This is a Mepps Black Fury appreciation post. Way back in 1994 I caught my first pike from Lake Muskoka on a #3 size Black Fury. 30 years I caught my first muskie from shore using the #5 size. I also caught my biggest brown trout using the #3 also. Post your Mepps Black Fury fish here! Cast da Mepps! #meppsspinners

Question Does Fluorocarbon have more abrasion resistance than Mono?

Upvotes

I’m trying to figure out what’s better for me to use around docks and pylons.

When I went to google to find out which has more abrasion resistance I got so many conflicting answers.

Does anyone truly know which is more resistant?

Question Starting out farther and son

Upvotes

My 7 year old son has well and truly caught the fishing bug!

He’s been asking to go fishing for ages, and as part of our family holiday we’ve just been out on a bass charter at Walt Disney World in Florida. We had an amazing time, caught plenty of bass, and now we’re both completely hooked.

We live in East Sussex, UK, so when we get home we’ll mainly be fishing locally. From what I’ve read, perch seem like they’ll be our closest equivalent to bass fishing, although I’m still very much learning.
While I’m still in Orlando, I’d love to take advantage of Bass Pro Shops and pick up the essentials before heading home. We each need a rod and reel. My son is only 7, but he picked up using a spinning outfit really quickly on the charter. The guide actually suggested skipping a push button combo and going straight to a spinning setup because he was casting confidently by the end.

I’d really appreciate some advice on what to buy while I’m here.

I’m looking for recommendations on:
A good spinning rod and reel for me.
A suitable spinning rod and reel for a confident 7 year old.

Lures that will work well for UK perch when we get home.

Any other essential tackle or bits of kit that are worth buying in the US before I head back. We have nothing rig but now.

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to making this a hobby we can enjoy together!

Freshwater White perch or bass?

Post image
9 Upvotes

White perch? White bass? I was the first to catch a big fish and I was like it’s a small mouth bass! And my husband and dad said it was a white perch. I was looking at it and thought it had a stripe, so maybe a white bass? The dorsal fin looks wide.
Anyways, bass or perch?

since some of you guys were invested/interested in my last post about this reel, i thought i’d share what the internals also look like (months after cleaning) for it being found in the bottom of a very silty river bed……there way cleaner then the outside as expected, but i’d of thought since there was rusting on the outside, and corrosion on some parts before cleaning, that there would be some sort of damage/corrosion to the gears…..to my surprise there isn’t…..and everything in this reel is mechanically working….the only thing that seemed to degrade a lot, is the paint, some heads to pins (rusted), some rusted parts on the reel body itself, and a plastic drag washer that completely disintegrated upon removing it when i cleaned the reel.

hope you guys like this post aswell. tight lines anglers!

found this old mitchell 300 on the river and i’m going to give it a second chance at life i think. found this reel in much worse condition then it is now, super muddy, dirt in the gears and any other crevice you might think of.

i busted the reel down entirely and cleaned it up, re oiled and greased it, the metal on metal sound you may hear is from the housing hitting the spool upon reeling, nothing i can do about that other then try to bend it back somehow, but it doesn’t seem to mess with anything so i’m thinking of leaving that alone.

there was a plastic disc under the drag assembly but it was so corroded it fell apart upon removing it so that isn’t there anymore. apart from that and the terrible paint peel, the reel operates smoothly and seems to be fine.

thoughts on what i can do for the paint would be appreciated.

Didn't catch much besides little pinfish, an undersized flounder and stringray. I finally got my filets halfway decent and wanted to share, it was delicious. I used a little Lowry's seasoned salt and black pepper!

Question Broken reel

Hi guys! I recently bought my first fishing rod about 2 months ago. I’ve only taken it out maybe 3 times. It’s the ugly stick 50th anniversary fishing rod. When I bought the rod, the reel was on the opposite side that I wanted it on, but I let it be until I was ready to change it. I went out last night and had a slow night fishing so I figured let me change it, I unscrewed the side keeping it secure and the little bobber hopped right into the water and sank straight down.
My issue now is that I can’t keep the reel together now. I’ve googled to see if I can just buy the part instead of a new reel but it seems like they do not sell they separate and it’s apparently very hard to find the piece size that will fit.
Does anyone know the piece size or what else I could do? It’s a $50 rod so is it easier to just buy a new one?
I’ve attached pictures of the fishing pole and the piece I am now missing. Thank you for all the help in advance!
