[Question] Looking for N64 developers interested in porting Zelda Spirit Tracks to Nintendo 64

Hello everyone,

I am starting a project to create a Nintendo 64 port/demake of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo DS).

The goal is NOT to emulate the DS, but to recreate the game as a native N64 game using tools like libdragon.

I already have:

- N64 toolchain working

- libdragon compiled

- a basic N64 project compiling to .z64

- basic engine structure started (renderer, player, train systems)

The idea would be:

- Recreate Spirit Tracks gameplay on N64

- Adapt the touchscreen mechanics to N64 controls

- Create a single-screen version

- Use N64-style graphics if needed

I am looking for:

- People experienced with N64 development

- libdragon users

- Reverse engineering / asset extraction people

- Anyone interested in helping or giving advice

Do you think this project is possible?

Does anyone here have experience with N64 ports or homebrew development?

Thanks!

[Discussion] The Legend of Zelda Link to the Past is kind of a letdown

I'm so sorry.

This is just my experience with the SNES library so far, unless I'm missing something that someone can explain. But I'm starting to think the jump in sound/visuals from the NES gave it some kind of permanent plot armor because there are SO many games that aren't the masterpieces I've been told they are. Link to the Past, unfortunately, is one.

Now, I'm not saying it's a bad game. But it's VERY pushy about where to go, what to do, and when to do it. Its strategy of giving you one dungeon at a time so you never get lost also made it so that I never really learned, or got engrossed in, this version of Hyrule.

The original Zelda had this immaculate, organic design that could be tackled in any way, and LttP is more direct, even more "accessible," but it's access to a less interesting and mysterious world.

I know many would disagree, but here's a pretty clear example. In the original Zelda, bombable walls were hard to find, but since there were no clues, it was like any wall COULD be bombable. That made the world feel huge, and full of mystery. The feeling of busting the wall of a dungeon or finding a random cave was magical. It still is.

LttP gives you those obvious cracked walls which, I get it, we want every player to find every bombable wall no matter how afraid of exploring they are, but that basically takes a feeling of freedom and turns it into a door that costs 1 Bomb to open.

This difference between TLoZ and LttP is the kind of thing that doesn't matter as a kid because everything in games is magical, but to me, only one is magical as an adult.

I don't know if anyone else feels this way (probably not). But I was stoked to finally play this "masterpiece," and it just felt overpraised to me. There are games made before and after it that do what I think it's doing, better than I think it does it.

-Just a random opinion.

[Homebrew] Easy Scanlines: Add CRT Scanlines to Games, Movies and Videos! [ReleasešŸ”„]

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hey! I'm the developer of theĀ Classic Mini CollectionĀ and other apps and I wanted to share a project I've been working on over the last week.

It all started a couple of weeks ago when I was playingĀ Grandia 3Ā using PCSX2. While emulator upscaling makes 3D models sharp, the game just looked unnatural (cinematics and texts looked specially bad). Even modern pixelart games look kinda bad when they don't have scanlines integrated (this is personal taste offcourse).

As I was developing it,Ā I realized I wanted to go beyond games. Many of my best memories of CRT TVs weren't just playing games, but watching 90s TV shows, movies, and music channels on those same screens (HBO, NICKELODEON, Some Beavis and Butt head on MTV, you get the idea). Because of that, I decided to add a TV styled OSD menu and an optional TV logo feature.
_________________________

What it currently does:

  • Simulates basic scanlines and patterns of classic Trinitron and slot-mask screens.
  • It's not a shader, you don't need to worry about GPU processing.
  • You can use it over games, movies, whatever you like!
  • It has a CRT styled menu to control the simulated scanlines width, spacing, opacity and more.
  • Channel Logos:Ā use any png, you can resize, set position, assign to profiles, etc.
  • Profiles:Ā you can manage them from the main GUI along with many other options.
  • Options to start minimized, launch automatically with Windows, etc.
  • Activate scanlines at any moment with a shortcut (default ALT+S)
  • Add any .exe to auto launch it!

Retroarch and the community has done a great job in creating Shaders to imitate this look (that's the right way to do it), but when you can't use those or when using other emulators, options get slim (there are crt filters in some emulators, but they just dont do it for me) and other tools are overkill or not easy to use.

I wanted to build something simple and straightforward to use, since it turned out fine, I decided to share for free in case anyone wants to use it!

Can't post more images so you can check some screenshots of the GUI and download v0.3 right nowĀ here

Next updates should bring better filtering, soften effect, round corners, vignette management, etc.

[Just a Thought] What if "SMB" were "MW" in the first place? I'm not trolling—just proposing a hypothesis...

Post image

My reasons are:

- The original NES Mario Bros. is a single-screen action game. Since Super Mario Bros. expanded the game to 8 worlds, it would make sense if it had been called Mario World.

- As for the SNES Super Mario World, it already made sense for it to be called Super Mario World because the "Super" prefix was standard for SNES sequels upgraded from older titles—like Super Donkey Kong (from Donkey Kong) or Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (from Ghouls 'N Ghosts), and therefore as a result, Super Mario World from Mario World.

[Discussion] Preaching to the Choir: FPGA as Preservation Tools

Post image
77 Upvotes

This past weekend I was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of my SuperStation one (S1) and with it came a whole unexpected afternoon of tinkering and testing that reinforced my love this new wave of retro preservation. I'm sure many of you are familiar with this tech already but for those who aren't FPGAs are versatile boards that can, if programed correctly, emulate hardware of older devices. They have many other uses as well, ie military hardware and even upscalers like the RetroTink 4K.

At the very least, the tech is impressive, but at it's height, it's fucking bananas. If you are like me, which I know many of you on here are, you're taking every precaution you can to ensure your collection of consoles are in their most tip top shape. You've replaced caps when needed, fixing cold/cracked joints when they arise, or, like I did just last year, essentially performed surgery on a genesis to bypass many parts of the board to bring it back to life. We care about retro games, but really many of us want to know that we'll be able to play these games as they were intended even in old age. But the reality is that hardware doesn't last forever. GPUs and Boards die and capacitors leak without knowing, or corrosion spreads on a board without you're knowledge, or at least until you notice too late.

All of that was to bring me to the thick of this conversation... FPGA consoles.

As of now, I've engaged with three types of FPGA manufacturers/brands: RetroRemake's S1, the Analogue 3D, and the FunnyPlaying FP-GBC. All of which are stupid impressive with how accurate they run games, as if they were on actual hardware. There are many many other products and manufacturers. If you wanna go down a rabbit hole, just look into the MiSTer community and get ready to get lost in the content.

I know there are a bunch of people who may see this and say something like, "Wait til they find out about emulation" or "Emulation is free". And yes, I get that, emulation is often fantastic and can be better and more accessible for most, but as someone who emulated for decades, I eventually came back to the original consoles and played as close to their native presentation as I could. I want the scanlines, I want the crunchy graphics, I want the developer's initial intentions to be fulfilled. I want the original experience and I want it to last.

Now, Analogue is likely the most popular of the manufacturers I mentioned, but one thing that urks me a bit with their 3D, though I love it overall, is that it only has an HDMI for display output. As someone who uses a RetroTink and CRT, I really wish that they gave us an option for analogue signals... Analogue doesn't offer analogue =P ... Otherwise, the console is arguably the best way to play original N64 games on a modern display, being able to overclock the system and reduce the infamous framerate drops of the OG console.

The S1 mediates this display issue by allowing component, composite, vga, hdmi signals, all around. It's awesome. It's fucking bananas. I love it so far but what it does better in preserving the original outputs of these consoles, it loses in it's accessibility. That MiSTer project I was talking about is what the S1 is based on, and, for better or worse, the start up and continued usage is not beginner friendly. I'm saying that as someone who uses Arch and other Linux builds and loves the tinkering aspect of these devices. If you wanted to get an S1 for your kid, it might be good for them to mess around and learn on, but it's not gonna be without some headaches.

Regardless of accessibility and the like, I love supporting these projects as they give me hope that when my PS1 dies, and the ebay/craigslist listings start thinning out, these FPGA consoles will be around and available brand new, and I can continue to experience games the way I love them and the way I want to experience them.

How do you all feel about FPGA? Have you gotten into the projects out there or do you have an Analogue or the like? I would love to know your thoughts.

I Always Has This Question In My Minds for a while now and I always wonder how this would have impacted the North American video games market as a result like how it would have impacted Atari Mattel Or Coleco as a result? and what impact it could have had on the North American video games crash of 1983? And also the whole Video Games Market Like How Would It Affect Sega And NEC And Others Gaming Console Market Then? And Most Important How Successful would it be then?

[Question] Does anyone still remember KKND2: Krossfire from Beam Software?

Post image
65 Upvotes

KKND2: Krossfire like its predecessor Krush, Kill ’n’ Destroy and the expansion KKND Xtreme is a Classic Real‑Time Strategy Game from the 90s. The Series belongs to the Era in which Base Building, Resource Management and Faction Specific Unit Design defined the RTS Genre.

In Terms of Gameplay and Style, KKND2 can be compared to other Strategy Games of the 90s, including Command & Conquer, Dune 2000, Age of Empires, StarCraft, Dark Reign, Warcraft II, Total Annihilation, Z the Game, Earth 2140 and actually D.O.R.F. as well. Despite these Similarities, KKND2 maintains its own Identity through its Post Apocalyptic Setting and three Distinctly different Factions.

[Article] Recapped and revived a 1991 Sega Wondermega, the Japan-only Sega/JVC unit that combines a Mega Drive and a Mega-CD with a motorised CD tray

Thumbnail
gallery
58 Upvotes

The Sega Wondermega HWM-5010 is one of my favourite pieces of early-90s Sega hardware: a 1991 Japan-only deck, built with JVC, that puts a full Mega Drive and a Mega-CD in a single premium unit with a motorised CD lid instead of the usual flip-top or sliding tray.

This is my second one. It came in with leaking capacitors and a CD tray that would only open aided by hand, so it got a full restoration. It is honestly a pig to take apart and put back together, but every one of the five internal boards was recapped (Mega Drive board, video board, laser pickup, CD-ROM/servo board and the sound board), the laser sled and gears were cleaned and greased, and a fresh CD drive belt went in.

The payoff: it powers up fine, both sides work, and with the new belt that signature motorised tray opens and closes on its own again. I tested the cart side with Contra Hard Corps and the Mega-CD side with Silpheed, both looking great on my OLED.

Anyone else running a Wondermega, or one of the other all-in-one Mega Drive + Mega-CD machines like the Multi-Mega? Curious how they have held up for you.

I'm porting over this list from a comment I made as it is more up to date and will be more searchable. Every listed franchise below has a retro video game made before PS1/Saturn or for handhelds before Nintendo DS. I wanted to stick to consoles that are overwhelmingly 2D. I probably missed some things, please let me know if so!

One additional modern obscurity I know of as well, there is a Ghost in the Shell visual novel homebrew for GBC.

There is also a Galaxy Express 999 lost media game build for Sega CD for random info.

Kirby, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, SMT, Persona, Tales, Final Fantsay, Star Ocean, Street Fighter, Ace & Attorney, Sonic, Fatal Fury, & Kamen Rider have anime do they count O_o

I have also almost assuredly missed some gen 3 or below titles because the characters are unrecognizable, the anime aesthetic is not at all present at that point, and there is almost no shot of experiencing the game in english assuming any text is present.

This probably covers 99% of those interested.

Edit: Oddly enough, this gets us to exactly 100 intellectual properties with official releases. I didn't plan this.

[Question] Craving unusual retro games

I have been trying to play more games that feel a little different from the usual retro recos. Kagero Deception 2 ended up being one of those games that kept surprising me even after a few hours. what retro game caught you completely off guard the first time you played it? It is always cool when a game has mechanics that sound odd on paper but somehow just click. i think those are the ones that stick with me the longest. there is something fun about learning through trial and error instead of following a guide. i also like when games are a little awkward because it gives them character. now i am hoping to find another hidden gem with that same kind of vibe. my backlog definitely does not need more games but here we are. i would really like to hear what comes to mind for everyone else here
