's fucked

Well said the fathers were just regular people like us at the end of the day

36

u/TheSonOfDisaster 15h ago edited 12h ago

The founding fathers were human beings, absolutely. I think that they get made to be almost larger than life sometimes, But we should never forget their human nature. That said, they were also the elite of their society. Most of them were career politicians, land owners with thousands of acres in their possession, Transcontinental business owners, Or were just generally wealthy as hell.

The last time I went to Mount Vernon they were talking about the wallpapers in Washington's house, and they made special mention that most of them were imported from London on custom order. I think that kind of gives you an idea of the quality of life that Washington had, and his position inside of his world.

So I wouldn't say that they were just like us, or at least the vast majority of us.

24

u/giant_traveler 14h ago

Speak for yourself. I too suffer from gout, am riddled with syphilis, and have wooden teeth. I'm practically just like our forebearers.

8

u/blackjebus100 13h ago

Spoiler alert: His teeth weren’t actually wooden…

1

u/giant_traveler 7h ago

I know, but I'm not made of money. I can't afford the ivory stuff.

2

u/pledgerafiki 6h ago

Ivory? Try again bud...

2

u/jeremyaboyd 3h ago

Yeah… they were human ivory aka slaves’ teeth…

1

u/waiver 2h ago

As long as you don't say "I too bang my teenage slave"

6

u/Kizik 13h ago

I think that they get made to be almost larger than life sometimes

For the rest of them, sure. Washington, however...

1

u/TheSonOfDisaster 13h ago

Lol An internet classic for sure. That and ze end of ze world were definitely a huge part of my childhood

1

u/BrewersEnigma 12h ago

I think you might be forgetting what most of them had in their possession as well

1

u/TheSonOfDisaster 12h ago

Well yes, I didn't think to mention that as it was pretty common amongst the entire upper and most of the middle class of America at the time to own slaves.

So that wasn't as unique/distinguishing as the other points I mentioned. Supposedly over half of slave owners around the time of the civil War owned only one slave. So it was a pretty common " asset" if I may speak so plainly.

Owning thousand of acres of land, being part of political Dynasty, owning entire ships and shipping companies, owning entire newspaper and print shops that printed an entire colony's worth of paper materials, these were all the enterprises of the founding fathers. Sadly, owning slaves were one thing that that elite class actually had in common with the middle class.

1

u/BrewersEnigma 11h ago

Just saying, and I'm not doing this a a gotcha, youve been to Mount Vernon, as have I... It wasn't one.

u/acemedic 16h ago

I always love the little footnotes of history where there’s some specific date and the rationale for why that date was picked is “everyone had to go home for the harvest.”

1

u/Agreeable-Pea4327 10h ago edited 10h ago

I feel like the founders didn't realize how big america would get

a single nation state empire is basically impossible to run democratically due to perverse incentives

EU seems to have the best model where federal budgets are primarily designed to go to the state that generated that budget and not as a handout to laggards whose only contribution is shitty politicians. Albeit, greece really stress tested and somewhat broke it, so maybe there's just no model that actually works

the year of californistan is fast approaching, or potentially, might be crazy, but maybe mathematicians cook up some mathematically sound form of an incorruptible governance structure

1

u/Speaker4theDead8 15h ago

Since I began paying taxes, I have said they need to remove the "Do yiu want to donate $3 to the general election fund?" option, and just make it mandatory. Everybody pays their $3, and that is split evenly amoung candidates. Thats all the funding you get, use it wisely.

1

u/farfrom_home 12h ago

How about capping election funding at the same as minimum wage, see how fast minimum wage rises then.

1

u/Colossus-of-Roads 11h ago

Hey, that's what we do in Australia. Also federal election campaigns last 6 weeks and even that's too long for us.

1

u/movezig123 10h ago

just like how drug laws stip drug dealers right

1

u/2hullz 10h ago

I mean, that's pretty much what we do in Australia. It's possible

1

u/Thegrandbuddha 9h ago

So the crazy part is...

When you're filling your taxes there IS a question of you want to donate 3 dollars to the presidential election fund. It only applies to the president currently seated, i believe.

I've never checked it so i never did a deep dive into it.

1

u/desperateorphan 7h ago

>treason charges

With most things I’ve learned from the Trump administration, it’s not whether something is legal or not. It’s “who is going to enforce it?”.

Trump has proven that judges refuse to do their jobs as they would to any one of us for the same crimes. Trump has proven the police, FBI, CIA, etc refuse to do their jobs as they would any of us for the same crimes. Trump has proven that Congress will not do their jobs…. Etc.

Dems are better than republicans but it’s not by much. Hopefully this move towards DSA scares some of the establishment into change rather than panic.

1

u/Noble_Ox 6h ago

There are countries that have a cap on election spending so underdogs have a better chance.

1

u/tawzerozero 6h ago

Foreign aid in elections is already illegal. And yet its only been used to go after Democrats. The summer of 2000, Al Gore dealt with months of news coverage over foreign donations, worth like half a million dollars, while Trumps in kind aid from Russia is valued in the billions, and not a word. We tried capping election spending amd the SCOTUS struck it down. Multiple times.

1

u/someanimechoob 5h ago

We might as well make a public fund for elections.

Been suggesting this since 2010.

1

u/XxFezzgigxX 5h ago

People: “Should we close glaring loopholes that allow foreign election donations?”

Politician: “No. It’s not in my our best interest because I like money.”

1

u/Crozax 5h ago

There's a deeper issue. Trump was charged and convicted of several felonies. When the largest news network in the country is allowed to keep its broadcasting license after settling for a BILLION dollars over a misinformation campaign, then something is deeply wrong. Half the country is allowed to live in an alternate reality. They're sold culture war nonsense to keep them so angry and fearful of the other that they cant see the gridt right in front of their eyes.

1

u/ewokninja123 5h ago

What does treason even mean in this context?

1

u/square-enix-geno 4h ago

And a portion of the fund goes into a lottery pool where voters who vote get entered to win.

u/thecrimsonfucker12 1h ago

A somewhat functioning democracy in my America? That's straight up Communism!

1

u/popular_in_populace 16h ago

There is the option to donate some of your end of year tax dollars to a presidential campaign fund

3

u/blacksun_redux 15h ago

I got curious how that actually works so I looked it up.

First, you must be a major party candidate to receive it. So democrats or republicans. (Or have had received at least 25% of the vote in the previous election.). Second, if you elect to receive the campaign fund grant, you cannot receive any private campaign donations, and your spending is capped at the fund amount.

"In 2008, Republican nominee John McCain accepted an $84.1 million public grant. Barack Obama declined public funding and raised approximately $745.7 million over the election cycle. Obama was the first major-party nominee to reject the general-election grant; McCain was the last major-party candidate to accept one. No major-party nominee has accepted it since."

For 2024, the available general-election grant was $123,595,200.

Trump spent 255 million. Biden/Harris spent 1.1 billion.

So, in other words, it seems that today's campaign spending levels, this fund is obsolete and useless.

Which in my opinion just goes to show how broken campaign contribution laws are (Citizens United), as spending is out of control, corporate "voice" leaves less room for democracy and lobbying is far too entrenched.

1

u/popular_in_populace 15h ago

Didn’t mean to imply it was useful or beneficial, just simply that it exists.

u/blacksun_redux 1h ago

I was just sharing information. :)

7 billion a year we hand to Israel. Far more than ANY other country. Its the size of NJ. I get it: politicians need to raise money to stay in power. Israel/AIPAC makes it VERY easy, vs having to be on the phone all day, every day asking for money. In walks AIPAC with a wheelbarrow of cash and tickets to your favorite event. This is why we need, desperately, to overturn Citizens United, and get money out of politics. Our politicans are NOT working for We the People (well, a few are... but the vast majority are in it for the money)

1

u/Canadatron 9h ago

It's so pathetic to see slopulist comments like this getting so much attention. What are you guys even doing, where do your priorities lie? Why the fuck would mayor of New York talk about Netanyahu than Trump? What the fuck is this?

51

u/WelpSigh 18h ago

I mean Mamdani is also, in this very video, announcing he is not doing anything other than criticism. Because he like every other Democrat lacks the power to do anything about it.

865

u/tyranos 17h ago

There is a large difference between a city mayor and a congressman. What are you on about?

36

u/jimselden 16h ago

He is only a Mayor with absolutely no power to arrest any foreign dignitary

17

u/salartarium 13h ago

arrest

Has no power to arrest anyone. Statewide, mayors in New York have little direct control over police operations.

2

u/Deprisonne 10h ago

Strange how that only ever appears to apply to democrats, but once a fascist wants someone roughed up, the police are basically tripping over themselves for the opportunity to play goon squad...

7

u/ArtisanSamosa 7h ago

Are there examples of mayors roughing up foreign dignitaries?

1

u/chinaski73 3h ago

Exactly. Bibi is a piece of shit, but Mamdani needs to do his job which is to manage NYC. Nothing more, not getting involved in international matters. He needs to stay in his lane and do his job. His grandstanding is getting annoying.

22

u/Amongdogs 16h ago

Yeah that guy don't know what he's talking about, a city mayor has very little to do with global politics, but Congress at this very moment could stop sending aid to Israel.

144

u/Bageland2000 17h ago edited 17h ago

I think his point is Democrats don't have the numbers in Congress for meaningful oversight or legislation.

151

u/cuchiplancheo 17h ago

Nope. That's not what he's saying. They're blaming Mandani for something he has no power to enact.

Instead of blaming Dem's, people need to put blame where it belongs.

15

u/Alderan 17h ago

Yep, squarely on the people who don't vote for the Dems because "both sides are the same".

50

u/Thefrayedends 15h ago

Yes, but also no. Dems are fighting tooth and nail to run pro-netanyahu candidates. Those candidates also pretty much always happen to be the types of candidates that take huge money from the lobbies that fight against public healthcare, fight for more military spending, fight for corporations to have unlimited power and immunity, and so on.

Like yea, lesser of two evils, but failing to call out the secondary evil does a major disservice to the situation we are all in.

Hand waving and saying, well dems are better end of story, everyone can go home, see you in four years, is EXACTLY why we are here now.

GET INVOLVED IN PRIMARIES. If there aren't progressives in your area, think about running or nominate someone to run. Candidates that refuse PAC money and demand accountability and equitable taxation are taking over the party, and the wave might just be too much for the corporate dems to resist.

Especially if you get on board with the reality of the situation, that it isn't so simple as vote blue no matter who. You got centrist dems saying 'vote blue no matter who, unless it's a progressive, then I'm going to do everything to fuck them over' those people need to be removed fuckin yesterday.

1

u/AustinYQM 7h ago

Dems are fighting tooth and nail to run people who can beat Republicans. Mamdani seems great but he stands zero chance of winning in a purple district.

Most people do not care about foreign policy at the best of times and that is doubly true when our own country is suffering economic turmoil and fascistic backsliding. This message, no matter its accuracy, isn't gonna help someone like Telarico get into the Senate.

Good thing Genocide Joe stood up to Israel like he did or it would be so much worse.

-2

u/theotherplanet 14h ago

Yup. Gaza completely razed under Biden, continuing to provide Israel with money, weapons and cover during the genocide.

2

u/justforthisjoke 16h ago

It's too late in the game to still think your parties are meaningfully different. Israel has had bipartisan support for decades. How many times will you be tricked?

7

u/Coomb 16h ago edited 16h ago

Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Party and in charge of a city larger in population than quite a few states, and he's clearly calling Netanyahu a war criminal. There is a party with a substantial faction willing to criticize Israel, and it's the Democrats. As a communist, maybe you don't believe in electoral politics under our current system of government, but you should be capable of recognizing the reality that it's a lot easier to persuade people to vote for Democrats than to pick up a gun and do a revolution.

-10

u/justforthisjoke 16h ago edited 16h ago

Calling Netanyahu a war criminal amounts substantially to nothing. At best all it is is reflective of the shifting of the American people's perception of Israel, and at worst it reaffirms the settler-colonial state. He obviously doesn't have the authority to do anything about it, but that's the whole fucking point: you get a friendly face feeding you platitudes and no meaningful change in policy.

Edit: Yes it's easier to vote for the democrats than do anything outside the electoral process, and you can (and maybe should) continue to do so, but at least stop lying to yourself and others by pretending there's a substantive difference between the two parties.

9

u/RaptorJesusDesu 15h ago

Is it substantively different that we’re attacking fucking Iran? Is it substantively different that we have conservative justices getting by stuffed into the Supreme Court and making abortion illegal? There’s plenty of differences but people like you literally only think in terms of Israel-Palestine lol. It’s so myopic and shallow. Please continue voting for Jill Stein or whatever the fuck you need to do to sniff your own farts and feel above it all

Bruh, progressives have 100% been against Israel for years. Some establishment Dems =/ all Democrats. Even the Dems who support Israel do not support them to the extent of Trump and other Republicans who have 0 problem with the genocide.

Besides Israel, our 2 parties are very, very different. Go both sides somewhere fucking else.

3

u/justforthisjoke 16h ago

It should be embarrassing to be lied to over and over and still fall for the same thing. The democratic party is *not* a progressive or left leaning party. Israel isn't an exception to the rule, it's just the most egregious example today. You say "some" as if the party broadly hasn't supported Israel. As if even the posterchild for the progressive wing of the party, Mamdani himself doesn't support its existence, and the last one (Sanders) hasn't come out as a full fledged zionist. There's no difference between the two. One will just tell you nice words and platitudes about how their hands are tied.

4

u/Trumpisanorangebitch 14h ago

https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/homenews/house/5970608-pelosi-clark-massie-israel-amendment/amp/

103 Democrats or half the damn party voted for an amendment to cut off aid to Israel. 1 Republican did. Shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down.

The Dem party is lefter than the Republican party by a mile. Harris would have been much better for Gaza than Trump who is openly racist and Islamophobic and doesnt give half a fuck about the death toll and is in Bibi's pocket.

If your standard for opposing Israel is opposing its existence and opposing the two-state solution, you will find very few people who believe Israel shouldnt exist entirely. Not just in America, but globally.

How many Dems support gay marriage, how many Reps? How many Ds support weed legalization, how many Rs? How many Ds support trans people, how many Rs? How many Ds wanted to bomb Iran, how many Rs? How many Ds tried to overthrow the government when they lost an election, how many Rs? How many Ds asked the state of Georgia to give them fake votes to overturn an election result, how many Rs? How many Ds gerrymander black predominant districts to destroy their vote, how many Rs? How many Ds support universal healthcare, how many Rs?

Shut the fuck up dumbass.

He lied. He is rightfully being called out for doing so, he knew very well he would not be able to arrest him yet he accepted the votes who believed in him to do so.

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford 12h ago

He never had the power to arrest Netanyahu and he knew it so isn't it outrageous he kept making a promise he was fully aware he couldn't keep and had no intention of carrying out?

I'm not blaming Mamdani for being unable to do something, I'm blaming him for making a stupidly unrealistic promise.

If you promised me you can cure cancer even if you're not a scientist, I wouldn't be mad that you couldn't. I'd be mad at you for making a dumb promise.

2

u/mystery_hole 11h ago edited 11h ago

He said he would use every legal avenue New York had to deal with Netanyahu. And that's exactly what's happened. The cops won't support the order to do so if he ordered it, because of the legal issues with following said order. He has multiple times since his campaign started, openly stated that he would discussing options with the NYPD to follow ICC orders, but they would not without federal action to do so. Thus, the point of this video and shifting responsibility to the federal government

By the way, most of our federal Congress members, who have the power to order his arrest, will not even call it a genocide. We should start the discussion there.

No for much longer. The center is moving left. This is the way.

10

u/Wishfer 16h ago

Said the same thing about Obama. Power concedes nothing without a demand. We’ll see.

3

u/joshTheGoods 14h ago

Obama succeeded in shifting the Overton window left. All we had to do was reward him for the ACA, instead we sat on our thumbs and let the seeds of MAGA take power in the House and Senate. Even after our betrayal of our supposed liberal ideals, we still had a chance to secure the leftward swing, but the American voter just doesn't have it in them to vote for a qualified but unlikable woman. So instead of securing universal healthcare and a solid new national liberal coalition, we lost Roe and our dignity and potentially our democracy itself. Yay!

Until we, the left, learn to vote strategically, we will continue to lose to the smaller but more unified right in national elections. Here on Reddit, that means the progressive types in here always trying to pivot to whining about "establishment dems" as if they're the goddamned enemy. Outside of Reddit where you experience the real voter base, it's the center-left to center dems always trying to pivot to whining about the remote possibility of their hypothetical child competing against a giant black trans woman in fucking hapkido or whatever. How about we liberals let other liberals be their own version of liberal as long as we all agree on the basics like human rights and that Bibi is a piece of shit? You don't like Newsom and Pelosi and Schumer and DWS and blahblahblah? Too fucking bad. Liberal voters voted for them, you worry about your goddamned reps.

0

u/Wishfer 13h ago

“ Obama succeeded in shifting the Overton window left.”

Dude.

1

u/joshTheGoods 11h ago

What? What part of the reality of the American voter today and back in 2008 are you not getting looking at this fascist dumpster fire? Open your eyes. Making progress on universal healthcare after decades of liberals fighting for power after the Civil Rights Act + Nixon unified racists and a key portion of the business first types (sound familiar?) was ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY moving the Overton window left. If you want to get to progressive policy with this nation where the majority voted for Trump in '24 after all we knew about him, you have to work your ass off to get incremental gains then work even harder to protect them against the inevitable backlash.

Get fucking real. Please. We all want the same things here, and it's so ridiculous that anyone has to beg you guys to support ALL liberals, not just the ones that pass your personal purity tests (that I would argue are often foisted upon you by people that know how to spot a wedge issue and don't care about you past their ability to talk you into spending energy attacking other liberals ... see: Bibi N).

-2

u/Thefrayedends 15h ago

Yep, they've shown time and again that they will muster the votes to approve a republican agenda.

Case in point, 9 dems voted in favor of ceding the power of the purse to the Executive last spring. They act like they were playing a game of chicken and lost, like they could just get on board to giving executive unlimited power and they wouldn't abuse it, because why would the executive abuse their power???

So either they're politically inept, or politically malicious, which do you think it is?

3

u/the_c_train47 12h ago edited 12h ago

9 democrats approved but 37 democratic senators opposed, to be clear. You’re misrepresenting the party with a small minority. The democrats have a lot of decent people who oppose the fascist republicans, actually. Critiquing the democrats is a good thing, but at least reach for valid critiques - in this example, criticize Schumer and the yes votes, don’t misrepresent the party as a whole.

0

u/Thefrayedends 6h ago

So the party leadership votes for the other party that is clearly on the violent fascist path, the rest of the party does basically nothing to call it out and replace leadership with someone who represent constituents, and we're not supposed to blame the party?

The centrist dems are the problem, if you do nothing, and say nothing, you are part of the problem.

Gotcha. To be fair, actively calling Netanyahu a war criminal and calling their actions a genocide is already way better than most democratic congress members.

2

u/xxAkirhaxx 17h ago

I'm sorry man, but I've lived through this once already, when establishment dems have power they simply do nothing, and whine about things that 'almost passed' or let them get destroyed with meddling. Then when conservatives get in, they go wrecking ball on everything.

I don't want to go back to getting nothing done when my party controls the House, the Senate, and the Presidency, and competitive portion of the Supreme Court. I want representatives that will fucking fight for the things I need, not what Google, or SISCO, or fucking some lettuce distributor I've never heard of that makes billions per year needs.

-1

u/xenthum 17h ago

10

The leader of which party in Congress said this, reusing a quote by famous American segregationist politician George Wallace: "Israel today, Israel tomorrow, israel forever"

The leader of which party in Congress said this, "My job is to keep the left pro-Israel"

Which party does the Governor of California, who said this "I revere Israel," belong to?

The preferred Senate candidate of the aforementioned congressional leaders, who said "Israel comes to me in my dreams, belongs to which party?

This isnt a question of Democrats vs Republicans (who of course also firmly support Israel). Pro-Israel politicians must be actively, affirmatively removed and that requires specifically targeting and criticizing members of the Democratic party.

lol a city mayor arresting the head of state of an allied country?! Not happening and it would be tossed out to court sooo fast.

7

u/adobecredithours 16h ago

Well that's exactly why Mamdani said he'd consult the law and only do what is legal in his position. Unlike some parts of our government, he didn't decide to invent new legislation to just let him do whatever he wants.

0

u/Greyhound_Oisin 15h ago

On what basis would it be tossed out of court? Does being a head of state make you immune from prosecution for your crimes? Shit, someone better tell them they need to release Nicolas Maduro...

10

u/Coomb 16h ago

On what basis would it be tossed out of court? Does being a head of state make you immune from prosecution for your crimes?

It does, actually, and there's a pretty strong argument that our arrest of Maduro is illegal under international law. Indeed, his attorneys are making that argument.

Shit, someone better tell them they need to release Nicolas Maduro...

It turns out that even if you do violate International law, that only matters if somebody else is willing to enforce that law on you. Guess what? The United States isn't willing to enforce international law against Benjamin Netanyahu. Even if Mamdani was able to persuade some New York City police officers to attempt to arrest him, and even if they successfully arrested him against the will of him and his security detail, do you really think the New York City Police Department is going to literally fight the federal government to prevent them from taking custody of Netanyahu and immediately releasing him? Because that's what it would ultimately come down to. Mamdani would only be able to hold on to Netanyahu if he were capable of winning a literal gunfight.

The mayor of nyc is more powerful than a congressman. Is that your point?

0

u/Rusty-Shackleford 12h ago

And it's ridiculous that he made a promise he knew as mayor he couldn't keep. Of course a city mayor can't have a foreign leader arrested for ICC crimes. He knew that was a dumb promise and he made it anyway. Just to get some easy votes from naive voters. It was a slimy thing to do and voters should feel insulted for that.

in the video, he is explaining to the people he governs what is going on with the idea of arresting a war criminal if he comes into the city. he mentioned this during his campaign and consulted with lawyers about doing it. he learned it would not be feasible.

he is telling people this, to be transparent. so that people don’t start saying “HEY WHAT HAPPENED TO ARRESTING NETANYAHU”

it’s called being transparent.

it’s wild the type of shit people are looking for to criticise someone who has done more for his city in 3 months than the last 3 administrations did in their entire terms combined.

-1

u/KorunaCorgi 14h ago

HE'S THE ONE WHO SAID HE'D ARREST HIM TO BEGIN WITH. LMAO

1

u/halcyon8 1h ago

AND HE IS NOW EXPLAINING WHY HE CAN'T BECAUSE IT'S ILLEGAL SO HE'S BEING TRANSPARENT AS TO WHY

u/KorunaCorgi 24m ago

It was obvious to anyone that arresting the leader of a foreign nation was not going to happen legally. He would need at minimum some kind of pardon power for any actor involved in the affair. What's funny is that he criticized Trump for arresting Maduro for similar reasons, specifically calling him the leader of a sovereign foreign nation.

The fact that you are fawning over Mamdani for making the most obvious observation is pretty laughable to me. Maybe he will give a PSA that water is wet and win more points too.

u/Zealousideal_Ear4180 16m ago

The Spider-Man meme of hypocrisy…of course Maduro’s regime remains. America did it to control the oil not for any real justice.

He has done something, though: he went through all the legal research to understand what he could do and upon realizing he couldn't do anything, he explained what they intended to do, described a call to action, and invited responsible parties who could do something to do something (not that they will.) He isn't bowing to Netanyahu like other Dems do, he's not hyperbolizing. If he could do something, he would be doing it.

-1

u/_NickPapagiorgio_ 13h ago

I mean, he could have done all that before making the claim. Seems like a pretty important detail to know.

ya know, unless of course it was all performative in the first place and you're being manipulated.

"he like every other Democrat lacks the power to do anything about it"

Democrats are literally weighing in on legislation being written, they choose not to do anything drastic. Mamdani doesn't have the jurisdiction to.

Huge difference.

0

u/voidox 13h ago

yup, it's telling we are seeing ppl basically going after Mamdani for this video and trying to act like the DNC can't do anything, libs just can't help but defend the DNC no matter what + the usual of ppl being racists/islamophobic against Zohran and "omg socialism is evil!" bs -_-

5

u/fudgemental 16h ago

He lacks power not due to his political affiliation but because arresting an international criminal is outside of his purview as Mayor. He can't just Dog the Bounty Hunter Bibi, even if he was a Republican. Congress, though, can make the arrest on behalf of the US government, and he's calling upon them to do it.

19

u/xxAkirhaxx 17h ago

He did it significantly differently though, he said he can't legally, which is true, and then he threw the Federal Government under the bus, inviting their wraith, and then straight up said, in no uncertain words, that BB isn't welcome in NY.

Sorry, you're not going to get a Mayo who is going outwardly break laws....yet, and hopefully ever, but this still goes way farther than establishment dems.

16

u/Clemsontigger16 17h ago

What exactly do you expect a US city mayor to do?

8

u/WelpSigh 17h ago edited 17h ago

I would expect him to do exactly what he's doing in the video! I'm not criticizing him, I'm just saying it is a little absurd to go after "establishment Democrats" for doing nothing but writing angry letters in response to a video where Mamdani, the not Establishment Democrat, is announcing he has no power but to criticize Netanyahu, which he does in the video.

17

u/IndividualPay7554 17h ago

We can absolutely criticize the fact that on this list the 3 last Democratic Party nominees for president are in the top 4, the two current Democratic Party minority leaders in Congress are in the top 12, and 15 of the top 20 recipients of money from the pro-Israel lobby are Democrats.

We should unequivocally go after these people. They should be booed out of restaurants and harassed (and primaried) at every single opportunity. Mamdani doesn't go after Israel and Netanyahu because he has no federal power to. The establishment Democrats don't because they are paid not to, and the responses to their "inaction" by us should be completely different.

4

u/Clemsontigger16 17h ago

I mean it’s a little naive to believe there isn’t money changing hands from Israel….the ones receiving it who continue to enable or avoid legislation that would oppose Israel…they could definitely do things.

A mayor cannot.

1

u/DogBarf00 9h ago

I would expect him to do exactly what he's doing in the video!

He is doing the same crap Trump does.

0

u/gobbedy 17h ago

but when do you ever see establishment democrats take a strong stance against Israel's genocide? Joe Biden just kept writing Israel a blank check even as he meekly criticized Netanyahu.

People are fawning over Mamdani's strongly worded letter he reads aloud with a frowny face. It's pathetic. Definitely cult of personality vibes over what is definitionally virtue signaling.

1

u/sight_ful 13h ago

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford 12h ago

He made a campaign promise he KNEW he couldn't keep. His vow to arrest Netanyahu was always a joke of a campaign issue and it was just a blatant attempt to get more votes from incredibly naive constituents.

I just think that's something to keep in mind during his reelection bid. Is he going to make more unrealistic promises just to get a few more voters, a few years from now? Just because I like a candidate's opinions doesn't mean they get to lie to me.

1

u/bemo_10 9h ago

1

u/Mathies_ 6h ago

1

u/jab136 6h ago

Biden could have done it

-1

u/ghoti00 17h ago

Democrats do not think Netanyahu is a war criminal. They love him. They will do anything to protect him and Israel.

3

u/DthPlagusthewise 17h ago

Around 100 house Democrats just voted to stop aid to Israel, whereas 4 Republicans voted to stop aid.

There is still a lot of work to be done but the Democrats are headed on the right path.

1

u/ghoti00 17h ago

Yeah the ones who need cover for elections since Israel is so unpopular in their districts. Believe me if it ever came down to a vote that they thought they could win there would be just enough dissenters to make sure it didn't pass. You can take that to the bank.

1

u/DthPlagusthewise 17h ago

"yeah the ones who are representing the views of their constituents"

...yeah? That makes sense right?

It seems that as the American public is turning against Israel Democrat politicians are taking notice and adapting. Keep in mind prior to 10/7 supporting Israel was a popular position.

However Republicans have much more in common with Israel and thus they support it. They love fascism, using ethnic supremacy to justify violence, and corruption. Its President Trump that removed all restrictions on weapons sales to Israel and then bombed Iran for them. Netanyahu says Trump is Israels best friend ever.

Meanwhile Democrats are condemning the war in Iran, blocking multiple defense bills and budgets, as well as being increasingly critical of Israel. Someone like Mamdani could not exist in the Republican party, look at what happened to Massie.

So like I said, there is still a lot of work to be done but the Democrats are headed on the right path, especially compared to the Republicans.

12

u/ManbadFerrara 17h ago

He said he would look into it. IE the same thing anyone with access to Google could do.

The US has rejected membership in the ICC. Period. End of sentence. No matter how he feels about I/P (which I happen to agree with), he can't do shit even if he wanted to.

This is purely a performative thing he's doing here for the DSA. Again, I generally like him, but anyone who thought there was the possibility of NYC actually arresting Bibi has the geopolitical understanding of a high school student.

IMO it's silly that he's even having to entertain this to begin with.

6

u/k-beef 17h ago

It is performative, but I believe it isn't silly. It's putting the issue of Palestine genocide and bibi's war crimes on blast, and signalling to the electorate that this issue should be front of mind to every election going forward. He is one the most, if not the most, popular politician right now, and he is using his platform to push this issue and possibly favourably affect the polls.

1

u/ManbadFerrara 17h ago

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a "silly" issue to have any strong position on. But actually arresting Netanyahu on US soil, let alone getting him extradited to The Hague? I mean, everyone has to know that it ain't happening, even in the most influential city in the Americas.

Like I said, I don't blame him. Like any politician, he has a base to adhere (or at least give lip-service) to. And I'd be able to take the dominant faction of the DSA a lot more seriously if they weren't so ardent on Palestine having a right to exist as opposed to Ukraine, where all of a sudden they go in some really weird directions leading to Russian colonization being perfectly a-ok.

-2

u/Aggravating_Impact97 17h ago

Even doing nothing is performative so what the fuck are you on about?

This why reddit and social media is fucking detestable these days.

You are part of the problem. With our own eyes we see someone at least fucking trying. Hes wells spoken and thoughtful and at the end of they doing what he feels is right. Its not without danger because he knows how much more heat this puts on him and now anything they can fund on him any miss step is going to bebuaed to bury him and people are going to oblige that and will absolutely try to eat him.

People cant wait.

But what is just as toxic is people who dont fuckingndo anything but piss and moan. And take the social media amd call it a day. They let perfect be the enemy's of good. They let the enemy win by default.

2

u/goddamnchooch 17h ago

New York - being the headquarters of the UN had and will have its fair share of controversial world leaders coming in, several of which have been wanted.

The UN diplomatic protocol exists specifically to prevent this.

The job of the NY mayor is to do exactly nothing! This was known all along.

He is just throwing red meat to his base. He is a sharp politician so he is not above performance.

Yes, it's a nice acknowledgement of the bloke being a heinous villain. Yes most Dems haven't even done that. But end of the day this is just a condemnation and that's not a game changer. Mamdani has done other impressive things which is lovely, but just because he has had other genuine wins doesn't make this one too. This is nice, not breathtaking. This is propaganda, not praxis.

First comment black pilling democrats again.

Netanyahu sucks and is Israel's Trump and has to go, has single handedly stopped the two state solution in the 90s riling up people to assasinate Rabin.

However, in no way should we stop supporting the only democracy in the Middle East. Don't give Russia what they want and have wanted since 1953.

Dude below commented, blocked and ran

Reply

You literally have no understanding of history. Russia has backed countries in the Middle East against Israel at the same time it tries to manipulate Israel with hard right divisive people just like everywhere. The goal is balkanization and they need apartheids like East/West Germany, South Africa, Iran Crisis of 1946, the handful of times they split Poland into partitions and on and on.

The end goal though is ending democracy in Israel and pushing out the West.

The current genocide is in Ukraine by neo imperial Russia like always then they try to get other fronts to distract. Russia plays the Israel vs Palestine card all the time. End Russia on that and you end the conflict, never before.

You are so lost in Kremlin propaganda is freaking sad.

3

u/voidox 13h ago edited 13h ago

you keep spouting this "only democracy" line as if it means anything, it's not just Netenyahu who is a genocidal evil person in that country, have you seen what his opposition is saying in terms of how he isn't going as hard as he should and what their plans are? hint: they are just as bad if not worse.

have you seen the polling showing how ~82% of Israeli citizens support the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians? recent polling leading to the upcoming elections in Israel show how most people in Israel basically do support the current government in terms of actions and policies, it's just about replacing Netenyahu due to his corruption and such but nothing against his evil actions abroad.

here more polls: https://en.idi.org.il/tags-en/1465 - tl;dr - saying "oh it's just netenyahu" is pure liberal zionist bs cause it's not just him.

Also no, Israel is not a democracy just cause it has elections, it's an apartheid state and has been one since it's inception, same apartheid laws and policies we saw in South Africa we see in Israel.

However, in no way should we stop supporting the only democracy in the Middle East. Don't give Russia what they want and have wanted since 1953.

wtf does Russia have to do with any of this?

btw Russia supports Israel just like the US, what Russia would want is exactly what you are doing: unconditionally support of Israel hiding behind "duh it's a democracy" hasbara. News flash, Russia supports Israel just like the US, Russian is the 3rd most common language in Israel for a reason, many Russian oligarchs are dual-citizens guess where? Israel.

also no, the US should stop supporting a country doing a genocide and ethnic cleansing while being a decades long apartheid state, we don't live in w.e fantasy land you are.
