Opinion The hate and backlash towards Argentina has been blown way out of proportion.
The reaction to Argentina is a complete joke, this social media smear campaign is ridiculous. Did they gross the line with the brawls post match, of course, hell Paredes deserves at least a 10 match ban for the shot to the throat of the Spanish player. But this anti-Argentine rhetoric has gone too far. It started weeks ago with every time they win it being a conspiracy that it was fixed for them to win. It has spilled over to a xenophobic agenda against Argentina where now all of sudden they are the most racist people in the world. Which is just false, disgusting having people like Samuel L Jackson posting if you're black you can't support Argentina, now we have USA politicians saying Argentina lost support because of a racist history. This is the same Argentina that abolished slavery over a decade before the United States, this is the same Argentina that had its first black leader all the way back in 1826. This is the same Argentina who’s symbolic mother of their nation is a black woman, this is the same Argentina that features black figures on their currency, does the United States, Mexico, Britain or Spain have any black figures on their currency, of course not. This is the same Argentina that since the constitution of 1853 said all people were equal without judgment of race. This is the Argentina that never had institutional and state mandated segregation based on race. Were there cases of racist Argentina fans at this world cup, of course, just as there were cases for racist fans of other nations. The audacity of some who act like their countries aren't just as bad if not worse to racism is a joke. Ask any soccer player of color about experiences playing in Europe. How many bananas have been thrown by Spanish fans at players like Dani Alves and Vini Jr. Look at how Rashford, Sancho and Saka were treated in England after missing the penalties in the Euro final with the racist shit they had to deal with from their own countrymen. Ask Mario Balotelli what it was like playing as a black Italian man in Italy. Look at how many monkey chants are STILL targeted at players of color in Europe. This is not at all to defend any of the racist sack of shit Argentine fans, but to pick and choose 2 or 3 cases as reason to label a country over 40 million as all racist is simply idiotic. Another ridiculous thing from the final was having Javier Bardem say Spain were Palestine and Argentina were Israel. That has nothing to do with the world cup final but if he wants to bring it, let's examine it. Argentina recognized Palestine as an official state in 2010, it took Spain till 2024 to do so. The last time Spain was scheduled to play Israel was 2017, and they went through with it and played the match. Argentina cancelled their match with Israel in 2018 in support of Palestine, and they were thanked by Palestine for that. It’s a joke for Javier Bardem and others to accuse Argentina of being this symbol colonialism when Spain, Britain, Belgium, Italy and the French were the worst colonizers responsible for taking other land all over the world, look at what Europe did with the rape of Africa alone. These are the same European nations along with the United States that had zoos in the 20th century where black men and women were caged and shown off as animals. This whole thing is a farce against Argentina because they were good at a sport and because their stupid president has aligned himself with people like Trump, Musk and Netanyahu. This being the same Argentine president Messi and the national team have spoken out against numerous times.
