Ask Coquitlam Advice & recommendation for AC Repair

Hello,

Our central AC unit broke down and I'm looking for recommendations on someone trustworthy to fix or replace it. It's a 2.5 ton system that's about 10 years old now.

When the thermostat calls for cool air, the indoor unit turns on but not the outdoor unit. I had someone come to check and said it's a refrigerant leak, but they only recommended to top it up and not fix the leak for $750 which seemed odd. When asked, they said it's difficult to find leaks and often not worth the money. They also offered to replace the indoor and outdoor unit for $7,000 + gst.

I asked a second company over the phone and it'll be $800 + gst to refill and come back in a few weeks to look for the leak. If the leak is indoors it'll be 3k to fix. A new indoor/outdoor unit will be 6.5k.+ gst.

I have no idea if I'm getting my tail pulled here and need advice. Do you know anyone reliable and honest who can come take a look? I just find it unbelievable I have to drop 7-8k on a new unit, when I think the average lifespan of these are 12 to 15 years.

Thank you!!

PSA Scammers targeting seniors in PoCo

Hi everyone,

Two young men came to my father in law's today saying that they wanted to give him a free fire blanket and had to show him how to use it inside his house. My father in law has Parkinson's and luckily my mother in law was there to question these young men. They had no identification, no uniforms, no badges and somehow they knew my father in law's name. They said their manager told them to come to his house to give it. They had phoned him before and said he won a blanket. He's an old man with Parkinson's and obviously got confused.

We're very frustrated because he's a vulnerable senior. We're going to phone the police to give a description. Has anyone else dealt with this before? Anyone else with vulnerable family members, please be aware of this. Apparently it's a scam where people come into your house and assess your valuables. this was around the lagoon near Terry Fox secondary.

New to the Coquitlam community!

I'm really keen to be part of the action and wondered if there was a community events calendar much like PoMo has here: https://pdfhost.io/v/LtbuvPdfGq_Port_Moody_Events_Newsletter_July_Aug_2026

Thanks!

Ask Coquitlam Why there are water restrictions every year and why so hard this year?

Been living here for 4 years and every time there are water restrictions.

What's the reason? If it's a one off thing I can understand, but if it's every year, the water supply is insufficient.

This summer felt way more rainy than the last 2, yet the restriction is more severe (level 3).

Could somebody explain what is going on with the water?

Neat looking clouds over poco/coquitlam. They look like they all converge into one point. Apparently they're made entirely from ice crystals in the troposphere above 20000ft high.

Ask Coquitlam Kelowna Amber Alert

Why should we be woken up by a Kelowna Amber Alert when we’re in Coquitlam? Not everyone is affected. Some people have serious health conditions, and province wide alerts can do more harm than good. Why alert the entire province for a localized emergency?

Discussion Best place to find warehouse space for rent?

I’m looking to find a space for rent in the tri-cities, preferably Coquitlam / Port Moody. Any realtors recommended? I have been looking online but the listings don’t include detailed information like ceiling heights, so I think working with an experienced commercial realtor would be the best approach.

Ask Coquitlam ❗️Helping small- medium sized businesses get more leads and customers!❗️

My name is Lauren and I am a 15 year old website builder!

I help local businesses get leads and find more customers!

My websites include an AI powered chatbot to send booking references directly to your business email, as well as any other information you may want it to include, such as a menu of services or products!

I can show a demo of the website within 1 day of interest, via a link or a call.

The website is completely free to take a look at, if you decide you do want the website it would just be around $400-$800 depending on time and a (optional) $80 monthly management fee!

Ask Coquitlam Starbucks at Coquitlam center

Does the Starbucks at Coquitlam center still offer free water?

I usually bring my own water in mu water whenever I go out so I have to buy drinks when I get thirsty.

Today I forgot to bring since I thought it was just a short trip. Anyways it ended up way longer than suspect and I got thirsty so I decided to go Starbucks to get some water and was surprised they don't offer free water anymore. The Bastia said inahbe to order something if I want water. It was around 6:15pm and I don't see anyone linning up so is not busy.

I ended up getting a bottle of water from Wal Mart since I need to buy some stuff there anyways..... And yea I forgot about the water fountain inside the mall.....

Ask Coquitlam Good tailors that dont overcharge

Hi neighbours, I have been looking for good tailors to work on clothes to fit my body shape and so far it has been quite bleak. Even when I went to very expensive ones they still mess up and ruined one of suit jackets. Does anyone have any recommendations for tailors they have been working with that know what they are doing?

Thank you!

Ask Coquitlam Indoor Sprinting Spaces

Wondering if there are any indoor track or covered spaces to sprint at once the weather starts to get worse. Right now it’s hardly an issue with the sun out but once fall rolls around that’s going to change.

If you have suggestions please let me know, surrounding areas like Port Moody and PoCo work too!

Ask Coquitlam Telus Mobility

Hi I was wondering if other people in the coquitlam area have been struggling with the Telus mobile network? I have telus 5G and live around the Lafarge lake area but I will frequently have 5 bars of 5G service but only get ~10 Mpbs of download speed. Ive tried just about everything that I can fix on my device (reinstalling esim, changing APN settings, restarting network settings) was trying to see if this a Telus network issue or something wrong with my phone/device/connection. Any data points on the telus network in the coquitlam central area is greatly appreciated!

Discussion Grocery Shopping PoCo

Where to grocery shop in PoCo that’s still affordable and good quality?

I was in NoFrills (off Lougheed) and noticed the prices were significantly higher than Walmart, Costco, etc. The Siggy’s yogurt I usually buy was $8 at no frills compared to $6.40 at Walmart. I’ve noticed this with several other items at this specific No Frills location over the past few month and am looking for other stores to shop.

We usually shop at Costco then supplement with Walmart and occasionally, meridian for meat. Wondering if anyone would recommend any other local stores.

Discussion Is there a significant increase in Black Bear sightings for 2026?

So yesterday at around 6 pm I opened my front door to go to the grocery store and saw a pretty large blackbear in my front yard about 6 feet from the door. This is the 2nd time a black bear has been in my front yard in 3 weeks and the 5th time one has been in my neighbourhood (That I am aware of) this summer. My number of personal black bear sightings this summer is like 15-20 so far I've stopped counting. I obviously live in Northern Coquitlam. 3rd year at this house but also lived in Poco for 7 years.

I understand black bear activity increases in the summer, I always see social media posts about sightings every year but never pay attention be bear aware, don't leave out garbage blah blah blah. It's usually like maybe 7-10 sightings a summer for me if I recall correctly? We're only in July and I'm at like almost 20.

Is there any data to support this or am I imagining it? I get its only July so probably not and won't be available until months from now. Does anyone share this sentiment or noticed a similar pattern for this year specifically? Is there a rationale behind this or is it coincidental I've just been out a lot this year and happened to see many. Would love some input even if its just annecdotal experiences.

Update: OK general consensus is most people feel like they're seeing significantly more bears than previous years I am not crazy but a couple of people claiming to have seen less. Will be interested to see if this trend continues over the next few years or slows down.
