Discussion Recluse fear and pest control response

EDIT: Not a recluse, my bad, thanks all!

Hello! I found 3 brown recluse spiders on the exterior windows of my house in the woods in Alabama. I called my pest control company and they want to spray for everything out to 30 ft from the house with the intent of eliminating the food source. I live in the woods and get all kinds of cool bugs and useful spiders. I see two problems with that: 1. It would kill a lot of stuff I like to see, and 2. Bugs would certainly come back and the recluses would have a food source again quite rapidly.

I've seen some stuff saying that recluse bites are both more rare than people think and less serious than people think, but it also said that the main demographic where a systemic response that could cause death is in young children. I have an infant. https://extension.psu.edu/brown-recluse-spiders

My question is this: what can I do to reduce the risk of recluses inside and clear them away from the house that isn't nuking everything from orbit? I have delta dust that I used to spot treat wasp nests in the attic when they were getting aggressive and territorial. Would dusting all the recluse webs that I can find to eliminate babies do anything? I imagine there are more that I can't find. Would dusting the crawlspace and/or walls and attic be a useful preventative? I think I'm going to put down sticky traps inside to see if they're in the house. Would clearing out the garage make that a less inviting staging area? (I haven't seen any there yet, but I haven't looked that hard)

Are there other resources I can read to help decide how bad it is to have these things running around outside? Whatever I do I'll need to have my wife's buy-in so arguments and angles I haven't considered would be helpful.

Thanks!

Discussion What is a common whitish spider in SoCal?

I'm starting to think this is not a coincidence..... is this a sign? Lol

I've had this car for 3 years fresh off the lot and I noticed white spiders crawl across my windshield this week when I'm driving, and now see a spiderweb on my right view mirror which was the same story with my previous car (a 2008) that was passed down to me!!!

Is there a common light tan maybe white looking spider in southern California??

I managed to draw the spider and it was very copper looking but it was very spotty and had a white sorta split hourglass on the abdomen, a very round abdomen too. I'd like to get it identified as it was very cool looking. Sad we crushed it:<

I apologize for this awful photo. I just want to make sure he wasn't venomous. I feel kinda bad for killing him but he scared the hell out of me! He's a bit smaller than a nickel maybe for size reference when his legs were extended. Not tiny, but certainly not huge. I checked with a flashlight.. no red mark anywhere on the abdomen area. There is a brown streak across the legs, otherwise he is pure black. I have never seen one of these in my apartment before! I usually just see those tiny brown house spiders. I'm in Georgia in the USA. Any ideas? I don't think it'll be an easy ID considering I killed him with a book 😭 so sorry about that to anyone who is a spider lover!

Discussion Can I feed it?

This spider has been in the vicinity of my patio door for at least a week now. I often have houseflies in my kitchen, but not in this area. When I swat the flies, can I feed them to the spider somehow? Do they accept already dead meals?

Just came across a new friend while mowing my grass. Probably not more than 1 inch long. Not worried about him being medically significant, I just wanted to know how to properly address Gerald (or Geraldina if female) as I get familiar with my new neighbor. Thanks!

ID Request- Location included Can marbled orbweavers look like this or is this book just wrong?

Post image

i hope this is the right tag?

i don't want to pretend like i know more than i do, i am very new to the whole spider thing in the first place, but the spider on the picture looks like a cross orbweaver to me. From what i can figure based on images online, marbled orbweavers have damn near entirely spherical abdomens and are more orang, plus this lady straight up has the cross

It is a book about what spiders the author observed in slovakia, so likely found there (central europe)

adding onto this, is it reasonable to assume that all orbweavers that have that cross are cross orbweavers, even if they are way gray-er?

Miscellaneous i think a spider i killed bit me THROUGH the paper towel, can they do that?

there was a small blackish/brownish spider in my bathroom that I crushed with a paper towel. it hopped away to dodge at first, but i got it second try. but i swore i felt it bite my pinky finger through the towel when i crushed it, that or it had a fat little body, lol. i don't really know how to identify spiders, but based on the above description, do you think it was dangerously venomous? it has never occurred to me that something like that could be possible.

EDIT: ok, reading the comments, i think i'll just avoid trying to kill/crush spiders from now on. better safe than sorry. also, i'm aware that i came on a spider subreddit saying i killed a spider, i expected people to be upset, no hard feelings towards any of you.

I have two recordings. The first was July 2nd and the other is tonight. The bigger Spider is a known
resident just to the right of my front door. It’s been there for several months. Idk if the smaller one is the same one in both videos.

In the first video I thought they were very dead. The day after I realized that wasn’t so, for our door resident was very much alive when I left for work in the morning.

After seeing this “dead” state again tonight, I’d thought I’d ask if this were normal. Do they typically act dead when mating? I’ve only noticed the smaller spider close by when the larger looks dead. I lightly tapped on the upper web to see how if they responded, and they did.

She was in the garage, hid from me and balled up when I captured her. She’s way more scared of us than we’re scared of her😭 I’ll be relocating her to a nearby trail with very low foot traffic to live her peaceful life.
