Other The Battle of Atlanta took place today in 1864: The Confederate States of America lost this final major Civil War battle and was on track to cease to exist as a country, in which slavery was legally allowed and celebrated. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S Grant in Appomattox, VA in April 1865.
