Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!
  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types
  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)
  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question
  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Discussion Im convinced that pdrn is being pushed so hard because its a cheap animal agriculture waste product... [Misc]

Like why are all the skincare creators just promoting salmon sperm, a basic hydrating product, when we have better products for that. Its nothing special but its being pushed like a miracle ingredient lol. Manufactured hype for sure and just dont fall for it!! Animal ag love it when they can make more profits, Just like the beef tallow when thats just a pore clogging moisturizer 🤷

They most likely buy big vats of the stuff for cheap and making an insane profit margin from selling it at the price it is.

Acne [Acne] Help plz!! Blood filled pimple not healing Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

Hi I had a cystic/hormonal pimple (hard bump under the surface of the skin) around 1 week ago, that's become a very bloody pimple and I dont know how to heal it because it's not forming a scab properly.

When I noticed the pimple, I put the Paula's choice salicylic acid on it with a cotton swab and put a pimple patch on it. It got the gunk/pus out of the pimple, and it the skin was flattened and red when I removed the patch. I washed my face, and put another pimple patch with tea tree and hylaronic acid in it to heal the spot.

(Note: I've done this multiple times before and it was my way of getting rid of pimples quickly with minimal textural scarring, just pigmentation that would go away after azaleic acid, cicaplast baume and mederma use for a few weeks. Not advice, just wanted to say this has never happened before.)

But when I removed the patch it was now a bit bloody, so I cleaned my face (gentle cleanser, then Hypochlorus acid spray) and put another pimple patch (not the tea tree one, but the og basic one) on. The next time I removed it there was a lot of "pus/gunk" in the pimple patch and a large bleeding hole. I put the tea tree pimple patches for the following 2 days (1 each day during work, after work I removed them and only put them on before work). The pimple hole is still bleeding and looks like it was getting bigger/deeper?

I didn't wear a pimple patch from last night to right now, I was covering it with aquaphor and vaseline (vaseline didnt work at night so I tried aquaphor in the morning). I washed my face very gently 4 times between last night and tonight and every time the pimple becomes bloody again (scab is washing away idk??). Most recently, tonight I just used a cotton swab and water to wash the area because the blood dried around a larger area from the pimple and then the entire thing became bloody again, I didn't even touch the middle of the pimple, I swabbed over it by accident because the dried blood was larger than the pimple.

What do I do now?

I've never had such a bloody pimple before and it's luckily seems shallower now, but I dont know how to help it heal other than not washing my face? Also the surrounding skin is very dry to touch even when it was coated in aquaphor/vaseline.

I attached pictures of the pimple after work yesterday (wearing makeup) and today around 24 hours later (tried to get similar lighting and resolution but irl the 2nd one looks worse than the picture and is still raw/bleeding).

Any help is appreciated!!

Routine Help [Routine Help] Large dark spots on my nose - blackheads or sebaceous filaments? What can I do? Spoiler

Post image
28 Upvotes

Okay, I've been taking care of my skin for a while now. Ive always had a problem with sebaceous filaments, and I've been using L300 (contains salicylic acid) and adapalene.

My routine:

-Cleanser: Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil

-Moisturizer: Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream

-Serum: Vitamin C serum

-Sunscreen: La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Oil Control Fluid SPF 50+

I've been taking isotretinoin (Accutane) for a little over 5 weeks now. Because of the dryness, Ive had to cut back on the Anua cleansing oil and stop using my Vitamin C serum for now. Instead, I use CereVe Hydrating Cleanser most of the time (though I still use a small amount of the Anua oil on my nose because it helps), and during the day I apply Propylenglykol Evolan as an extra moisturizer since isotretinoin has made my skin very dry.

It's honestly a bit frustrating because my skincare routine was finally starting to make progress, and then I had to simplify everything because of isotretinoin. I'm hoping it's just temporary while the medication does its job.

My question is: What can I do about the large black spots on my nose? I know they aren't regular blackheads because when Ive removed the top before, it's just red underneath. It's almost like they have a thin brown "lid" on top. What are they, and what should I do to reduce or remove them?

(I have been doing this rutien for around 3 months+) but i have done other skincare for around 6 months

(min skin is naturly oily)

Anti Aging [Anti-aging] Almost 30 years old, skin looks much older, not sure what am I doing wrong Spoiler

Post image
83 Upvotes

I have added a photo of how my skin looks most of the time.

My morning routine: wash with cleanser, tonic, vitamin c, moisturizer, spf.

My evening routine: wash with cleanser, tonic moisturizer.

Other products I have tried: retinol (stopped because of pregnancy and breastfeeding), niacinamide, salycilic, caffeine under eyes, chemical peeling.

Biggest issues: dullness, huge pores, lines on forehead, around mouth and eyes, dark circles around eyes. I feel like my skin is not tight enough, like there is excess skin.

I have been using spf daily for over 6 years. I drink enough water, I exercise and eat as healthy as possible. My bloodwork and hormones are ok. I slept 7-8 hours per night when this photo was taken (I'm 3 months postpartum now so I sleep less).

My skin has been like this for at least 3-4 years now.

I have a dermatologist appointment in december (I'm in Europe and the waiting lines are insane).

Any advice I can apply till then?

Routine Help [Routine Help] What in my skincare routine could be causing my milia?

Upvotes

Hi guys, I just wanted to share my skin care routine as I’ve noticed two new milia in the past few months and want to prevent getting more. There’s one milia on my cheek and I noticed another one today on my forehead. I’ve had milia before but only around the eyes (and some of that is still there).

So for my skin care routine, I’m honestly not too consistent but have been making more of an effort the past few months as I would wash my face once in a blue moon before this. Now I wash a couple times a week on average. I use the body shop tee tree oil face wash, apply the niacinamide/zinc serum from the ordinary, then the body shop vitamin E mosturizing cream. As a final step I’ll put on cliniques eye cream on my underbags. Sometimes I’ll put on the laneige waterbank sleep mask overnight if I feel like my skin is getting dry. I also rarely use sunscreen on my face but when I do it’s the supergoop daily screen cream (moisturizer+ sunscreen in one) or put on my regular vitamin e cream then the supergoop unseen sunscreen.

I used to use the laneige waterbank mask but then I ran out. When I was younger I used the body shops vitamin e cream and don’t remember having any problems so that’s why I bought it again instead of a refill on the laneige but now I’m wonder if that cream may be too thick and causing my milia. Or maybe the sunscreen? Yet I’ve genuinely put sunscreen on maybe like 3 times the entire summer so idk if it’s that. I also only really do my skincare at night so once a day other than some weekends when I have more time in the day to take care of myself.

Acne [Acne] Years of bacne gone after medication change

I've had awful bacne for a few years. Inflamed, open wounds, heavy scarring, awful itching, etc.

You get the idea.

I've tried so many skin care routines over this time to try managing it but nothing seemed to work. I had a sneaking suspicion that it might be related to an allergin to either SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulphate) or latex. I checked all cleaning products ingredients, sought out products free of latex and SLS, and thoroughly cleaned anything that may be a problem. Nothing changed.

Until recently.

Something led me down a rabbit hole related to medication I've been on and sure enough SLS was listed as a non-medical ingredient for that particular manufacturer. I was stunned. What's a surfactant doing in medicine?! So I checked out other manufacturers and probably 3/4 of them for that medication had SLS. It was also in a lot of OTC medicine.

Had the pharmacy switch manufacturers for me and order in new pills. (New Rx required)

I figured there was no harm but I might see some positive change in a few weeks or months. The internet firmly said SLS was an exclusively external reaction so I wasn't too hopeful.

Within days the inflammation started to go down, redness disappeared and lingering bacne wounds started to heal.

I've kept my skin care routine the same throughout the past few months and haven't changed it. It will probably stay the same.

(An added bonus is my whole body feels less sore overall)

It's worth checking your medication (and other unexpected possible sources) for ingredients you may be sensitive to.

Product Question Which toners would be good to moisturize my scalp? [Product Question]

Upvotes

Just like my skin, I think my scalp has been feeling dehydrated yet oily. I've been having to wash my hair every night because it becomes oily within less than 24 hours. However it also feels dry and itchy sometimes??

So I thought I needed to moisturize it and I think toner would be perfect since theyre can be moisturizing without being too heavy and greasy on my hair. Which toners would be suitable to use on my scalp? Right now I have the I'm From Rice Toner, Numbuzin Pure Full Calming Herb Toner, and the Skin1004 Centella Ampoule.

Product Question What can I use to reduce these dots? [Product request] Spoiler

I’m guessing they’re clogged pores(?) but nothing I do helps. They’re much darker and more obvious in person than on the camera, I wish they looked this faint irl! I’ve had them for years and years. I see girls with beautifully “clear” noses and I get very envious. It ages me and no amount of exfoliators work :( I currently only use salicylic acid, retinol (not the same days) and obviously cleanser and moisturizers.

Thanks :(

Acne [acne] what are your holy grail items for hyperpigmentation and acne?

Upvotes

I moved to another state a year ago & shortly after realized I was starting to get pretty bad acne. Shortly after I also started to get pretty bad hyperpigmentation.

I added a filter to my shower, hasn’t seemed to help much.
I wear sunscreen almost daily but have only recently started reapplying a lot since I’m outside a lot on long walks.
I recently went to the dermatologist and they said they’d prescribe me cabtreo but it hasn’t been approved by insurance so trying to see if I can get an alternative.

I saw a few people raving about the Laroche Posay Effaclar so I bought it yesterday and my face already feels so dry.

I saw that vitamin c is also extremely helpful but haven’t looked for one yet.

What products do you recommend overall for acne and hyperpigmentation?

Product Question [Product Question] Gritty azaleic gel

Hello everyone! I just started using the Finacea 15% w/w azaleic acid gel, and it’s super weird. First of all it’s super gritty (feels like I’m rubbing salt flakes on my face). I apply it when my face is dry, yet it’s still SOOOO itchy even after applying moisturizer. (I also have a micro scratch on my face now and it BURNS)

- Is it normal for the gel to be gritty, or should I return it to the pharmacy?

-Is there anything I could do to stop the itchiness or do I just keep up with it until I’m more used to it ?

Thank you 🫶

Selfie/B&A [Acne] Could this be acne/dryness or something else? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

About a month ago I got a small whitehead in the bottom corner of my mouth. It seemed to go away but left a lot of redness. Ever since then I have a perpetually red spot that will occasionally pop up two separate whiteheads. They will go away but the redness and swelling will stay before yet another one or two whiteheads pops up. I’m not sure if benzoyl peroxide has dried/irritated the area or if it is something else. Does anyone have experience with something like this?

Routine:

AM:

Stratia Velvet Cleansing Milk
Hada Labo Premium Toner
Stratia Interface mixed with Stratia Lipid Gold
—Stratia oil occasionally—
Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV Essence

PM:

BOJ Cleansing Balm
Haruharu Black Rice Gel Cleanser
Hada Labo Premium Toner
Dr. Ceuracle Vegan Kombucha Essence
Stratia Lipid Gold
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream
0.05% Tretinoin cream

Product Request Best gel moisturizer and sunscreen on accutane? [Product Request]

Hi! I've recently started accutane and anticipate that my skin will be very dry and flaky. I've always had oily skin so I've always used light moisturizers and emulsions instead of cream moisturizers. However I don't really like how thick cream moisturizers feel on my face so I'm looking for a good gel moisturizer. Preferably one that layers well underneath sunscreen and makeup. Currently looking at Aveeno calm + oat gel moisturizer or Neutrogena hydro boost water gel. My budget is around $20 but I don't mind going a little above that.

I've always bought sunscreens with a more matte finish and I'm not sure if I should invest in a thicker one since I'll be wearing moisturizer underneath anyway, but any sunscreen recommendations are also appreciated! Thank you!

Product Request [Product Request] Japanese beauty (especially collagen mask) recommendations?

Hi there! I'm going to Japan in October, and I'm planning to bring an extra suitcase just for souvenirs and beauty finds.

I have combination skin - my T-zone gets oily fast, but I also have some dry patches. I'm 31, so I'm also focusing on maintaining skin elasticity and preventing early signs of aging. Right now, my routine is mostly Korean skincare: CosRX Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, The 6 Peptide Skin Booster, and The Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizer (occasionally Oil-Free Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion instead). I'm also reintroducing The Ordinary's 2% Granactive Retinoid into my nighttime routine.

My holy grail is the Sungboon Editor Deep Collagen Mask. My skin looks and feels so good after using it. I was planning to stock up while I was in Japan since I'm running low, but it looks like the prices are about the same as what I can get in the U.S., so it doesn't seem worth using up valuable luggage space.

So my question is this: Is there a Japanese equivalent to those collagen overnight gel masks that you'd recommend? And more generally, what J-Beauty products are worth bringing home - either for me or as souvenirs for friends and family?

TIA!!!

Acne Forehead [Acne] Spoiler

Post image
Upvotes

I’m 17M and have basically acne solely on my forehead region for 3 years. I’m pretty sure I have sensitive combo skin oily on forehead and dry on cheeks

I sweat alot also (maybe mild hyperhidrosis)
and have flaky skin after cleansing

I’ve been using avveno calm and restore moisturiser, cerave hydrating cleanser, la Roche oil control sunscreen and sacliylic acid (once every 3 days), but I keep getting whiteheads, acne on my forehead( rarely anywhere else on my face). it’s texture is uneven and rough as-well. My forehead gets quite itchy at times especially at the red regions that appear sometimes.

I’m wondering if my cleanser is too strong, it’s a moisturiser thing or I should cleanse after sweating midday ish.

I’ve also been recommend oil cleansers, is that something I should look into

Please help my shit chopped😭✌️

Anti Aging [Anti Aging] Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

TLDR: please suggest a wash, moisturizer , and daily spf that hopefully won’t sting my eyes, and will protect well against UVA. Bonus points for a SPF to use at the lake/running. I have dry eye disease and so it’s also really important that none of these products are harsh on the eyes/meibomian glands, and I also believe I have seb derm so ideally it’s compatible with not making that any worse. Big flakes in my beard and sometimes next to my nose becomes raw and scaly.

I’m looking to take good care of my skin. I’m going through a lot of mental health troubles right now, making it harder than ever to decide what to buy. Some say cerave is good, others say you should have dedicated spf, others say you actually need a European brand for UVA protection (???? Have I been aging my skin like crazy using US products my whole life??)

I’m 31m and I believe I have EDS(hyper-mobility) and my eye skin is super sunken and purple. I have seb derm I believe which makes me feel like I don’t know what products to buy. I don’t know my skin type, my nose seems oily but the rest of my skin doesn’t really.

Anyway I’m feeling overwhelmed. I started doing research and apparently, spf+ moisturizer isn’t great? I have been using cerave moisturizer+spf for my face. I want something that’s really good at preventing aging, and won’t mess with my sensitive skin, and won’t cause problems with seb derm.

I am looking to see a dermatologist for the skin condition but I’ve already been to one and they were useless and next appt is months away.

I’m also unsure if my vanicream gentle cleanser is good? I guess I’m just second guessing everything. I typically use nizoral on my face OR cerave SA renewing cleanser a few times a week and the rest of the time I use the vanicream.

I ALSO need something (if the daily spf isn’t the best fit for this) that will be water and sweat resistant , I spend a lot of time running and at the lake.

And finally, if I’m using dedicated SPF, idk what to do to moisturize/hydrate my skin. I don’t know how to tell what I need. I don’t really know if my skin is hydrated or whatever.

Anyway. Any help is appreciated .

Routine Help [Routine help] How do I heal and prevent these breakouts? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I’m 20F and have been following a very basic skincare routine for the past year — cleanser, toner, moisturiser (with occasional vitamin C at night) which has generally given me clear skin.

However in the past two months, I’ve suddenly started breaking out a lot around my upper lip and lower cheek area. To make things worse, I’ve also just permanently moved from a hot and humid country to a cold and dry climate this week.

How should I consider altering my routine?

Acne [Acne] No reduction after 3 months of treatment

I have medium-severity facial acne and have been treating it with .1% adapalene and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gels for the past 3 months. My skin became noticeably drier but the acne didn’t reduce at all. What should i try now? I finally want to get rid of this once and for all, I’m tired of the constant battle.
