Local News Raleigh Police Department's private AI mass surveillance system tracks 1 million unique license plates each month and is searched by RPD nearly 50 times each day. There's almost no oversight despite growing concerns and enormous potential for abuse. RPD has declined to offer any transparency.

BEWARE! Huge amount of flies at the Food Lion off of Lake Wheeler and Tryon. Not only traps full of flies under many displays, but tons in the air, landing on food.

Flies are one of the most prolific spreaders of fecal pathogens, maybe make other shopping plans if you can

Context: the driver tried to enter my daughter's apartment without an appointment. Probably maintenance and a case of being at the wrong address but we'd like to follow up with the company to verify. Thanks.

UPDATE: Solved! Thanks to u/Ryder24 for the quick response. Y'all are great.

UPDATE 2: My daughter called the company and verified that the cleaning service workers were lost and couldn't find the right apartment. She's new to living alone and was a little worried. It's all good.

June 2025 bill: $220

Out-n-About Aer Lingus RDU-Dublin roundtrip flight tips

Post image
436 Upvotes

We just came back from a trip, thought I’d share some info in case anyone else is considering this route. We booked the tickets back in March, $650 per person is a bargain for summer time. We didn’t pay anything extra (it’s almost $40 per person to pick a seat). Our automatically assigned seats were in the front of the plane both ways. From RDU on Sunday, the plane was half empty (or half full :) ), we got seats together, on the way back (Tuesday) plane was almost full, we got seats in the same row but split.

The plane is small, it’s same size as you’d see on major domestic routes: 6 seats per row, 34 or so rows. Seat quality is also just average (in economy). I took a picture of the business class seats, they don’t look like much of an upgrade, tbh.

The plane is boarded from the back, starting with rows 30+, then 25+, etc. The restrooms for economy are all the way in the back. The ones in front are used by business class only.

Very hard to get any sleep on the outbound flight. There are only about 4 hours you’re left alone between the meal services and landing, their ambient light and screens are super bright. If you want to get any sleep, bring ear plugs and eye mask.

Note that when booking, you won’t see an option to order a special meal (e.g. vegetarian or kids meal). This needs to be done separately after booking but no less than 48 hours before the flight. There is a special form on their website to do that. They seem to have the same meal options on all flights: chicken or pasta (pasta is vegetarian). Flying from DUB back quality was a bit better. You get just one drink (soda, beer or wine), don’t recommend white wine - it’s served warm from a can and is not good. On flight from RDU, we got a warm breakfast wrap for second meal, going back just a cold cheese sandwich. Coffee was clearly instant. Also, since this flight is under 8 hours, no ice cream. :(

Some logistics tips in Dublin.

- For public transport, you need either coins or a card called Leap. The visitor cards can be ordered online in advance or purchased at the airport. Or you can buy a card for 5 EUR and load any amount on it. We found this option more economical since we didn’t ride that much. (Dublin is pretty small and transport routes aren’t super convenient to move between the typical tourist destinations, expect to walk a lot.) Regular cards are sold at any convenience store like Centra. On buses, you enter through the front door (there are no signs about it) and tap your card on the device somewhere near driver. On a tram (called Lua), you tap on the stop before boarding and then tap again when you get off. Oddly, you might need to hail a bus on the bus stop like you would a cab, otherwise they could just drive by.
- Regular buses from the airport take forever to get anywhere. There is an express bus that goes faster to the city center. Tickets are 9 EUR online or 10 at the bus stop. Taxi to our hotel was only 30 EUR, so with 3 of us it made more sense. You can use Uber, Bolt or Freenow by Lyft (separate app, regular Lyft doesn’t work). Bolt was cheapest. Airport signage is pretty good for all the transport options.
- On the way back, you can take 2 liters of liquid in carry-on in any container size. DUB operates similar to Toronto airport: you pass US security there and then just deplane like it’s a domestic flight in RDU. Get your duty free shopping done before you cross over.
- You don’t need any cash, tap/card payments are accepted everywhere. We had some euros from a previous trip and didn’t use any.

Question/Recommendation Việt food recommendations

Hi. Just moved here, feeling incredibly homesick from my family. Used to be spoiled by visits with homemade food.

What are your việt restaurant recommendations, I’m talking authentic like your aunt made you a homestyle meal. I’ll also take recommendations for Indian and Korean; my college roommates’ parents would always fatten us up when they visited.

Thanks.

Question/Recommendation Thrift stores for men

Upvotes

Looking for recommendations for thrift or consignment stores in Raleigh and surrounding areas that offer a decent selection for men. I'm a guy in my 30s who just wants to find some good everyday clothes, but the places I've gone seem to be limited to activewear that probably should've been tossed, XXL officewear button-downs, and your grandfather's closet clean-out. Thanks!

Concerts GNR 7/23 at CF Stadium

Anyone else have tickets to guns n roses tomorrow night? If so, how are you feeling about the weather and has anybody been able to locate if we're allowed to bring in stadium seats like we would be if we were at a game? I'm reading everything and don't see anything other than bag policies.

ETA: Well I'm stupid and now I see where we can bring in cushion seats as long as there's no pockets and no arms.

Question/Recommendation New here 👋 looking for local input

Hii - Moved here from Texas about a week ago to start graduate school in Raleigh this August. I LOVE everything about Raleigh. The greenery, the endless nature scene, quality food and restaurants, the friendliness and welcoming atmosphere! yall have such a special city here.

I have two quick questions!

  1. Where can I get a low-cost haircut? I just need a trim.
  2. How do yall manage the spiders?!? Are they harmless? Any DIY natural pest control tips?

Question/Recommendation Where to buy costume wigs

My niece is coming this weekend for GalaxyCon and she has not found a wig for her costume yet. Are there any places in Raleigh where we could possibly find a cheapish wig for her Rose Quartz from Steven Universe costume?

Concerts Traffic near Carter Finly tomorrow (7/23), guns n roses

Upvotes

I have a business meeting at 2 PM on corporate center drive, which is very near the stadium complex. It should end around three thirty.Does anybody think traffic will be heavily impacted that early due to the concert? I will be coming from chapel hill road on the Cary side

I do not need to be on.Edwards mill, I40, or wade avenue, so I am hopeful that I can avoid most of the mess

Question/Recommendation Trying to remember the name of a cafe in the Arringdon Morrisville area

Upvotes

Over a year ago I had an appointment in Morrisville, near the Duke Arringdon Medical building. After I grabbed a snack at a really cute cafe (or coffee bar) that was probably 5 minutes away and for the life of me can't remember the name and nothing seems like it when I search or look on Google maps.

It was in an apartment complex (but definitely not 1000 hills)

Location wise I know that the towns change pretty quickly over there.

Most notable was there was a hook where that regulars could leave their own mug.

Anyone know the name and if this place might still be there?

Here are a few of my shots from a few trips to the Dix Park sunflowers before most of them started drooping over in the heat. Believe it or not there were tons of people around when these were taken but I did my best to wait for the moment when nobody was in frame. These were edited from Google Pixel 10 pro raw files.

Any idea what is going there? I'm assuming some kind of multi family housing but wondering about the size. Address is 1426 Wake Forest Rd. I did a quick search on the county website and didn't see any permits.
