Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ how can i make the most out of my summer?

hey everyone. i was just wondering if anyone has any ideas for what i could do in surrey this summer to have fun? not to give anyone a sob story, but i have depression and anxiety and i don’t really live in the best situation. i don’t have any friends either. i live a bit away from the beach and i’d love to go, but i can’t because i can’t take the car by myself, and i don’t want to go with my family because we don’t get along. i just want to get out of the house and do something fun. i’m 20F, and i like shopping, fashion, movies, reading, and typical girl stuff. i live in newton. i’ve tried looking on Meetup and Flock, but there’s nothing for people my age in my area, and i can’t really travel very far. i was never allowed to take the bus growing up, so i never learned how to use it. i’ve thought about taking the bus somewhere nearby just to practice, but i’m really bad with directions and i’m worried about getting lost somewhere i’m not familiar with. i guess i’m just asking if anyone has any ideas for things i could do this summer. preferably something that isn’t too expensive since i don’t really have much money. i’m tired of sitting at home reading every day.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Alley parking/Fire lane

Multiple signs in an alley behind homes that say “no parking fire lane”. Every evening however multiple cars park halfway into the alley ways behind these homes.

Is there any point reporting them if it’s always in the evening? My concern is if there actually is a fire in the middle of the night and they need to get down our alley they won’t be clear.

Houses on one side of alley and townhouses on the other. Cars park on side with houses.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Any nice spots to go at night?

Does anyone know a good spot to go alone at night, somewhere with a nice view, or a secluded beach type spot, or anywhere that would be a good spot for someone to go and spend some time clearing their mind and etc? Are beaches closed at night time? Also a new driver, so preferring somewhere close to surrey, but open to any suggestions...

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Mountainview Montessori

I would really appreciate hearing from any parents of Mountainview Montessori students how they are liking (or disliking) the school! We have been offered a spot in Grade 1 and unfortunately as it is summer have no time to visit the school or speak to anyone there before September. Thank you!!

Housing 🏡 Fencing Company in Surrey for Fence Replacement?

I want to get my fence replaced that wraps around my yard. My wood fence is badly rotted and in terrible condition. I am open to choosing between vinyl and wood. I've heard good things about vinyl. Anyone get their fence replaced recently and who did a good job for you?

Since civic plaza fan fest is no more, I see the final is going to be shown at Holland park, does anyone know if it's like an open seating area, or bring your own chairs? How early to show up

Housing 🏡 Financially ready for a car, but the parking situation in King George is holding me back.

Financially ready to affort a vehicle.

Wanted to get a secure parking spot.

Asked permission to post on building's community board. Rejected.

I have been looking for a parking spot online for a week. Could not find any.

The vehicle I wanted to buy was sold to another guy.

Questioning if I really need a dedicated parking spot.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Where to get slip resistant shoes at Guildford mall?

Hello everyone! Just wondering what stores carry slip resistant shoes at guildford mall. I'm not sure if any normal footwear store would have a pair so I was just wondering if anyone knew stores that 100% have them. I need to pay using guildford giftcards, so I am unable to go to any other stores outside of the mall.

Does anyone also know if Marks takes the mall giftcards? I feel like my best bet would be to go there for the shoes

Ask SurreyBC ❓ People who've been to K Pop Karaoke Pub specifically (but even karaoke in general would be helpful) please help answer some questions to help me plan the night! I'm so stressed!

Specifically regarding K Pop Karaoke Pub

Apparently they serve food there. I know it's not like, MEAL food but it's appetizer type food right? And there's a dining area for this?
I see pictures of seating and tables so I assume people meet up there for snacks and drinks before karaoke?

Can you also eat in the room?
I'm so confused about the dining part of the place. If yes you can eat in the room, do people reserve the room and meet up there and eat before singing? But... I feel like that's dumb because you have to pay for the room per hour so if you waste an hour in there not singing you're paying to eat. So then is my first question about the dining area what people usually do?

TL/DR of my 2nd question: BASICALLY I just am wondering for how long experienced karaoke-goers think I should reserve a room for 13 people.

Longer version of that one:

Do you think a minimum of 3 hours is adequate? Will that be rushed or too long?
Trying to figure out what time to plan the meet up and reserve the room.
Like I think we'll probably want to leave by 10:30 MAYBE some of us 11, so I have no idea if reserving the room for 7pm is too early or too late.
There will be 13 of us and if each person takes 10 mins to choose and then sing just one song, that's already over 2 hours. So to have fun and not be rushed, does 7:00/7:30 seem like a good time to reserve the room at?
Do people just go in and instantly sing non stop til they leave? If that is the case then it could be over super fast especially if not everyone sings.

Thank you. 🙏

If you think I'm over thinking it, listen. I can't even plan dinner for the week let alone a gathering of 13 people into 1 place I've never been before, and I have NO ONE to help me. So I'm asking strangers. 😭

Sports 🏅 First in BC cricket history, Surrey batsman hits six sixes in one over

Wanted to share this incredible sporting achievement that happened on Canada Day. Believed to be a first in BC cricket history, local Surrey cricketer hit six sixes in a single over. For non-cricket fans, this is comparable to hitting 4 home runs in one game. It is a rare feat in the cricket world so it’s amazing to see this happening locally!
