Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction because I've spent the last few days trying to diagnose this issue and I'm running out of ideas.
I first noticed the problem while playing Dark Souls III. The game starts at around 60 FPS, but after about 10–20 seconds, performance suddenly drops to 20–30 FPS with heavy stuttering.
The first thing I checked was whether the game was actually using the dedicated NVIDIA GPU instead of the integrated graphics. It was.
After that, I started monitoring the system using GPU-Z, HWiNFO64, CPU-Z, and Unigine Heaven to see what was happening.
System
- Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4
- Intel Core i7-1255U
- NVIDIA GeForce MX550
- Original 65 W Lenovo charger (always plugged in)
I mainly use this laptop for video editing, photo editing, programming, and general productivity, and I've never noticed any issues outside of gaming.
What I've found
While gaming or benchmarking:
- GPU usage stays around 99–100%
- GPU clock stays locked at 1065 MHz
- GPU board power stays around 6–8 W
- HWiNFO reports Power and Thermal as the active performance limiters
The strange part is that, when the laptop is completely cold, the GPU will sometimes draw 20–30 W and perform much better for a short time. After a while, it drops back to 6–8 W and stays there.
What I've already tried
- Updated the BIOS
- Installed the latest NVIDIA drivers
- Confirmed Windows is using the dedicated GPU
- Enabled the highest performance power settings in Windows and Lenovo Vantage
- Disabled Intelligent Cooling Boost in BIOS
- Tested with Unigine Heaven while monitoring sensors
None of these changed the behavior.
I've attached HWiNFO screenshots taken while the GPU was under load.
At this point, I'm trying to figure out whether this is:
- a cooling issue,
- firmware or EC power limiting,
- a hardware problem,
- or something else entirely.
Has anyone seen something like this before or have any suggestions on what I should investigate next?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
