Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Heads up about link posting

Just wanna give a heads up since mod queue is showing a ton of posts that get removed lately by reddit, so I just wanted to give a heads up as to why that is.

Using shortened links, regardless of the shortening service (tinyurl, website built in short links like amazons a.co links) are auto-removed by reddit themselves. There's nothing we can do to disable this auto removal.

If you notice your comment reply or post isn't appearing, this is why.

Is this a good deal for $18,000?

I’m looking to buy my first truck off my neighbor, It only has 45k miles and runs good, it looks a little rough but nothing a good wash and wax can’t fix. My neighbor says it’s a rare truck and that’s why he wants $18,000 or trade for my 2003 Porsche 911. Do you think I should pull the trigger?

1997 2.3 auto towing ability?

Post image
22 Upvotes

For reference, looking for a small sized pickup, mainly to get me to work that won’t break the bank on gas, but that can also be able to haul my 16’ aluminum fishing boat and trailer comfortably on the weekends. I also have a little 500cc ATV I’d like to tow. I’ve found this 2.3 auto from 97’ with 240,000 kms.

1) Will the 2.3 struggle with the towing?

2) I’m not looking for a 4.0 currently as they’re overpriced in my area and poor on gas, but would a 3.0 be a better option?

From the looks of it it's the second gen ranger before the face lift, but I could be wrong as I know more about the first gen rangers

98 2.5 2WD, has had lots of vibration from 5th gear but never popped out. Went to change fluid and not a whole lot came out. Went to lower truck and ATF was pouring out the back of transmission. Ordered output shaft seal but after pulling drive shaft here’s what I found. (It ran wayyy smoother during short test drive after filling with atf but on highway there’s an append zone of angry vibration). I’m worried about the metal wear inside transmission hole where the shaft goes. I’m guessing I’d have to drop tranny to change that part that’s chipped up. Thanks!!

I have been fixing up an old 91 ranger I bought a few months ago and decided to do something a little custom. The old handles were broke and the foam was rotten. So I cut some new ones out with oak I had, they are finished with Rubio monocoat. Very happy with how they came out!

Ford Ranger Stories

(Specially only 1-3rd gen no hate)

I really want a reliable clean ranger that I know I can get 10+ years, even 4-6 out of. I have a beautiful shitbox+rustbucket right now that tries her best and gets the job done but i probably only have a year left with her if unless she decides she needs another 2000$ repair.

Just curious of how you allll you found your rangers, how much time you’ve had em and how much longer you’ll get out of them. I’m sure we all know the ranger market is out of control but the area i live in is especially bad for em. Just wanna hear real experiences and knowledge from everyone; was it hand me down, marketplace, restoration, dealer, etc. And how’s it running today vs when u purchased.

Well guys, its been good. Got into an accident on the way to work this morning. Lady failed to yield in a parking lot and gunned it into my passenger side.

Im not at fault but I'm not sure what insurance will do because I only have liability. She also filed a police report because she insists I was at fault, which I know I'm not.

Gonna try and get in a new (to me) ranger if insurance wants to total this out. My door is caved and so is the side of the cab. Luckily this was just a beater daily so no real loss.

Electric noise when engine is off

I just test drove a 2019 ford ranger Wildtrak 2.0L

Everything was good but when the engine was turned off there was this electronic resetting nous like a relay clicking and a servomotor moving going in loops. Wouldn't stop for 2min, then gets on again as soon as I press either open or close key button.

I can hear it from the can and it comes from being the pedals/central console.

What is it? Should I be concerned?

I liked the car but am a bit put off by that.

Every Cab + Bed Design That Exists and I Wish Existed. I'm really eyeing that 6ft Crew Cab I wish those were real! Also, this was made in Photoshop just for fun. The color-matched ones are AI because I couldn't figure out how to change the colors in Photoshop myself. I didn't want to just generate them I wanted to make them. Anyway, let me know what y'all think!

No speedo/odo, harsh shifts, no o/d. Is my gem module bad?

Hello, i just picked up a 98 b2500 rear wheel abs model with the 4r44e and have noticed that it does not have overdrive, or any speedometer function. I tried a new standard manufacturing vss sensor and found it shifting hard and popping into neutral past 45. Swapping in the old sensor got me back to baseline. So far i tested the wires for continuity by looping the axle connector and resistance testing the under hood test plug - 2 ohms, we're good there. The abs tone ring still is in okay shape. Both the speedo and odo are out so it cant be both motors at once. This truck's wiring all looks great. Is my gem module bad? I have crank windows and manual door locks so all I really have to test it is my wipers. Wipers work, im not sure how to run the wiper fluid dispenser but its probably good. The original owners used it as a delivery truck so it had some sort of long range radio in it at some point, some of that wiring is still milling about though it looks professionally done. Otherwise all fuses are in good spirits and all connectors have gotten a cleaning with electrical parts cleaner. I should also note there are no codes coming up.

Buying Advise

i’m going to look at a 2020 Ranger

trim: Lariat
drivetrain: 4x4
color: silver exterior, black leather interior
led headlights,
NO BEDLINER,
interior is 9/10

It will be $25000 out the door, including EVERYTHING (tax, etc)

it was $25540 out the door, he has offered $25000 without me discussing price, and i was probably gonna try to bring price down to 24500. it’s been on sale for 30 days, so i’m afraid people are obviously avoiding it for a reason

is this a good deal? I think it’s a pretty good deal but it’s a little out of my budget. was trying to stay around 22k for a used midsize truck, but this would be my go to model and trim for any of the midsize trucks

Questions on oil pan replacement

So I have a 2009 ranger with the 4.0 V6. Originally I had a drain plug strip the pan threads and now a non working piggy back plug is the temporary fix. I need to change the lower pan and gasket so I can have a working drain plug, but I’ve never done this on a Ranger. It looks like it comes off without anything in the way, is it just as easy as taking the bolts off, cleaning area and installing the new pan and gasket? Just wondering if there’s anything not immediately apparent that I need to do or be aware of.

Tow hitch maximum weight.

I have an '07 Supercab with a 4.0 and I just bought a 390 lb motorcycle and was wondering about using a hitch carrier. Is it feasible? I have no place to keep a trailer.

2000 ranger speaker upgrade

Hey I’m looking to upgrade the speakers in my 2000 ranger. I was looking at the Kicker 46CSC684 on crutch field.

Would these be as simple as plug and play or do I need to do any wiring or get a different head unit?

Also are there speakers behind the seats that can be upgraded or is it just the 2 door speakers?

What are some things you would want 3D printable replacement/upgrades for?

I recently got a new 3D printer and have started learning CAD so I can make some replacement things. My current project is a new center console with a bit more storage and better cupholders, then next I plan on making a better flush mount bracket for my aftermarket radio. With that being said, is there anything y'all have wanted or wished there was a file for? I'm looking for more things to work on that I can either use in my ranger or just use as 3d modeling practice that maybe someone else can make use of

Edit: I appreciate all of your ideas/requests, I will do my best to get things together but it will take me some time because I am still newer to modeling things and I don't have immediate access to all things Ranger(ie the console around a shift nob, or gen 1/2 Rangers). But if anyone is able or willing to send me pictures and measurements of gen 1 or 2 items, shifter console and stuff, or anything niche, it'd be a huge help. But most importantly, thank you all for your responses and interest!
