The city's first two public grocery stores are set for La Marqueta (East Harlem) and Hunts Point. I mapped what supermarkets near those sites charge this week

Disclosure up front: I build a free tool that reads NYC supermarket circulars (it is in my profile), and this post is just data, no link in it.

Two sites for the planned city-run grocery stores have been named so far: La Marqueta in East Harlem, and the Peninsula in Hunts Point in the Bronx. The Hunts Point store is set to open first, in 2027. So here is a baseline of what the supermarkets already near each site are advertising this week.

Cheapest advertised price on five staples. Nearest stores within about a mile of La Marqueta, and about a mile and a half of the Hunts Point site:

Item Near La Marqueta Near Hunts Point Cheapest in an NYC ad this week
Chicken thighs (Perdue, bone-in), lb $1.99 $1.99 $1.69 (Staten Island)
Ground beef, 80% lean, lb $6.99 $3.99 $3.99
Granny Smith apples, lb $1.49 $1.49 $0.79 (Brooklyn)
White sandwich bread, loaf $1.99 $1.99 $1.99
Barilla pasta, 1 lb box $1.67 (3/$5) $1.33 (3/$4) about $1.25

A couple of items that only showed up on one side this week: yellow bananas at $0.69/lb near La Marqueta, and Idaho potatoes at $0.79/lb near the Hunts Point site.

Whatever you think of the plan, this is the price bar those new stores will have to beat, and I plan to keep publishing it here each week.

Prices are from the stores' published circulars, verify in store.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

  * Tornado Watch for portions of...Central and Southern New York

  * Effective this Tuesday afternoon and evening from 205 PM until 900 PM EDT.

  * Primary threats include...
    A couple tornadoes possible
Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely
Scattered large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible

SUMMARY...Thunderstorm intensity has recently increased from central
New York across eastern Pennsylvania, in the vicinity of a warm
front moving northward/northeastward across the region. Deep-layer
shear is forecast to increase with some increase in low to mid-level
flow as well. This increased shear could support some more organized
storm structures capable of producing tornadoes as these storms
continue eastward. Damaging gusts are possible as well, particularly
as storms trend towards a more linear structure over time. Another
round of storms is possible later this evening, and some severe
threat will accompany these storms as well.

JetBlue wins Spirit Airlines slots at LaGuardia Airport

JetBlue Airways has won 22 takeoff and landing slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport from the defunct Spirit Airlines with a bid of $58.5 million, pending regulatory approvals.

Frontier Airlines' $57.5 million bid will serve as a backup offer should JetBlue's fall through.

The airline also aims to return to LaGuardia's Terminal A, previously operated by Spirit, according to an internal memo seen by CNBC.

The move comes as JetBlue expands operations in Florida while reducing its presence at LaGuardia and Newark.

NYC people can ignore almost anything except a World Cup replay on a giant screen

The funniest part of watching at Rockefeller wasnโ€™t even the match. It was seeing people walk past like they had absolutely no interest, then slow down, look back at the replay and quietly join the crowd.

Office workers, tourists, delivery guys, people carrying shopping bags everyone suddenly had an opinion on the same play.

Only in Midtown can a two-minute VAR check create an audience out of people who were all supposedly in a hurry.

Saw an eagle grabbing dinner on the Hudson this evening.

I was at riverbank state park this evening when I thought I saw a red tailed hawk circling in the sky. There have been a lot of red tails up here since covid (one stared me down on my fire escape) so I was excited and watched its movements as it circled down to the water before snatching something up and flying towards me. As I scrambled to record it I realized how huge this bird was, like almost as big as the top half of my body. Never realized there were eagles hanging out in Manhattan.

Edit: if this is not in fact an eagle, please help me identify it.
