I want him to be president pls

337

u/SagittaryX 16h ago

He is ineligible unfortunately, he wasn't born an American.

279

u/Its_Corinne 16h ago

Trump should have been too after J6, but if we can break the rules for him I'm willing to change the rules for someone like Mamdani.

162

u/Ted_E_Bear 16h ago

Or instead of breaking them, we can change the old ones and just make new ones that make more sense!

I think we have a term for that or something. "Amendment" I think?

87

u/pilibitti 14h ago

you want president Musk? That's how you get president Musk.

33

u/anghellous 14h ago

musk v mamdani 2032 would definitely be one for the books lmao

40

u/gw2master 12h ago

Be careful what you wish for: Musk 100% would win and would likely end up being a worse president than Trump (but in different ways).

-3

u/anghellous 12h ago

idk about 100%. people on the "left" and center (i use quotations here only because america doesn't really have a left YET) are SOMEWHAT waking up and realizing that sitting things out over some policy disagreements while death cultists are voted into power may not exactly be the right move going forward.

11

u/Chemical-Agency-3997 10h ago

He’d win because he’d cheat.

5

u/linnyboi 10h ago

Bruh you think votes would be counted in that election?? Elon would just pay for the win like he did with Trump. 😭

1

u/anghellous 3h ago

I mean, cynicism is fine and all but if we let it run wild we may as well bend over and lube up for them.

1

u/pseudo__gamer 7h ago

Or president Schwarzenegger

-1

u/Colayith 12h ago

Who the fuck would vote for Ketamine Boy

5

u/pilibitti 12h ago

people voted for Trump. Twice.

14

u/BigTomBombadil 14h ago

Kinda like “a president only serves a maximum of two terms”?

Just wanna point out that people talking about amendments for Mamdami support need to think about how Trump views amendments for his own purposes. Can’t just change or override them when it’s convenient for your desires.

2

u/Ted_E_Bear 13h ago

Agreed.

1

u/Zeeplankton 11h ago

To me though, that feels like, "They go low, we go high."

it's clear the right has coalesced around far right ideals. They have already decided that the rules don't matter. The left can't just twiddle their thumbs and point to the rules anymore, whining about them being broken.

I feel like the US needs to be frank that they are not in some temporary fugue state as the country is being actively dismantled. It is going to get worse.

This isn't about abortion laws or bathrooms anymore this is about if democracy will literally be upheld.

1

u/SoTiredYouDig 4h ago

The Fugue States of America has a nice ring to it.

1

u/BigTomBombadil 10h ago

Is your recommendation to effectively tear up the constitution? Might as well just hoard all the ammo if that’s what you’re saying.

2

u/Zeeplankton 10h ago

I'm not saying that, I just think general american populace has this idea that everything will turn out fine, because it always has, as long as we return to some baseline. But things are far more fragile than people like to think. Countries do collapse, laws get rewritten and constitutions get trashed.

Congress is basically doing nothing. Our country is incredibly corrupt yet we're intrinsically taught as if it's not. We dragged ourselves into and through a 40 billion dollar war in the past 6 months on the whim of another state lining political pockets.

Trump, tomorrow, could announce he'd run a third term tomorrow, and his entire base would follow. Many right-wing Americans practically scoff at this idea, but it is very possible if not likely, and they will follow like dogs.

The rule of law is exceedingly malleable and is already being altered. If that left is able to take back control in 2028, if they do not pass sweeping changes to the law, and make executive orders to prevent Trump 2.0, they have failed. If there isn't upheaval we are screwed.

Sorry for the wall lol. In summary, I think that the law against a president having to be born a US citizen is against the American ideals and is small rule to break, but it's not the main thing. The main thing is we can "go high" until the people who have systematically worked to destroy it, collapse everything.

9

u/goodguessiswhatihave 15h ago

Yeah it's crazy how many people think that something called an "amendment" should be written in stone

0

u/BigTomBombadil 14h ago

Trump certainly doesn’t. Are we supporting people trying to override them for a specific individual now?

1

u/Colayith 12h ago

That's more or less how history goes. A singular thing becomes popular enough to inspire change, and an amendment is passed. I don't think this will ever be changed, but that's literally how amendments get passed. It's just popular opinion

1

u/Its_Corinne 5h ago

That's why I intentionally used the word 'changed' for Mamdani, I thought the implication of an amendment was obvious when it was juxtaposed against 'break' with Trump, but I guess I need to spell it out.

If Trump can be president despite being a felon, I'm willing to entertain the idea we can make an amendment that allows citizens that weren't born in the US to become president, the specifics of it would be important, but I'm not against the idea.

-6

u/Glonos 16h ago

For any sovereign nation, I like the idea of eligibility through birthright, the top of the executive branch is the face of its citizen. It seems strange if it was different.

Maybe the thing about Mamdani is, throughout his legacy of improving the life’s of millions of Americans, the US in a federal level could grant him a special title based over his entire legacy, to grant him eligibility. Maybe not born, but worked so hard and fought so much to change millions of life.

The foundation of only having natural born citizens possible on becoming leader of the executive is good, but if a citizen demonstrate a huge commitment and legacy over that people, maybe a special grant authorized by the other branches of government could be issue, starting from the legislative, to the judicial and signed off within the executive, granting an honorary title of sorts.

0

u/alex37k 15h ago

wtf are you talking about? This is just your opinion, let’s vote on it. I would love to be able to elect an immigrant as president.

0

u/TooSubtle 15h ago

6.4% of US citizens were born overseas, if you wanted your presidents to 'reflect the face of your citizens' you're currently behind by almost three foreign born presidents.

3

u/monty624 14h ago

No, Mamdani can continue to do excellent work where he legally can within the framework of the constitution. He can serve as an example and an inspiration for people everywhere, of all backgrounds, to get involved and speak out for those in their local communities. We need outstanding people in every part of the government to bring change.

1

u/TheShaydow 13h ago

We don't break the rules just because they break the rules.

We follow the rules and change them with a majority because we understand how rules work.

1

u/Its_Corinne 5h ago

Yes, that's why I intentionally used the word 'changed' instead of break in reference to Mamdani.

0

u/thegooniegodard 7h ago

Schwarzenegger would've 100% been President if this rule didn't exist.

-2

u/BeastPenguin 13h ago

Y'all are so delusional still being on that lol.

Ted Cruz was born a dual-citizen.

0

u/SagittaryX 16h ago

Ted Cruz was born an American, his mom was American, which makes Ted a natural born American.

44

u/JustLeader 16h ago edited 14h ago

Remember that laws no longer matter. The same constitution says insurrectionists and traitors cant be president either yet here we are.

4

u/Tenthul 15h ago

Yeah don't go down that route. We'll have 6 terms of trump k thx

6

u/stirling_s 14h ago

Don't take this as an endorsement of any kind, but I don't think the Trump Admin is waiting for someone to establish precedent.

0

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 4h ago

Yeah I worry about how a lot of people are okay with modifying rules if it works for them

1

u/JustLeader 4h ago

The rules dont exist anymore thanks to republican traitors. The sooner you realize that the better

1

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 4h ago

Yeah nah don't be an acceleration person.

1

u/JustLeader 3h ago

We’re already there unfortunately. Burying your head in the sand isnt an option anymore

0

u/Guy-1nc0gn1t0 3h ago

You realise that having standards isn't burying one's head in sand yeah?

This argument comes up so often here and I've never seen anyone defend it without strange rhetoric.

11

u/WildReaper29 16h ago

If a pedophile/rapist with 34 felonies who ran an insurrection on the U.S. capital can be President, then why not an immigrant? Oh right, racists love one of these and not the other.

2

u/Zeeplankton 11h ago

Honestly, 5 years ago I would've agreed. But at this point, we have intelligence heads refusing to even acknowledge who won an election.

Rules are NOT etched in stone. The bad guys will try to change them. The good guys can too.

I don't want to glorify anyone but Mamdani has done more for the United State's image than anyone else in two decades.

2

u/Gingevere 16h ago

Apparently those rules are 100% fake because there's no mechanism to actually enforce them.

He should run anyway.

1

u/Piggywonkle 15h ago

What if everybody just lied about that? Like how tariffs work, or how the war in Iran is going, or the status of Mitch McConnell's... life?

0

u/MagicDomXL 16h ago

Can he be a vice? Or at least maybe appointed as vice president right after the term begins? (My memory says the VP has the eligibility requirements as the president but being appointed VP is different than being elected VP)

0

u/Jaikarr 1h ago

That's fine actually, we need to stop pinning our hopes on a single person and instead build a group of politicians who raise each other up.

-1

u/Specific_Frame8537 14h ago

It's wild that this is the law that y'all go so hard on, like who gives a shit?

4

u/SagittaryX 13h ago

I mean, it's the constitution, Americans kind of care a lot about it.

-4

u/distorted_kiwi 15h ago

Americans are born everywhere. Some just haven’t come home yet.

-2

u/Olivetax228 13h ago

If the last ten years have taught me anything it's that "fuck it, do it anyway" is a legitimate strategy.

-2

u/Phoxx_3D 13h ago

since when do rules matter when it comes to the presidency

-7

u/FrumpyPhoenix 16h ago

Can he be VP? I’m guessing prob not since they’d be president if the president dies

7

u/SagittaryX 16h ago

VP must be eligible for the Presidency, yes.

2

u/Auslander808 7h ago

I hope that's the dumbest thing I read today.

1

u/StarksPond 2h ago

Extended warranty! How can you lose?

1

u/Whateversbetter 12h ago

I’m glad he won’t be. We’re going to need a lot more people like him if we’re going to dig ourselves out of the wider political climate that allowed trump. He’s the first domino not the last and we’re lucky to have it spelled out so clearly

1

u/SpicyDragoon93 10h ago

Nah, keep him in New York and work towards elevating link minded politicians to similar positions.

-12

u/Mekroval 16h ago

Letting people not born in the US be eligible to run for President is one Constitutional amendment I'd be 100% down for.

65

u/collectablecat 16h ago

ur wish is granted, elon musk is now president

11

u/Mekroval 16h ago

If Americans vote for Musk, we'll 100% get what we deserve. The past ten years already proved that elections have consequences.

15

u/braddeus 16h ago

They will. He outright bought votes in Wisconsin.

2

u/joemoffett12 16h ago

Didn’t he lose that election by a lot

2

u/Mekroval 16h ago

PA too.

1

u/RepulsiveCandy2776 11h ago

The problem is that whoever Americans choose to be president affects the entire world. If an American president chooses to commit war crimes overseas, thousands if not millions of innocent civillians will die in another country.

I know you likely don't mean it this way, but statements like these can be incredibly frustrating for non-Americans to hear. If Americans vote for musk, Americans will 100% get what they deserve... sure. So will innocent people overseas that didn't ask for any of this. Elon Musk was behind race riots in Belfast just last month, he's scary af.

1

u/Mekroval 4h ago

I totally agree with you actually. As an American, I don't mean what I said in a trivial way. I was as distraught as anyone to see great international programs like USAID and PEPFAR pointlessly demolished. Musk shares a great deal of blame for that, and if hell is real, he's more than earned a place there just for that.

I just don't know what the alternative is. The system of checks and balances between the executive and legislative in the US seems deeply broken, and the courts are only barely keeping this administration in check. Musk is a terrifying monster, but I'm not sure what you can do about that.

We have more than enough home-grown terrifying monsters, whom a shocking number of Americans are totally willing to elect. The problem isn't with the leaders, it's fundamentally with us. The innocent people overseas suffering are collateral damage for America's appetite for self-destruction.

If it's any consolation, I don't think this is a sustainable trajectory. Elect enough Trumps or Musks, and the once great power will permanently lose its ability to harm other countries as we permanently weaken our economy, military and cultural power. So things will self-correct, but a lot of people will suffer in the process.

(For the record, I'm very much against that, and hope our next administration restores sanity to our government.)

Obsession 2

4

u/BeautifulTorment 16h ago

You are evil lol

2

u/CountDraculablehbleh 16h ago

That would be a huge mistake

-4

u/Mekroval 16h ago edited 16h ago

Why? Let the American people decide who's fit for office. We can't really fuck things up more than we already have. (ETA: But anything's possible, and I'm sure we'll try.)

Why should the accident of your birth keep you from top office?

5

u/AzDopefish 16h ago

If you can’t connect the dots by yourself as to why that’s in our constitution in the first place, then you really shouldn’t be allowed to vote

0

u/Mekroval 16h ago

Why is the asshole response necessary? There is no justifiable reason why the place where your mom bore you is a reasonable exclusion. The founders were not all-seeing gods.

Make a reasonable argument against it, or stfu.

0

u/AzDopefish 15h ago

I need to explain to you how easy that would make it for a foreign government to bring in an agent, hell, dozens of them, and have them climb our political ladder through populists ideals and then have a foreign actor as leader of another country that is still loyal to their own nation of birth?

How fucking dumb are you? Use your brain

0

u/Mekroval 15h ago

Again with the personal attacks? I've got news for you buddy, we've got plenty of traitors right here on American soil some of whom climbed actual ladders on J6. Stop looking for bogeymen.

And stop calling names too. Are you five years old?

1

u/CountDraculablehbleh 15h ago

With that logic term limits shouldn’t be a thing which to be fair weren’t until FDR’s death and with that being said a perpetual American born president would almost always be better than a 8 year foreign born president

2

u/Mekroval 15h ago

I'm not really in favor of term limits either, lol. Also, why would a foreign born president be better than an American president-for-life? That isn't obvious to me.

You'd rather have a dictator over you who was born in this country through no choice of his own ... than a Constitutionally-limited foreign born president (who also had nothing to do with where he was born)?

2

u/CountDraculablehbleh 15h ago

A foreigner cannot be trusted to look after the best interests of the American people this could easily lead to foreign countries interfering at a much higher level to the point of molding from childhood to be political infiltrators

1

u/Mekroval 15h ago

Why can a foreigner be trusted to look after the interests of the American people in the Senate or House, or on the Supreme Court ... but not in the White House?

Also, why is a foreigner who grew up in the US more susceptible to interference than an American who grew up overseas?

It doesn't logically follow to me that someone who actually immigrated to this country to serve this country is less likely to be loyal to its interests, than someone who was born here but could have been raised anywhere, by anyone. Or who has themselves nefarious interests. The only thing that separates them realistically is that one happened to win the birth citizenship lottery, and the other didn't.

1

u/xxAkirhaxx 16h ago

The monkeys paw might curl with this one, while I agree that Mamdani would make a great president. What's to stop, literally anyone, from being propped up by the right interests. It seems like we have that now, but I think it could get worse. Like imagine if Israel, actually had a dood from Israel, funded by Israel, but just talked shit about Israel up and down, then got in office did what Trump did, but in a much smarter way? It's bad now, it could be worse.

6

u/Mekroval 16h ago

Couldn't that happen already, though? That's basically what we got with the current president. We have enough home grown nuts pumped up by foreign interests already, that I'm not too not sure how someone not born here could be much worse.

If they could fool the American electorate that persuasively, I don't think their natural born citizenship is going to be much of a barrier.

0

u/RainoHebrew 16h ago

If Trump runs for a 3rd term then I declare Mamdani can run for a 1st. If we’re ignoring the constitution, let’s at least make it interesting.

0

u/Mekroval 16h ago

Ditto.

-3

u/Major_LeeHungg 16h ago

Young Bernie... Yes please

-2

u/Due_Explanation5316 16h ago

An absolutely insane hope. Go wreck another country.

0

u/Boomshank 16h ago

Could you explain how he has or will ruin a country?
