[Question] How to make the pixels sharper in the BlueMSX emulator?

Post image
Upvotes

I recently downloaded the BlueMSX emulator and wanted to run it in full-screen mode. I’m not interested in image filters or anything like that—I like the pixelated look—but I don't know how to achieve that in this emulator. I set the emulation and monitor options to "None" and increased the full-screen resolution to 1400x1050 (a higher resolution that maintains the 4:3 aspect ratio), but it still doesn't look the way I want. It seems like there’s some kind of bilinear filtering going on; how do I turn that off? There’s also a black overscan border that I don't know how to remove. I know the Ares emulator isn't the most accurate, but at least it displays the image that way by default.

[Discussion] Strange game sequels that fascinate you

Post image

Lately I have been looking at how Metal Gear went through a bit of a tough time finding its footage in the USA since one game in particular that stuck out to me was called Snake’s Revenge.

I know that Hideo Kojima had nothing to do with the game as I just find the game fascinating for its unusual nature since for starters, trying to use stealth doesn’t always work due to how wonky the stealth mechanics are designed.

[Question] Do you prefer the term classic game or retro game & why

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I am a gamer in my mid 30s & while growing up with a single parent I wasn't really able to play games.

This meant that I missed many games & consoles released. Many gamers now consider these games as retro, I personally prefer to use the term classic for these as people seem to argue over what should be coined as retro & classic seems to be not as divisive in the gaming community. Do you prefer one term over the other or do you use a combination of both?

I tend to play mostly classic PC games as GOG has these & they still run even on newer PC hardware easily where as it's harder to play classic console games unless they are available through online subscription services such as PS+ etc.

[Question] Question on old PC disc games

My dad is giving me his collection of physical PC games since I’ve become a collector of physical media…most of the games I grew up playing on the old family computer.

They all have the CD Keys for each still so I am wondering, are progress/accounts tied to the Keys? For example, Battlefield 2 (one of my favorite) is the account I used to play on it tied to the CD key?

Or how all does that work really

[Homebrew] Easy Scanlines: Add CRT Scanlines to Games, Movies and Videos! [Release🔥]

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey! I'm the developer of the Classic Mini Collection and other apps and I wanted to share a project I've been working on over the last week.

It all started a couple of weeks ago when I was playing Grandia 3 using PCSX2. While emulator upscaling makes 3D models sharp, the game just looked unnatural (cinematics and texts looked specially bad). Even modern pixelart games look kinda bad when they don't have scanlines integrated (this is personal taste offcourse).

As I was developing it, I realized I wanted to go beyond games. Many of my best memories of CRT TVs weren't just playing games, but watching 90s TV shows, movies, and music channels on those same screens (HBO, NICKELODEON, Some Beavis and Butt head on MTV, you get the idea). Because of that, I decided to add a TV styled OSD menu and an optional TV logo feature.
_________________________

What it currently does:

  • Simulates basic scanlines and patterns of classic Trinitron and slot-mask screens.
  • It's not a shader, you don't need to worry about GPU processing.
  • You can use it over games, movies, whatever you like!
  • It has a CRT styled menu to control the simulated scanlines width, spacing, opacity and more.
  • Channel Logos: use any png, you can resize, set position, assign to profiles, etc.
  • Profiles: you can manage them from the main GUI along with many other options.
  • Options to start minimized, launch automatically with Windows, etc.
  • Activate scanlines at any moment with a shortcut (default ALT+S)
  • Add any .exe to auto launch it!

Retroarch and the community has done a great job in creating Shaders to imitate this look (that's the right way to do it), but when you can't use those or when using other emulators, options get slim (there are crt filters in some emulators, but they just dont do it for me) and other tools are overkill or not easy to use.

I wanted to build something simple and straightforward to use, since it turned out fine, I decided to share for free in case anyone wants to use it!

Can't post more images so you can check some screenshots of the GUI and download v0.3 right now here

Next updates should bring better filtering, soften effect, round corners, vignette management, etc.

[Article] Recapped and revived a 1991 Sega Wondermega, the Japan-only Sega/JVC unit that combines a Mega Drive and a Mega-CD with a motorised CD tray

Thumbnail

The Sega Wondermega HWM-5010 is one of my favourite pieces of early-90s Sega hardware: a 1991 Japan-only deck, built with JVC, that puts a full Mega Drive and a Mega-CD in a single premium unit with a motorised CD lid instead of the usual flip-top or sliding tray.

This is my second one. It came in with leaking capacitors and a CD tray that would only open aided by hand, so it got a full restoration. It is honestly a pig to take apart and put back together, but every one of the five internal boards was recapped (Mega Drive board, video board, laser pickup, CD-ROM/servo board and the sound board), the laser sled and gears were cleaned and greased, and a fresh CD drive belt went in.

The payoff: it powers up fine, both sides work, and with the new belt that signature motorised tray opens and closes on its own again. I tested the cart side with Contra Hard Corps and the Mega-CD side with Silpheed, both looking great on my OLED.

Anyone else running a Wondermega, or one of the other all-in-one Mega Drive + Mega-CD machines like the Multi-Mega? Curious how they have held up for you.

I'm porting over this list from a comment I made as it is more up to date and will be more searchable. No language

  • Patalliro! (LCD Game & Watch-like)

One additional modern obscurity I know of as well, there is a Ghost in the Shell visual novel homebrew for GBC.

There is also a Galaxy Express 999 lost media game build for Sega CD for random info.

Kirby, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, SMT, Persona, Tales, Final Fantsay, Star Ocean, Street Fighter, Ace & Attorney, Sonic, Fatal Fury, & Kamen Rider have anime do they count O_o

I have also almost assuredly missed some gen 3 or below titles because the characters are unrecognizable, the anime aesthetic is not at all present at that point, and there is almost no shot of experiencing the game in english assuming any text is present.

This probably covers 99% of those interested.

Edit: Oddly enough, this gets us to exactly 100 intellectual properties with official releases. I didn't plan this.

[Discussion] What if Nintendo were to launch the OG Famicom in American in Christmas 1983 instead of the American NES In 1985 at the price of 99.99$?

I Always Has This Question In My Minds for a while now and I always wonder how this would have impacted the North American video games market as a result like how it would have impacted Atari Mattel Or Coleco as a result? and what impact it could have had on the North American video games crash of 1983? And also the whole Video Games Market Like How Would It Affect Sega And NEC And Others Gaming Console Market Then? And Most Important How Successful would it be then?

[Question] Craving unusual retro games

I have been trying to play more games that feel a little different from the usual retro recos. Kagero Deception 2 ended up being one of those games that kept surprising me even after a few hours. what retro game caught you completely off guard the first time you played it? It is always cool when a game has mechanics that sound odd on paper but somehow just click. i think those are the ones that stick with me the longest. there is something fun about learning through trial and error instead of following a guide. i also like when games are a little awkward because it gives them character. now i am hoping to find another hidden gem with that same kind of vibe. my backlog definitely does not need more games but here we are. i would really like to hear what comes to mind for everyone else here

[Question] General question on cables and power supply’s.

Looking to finally test my old devices and games before I start clearing stuff out.

Mainly snes/n64 and ps1/dreamcast in terms of consoles.

My current issue is I have the consoles and controllers but the power and connectors aren’t in the best condition.

I’ve skimmed Amazon and what not and as I understand it as long as I get a suitable power supply for my region and the console, that should be fine.

Regarding the video cables, I’m probably just going to connect it to a pc monitor for testing so I’m assuming any adaptor will do that converts scart or the 3 cables to hdmi?

Suppose my question is for testing purpose, are more generic cables and whatnot fine? Don’t really want to break the bank on some kind of retro setup, just want to test them to see if they work.
