This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Discussion Whatever happened to cases with glass-front rgb fans? Non-mesh.

Confusing title. Here's an example because I don't quite know what they're called: https://www.amazon.ca/Gamdias-E3-Gaming-Tempered-Motherboard/dp/B0B8VMNN2S?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB

I know that mesh is the logical option and won't kill your pc, but I genuinely can't find clear glass front panel cases anymore and it's honestly a shame. They're the prettiest parts I swear.

Also the case I linked used to be 90 CAD. Means they're probably cutting production of these types of cases by quite a bit.

Build Help 5070 ti vs 9070 xt gaming experience

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to build my first gaming PC with a 7800X3D and either an 9070 XT or an 5070 Ti.

For some background, I've been gaming on a laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti for the past 7 years. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I only play on weekends. Most of the time I play Dota 2, and occasionally I play AAA single-player games.

I haven't really kept up with the GPU or PC market over the last 7 years. From my brief research, it seems that the 9070 XT and 5070 Ti offer similar performance.

Since I only play on weekends, I'd prefer a GPU that's simple to use and as close to "plug and play" as possible. I don't want to spend time tweaking settings for every game. I'm fine with making occasional adjustments if necessary, but I don't want to do it every time I play.

In my country, the RTX 5070 Ti costs about $180 USD more than the RX 9070 XT. I can afford the 5070 Ti if it's worth it, but I generally prefer the better price-to-performance option since I don't game that much.

To be honest, I think this might be my first and last gaming PC because I've gradually been losing interest in gaming over the years. I expect I'll probably stop gaming altogether in about 5 years, so I'm looking for a GPU that can comfortably last until 5 years.

Given my situation, which GPU would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Troubleshooting SD Card burnt up, Computer USB slot is hot. WHAT DO I DO

The title basically explains it all. My usb slot is heating up all of a sudden whenever I plug in my card reader and sd card. All of a sudden, it burns my finger?! How do I fix this because NOW, my sd card isn't recognized!

Discussion Ryzen 7 5800XT vs 5800x3d

On Amazon right now, the 5800XT is $220 while the x3d is $350. I have a 5070ti, and my current cpu is a 5600x. AM5 isn’t feasible right now with the ram prices, so I’m looking to make the most of my AM4 platform. Is the x3d worth an extra $130? I intend to skip the AM5 generation altogether and rock this build for half a decade or more, for the record.

Troubleshooting Power SW not working

Upvotes

When I turned my PC on for the first time nothing really happened so I did a bit of testing and the power SW was at fault. I used a screwdriver to connect the two pins and it turned on so I know that the motherboard isn't the problem. I searched it up and it says my cable might be broken, what can I do now

Discussion How is everyone keeping up with RAM prices/stock right now?

Upvotes

How’s everyone actually keeping up with RAM stock and pricing right now? Are you checking specific sites regularly, using trackers or alerts, or just refreshing and hoping?

I’m curious if there is a working method or if it’s mostly chaos that the RAM crisis has caused…

Build Upgrade 5070 vs 9070xt for my use.

I know, this was already asked a lot, but I'm not looking for gaming performance alone.

For context: I live in Brazil, they are at the same price.

Now for what I need them: I'm a game dev and I study and plan to work with Unreal Engine and Blender. I don't care about IA, but I prefer DLSS over FSR.

This is my PC currently:

i7 12700f
GTX 1070
32gb RAM
B660M Plus D4
650w MSI A650BN

I'm looking to buy a new GPU, PSU and 1440p monitor.
I also play mostly singleplayer story games + PUBG.

I know the 16gb VRAM is better, but the nvidia tech looks better for UE and Blender, right?
What would you choose in this scenario?

Build Complete Just finished upgrading my build

Upvotes

I haven't upgraded my pc since I built it so I decided to upgrade. Over this year I've upgraded from an i5-9400f and an rx580 8gb to a Ryzen 7 7700X3D and a Arc b570.

I know the bottleneck is crazy but with the recent newegg combos it became the cheapest way to upgrade to AM5.

Build Help Is 100$ more worth it for a 9850X3D compared to a 7800X3D?

Currently looking at the AMD bundles at Microcenter and have been seriously considering the 700$ 7800X3D+mobo+32gb ram. However, they also offer a bundle for an extra 80$ for the 9800X3D and 100$ for the 9850X3D. Would the jump up from the 7800X3D be worth it for the 9800 and 9850X3D CPUs? Im currently planning on building the PC with a 9070XT whenever I can snag one but I dont think I would be CPU bottlenecked in either case. Thanks so much in advance!!!

Edit 1: Thanks so much to everyone for your helpful comments! Ill try and respond to everyone when I can. To answer a couple questions, Im gaming at 1440p. I mainly use this machine for gaming, with a little bit of working on the side. I currently have a Ryzen 5 1600 so any of these will blow it out of the water. Thanks again so much!!!! <3333

Troubleshooting Anyone have good workaround for linux/steamOS not detecting motherboards wifi?

Upvotes

Built a homemade steam machine so am on SteamOS, and works great, but it cannot detect any wifi, and I assume the motherboards wifi is just not detected by steamOS. (had to buy a usb wifi stick to get past the initial set up, but want the actual built in wifi to work if I can.)

am using Asus Rog Strix x870-i motherboard with AMD RX 9070 XT card.

All the website drivers and bios/firmware are all .exe's (SteamOS is Arch Linux...)

I'm still learning the ways of linux, but can't seem to figure out how to get the proper drivers working.

Any fellow linux PC builders find ways around this issue?

Build Help Help me To buy a computer

Upvotes
  1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using:

- Heavy coding and software development (Python, scripting, data manipulation).

- Android app development (running Android Studio and multiple Android Virtual Devices/emulators).

- Tech-related research, learning, and running local development servers.

- No heavy gaming planned, but the PC needs strong multi-core processing power for compiling code and heavy multitasking.

  1. What is your maximum budget?

- ₹75,000 INR (Flexible if a slight increase yields a massive performance jump for Android development).

  1. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?

- The entire setup: Complete Tower (CPU, GPU, Motherboard, RAM, SSD, PSU, Cabinet) plus a good quality Monitor. (Peripherals like keyboard and mouse can be excluded or kept basic).

  1. If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing?

- None. This is my first desktop computer. I only have prior experience with an entry-level laptop.

Build Upgrade Do i need a nvme heatsinc?

Hey!

I have a pretty beefy pc ( Asus Rog G700)

Specs:

ultra 7 265F

Asus Prime Rtx 5080

Adata Legend 860 ssd 2TB

My problem is that when installing games on steam, the disk speed drops after 5min.

I checked and its due to thermal throteling.

I disabled disk indexer for steam folders.

My motherboard doesn t have any heatsink for the ssd(just the small plastic factory heatsinc)11, but i don t want to void the warranty.

Question:

Can i / do I need to add a heatsink to the ssd? Will it perform better?

( I tried configuring the airflow, but didn t help much)

Can you recommend heatsincs for this model?

Thanks for the replies!

Discussion Upgrading Advice from AM4 to AM5

Looking for some upgrade advice, all help is appreciated!

Current PC:
Ryzen 5 5500
RTX 3060 12GB
MSI B550-A PRO (AM4)
64GB DDR4
850W PSU
Gaming at 1440p, 180Hz

I found someone online looking to sell his 32GB of DDR5 Corsair Vengeance, a Ryzen 5 7600X3D, and a Gigabyte b650 Eagle AX for $700.

I’m finding that certain games I’m playing max my CPU and give me bad 1% lows, and I’m not looking to spend $500 CAD on 5800x3d or $250-$300 CAD for a 5500x3d on AliExpress when it locks me into AM4.

I’m also torn on spending such a high price on AM5 ram, but I know I’m going of eventually make the jump.

The AM4 board and 64GB of DDR4 would go into my ladies PC, and I’d sell her Ryzen 5 3600 and B450M DS3H to recoup some cost,

Any feedback is amazing, thank you!

Build Upgrade Should I buy an RTX 5070?

I know upgrading right now might not be ideal, however I'm still young, live with my mom and don't really have anything else to spend my money on. So I think upgrading rn would be the best idea for me considering the fact that nobody can predict wether the prices are going down in the next few years.

I know that upgrading to a 5070 might seem a bit overkill, but I think/hope that my pc can handle it if I also upgrade my PSU and CPU. However I would prioritise the PSU and upgrade my CPU in the future.

Btw my pc knowhow is basically non existent so if this whole Idea is bs please let me know

(PS: Sorry if my english is bad, it's not my first language )

My current specs are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Prozessor

Motherboard: ASUS Prime B550M-A

Ram: Crucial Ballistix 8 GB (x2)

Storage: Toshiba P300 1 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive

Storage: Kingston A2000 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT

Case: Hyte y60

PSU: be quiet! System Power 11 ATX 3.1 450W

Monitor: AOC C27G1 27.0" 1920 x 1080 144 Hz Curved Monitor

Build Upgrade 7800xt vs 9060xt what’s worth buying in 2026

Hi guys so my 6750xt is slowly dying so I’m In search for a new gpu but I have no clue which to pick

9070xt is way out budget with used being almost same price as new

I’m playing mostly playing competitive cs2 or cod, got an 420hz monitor and 1080p ips

I would want an gpu that’s lasting atleast another 2-3 years preferably even more since I wanna buy an ryzen 7 5800x3d until am6 comes out

Currently rocking an cheap 5 5600 and 750w gold power brick with 32gb 3200 cl14 ram

I do play sometimes racing games or open world etc on my big 4K tv but not much

Online both the 7800xt and 9060xt are around 300ish

With the cheapest 9060xt 320 in my city and the cheapest 7800 for 350

Thanks for all you guys opinions in advance

Discussion Mixing amd and nvidia for simulations

Upvotes

So I use a radeon 9060xt 16gb as my main for everything, and I upgraded from a 2060. I recently started simulating things in mujoco but want to use graspgen which needs cuda cores. Is it possible or does anyone have any information if I can just use both in my computer but use the nvidia card specifically for graspgen?

Is there any solution for this? I was using it on a wooden desk then later on a mousepad, then i found that the part around the sensor lost it's glossy material and just became rough so the mouse is not gliding smoothly

Any help is appreciated.
