I am looking at a few houses in this circle and am wondering if anyone has experience or comments on how safe the area is? Most of the listings I’m considering are just off Glenwood Rd, and I’ve driven through during daylight and at night and didn’t see too much to be concerned about.

I’m currently living right by the square, so I know it will be a bit of a downgrade from that, but I’m looking to buy and unfortunately would have to go south to find something in my price range . I’m concerned mostly about leaving my car in the driveway in this area, but get inconsistent answers when using online crime maps.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!

I moved to Decatur back in February and I am just floored almost every day by how much I love it here. I've lived in NYC, SoCal, Berlin, New Orleans, Dallas, San Antonio, Las Cruces NM -- and I honestly think Decatur might be my all-time favorite, as strange as that may seem. I landed in a peaceful, laid-back place that makes me feel completely at ease but also stimulated and engaged with my community.

I work in ATL and every single day I get home and see my leafy street and I am so relieved and happy to
be back in the neighborhood. I went to Seattle a couple of months back -- my favorite city -- and I remember feeling homesick.

I can't quite put my finger on it -- there is just something so gloriously Americana about this place. It feels like one of the classic suburbs that you grew up reading about or seeing in movies like Halloween or Donnie Darko. There is something vaguely traditional about it, yet at the same time it's progressive and forward thinking, the people here are deeply community oriented.

I live close to Glen Lake park, and when I drive by and see all the people at the pool, I get the warm fuzzies. There is a vibe in the air, everyone is super nice and it's just so freakin' gorgeous with all big old trees and cute houses.

Maybe I’m still in the honeymoon phase, but five months in, I find myself appreciating it more every day, not less. Moving here was the best decision that I've made in a couple of decades.

So what are some of the things that drew you to this place or keeps you here?

Anything that I might be missing?

EDIT: just want to comment that this has been a great discussion and that it's awesome to see so many others that share a similar enthusiasm for this great little suburb called Decatur. this place offers something special and I'm really grateful to have joined the community here.

My daughter is going to a school in this area and I want to move to be closer to her. I’m looking at some apartments.

I drink a 2 liter of Mountain Dew a day as that is the only thing I drink. This means I need about 30 two liters a month. I do not have a car so I need to buy them all at once and pay for a Lyft, since they're to heavy to carry on foot. Also, I can't afford $3 and something a bottle which is what most smaller stores within walking distance charge (which is why I can't buy it a bottle at a time daily and why I need wholesale pricing as well).

Previously I was trying to get "Mountain Splash" from Publix (as that is the only good tasting knockoff besides Save-A-Lot's Mountain Holler but they're not in this state). However, my orders often got cancelled and delayed because they just don't produce very many apparently and don't have extra. I tried calling wholesalers in the area but they only work with businesses. So basically, what I need is a way to get Mountain Dew at wholesale price (like $1.50) and I will have an order of 30 two liters every month (if two liters are a problem for some reason, I'm fine with smaller bottles as long as the math works). So if anyone owns a business and wants to make a small but guaranteed monthly profit please let me know.....or if anyone has any advice on where I can buy it this wholesale myself. Anything within Clarkson, Stone Mountain, or Decatur area is fine (can't go to far for pickup as I do have to factor in Lyft cost). Thanks.

I recently had a horrendous experience with Atlanta Gyn and OB (on Winn Way). I had been going there for years and had usually received amazing care, including during a high risk pregnancy. But I recently had a horrible experience with one of the midwives and their ultrasound tech and am currently fighting with their billing department because I am being charged for a very expensive procedure that I did not have.

I need to find a new OBGYN and would love any recommendations from folks in the area. preferably, they would be associated with Emory Decatur and have a competent administrative staff.

Hi all! I’m looking to move to the North Decatur / NDH area in a few months, and would love some feedback on my top apartment pick atm, Cortland 3131. I know it’s barely in Decatur, so I totally get if it doesn’t fit this sub, I just don’t know where else to ask haha. Does anyone have any suggestions for a therapist near Decatur? My son is level 1 on the spectrum. wwe’ve tried some in the past, but they never connected and he didn’t seem to care much about talking to them. We have one now he’s liking, but she’s all the way in vinnings and it’s becoming an issue with work and with school starting up I’m not sure how well it will go. Any help is appreciated.

Hi y'all. I've been talking to a young man who is homeless and basically at the end of his rope. He has not asked me for any money, etc. but I sent him enough for a week's bus pass.

He just wrote that his shoes fell apart. I'm way too far away to be any immediate help but this young man really needs someone to take an interest.

I told him maybe a church would have a clothing closet. But I can't imagine walking around in bare feet... Surely there is some kind person nearby that would be able to get this kid some shoes!! He's very reluctant to ask for help even though he desperately wants and needs it.

Apparently he sleeps on a bench in a park.

Hi! We’re hoping to get some recommendations for pest control (rats!!) that goes beyond baiting and setting traps.

We’ve been working with Breda, who have been pretty good, but realize that our issue is beyond their scope.

Based on Breda’s inspection, the rats have been chewing through the foundation and coming into the house walls from down below. We live in a very old house with complicated ownership: owner is elderly and quite cheap, but we’d rather fix the problem and discuss reimbursement later since we’re starting the process of growing our family and don’t want to do that in a rat house, and moving isn’t an option right now.

We aren’t sure what avenue to take - is this even a pest control problem at this point, or should we be hiring another type of company to inspect and address completely blocking the rats’ points of entry?

Anybody else dealing with some sleep disrupting sounds? I'm not sure where else to post. I contacted DeKalb county, roads, and the nonemergency line. The construction starts at like 3am or 3pm sometimes. When the jackhammer and generators and trucks stop, I finally sleep. I'm considering ending my lease early. I'm going to die with out sleep. Is there anything I can do to prevent the nonstop house shaking and soul sucking sounds?

A former indoor mall being reborn as a live-work-play community near Decatur is adding a bit of adventure to its retail mix.

Outdoors retailer L.L.Bean plans to open its first Georgia store in Lulah Hills, the redevelopment of the former North DeKalb Mall, project developer Edens said in a news release.

The Maine-based retailer known for rugged outdoors gear, footwear and home goods was founded in 1912 and has more than 70 stores across the U.S., according to its website. The company would join other adventure retailers such as REI, Orvis, Patagonia and High Country Outfitters with locations in the Atlanta area.

I've been with Decatur Smiles for years and am beyond over their shenanigans - too many times I've booked an appointment and it turns out the dentist isn't actually there (or in a team meeting, as if the apt wasn't scheduled 6 months in advance!) but I'm billed for that anyway. Poorly done crown that made my night guard useless, after they told me they would fit it appropriately, which broke after 1 year. I could go on

Anyone have a dentist they love? I've heard Atlanta Dental Spa is solid - anyone have experience there?

My home needs repairs both small and substantial in scope. It's a very unique home that requires a bit more specialized of handling. We are only trying to do right by it.

The search for a handyman/contractor has started and it's extremely stressful. Recommendations would be highly appreciated. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work and does right by their clients over and over again. Someone we can hire for years to come.
