this megathread is for frequently asked questions re. general nail care, general nail concerns, and nail & salon service questions (aka posts that are only allowed on sunday should be posted here if it is not a sunday.) this will be a weekly thread that is pinned, available and accessible Monday thru Sunday. New megathreads will be created weekly. if your post is removed, you may be directed to post here.

FAQs include, but are not limited to:
★ questions re. general nail care and maintenance. for example "i want to start my nail care journey, where do i start" or "how should i trim/file my nails" or "how do i make my nails look better" or "i bite my nails, how do i care for them"

★ questions re. salon experiences. for example "i just got these done today, do they look bad" or "are my nails supposed to look like this after i leave the salon" or "should i get a fill?" or "am i being too picky?" or "would you go back"

★ questions re. salon services. for example "what is gel x" or "what is the difference between biab and acrylic" or "i want nails that look like this photo, what should i ask for?"

★ press-on application and removal questions, or press-on sizing questions, press on glue recommendations etc

★ questions that are NOT allowed - "was i overcharged", "how much should/would these cost" "should i get a refund" (these will be removed)

this megathread is for kind and courteous engagement, patience is required — if you don't have bandwidth for that, that's okay! these comments/this megathread is not for you.

  • 🚨‼️PLEASE BE ADVISED: if you are rude, condescending, and/or mean {incl. in tone] on posts made on sundays, you will receive an automatic 30-day mute. sunday's are being carved out for newbies to learn and learning here comes with patience.

this means:

  • if you found the picture on pinterest, instagram, tiktok - then the page you found the picture on should be tagged in the title or the username should be visible in the screenshot.
  • if you found the photo on google, etsy, amazon, etc. then the site/storefront should be visible in the screenshot.
  • bots, burner accounts, and karma farmers love to use stolen pictures and this helps us to keep those accounts off the sub.
  • please report posts that violate this rule

RULE 4: KEEP POSTS HIGH QUALITY [UPDATES & EXPANSION]

  1. Low quality photos will be removed
  2. Frequently asked questions & low quality posts will be removed.
  3. No trolling or spamming

this means:

  • Low quality photos = photos/videos too zoomed out, blurry/out of focus photos, low lighting, heavily filtered
  • Frequently asked questions are also questions that yield many results when using the subs search functions like "what is the best nail glue?", "hema free polish recommendations", "what tools/supplies do i need starting out
  • Low quality posts include, but are not limited to "looking for inspo/drop your inspo"
  • posts that will NOT be allowed ANY DAY -- "should i get a refund", "how much should i charge", "was i overcharged" and/or any price related posts are prohibited and will be removed. (why? there are to many variables and this varies from city to state, product to product, etc.)
  • see below, for a list of frequently asked questions that are allowed on SUNDAY's only; negative salon experience posts are reserved for sundays [see rule 15]
  • you know when you're trolling/spamming, we know when you're trolling/spamming. trolling and spamming = warning, mute, ban.
  • please report posts & comments that violate this rule

RULE 6: STAY ON TOPIC [REMINDERS]

  1. All posts must be related to nails (hands and feet)
  2. Any posts that could be used to show off other objects (faces/body parts, cars, children, pets, etc.) will be removed and you will likely receive a warning

this means:

  • your face/body/body parts should not be used as the background of your post, please see the feed for examples/confirmation if needed -- this includes, legs, bust, etc. in any capacity.
  • steering wheels are **NOT** allowed to be in the background of posts. too many posts of people taking pictures of their nails in moving vehicles. (so why not cropped? because we want to promote safety and safe habits and it would defeat the purpose if someone just cropped out the speedometer.)
  • will be lenient with pets [however, your nails should be the focus of this picture. your hand hurried in fur is going to get removed.]
  • good backgrounds are walls, tables, the sky -- anything but your face, body, bare legs or steering wheels.
  • please report posts & comments that violate this rule

  1. keep posts and comments SAFE FOR WORK. Anything sexual (including innuendo), graphic, or explicit will be removed, including posts depicting dangerous, risky or illicit activity will be removed and you may receive a warning, mute, or ban.
  2. this includes, but is not limited to: fetish content (discrete or not), sexual posts/comments, use of drugs/cigarettes/vapes, posts while operating a vehicle etc.

this means:

  • comments should always be SFW -- we have noticed that on sapphic nails posts especially that the comments tend to get sexually explicit and graphic, this is a violation of this rule. you should not use the comment section of any posts on this sub to provide sexual education or participate in graphic sexual conversations or depictions. this is a sub for nails.
  • if you see a creepy comment or an inappropriate conversation taking place in the comments PLEASE REPORT IT
  • please report posts & comments that violate this rule

RULE 9: NO DISTRIBUTING PERSONAL INFORMATION [REMINDERS]

  1. This applies to private information about yourself or others

this means:

  • no posts that ask for a nail tech in your city (why? safety, there are a lot of creeps on this reddit and we do not need anyone sharing places they frequent regularly or routinely)
  • instagram and tiktok links that have any information after the "?" in the link [comment if you need clarification on this]

₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊₊‧°𐐪♡𐑂°‧₊

this means:

  • if your photo is of any kind of graphic nail damage -- this includes, minor nail breaks, nail breaks, damaged nails (inflamed, swollen, moderately/severely bitten) MUST be marked *NSFW* (not to be confused with SPOILER) -- your post MUST be flair'd "Nail Care Help [Graphic Nail Damage]" or "[GRAPHIC NAIL DAMAGE]"
  • NO BLOOD -- if your graphic nail picture includes ANY blood, it will be removed and you will receive a warning.
  • please report posts that violate this rule

\*NEW RULES*\**

RULE 13: NSFW Profiles (Exemplary Expectations) \*NEW RULE*\**

  1. NSFW profiles will be held to a higher standard to maintain and ensure the safety of members and to continue our mission to keep this sub SFW.

this means:

  • NSFW profiles CANNOT post anything requesting low quality, general engagement, for example "do you like this color?", "what do you think?", "what color should i get next" -- posts that ask for help regarding nail application, specific nail help are allowed.
  • NSFW profiles found to be discretely engaging with other NSFW profiles will be banned.
  • pedicure posts from NSFW profiles must be both feet on the ground, up to the ankle
  • the NSFW content rule applies to explicit/NSFW usernames/profile pictures -- these accounts will be muted.

  • please report comments that violate this rule

꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚˚₊‧꒰ა ☆ ໒꒱

RULE 15: SUNDAY Q-DAY \*NEW RULE** - based on community feedback -* sunday's are now reserved for nail care & salon experience question day (dubbed "Sunday Q-day"). sunday's will be the day designated for posts that include frequently asked questions that vary by individual/experience. this is aimed to keep the feed high quality while still making space for people who are in various states of learning.

  • if you do not have the bandwidth to be patient and kind when explaining/engaging with posts made on sundays, we are going to kindly ask that you sit this one out. learning on this sub should be met with patience and kindness -- please keep in mind that some people come to this sub because this is the only place they can chat nails and others are having their first salon experiences. there is space for that here.
  • "why didn't you speak up?" = not okay; "next time you should speak up when you notice xyz"= okay. // "posts like this annoy me" , "i am so tired of ya'll coming to complain on the internet." = not okay & will be removed with potential warning.

this means:

  1. Sunday begins at 12AM (US-Eastern Standard Time and ends at 11:59PM (US-Pacific Standard Time) -- you can engage with your post into perpetuity, it just needs to be posted on sunday only. -- "Normal" posts are allowed on sundays

Discussion/Question How can I make press ons look just a little better?

Very very new at using press ons (this is my second set ever after the first popped off after three days) and I’m hoping to get them looking a little less “fake” if I can.

I’m using the kiss brush on nail glue, but it feels like even if I do a thin layer it comes out through the sides.

I’d also love any tips to make the area where the press on is closest to the cuticle (not sure what this is called, sorry!) look a little better and less like a harsh plastic line.

Discussion/Question Is it bad…

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I got a poly gel manicure with extensions yesterday. It’s the first time I’ve gotten my nails done as an adult, so I have nothing to compare it to, but they look off to me. I know I have short nail beds and you can only do so much with that but… idk. Am I being picky? It was like $80 after tip, and the salon has 5 star reviews across the board so I’m a little upset my nails don’t look like the rest of the pictures from the reviews.

If they are bad, can you tell me what is wrong about them so I can articulate to the salon why I want to get them redone? I’m really nervous about going back

Hi! It’s my 1’st time posting my nails here, I’ve been lurking and liking in the shadows for quite some time.

Finally feeling brave enough to post - these are my natural nails with builder gel (my pinky nail on the right hand broke right before I had time to do my nails 🙄) I didn’t have the energy to do nail art but kinda regretting that now, as I feel like this Milky White look is a lil boring.. 🥲

Discussion/Question Nail salon prices

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

About 2 weeks ago, I got this cat eye gel manicure done at my local nail salon that I’ve been going to for years. After selecting the color I wanted, my manicurist told me that the cat eye colors would cost $70. I was going to pick a different color, but my mom said to just get it, because she took me to get my nails done as an early birthday treat (bless her heart).
Within 1 day of getting my nails done they already begun chipping, I haven’t even had this set for 2 full weeks yet and it’s already peeling away.
$70 for a full set of acrylics would make sense, but for the price paid for a gel set and then having it chip so fast was disappointing :,( it got me realizing that every time I’ve gone to the nail salon recently, I feel as though I’m paying an arm and a leg and my nails never really last anymore. I got a gel pedicure as well and I tipped both the manicurist and pedicurist well in cash.
I got a cat eye set done 2 years ago at a different salon, before the cat eye design became a trend, and it did not cost this much so I really feel like nail salons are inflating their service prices, then expecting a solid cash tip afterwards too
