MOD POST Remembering and Honoring u/bluequail

It is with a heavy heart that I share some incredibly sad news with our community.

Our top mod [u/bluequail](u/bluequail) passed away on June 30th. I was informed on that day by her oldest son. He also announced it on her facebook page for those who knew her IRL.

bluequail was a vital part of this community, volunteering her time, energy, and passion to help make this space a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. She was an active mod in this same sub for over 16 years. It's incredibly rare to see that level of commitment and longevity these days. She was a great friend and I miss her.

She was a very kind woman who not only took care of her family, but was also very kind and generous to people in need everywhere. She donated a lot of money over the years to complete strangers on Reddit, in subs like [r/assistance](r/assistance) and [r/care](r/care). She helped people IRL too, and even welcomed some people into her own home. She also cared for animals on her farm.

My thoughts and prayers are with bluequail’s family, loved ones, and friends during this difficult time. Thank you all for being part of this community and for helping us honor her memory. Her presence will be deeply missed here.

I know she made many friends on Reddit under this username or her other account where she made most of her donations. I want to invite everyone to use the comment section below as a space to share your favorite memories, expressions of gratitude, or kind words in her honor.

Please keep all comments respectful and supportive.

Posting Guidelines

  • Posters and commenters must now have an account at least 15 days old with atleast 50 comment karma. These will be automatically removed if you do not meet the requirements.

  • Do not submit a post with a title in all caps, or a blank post with just a title. These will be removed automatically.

  • Please be specific with your headline rather than just saying you need advice, make it clear in your post about what you need help/advice about.

  • No polls or surveys.

Rules

Below are the rules of this sub. Disregarding any of these rules may result in a ban. Both posts and comments are subject to all rules.

  1. Nothing personal relationship, sex, or dating related or anything about stalking a person. Even commenting on these threads is a grounds for a ban.

/r/needadvice is a subreddit for getting advice about things going on in our lives outside of our relationship with significant others, potential significant others, and significant others of days past. Your relationship, your parent's relationships, your friend's relationships... if you are dealing with any person's romantic relationship, it doesn't belong in here. (This is code for "no romance related stuff") No dating advice. No hookup advice. No sex related advice, including anything involving rape (even if it happened to you), molestation, or underage sexual activity.

  1. Nothing about personal messaging each other - Don't ask or tell posters or other commenters to PM, DM, or inbox you.

  2. No sharing/posting to drama subs - Anybody cross posting any threads to the drama causing subs (subreddit drama, any of the SRS, just anything to increase the drama in a thread) will be banned. That just won't be tolerated at any level. Don't tattle on the mods of other subs here either.

  3. No revenge submissions - No "How to get even" at all, not in submissions, not in comments.

  4. No threadjacking or comment qualifiers - Stay focused on OP's problem. If you disagree with someone else's advice, offer some advice of your own with a top level comment instead of debating. If you agree with someone's advice and have nothing to add, just upvote it.

  5. No misogyny, misandry, racism, religious intolerance, or similar - Respect one another, even those you disagree with. We're all equal here. It does not matter if you're male, female, null, both, or nongendered. It does not matter where your come from, or what color your skin is. When meeting someone from a different walk of life, treat that person as you would like them to treat you.

  6. No lying advice - Don't ask how to lie, don't advise on lying.

  7. No references to suicides - Anything related to suicidal ideations are not allowed. For the sake of yours or your family/friend's safety, anything mentioning suicide needs to go to /r/SuicideWatch

  8. No soliciting items or funds - Since we allow throwaways, don't solicit money in here. Please view any effort to solicit money in here as a scam. But any need for donations can go to /r/assistance or /r/care.

  9. No advertising - Do not link your subreddit (unless it is relevant to the subject matter of the post), your youtube page, your personal website, clickbait, or stuff for sale. Mods are the arbiters of what constitutes advertising.

  10. Kinda Safe for work - We know that lots of controversial and personal things get talked about here, and that's fine. Try to keep your titles safe for work by avoiding foul language and graphic descriptions.

  11. Nothing about missing persons - Don't ask about how to track someone down or find someone you used to know.

  12. No stand-alone jokes. A joke with legitimate advice is fine, but not by itself.

Ban Appeals

  • For ban appeals: Do not delete any of your comments and posts, especially if they were removed by the mods. Deleting submissions looks evasive, and it forces us to choose between your word and our memory. Only the mod that removed you can reinstate you.

  • Ask once.

  • Ask nicely.

Medical Hand randomly cramps/seizes up??

im honestly not sure how to explain this but sometimes ill do smth with my hand for example gripping something too tightly while doing a repetitive motion (brushing my hair) and my hand will start to cramp and i csnt move them but their like moving in their own directions?? i have to physically hold my hand with the other one to stop it, its extremely uncomfortable but only happens when I grip something too hard.

today was an odd experience, I was holding my handbag with my hand but on my fingers sort of and I got into my mums car and it started to happen but I don’t understand why? this doesn’t happen a lot as most of the time if I’m doing something that can trigger it I can feel a cramp coming and I’ll stop or loosen my grip.

any advice is appreciate, thank you in advance!

Mental Health Is letting my introverted brother quit college helping him, or setting him up to fail?

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out because I feel totally helpless and really need some advice about my younger brother. I’m the older sibling, and since I lived away from home for a few years and am naturally pretty extroverted, adjusting to new places was never a big deal for me. My brother is completely different—he’s super quiet, keeps to himself, and only has about two close friends. He moved away for college, and the homesickness has been hitting him so hard. He’s somehow pushed through 1.5 whole years, but it hasn't gotten any better, and now he just wants to drop everything and come back home for good.

It breaks my heart to see him like this, so I told him that if he’s truly miserable, he can come home anytime and we’ll figure things out together because his happiness comes first. But honestly, as his older sibling, I’m terrified. I’m so worried that because he’s so introverted and reserved, it’s going to be really hard for him to handle the real world later on if he gives up now.

Since I’ve never felt this kind of overwhelming homesickness myself, I’m at a total loss on how to talk to him. What can I say to comfort him right now, and how can I help him build confidence without letting him make a decision he might regret later?

Mental Health Moving following mental health breakdown

At home for ages I have been always on edge and avoiding my parents - constant opinions, defensiveness, always negative energy behind what they want to say.

About a month ago, I put my name down for a HA flat and I got first in the line and went for a viewing today but my parents are refusing to let me go because they are worried I will go off the deep end again! They’re forgetting their behaviour is part of the reason I overdosed - constant flippancy since I was 3, their ignorance/inappropriate dealing with my ASD when I was diagnosed (I started mainstream school and realised more adults were involved and I was getting pulled out for things and I asked my parents who were being dismissive on my questions) and the pattern went on till today - they are always ignoring and downplaying my issues, saying I need to consider their own first 😩🙄

What should I genuinely do? Social housing is like hens teeth these days and the location is perfect - in town near public transport so I can get to uni quickly and I have an appt with the crisis doctor tomorrow morning who I will be asking about the move and seeing what they think of it - but I think I need somewhere new and space so my parents get a much needed reality check

Mental Health I keep losing whatever I do and I am tired of it.

First of all I’m sorry for my bad English, it’s not my native language. While every other person looses and wins. I just loose. Whatever I do, support, want, hope it keeps losing. I keep losing. And I am very disapointed at myself. But I don’t know what to do. And I don’t have the energy or the motivation to keep going. I am tired of disapointing myself, my family and losing. I don’t know what to do.

Medical Health anxiety wanting advice to know if something is likely

I’m extremely health anxious but I smashed my phone screen yesterday accidentally. When I was in bed last night after touching my screen I touched my eye, I’ve been panicked ever since that there is a small shard of glass from the screen in my eye. My eye isn’t red, it’s not watering it just feels like something is in it. Am I worrying myself for nothing? My partner says if something was in it I’d know I’m just scared if glass is in it and I leave it

Education school life crisis. feeling rlly confused and depressed

I recently got suspended from school for one day due to a disciplinary issue. The incident happened on Monday.

For some background, I'm a Grade 11 student in India. I consider myself reasonably intelligent, but my habits—procrastination, laziness, and not putting in consistent effort—as well as my attitude toward others, have always held me back from achieving what I know I'm capable of.

On Sunday, I told my mother that I would play Valorant with my friend for a couple of hours and then study. After I finished playing, I went to eat something. During that time, my mother hid my laptop charger. I had several assignments to complete because I had already fallen behind due to procrastination, but I decided to wait a few hours before asking her for it. When I finally asked, she said she would give it back by 8:30 p.m., but she didn't return it until around 9:30 p.m.

By then, my father had come home from work. He had been drinking, although during the daytime he is usually a very caring father. I went upstairs to eat, and when he came upstairs, he told me to go to my room and iron my clothes for the next day.

It was already around 10:00 p.m., and my friend was about to go to sleep, so I messaged him to send me some homework that I still needed to complete. When my father came downstairs again and saw that I had not ironed my clothes yet, he became angry. He scolded me, saying that I never listened to him, and he hit me. He also threatened to take me out of my school and break my laptop.

The next morning, I went to school in a very bad mood because of everything that had happened the previous night. I was also stressed because my homework was incomplete.

While practicing for a roleplay that we had later that week, one of my friends and I got into an argument. I lost my temper, grabbed him by the neck, and used abusive language toward him. This kind of rough behavior had unfortunately become common in our friendship, but this time our Vice Principal happened to walk past the classroom and witnessed the incident.

Later, I was called to school along with my father, where I was informed that I had been suspended for one day. My father believes that the situation is my fault because I don't always listen to or respect my elders. I do agree that I was wrong to use abusive language at school and to take my anger out on my friend. Regardless of how upset I was, my actions were inappropriate, and I accept responsibility for them.

Now, I'm looking for advice on a few things:

  • How can I bring about a positive change in myself?
  • How can I become more respectful and better at listening to my elders? I've often felt that if I say I'll do something after a little while instead of immediately, I'm not doing anything wrong, but this seems to create problems.
  • How can I make a good impression on my principal after this incident?
  • How can I maintain a better relationship with my mother? No matter how much I try to improve, we often end up arguing, and I feel that she doesn't treat me kindly.
  • How can I stop being so lazy and procrastinating every day?
  • How do i remember most of the advice that the principal gave me in school? I zoned out during the conselling session and forgot most of everything

Career How do you cope when a dream opportunity disappears suddenly?

I’m (M22) struggling with a major disappointment and could use some perspective.

I recently went through a hiring process for a role at a media company I really admire. I made it through multiple rounds, completed a writing/research assignment, and had a second interview last week. Thought I was close to the finish line.

Then today I got an email saying the team had decided to “pause hiring for now.” Logically, I understand this may have nothing to do with me. But emotionally, it’s been really difficult. I do have another job offer as a safety net (in a completely different and uninteresting field), but I’m struggling because this was the opportunity I actually cared about.

For people who have experienced something similar: how do you stop yourself from treating one setback as proof that your whole future is ruined? How do you process losing something you were genuinely excited about?

Life Decisions I 19(f) am abt to be kicked out and need help

So bascially, I have a strict father and I just wanted to have some independence, I had wanted to go to my grandmother's for the summer, even after he told me no, before I confronted him again and said Im going, to practice driving too, because he hadnt helped me all summer, I intended to come back before school started, but if thats his ultimatum that if I go im not coming back

So idk anymore

I wanted to get a car and a job etc, then go to a pretty elite or reputable school for art and anthro, for full ride, and Ik its optimistic, but Im tired of being at home, its strict and draining

a couple hours later, my dad called me into his room to talk more

He said to me that im not thinking bascially or that something else is happening, because all of a sudden I wnna go to my grandma's, and yeah half true cuz my mom talked to me

And also, how im not thinking this thru, how im making one of the biggest mistakes of my life how this will set me back and I won't be able to go back to school so easily and im digging a hole under my feet just by messing the first semester, how I cant just apply to schools in this short of a notice and who will sign my papers and coloans etc etc

How he had a whole plan for me , for a smooth transition period l, how I should stay one more year and listen to my dad, how at the end of this month he'll put me in drivers school ill get my license and ill be in the dorm and on my own next year for my juniors (its tempting but I dont wnna, I was gnna transfer from my school anyways, I hate the city im kn, and he says he put me in this cuz the area was safe and it was one of the best schools in America, when its not just because the art program can have ur deisgn put on the new York clock tower) and how if I do get into a school outside he won't help me and im on my own

And also how he'll never kick his kids out but won't let me set a bad example or cause chaos for the family for my siblings etc, and how hes offering me this and if I leave he won't help me etc

He said hes been dealing with his own health and recently finding out my brother has mental issues and shi, and thats why hes been focusing on my brother this year and allat

And also how if I leave. Im dropping out of school bascially and the navy will.kick me off health insurance etc

But my mom said my brother was never taken to the docter and he seems to be giving excuses why he didnt and not owning up etc. And how its seems it's good hes trying to stop me but doing it wrong, by just trying to scare me or make me doubt

At the same time I dont rlly trust ny grandma, shes messy, and still has bad blood with my father, and my mom says its good to listen to my dad too, but I dont wanna, he says im thinking with my emotions not thinking this thru, but I want my own life I just wanna draw and illustrate, and be at home and be free and work and go to school

Idk he ruined my flow with that convo, is he bring true how ill be 30 by the time im back on track and go to school, he says ill be telling my grandkids not to do what I did and how this happened to him when he had a scha9lrshipnfor Canada and went to the US and then had to go back to school at 40 and hownhe now has a masters it dont help him cuz he dont use it and he's old and allat

And idk who to trust and im tired and feel trapped i wish my life could be normal.

Idk, some advice on what to do, is this the right decision Im making? Like am I going to ruin my life if I do this?

Life Decisions How do I go about my shitty behavior?

How do I go about my shitty behavior?

I (19m white) had a friend (19m) from online. He knew where I lived but for some reason he’d never tell me where he lived- not even a general location. Eventually he said he lived in Korea- then switched it to Europe- then Korea again. It became kind of a joke between us because it was so absurd that he changed his location regularly. We were in a group chat with 3 other friends of ours.. I’ll call them E, J, and L.

My friend eventually called me a stupid American during our banter and called me “racist” and I in turn called him a “stupid Korean European” as a joke- now I was fully aware he didn’t live in either places, but I said it anyway. Eventually “L” asked why we were being racist and in response my friend said “he’s only racist to me” and I replied with “that’s right European”.

Eventually in a later conversation I call him a slow ass European Korean.

A week later I see “J” post a story talking about how racist jokes aren’t funny- which I agreed with and liked- but then I didn’t realize he was talking about me specifically.

I (and my friend) were perhaps foolishly under the assumption that what we did wasn’t racist because we weren’t originally intending it to be about race- but about the places we were or weren’t from. But I apologized to everyone because I did offend and make people uncomfortable.

Now I’m here wondering if I should really be around people especially Poc because what I did is kinda a permanent thing. I wonder how honest I should be or if I should publicly admit what I did so I wouldn’t be deceitful. I’m also a little hesitant about well doing a lot of stuff socially or well any of those things. Im not sure what my boundaries for things should be- so advice would be liked.

I’m not gonna pretend I’ve not been a piece of shit but is it forgivable? Like how bad was it and how should I be accountable/ allow people to hold me accountable?

Career Stuck between two different life paths

I (23F) just finished a masters program this past May in the tech field, and need some advice on what to do next.

I enjoyed the program in some ways, but halfway through the program I was having some doubts—and even almost dropped out—and decided to sort of spontaneously apply for a doctorate program in clinical psychology. I was a psych major in undergrad, and liked the field a lot before switching into tech.

I was super surprised that I’d gotten into the program, but I did and it’s supposed to start next month. As time is running out to figure out my next steps, I’m now feeling extremely conflicted. The program is 5 years in a city 3 hours away from where I currently live. Additionally, the financial picture of my two options are pretty different. I have ~150k saved up currently (from a mix of savings and inheritance from my grandmother passing away last year).

This would be enough for me to do the doctorate program, but I would graduate at 28 with essentially no savings. Or, I could invest all of that money now and get a full-time job with my masters degree and just be done with it.

I’m sure i’d be able to find a job that I enjoyed, but I also think I would really enjoy being a psychologist (after getting through the five years of school, and paying all of that money).

I keep going back and forth in my mind on what I should do. I feel like no matter what decision I make, i’ll somehow regret it and feel unsatisfied. Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, i’m typing this all out mid spiral lol.

I need to sign a lease on an apartment very soon if I’m going to do the program, so I do need to figure this out pretty soon I fear.

Friendships My friend ran away from home and I don't know what to do.

A close friend that I have a complicated relationship with recently ran away from home because her parents started going through everything on her phone after they found out she had been seeing her boyfriend for a long time behind their back. I won't give too much detail but basically she has been going through a phase where she has been very promiscuous and engaged in a lot of risky behavior.

I am not judging her, but I know that she is not mentally in a good place right now, and although she is safe for the short term, all she has is her phone, she has blocked all contact with her parents, and she does not know whether she will return to university in the fall.

She lives in a large city, and although she is currently financially okay, I don't trust her boyfriend (I don't know him), and I am worried that something bad will happen. Is there something I can do to help her? I reached out a couple days ago checking in but she hasn't responded, although she posted on her story so I guess she isn't too desperate. Still, I am super concerned.

Friendships should i cut this friend off or stay silent? what to do past this point?

okay so basically, one of my irl friends is a popular furry on tiktok and she and her gf have a beware on them for racism and online harassment. when i saw it, i was shocked because i've known this person since before 2023 and nothing like this had ever been brought up about her nor did anything happen with me and her (the person who made the beware is no more than an acquaintance to me, if that helps). for months now i've been in contact with both sides and on good terms with both, but just earlier i commented on a different tiktok explaining to someone the reasons there's drama around my friend and then she got mad at me after i tried to interact with her in a discord server she co-owns (my message wasn't related to the drama at all). now she and her gf are mad at me and she asked me to block the creator of the video i commented on so my comments would be deleted, so i did because i hoped it would help keep us on good terms. now i'm waiting for her to respond to my apology other than asking me if i blocked that other guy yet and now i don't know what to do. if it helps any, i have always found the screenshots in the beware to be confusing as i can't tell what's happening with my autistic brain, even when i got both sides of the story (one was much more detailed than the other). anything helps as i hate conflict and already struggle with making friends so i don't want to lose one over this

Education Feel like a loser for attending community college

I'm 18 and starting community college this fall because it made the most financial sense. Some of my friends are going to four-year universities, and i'm honestly pretty jealous, I was really hoping college would be a fresh start since I was pretty quiet in high school and didn't make many friends. Now I'm worried I'll miss out on that experience and end up just as lonely.
Has anyone else felt this way? If you started at community college, did you still make friends, or did you feel like you missed out compared to people at four year schools?

Mental Health 22M, I don't know to to move forward anymore in life.

I'm 22, turning 23 this August, and I honestly feel like I've wasted the last few years of my life.

I graduated with a degree in Hotel Management in 2024, but I never worked in the hotel industry. Looking back, I don't even know why I chose that degree. It feels like one of the biggest mistakes I've made.

Instead, I completed two internships—4 months in digital marketing and 6 months in brand management at a well-known company. During my internship, I worked with people from IITs and IIMs, and they inspired me to prepare for MBA entrance exams. I gave it my best shot, but I failed every exam I appeared for.

Since then, I've been trying to find a full-time job, but nothing has worked out. I've been unemployed for almost a year now. My parents and sister have been very supportive and have never pressured me, but I still feel guilty depending on them at this age.

These days I have become numb and silent I hardly get happy over something,

I don't have any close friends , I have no one to talk to and no social life . Am I going through depression?

The hardest part is that I've lost the excitement and curiosity I used to have. . Even my beliefs have changed over the years, and I've become agnostic.

I don't know exactly what I'm expecting from posting this. Maybe I just needed to say it out loud. If anyone has gone through a phase where they felt completely stuck in their early 20s, how did you get your life back on track?

Pls help Thanks

Career I need help deciding which job I should take?

I’ve been offered a 3-6+ month IT contract to work with St.Jude, I have a job offer to work as an EMT apprentice and another one to work at FedEx as an electronics technician. I applied and interviewed for this positions 4-5 months ago and now they’ve all pretty much at the same time offered me a job.

I’ve always wanted to work at St.Jude and there’s a chance I’ll get converted full time but nothing is guaranteed.

The EMT job is a great idea because I want to help people and go into more of a medical setting.

The FedEx one is a great idea as well because I love building things and working with my hands.

I should also mention I do have a heart condition even though I have zero restrictions, doing physical work can still be a risk for me. I’m not sure if this matters in this question but the pay rates are the following:

St.Jude: 23 an hour
EMT apprentice: 12 an hour
FedEx: 18 an hour

Which one would be the better choice to pick

Medical Tiny glass splinter might be in thumb - what to do?

So my phone has a jagged screen (covered it with tape btw) and I think a splinter from there has got I to my thumb.

If I touch it it feels like a splinter (mild pain - totally bearable but yea that doesn't make it safe by default)

Doesn't pain continuously.

I can't see anything and if I run my finger nail over the area I don't feel any pain in it without putting pressure (so apparently running a finger or nail over it would push it triggering pain so I know it is there)

I'm assuming it's buried deeper. What to do? See the doctor? Let my body do it's thing? Try removing it myself with a pin or smth? (AI advised against this but yes it can totally be u reliable - and please do not downvote me for mentioning AI ik it was dumb to use it here but now I need help)

edit: thank you soooo much everyone!!!

Career Overwhelmed with having to find work

I’ve decided to move to Berlin from Prague and gave myself time until October or November to move. I’ve decided the move is the best for me as I have no place back in Prague either, and there are more opportunities over here in the music industry(audio engineering) in Berlin where I just finished taking a course. On top working towards being able to make extra income with visual art, making visuals for live music shows for different musicians. I already have some people that want me to do their live visuals but since I am a beginner, I’m starting out doing that for free to build portfolio. Along with the audio engineering I need to start with unpaid work to gain experience and build portfolio as well. I have a realistic plan for that.

But, meanwhile, I must find a part time job to gain proof of income. I have an additional income of 1k+ euro if I need some extra, but I can’t rely on it and this cannot be used as proof of income. I have worked as a QA tester/associate producer before, for a mobile game studio, and then I’ve worked as a receptionist for a year abroad. I’ve never worked as a barista or anything like that and I don’t know how to go about it if I have zero experience to put on my resume.

I also tried looking for some flexible remote customer support work with only a year of experience but that is tough as well, majority of roles require more experience than that.

I don’t know what my possibilities are, I’m overwhelmed, stressed, and not sure where to start. I don’t speak german either but apparently that’s not a problem coming from both Berlin-born germans and also foreigners.

The ad in question is Base44. It showed up once, I blocked it as I am anti any kind of AI. I thought it was the end of it, but now I'm bombarded with these ads. For people who don't know: it's just an AI site builder website, but for some reason people owning this app put the ad as everything. This one showed as "restaurants ad" even though the ad itself had nothing to do with this topic. I'm somebody who watches quite a lot of youtube videos in the background, so you can imagine my frustration when for 7th time in a ROW after blocking each time, the same exact ad plays. I had previously reported this ad to google, but it seems that it grants them revenue and they do not wish to do something about it.
I need advice on if I can somehow get rid of this ad, as I am physically losing my mind every time it plays, as if it intentionally makes me agitated. I tried visiting websites I know would give me ads related to them, such as loop or spotify, but somehow I had no luck getting them to show up as often as this damn AI ad does. It may seem stupid, but I do need help. I'm holding a counter on how many times this ad shows up on youtube. It's been 10 times this week, and it's Monday.
