State of Local Emergency in Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis Improvement District and Kananaskis Country have issued a State of Local Emergency due to ongoing rainfall and localized flooding affecting road access and several recreation areas.

Some road access remains limited in parts of Kananaskis Country. We are actively working to establish road access for those currently unable to leave the area. Visitors in the area are asked to remain where they are if it is safe to do so. William Watson Lodge and Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre are available as a temporary shelter for those who require a safe, dry place to stay.

Visitors are encouraged to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve. Impacted reservations will be automatically cancelled and refunded.

Emergency teams continue to coordinate response efforts and are monitoring infrastructure, supporting campground operations, and maintaining road closures where needed.

Updates will be provided as available on this webpage:

Is fishing at DeWitt pond any good?

I'm going fishing with my dad next week. We're both total beginners and DeWitt seemed decently promising but I'm just wondering if the fishing is actually any good there. If it sucks, I'd also really appreciate any good areas for beginners to go fishing.

thanks

Shoutout to Zach who found my tacklebox - Oldman River

I was down fishing the Oldman river last week and took my (new) puppy with me...what a handful. Long story short, constantly stopping to untangle my tethered pup (Dani), then moving up and down the shoreline I forgot my tacklebox...4hrs later Im in Coleman and going to resuming fishing and I realize i cant find my tackle box. I race back the 50km to where i was on the Oldman River and ask a guy if hes seen my tacklebox. He says no - at that point my heart sunk, it was day 2 of a 10day trip - "but my buddy did!" Danny(?) walked about a km or more downstream with me looking for his buddy then returning to the parking lot after not having found him. I wandered upstream a bit and hear him yelling hes right there! Ahead of me about 50m on the other side of some trees. Relief. Zach, as long as Im alive, you will never die thirsty. I reached into my wallet to give him some money, but he refused. The world needs more people like this guy. I cant thank you enough.

Trout lures

Can anyone recommend lures for rainbow trout? Heading to Carson Pegasus this week and fishing from the shore, I’d love for my kid to be able to catch something. We never seem to have any luck. I’ve seen people use pickerel rigs and the colorful marshmallows you can buy at the grocery store and we bought that set up to try.

Fishing Devon River Valley/Edmonton Area

Been dipping my toes a bit more into fishing and with no current access to a boat or dock have been struggling to find good shore fishing that isn’t over grown with weeds. Really just hoping to find some good spots in the river valley or some lakes in the area.

I’ll be in the Calgary area and am looking for good spots to at least start from to try and catch some trout along the bow

I turned lake depth surveys into a free fishing map for ~20,000 lakes. Would love feedback from people who actually fish these waters

Fishing Spot Recommendations for a weekend in the mountains

Hi everyone, just looking for a recommendation on what lake/body of water to hit up for a weekend up in the mountains near Calgary or Rocky mountain. Fiance and I are wanting to give fishing specifically any trout species a try and we don't mind a bit of hiking. We'll most likely check in on a hotel near the city and drive from there. Thanks a bunch in advance. Cheers!

Shore Fishing Jasper

I have read the few posts about this in the sub-reddit but there havn't been many helpful answers so I'll give it another go.

I'll be in Jasper over the weekend, I am an experienced angler from northern AB and this isn't a fishing trip per se but I'd like to take my gf out for a little shore fishing expedition for a couple hours. We are only looking to shore fish, we don't fly fish so will mainly be running small spoons/spinners and am looking for any trout if possible, I understand depth is king for mountain trout lakes but again, boating isn't an option. I've read up about the pike fishing on Talbot which I'll keep in my back pocket but has anyone had luck from shore at Pyramid or Mildred?

ANY advice/tips are very welcome

December Ice Fishing Trip

Hey folks, I'm planning a trip to Edmonton in December to see Rush at Rogers Place. I was wondering what the ice fishing situation would be like in that second week of December 12/6 - 12/13). Is there a set season for ice fishing in AB or is it just whenever the thickness is good?

I've tried getting ahold of the Hunting and Fishing Branch and checked their website but haven't really gotten much guidance.

Fwiw, I'm looking at snagging a hut on Sylvan Lake 12/8 & 12/9. Do we think this might be too early? Cheers

Anyone living near Dickson? Wondering when the Red Deer River below Dickson Dam will clear up.

Hi everyone,

Is anyone here living near Dickson or fishing the Red Deer River below Dickson Dam regularly?

I drove out there yesterday, but the water was still very muddy. Since I live in Calgary, it's a fairly long trip, so I'd love to make sure the water has cleared up before making another drive.

If you've been there recently, I'd really appreciate an update on the water clarity and fishing conditions. Photos would be a huge bonus if you have any.

Thanks in advance!

Red Deer River float conditions

Going to be camping near Drumheller and hoping to do a float in my inflatable and do some fishing. I've floated the red deer previously alot but not past dry island. The flow rates look normal outside of Drumheller, but in town flow rate seems high? Anyone know the water conditions right now in that area?
