The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

Fishing tattoo, just wanted to share

Post image

Before I get a ton of hate, I realize this does not resemble really any species of fish, it’s just a generic fish looking design. This was a cheap flash tattoo, not a custom choice.

I went on a week long fishing trip to northern Minnesota a few weeks ago. We rented a boat and the fishing was amazing. Unfortunately, since I’ve come back, I’ve been absolutely miserable. I bought a fishing kayak in an attempt to get myself on the lake, but it’s a steep learning curve and the fishing where I live just isn’t the same. Growing up, we would always go to northern Minnesota for vacations to fish, and it had been 15 years since I last made that trip. It jolted awake something in me from my childhood, something that I’ve longed for for years. Yesterday, I saw this flash tattoo become available, and I decided immediately that I wanted to get it. I wanted something to keep reminding me of the times I’ve had fishing in northern Minnesota, and a way to keep a piece of that happiness with me. The fact that this flash just popped up as this particular time in my life seemed meant to be. It was cheap enough, so I went for it.

Really I just wanted to share my new tattoo with some folks who would understand the joy that fishing has brought me over the years, and the longing that I have for it. In my current season of life, I am trying to find joy where I can, and this was a small way for me to make a real mark of something that lives inside of me.

As a side note, I’ll take any advice on Iowa fishing and kayak fishing anyone wants to share. I keep getting skunked here and it’s disappointing. I see other people catching fish on my lakes Facebook page, so I know they exist. I’ve been fishing for largemouth bass, but I’d be happy to catch some bluegill as well. I also know there’s cats in this lake, but I’ve never done catfish fishing and I’m a little nervous about the fight since I’m new to fishing from a kayak.

Thanks for reading.

Looking to start yet another Kayak fishing channel and wondering if y’all have any ideas on how to achieve this ‘up high from behind’ point of view.

I’ve attached some examples.

I have a quick question. For those who own this boat, what battery are you using? I have one on order and want to make sure the battery comes in at the same time.

How do I get my 11.5 outlaw to the water?

So I’ve been fortunate because my uncle has left his truck at my house for when he’s in town (hardly ever is) and let me use it.It’s been awesome, it allowed me to add things like a Newport 300 to this absolute pig of a yak. Unfortunately, he’s going to be taking his truck back home with him in the nearish future. My 2023 Mazda 3 owners manual says don’t tow with it. I don’t think there is any shot that I can load and unload this thing onto a roof rack myself (I used to put it on a roof rack but I had a fishing buddy that’s not around anymore always help me with it). I know it’s a long shot but if anyone has ideas any help would be appreciated.

Inflatable fishing kayak options in the USA?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I looking to get back into kayak fishing and am requiring a portable inflatable option.

I'm based in Australia and the only Yak that fits my needs (a transom mount in the back and able to handle 150kg/330+lbs)

Is the pictured Primyl Predator hd330.

Whilst it's the easy choice for me it's also pretty much the ONLY choice for the Australian domestic market.

I would like to know what my fisho mates from the US may use?

I'm open to getting one shipped to me if there are some better options.

Cheers

Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game vs. Jackson Kayak Cuda 14

Facebook marketplace listing - seller is asking $650 per kayak. I'm still looking for a first kayak - a few questions:

  1. Are either of these a good first kayak?
  2. Which is the better deal?
  3. Anything to know before going to look at them? Obviously check for cracks, damage, etc. and ideally see it float.

Thanks!

First time

Going kayak fishing for the first time tomorrow in saltwater, what should I bring? (Besides fishing gear and a pfd). Also I don’t have an anchor, is it absolutely necessary for water less than 6ft? (Going to be fishing some flats)

Recommendation on fishing Kayak

Just got into fishing and have been fishing from shore. I’d like to get a kayak for one person. Does anyone here have bought use their kayak for fishing and where are you buying from? I was told to not get the inflatable version since the reefs would puncture it.

Crescent Primo

Well yall I just got my second kayak ever and excited is an understatement!! I am upgrading from a Pelican Classic Catch 100 to now a fairly new lightly used Crescent Primo. Got a steal off marketplace for $550 🙌🏼 it already has the foam pad deck installed from previous owner thankfully. What else should I look to add for river smallmouth fishing besides gear tracks, rod holders, and anchor system?? Suggestions, thoughts welcome and would love to just hear other people experiences with this kayak or any of the Crescents in general!! Tight lines 🛶🎣

Maiden voyage on the Teton, man did I realize quickly the importance of staying organized. Need a few leashes & to find a better place for my net than wedged behind the seat and I think the bases are covered. May add a cheap fish finder for depth purposes mainly, but unsure how the transducer will be while hauling the boat in the truck.

Found a couple hogs on the BFS

Wizard FCS (Foot Control Steering) was such a MASSIVE improvement over my previous steering setup.

They work so well and the eccentric bushings and ball bearings allow you to adjust the resistance.

Newport Steering Problems

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has figured out how to improve steering authority while trolling with a downrigger and stern mounted motor. I mainly troll for salmon in the PNW.

I’m running a Newport NK180 on a Navarre Offset mount to the starboard side, a Pacific Yak Angler P3 rudder, and a Cannon Easitroll on a V-lock next to my seat on the port side (my old Brocraft is pictured).

I currently have the motor fixed and steer with the PYA P3 rudder. Without the downrigger deployed, the kayak steers decently, with some mild difficulty turning right over 70% throttle. As soon as I drop the ball, all bets are off, and the kayak pulls hard to left and right turns are impossible, especially at salmon trolling depths.

Does anyone have a fix? I understand the downrigger creates a huge amount of drag so I’m open to any ideas.

Steering stick? Tim Percy steering? Foot steering? Switch to a bow mount motor?
