I saw this on the straight path east of the pond in burnaby this morning. Definitely not a wildlife expert but I immediately thought it looked like bear scat.

Photo/Video Filming at 435 North Road? Former RBC location

Noticed a film crew set up at 435 North Road today, way more people than usual for this spot. They’ve one of the units with a “Newton Credit Union” sign, which doesn’t seem to be a real branch. Anyone know what’s being filmed here?

Burnaby Mountain Gondola

What is the hold up on the funding for the the Burnaby Mountain Gondola? It would be such a good thing for Burnaby and turn the mountain into a tourist destination.

It seems like an easy win for the Mayors council or Province. The project is already approved, they just need funding.

Can we see English Bay fireworks from Brentwood high-rises?

My partner recently moved into a Brentwood high-rise and she faces South/West, we're curious if any Brentwood residences were able to see fireworks at English Bay last year (Celebration of Lights)?

Anybody in NE Burnaby with Rogers have terrible WiFi lately?

I'm wondering if its something only I'm dealing with or if others have noticed this too.

It'll get "no internet" many times per day randomly for 1 to 20 minutes. I'm not sure where to go to report this, or if they'd even care, seeing as they are the only option for WiFi anyways.

PSA: Attempted distraction theft at Winners on Lougheed Highway, Brentwood

TLDR: My experience of an attempt at distraction theft today at Winners on Lougheed Highway, Brentwood, Burnaby today. I am taking the time to write this because thanks to a notice someone posted on this subreddit about a successful distraction theft in Brentwood a month or so ago, I could recognize it more quickly for what it was and prevent the theft from happening.

What happened: I was on the phone to my partner and pushing my baby in their stroller in Winners while looking at some beauty products; an easy target: distracted mother on her own. No sooner had I put the phone down to my husband and shoved my phone in my crossbody bag did a woman come up to me and ask me where the fake nails were.

She was so direct I thought she had mistaken me for a sales associate. But then my brain raised an alarm in my body: she couldn't be mistaking me for a sales associate because she saw me pushing my baby in the stroller. I then became aware I hadn't closed my body bag and my phone was half hanging out. I grabbed at my body bag and shoved my phone in deeper. But then when I saw that she too seemed to be with a baby in a stroller, I felt guilty and didn't zip it up straight away.

Then it just so happened that we were stood right in front of the fake nails - another odd coincidence. She grabbed at the packets, invading my personal space and asked me which ones I preferred for her. Once again, my body raised the alarm once I had realised the following: I was stepping further away from my baby, my body bag was still open, amd we were uncomfortably close. It also dawned on me that now this woman had almost blocked me from getting past her and back to my baby.

I managed to shut down the conversation and had to almost push past her to get back to my baby. I checked my body bag immediately. My phone was still there thankfully and I zipped up the bag.

My unease about the situation felt so strong that I felt both scared to pay for my goods and scared to walk home. I literally looked over my shoulder the whole way back and chose the busiest route to get there. It was only when I got home and typed some key words into google that I learned the phrase "distraction theft" and realised this was what was going on.

I know this was long but I want people to be aware of the details of this story so that just like for me, if anything similar happens to you, you recognize it for what it is.

I thought the list below was good for people to take measures to stay safe, and hopefully redditors can add more ways to stay safe in the comments:

  • Be cautious of strangers in your personal space or attempting to hug you

  • Do not accept unwanted gifts from strangers

  • Don’t be afraid to say no or yell for help if you feel uncomfortable

  • Walk away from any suspicious person or behaviour and report it to police immediately

I will be reporting it to the Police and the store manager tomorrow. Stay safe and trust your instincts if something feels off!!

Local News Injured bear at Korea town/ North Road yesterday

Thumbnail gallery
309 Upvotes

A very polite young bear came through my neighbourhood yesterday. I had my camera on me and caught a few good photos of him, but most noticeably I caught images of a pretty bad injury to his rear right paw. The injury seems pretty bad, as he kept his paw lifted when he ran around between big scratching sessions. After making his way through every rat trap in Korea town, he limped around the parking lots, startling the occasional pedestrian that was buried in their phone, and getting a ton of attention from everyone else.

Eventually he found a quiet and bushy place to get away from all the attention and stayed there until after dark.

This fella seems to have no interest in confrontation, he'll leave you alone if you leave him alone. He'll even take a longer, more inconvenient route for himself if his path is obstructed by people, but he will absolutely take a chance with walking right by people if he's startled.

Some of these photos appear to be taken quite close to him, but rest assured, thats a product of the lens I was using, and there were significant barriers between us for the couple of close ups I did get.

Photo of the injury to the paw in the last image.

Coach needed in New West July 27-31

Not exactly about Burnaby, but if you are a resident of Burnaby and fit this bill, I hope that counts!

Hello, my name is Geoff, I run 2-4-1 Sports New West, and I'm in need of a coach for next week!

We offer multi-sport programming to elementary school-aged kids for a couple of weeks in the summer and some Pro-D days at schools that have us.

We believe in sport as a vehicle to create confident and healthy movement habits and help develop critical life skills. Our camps are first and foremost fun. We want kids to explore various sports, games, activities, whatever. Just make sure they are moving with a smile.

Our coaches are generally some combination of PE teachers, former college (or higher) athletes, former multi-sport athletes into high school, high five certified, educational assistants, and more. Basically believe in the value of sport to develop humans and love working with kids.

Pay range is $900-1300 for the week, depending on qualifications and experience. If you have kids that are in elementary school, they attend for free. We also buy lunch every day for camp staff.

Please send me a DM if you are interested, or email me at Geoff {at}241play.org

Looking for a pickleball buddy in North Burnaby! :)

I’m fairly new to pickleball and hoping to find someone to rally with and improve together.

Brentwood would be ideal (or anywhere else in North Burnaby) since it’s close by and easier for me to get to.

If you’re interested in meeting up for a game or know of a beginner-friendly group in the area, send me a message!

Would you support limited off-leash hours at Civic Square? 🐶

Hi neighbours! A few local dog owners have started a petition asking the City of Burnaby to consider designated off-leash hours at Civic Square.

Civic Square has naturally become a gathering place for neighbours, kids and friendly dogs. Many of us have met new friends there, and the dogs bring a lot of joy and community connection to the space.

We’re not asking for it to become a full-time dog park. The idea is to explore something more balanced, such as:

  • limited off-leash hours in the early morning or evening
  • a trial period to see how it works
  • clear rules requiring owners to supervise and clean up
  • keeping busy family hours dog-free or leash-only

There aren’t many convenient off-leash options within walking distance for people living around Metrotown, especially for seniors, families and people without cars.

Of course, Civic Square belongs to everyone, so I’d also love to hear concerns or suggestions about how this could work safely and fairly.

Please consider signing and sharing the petition if you support the idea:

Would limited off-leash hours make sense to you?

Hi!

Just a PSA if anyone has recently lost their bird.

A small yellow bird has been spotted in the trees around Riverway golf course. Its been hanging around for this past week. Seems very timid and wary of people.
