FB Marketplace

Is FB Marketplace the best place to find 1st gen 4runners?

My 16 year old son is looking for his first truck. He has fallen for 1st gen 4runners. He is spending his own cash, with an initial budget of $8k but with a bit of room to stretch. We are in rural NE California and have been looking at FB marketplace.

We are not completely new to Toyotas. My 18 year old drives an 85 yota pu and I am working on a 69 fj40 frame-off restomod. Both of those are within the past few years though.

He is also looking at 2nd gens, as the cost is about half. We will see what he comes up with.

I glanced at Craigslist, but mostly trash ads. I looked on MUD as well, but not much there.

Anywhere else I need to be helping my boy search?

Any advice or criticism welcome as well.

'86 22-RE engine failure pre-diagnosis

Before i go digging into the bottom end i wanna see your predictions. In the time leading up to engine failure i've had a smoothe running engine. No evidence of knock anywhere through the normal operating range. Sudden knock appeared at 3k rpm on highway going 65, then uncle rodney came knocking. Bearing is probably spun, engine is now locked. Oil pressure read normal as well as coolant temps, all sensors recently tested. Engine is sitting at 160k miles. Timimg, guides, oil, and water pump all have 10k on them. What do you think is the most probable cause for the crankshaft bearing failure?

I've had the previous gen pickup grill on for about 10 years (pic 2) and figured it was time for a change. Put the old raptor coated black grill back on with some clear corners.

Also finished installing the front bushes I started about 5 months ago...it's nice to be back driving this thing. The 2L started first turn of the key as always.

Need Advice Disc brake conversion?

Just picked my '86 up a few days ago so Im new to 4runners. Brakes are awful on this thing and leaking from that load sensing valve-proportioning valve line at the rear. Ive seen the LCE rear disc conversion kit but i dont want to have to get new wheels if i can avoid it. I like my OEM look. Which sites are we shopping for performance parts?

Steering issue?

I have a stock IFS on my 1988. Put new rotors, pads, and calipers on the front, thinking my brakes from last year was screwing up for some reason. Done wheel bearings a year ago with still no noise, play, or signs of them bad. But when driving down the road, I'm getting very aggressive jerks to the left in my wheel, and it feels like my driver side is locking up for a reason I'm still trying to solve. It's not completely locking up, but feels like a grab and release, as if someone was jabbing on the brake pedal. But this is under normal acceleration and cruising, I've experienced it happening between 35-70mph. (1st time it happened was at 70mph, thought I fixed it so went for test drive and that's when it happened again at 35-40mph.) Has anyone experienced this before, or have any idea what else to inspect? I would put it on the shops lift and pull it apart further, but it's currently holding my wife's Lexus at the moment for a transfer case. Thanks in advance for any leads

Need info on U Joints

I am going to replace all the U Joints in my 1987 4Runner. I plan on buying DANA Spicer 5-1510x U Joints. It does not have any lift kits or suspension modifications other than replacing the original shocks and leaf springs with bilstein shocks and dayton leaf springs. Im not sure if it matters but it does have IFS.

My question is, does the double cardan joint use the same U Joints as the other three? And does the grease fitting location matter? On the originals it is a 45° fitting in the center of the joint and the dana spicers have it on the end cap

Selling my 4 runner what’s a fair price?

Hey guys! It’s time to let go of my runner 89 DLX. Rebuilt engine with 50k miles on it, rebuilt manual trans, clutch has 20k on it. Arb rear diff locker and arb compressor, 4.88 gears. Small dent in the hood and the Interior is a bit rough cracked dash but everything works. I’m just not sure what a fair price would be. What should I ask for it?

Need some help diagnosing my 1986 4Runner Turbo (22R-TE)

I recently picked up this 4Runner and I’m trying to track down an issue. The truck runs and drives, but when it’s fully warmed up it will sometimes shut off while idling.
I’ve noticed it happens when it’s sitting at idle, and especially when I put it in reverse and let it sit. The RPMs drop and it eventually dies.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? I’m wondering if it could be an idle adjustment issue, vacuum leak, IAC/ISC problem, fuel issue, or something else I should check first.

Any advice on where to start troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everybody! I just purchased my first 4Runner yesterday (1986) and I’m stoked to start working on it. I’m curious as to if I’m missing any mounts for the front bumper or if I should be able to install one as is? Any help is heatedly appreciated thank you.

Looks like it’s the electrical attachment to a trailer (verbiage?!)
Can I just clip it out without any issues? Thank you

Digital dash project

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This has been taking me far too long to work on... I'm running a megasquirt ECU, and decided to build a digital dash to go with it. I started on this year's ago and have had a few different screens, but kept getting hung up on mounting and fitting in a way I was happy with.

Ended up switching to a screen that didn't fill the entire width, and made printed end brackets that worked great. I still need to figure out how to mount all the other boards on the back, and wire management.

And I finally wired up an octocoupler to bench test a turn signal last night, a bit of head scratching, then I finally just followed the directions and it worked 😂

Going to add a high beam indicator and 4wd as well.

Also was able to bench test a spare fuel sensor to mostly figure out how I need to wire that in, to get the ECU to work with it.

Help deciding how in depth of rebuild I’m in

I was driving to work the other day and my coolant belt snapped I didn’t catch it as quickly as I would liked I ended up grabbing a belt from work and installing it and drove home, but I drove a couple more days felt severe lack of power now it has this sound and dies when I rev it high it’s odd only the knock like sound happens when it’s throttled hard I replaced the crank bearings when I built the engine like five years ago I’m really hoping I don’t have to pull the whole engine. I have a spare head. Do you guys think it would be worth it just to replace the head gasket and see or pull whole engine to check rod bearings

Thoughts on the new Slate EV truck?

Here's an article from The Verge and here's a YouTube Test Drive.

i recognize that there are some amazing things happening with EV's in Asia, and that in North America we don't get access to some of those vehicles.

I also recognize that we are an Internal Combustion Engine club and many might not be fans of EV's in general.

however, i personally am excited about the idea of a BASE EV that users can modify at their discretion, with the bare bones of a 1st gen 4runner in EV form. i WISH Toyota would bring back the 1st Gen in EV form. I really think people would buy in.
