The Kentucky legislature took the power to call special elections away from him as soon as he came in to office
59
u/MrFC1000 3h ago
No they took away his power to appoint a replacement, which is still dubious because that’s in the KY constitution. The method he can use is calling a special election.
69
u/Left-Mechanic6697 3h ago
Exactly. Here’s where democrats really need to take a page out of the GOP playbook. Do the thing anyway, let the Kentucky GOP file a lawsuit, and make the courts determine if it’s within their power to do it without amending the state constitution.
37
u/cutach133 3h ago
YES, this is what needs to happen. I'm not saying we should stoop down and play dirty like the GOP but Democrats need to at LEAST start playing the same fucking game!
If this was a state with a GOP Governor and a Dem Senator I can promise you the Gov would've already done EVERYTHING he could to appoint a new Senator.
WHYYYY are Democrats so weak and ineffectual? The GOP has gotten where it is because Democrats REFUSE to do anything except try to keep the status quo, we are WAY beyond status quo at this point and they still do nothing. This is why I'm voting straight DSA from now on.
15
u/Any_Counter_303 2h ago
You haven't caught on yet? Really? They're aren't weak and ineffectual. They're controlled opposition. They all work for the same billionaires.
4
u/Shot_Fan_9258 2h ago
I'm pretty sure most of the current elected officials are complicit of everything that's happening, independently of their party.
For the dems, it's even easier; do as less as possible.
→ More replies (1)2
u/catatonic_welder 2h ago
Why voting doesn't matter, whoever gets in office will inevitably be bought out, regular people will never have the funds to match the ultra rich.
7
u/MadeByTango 2h ago
Incorrect. Vote for candidates that do not take corporate dollars. Mamdanis and AOCs.
And then stop worrying about the ad money. What candidates need is travel money and the ability to connect supporters. We can be the infrastructure to help that. The only reason the rich win the money game is because they make you think it takes money to win.
We have way more people power than they have money.

This is the most defeatist and frankly bot sounding post ever. Vote against big money in politics. We need to dismantle citizens united. Money isn't speech and corporations aren't people.
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_NICE_EYES 27m ago
I think the whole "why doesn't Bashear appoint someone" line is being pushed by people who want to make the Dems look bad.
Bashear won't appoint someone because it's bad for the Democrats plain and simple. The new appointee is required by law to also be approved by the republican party of Kentucky so you're functionally giving republicans an extra vote in the United States senate while also breaking the law.
But because people want to portray the democrats as Weak reddit comments that act confused as to why he isn't doing this get upvoted.
Like seriously, what do you gain if Bashear appoints a republican senator to congress?
1
u/adirtysocialist- 19m ago
"Make the dems look bad" hahaha christ this country is cooked.
The GOP is run by a fcking pedo cult destroying and grifting this country into the ground and you idiots are worried about the Dems "looking bad" by actually doing what needs to be done.
Insane take.
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_NICE_EYES 17m ago
How is this an insane take?
I simply don't want the Pedo party to get another vote in the senate unlike some people in this thread.
1
u/Beard_o_Bees 2h ago
Yup.
Ask for forgiveness, not permission. That should be on the GOP's 'coat of arms' in Latin - Veniam pete, non permissionem - (used a translator for this so it may need tweaking).
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_NICE_EYES 33m ago
The thing is tho:
Appointing a new senator would actually end up hurting Democrats more than Republicans.
The way the appointment process would work is that the Republican party would give the governor a short list of 3 candidates and the governor picks from those 3.
So the governor would have to appoint a republican to the senate, which functionally gives the republicans an extra vote (since McConnell hasn't been voting).
And in the long term, the next governor of Kentucky is probably going to be a Republican, having a special election makes it much easier to get a democratic senator in in the rare even that the next senator from Kentucky passes.
1
u/adirtysocialist- 25m ago
Democrats are controlled opposition, when is that finally going to sink in with you people?
This "pretend to have no power" and "they go low we go high" nonsense is all show. They don't WANT to do what needs to be done.
7
u/standard-issue-man 2h ago edited 2h ago
He should appoint someone anyway, make a whole media story about it, get Republicans on the record saying he cant do that so he can call on them to call a special election. He's losing the momentum and the Republicans are going to get away with this because of more Democratic fear of confrontation
2
u/Unlikely-Key-234 1h ago
which is still dubious because that’s in the KY constitution.
Not exactly. What's in the KY constitution is the ability to fill statewide KY offices. It doesn't specifically mention federal office, like US Senate.
40
u/MetaCardboard 3h ago
Didn't Colorado or Wisconsin or something do something similar? Republicans took away power from the office as soon as they knew it was going to a Democrat.
39
u/WallStreetBagholder 3h ago
That’s what republicans do. They can’t win elections or have power without changing the rules and taking power away from the people

Not dead, but I’m assuming severe dementia or loss of cognitive function that would render him unable to perform.
17
u/Left-Mechanic6697 3h ago
I believe he’s alive, but only technically. My guess is he’s a vegetable hooked up to life support until they’ve stalled enough. Then they’ll pull the plug and let him die.
If he were as able-bodied as those doctored PR photos make him look, a quick press conference, or a zoom call with the governor would quickly put the matter to rest. But they aren’t doing that and it speaks volumes.

u/Unlikely-Key-234 1h ago
Personally I think he's awake, but his brain is toast to the point that he can't form a sentence. If he were in a vegetative state hooked up to machines then that would mean the photo they released was fake, which no reputable organization is claiming, and in my opinion would have been a wildly unnecessary risk for them to take. Not saying it's above them to fake a photo, but I just don't think the risk vs reward calculus was there for something so likely to blow up in their faces.

u/Synensys 3h ago
Then the worst case scenario is that a Democrat holds the seat until January 3, which is functionally the same as the seat being open.
1
u/NEWSmodsareTwats 2h ago
that still doesn't make much sense because even if that did happen, whoever wins the special election will be out of office on January 3rd 2027. and whoever wins the November 2026 general election would take over at that point. whoever would win special election like this would not automatically be awarded the next term as well. they would only fill in till the end of the current term.
1
u/igen_reklam_tack 1h ago
Considering how fast the current administration moved last year after Trump's election I think you're ignoring how much could get done in that time with a noncorpse in office.
1
u/NEWSmodsareTwats 1m ago
I mean Even if the special election was filed today, it would take about 60 days for the election to happen and then there's also the few days it takes to get seated. So whoever would win and given the recessed Congress takes in Q4 they would likely only attend about 40 days of actually being in Congress. And from there it's just a single senate vote so assuming that a progressive Democrat is elected, which is very unlikely considering that senatorial seat is up for election in the 2026 election and currently the Republican candidate has an 11-point lead over the Democrat candidate, there's still little that candidate can do. Especially given senate Democrats are not exactly one seat away from having a majority or being able to pass their own legislation. Republicans do need mitches vote to help get things passed but while he's in the hospital he's also not able to actually vote in the senate.
The weekend at Bernie's game seems to be a weird one to play here at it comes with all the consequences and basically no benefits because even the worst case scenario for Republicans has no effect on this session of Congress but being caught playing hide the dead senator comes with a lot of consequences.

Democrats get my vote because they're not the fascist party, they otherwise get only my contempt.

I thought the logic was to wait until a certain day then it would trigger an election, but if he died now e.g. it was announced he was dead, the governor would appoint a replacement. Mark Aug 4th on your calendars ad McConnel day.
