Event Interested in a weekly 8-a-side football game in Sheffield? ⚽

Hello,

I’m looking at starting a weekly Thursday evening football session at The Wave (University of Sheffield) on the astro turf pitches.

The aim is to create a well-organised, friendly and reliable game for beginner to intermediate players. I’m not looking to attract semi-pro or really high-level players, I’m just after people who enjoy football, know the basics, and want a good game without taking it too seriously.

Details:
The Sheffield Kickabout
📍 The Wave, University of Sheffield (Astro Turf)
📅 Every Thursday
🕕 6:00–8:00 pm
💷 £6 per player
👥 16 players (8 vs 8)

Format:
⚽ 50-minute game
💧 10-minute drinks break
⚽ 60-minute game

The sessions will be organised with:

• Balanced teams
• Players generally playing in their preferred positions
• Fair timed goalkeeper rotation (unless someone wants to stay in goal)
• Games starting on time
• Friendly, respectful atmosphere
• Equipment such as balls and bibs provided

The goal is to build a regular group where everyone gets a good game every week without the usual chaos of casual kickabouts.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, comment below or send me a message. If there’s enough interest, I’ll set up a WhatsApp group and get the first session booked soon.

If other days and times are preferred by participants, please do let me know.

Women’s-only football:
If there is enough interest, I’d also be happy to organise a separate women’s-only session for those who would feel more comfortable playing in that environment. If that’s something you’d be interested in, feel free to message me.

Thanks all.

Question Henderson's crisps in person

We recently came across Henderson's crisps in a pub and they're great. We're meeting some pals and wanted to share - is anyone aware of somewhere to buy the big packs in person in Sheffield?

I absolutely love it up Parkwood springs the views are amazing. I really don’t know why but I can never fully settle, there is something eerie about the place and I can’t put my finger on it. Does anyone else experience this?

Question Me the wife and fringe

Just sat here discussing our plans for fringe and I mentioned going to the new places (that have opened this year) which we haven’t had the chance to go to yet. Can anyone recommend any of the new ones eg Watt.

We haven’t got a real plan so open to suggestions.

Event Steel City Writers' Circle - this Sunday

Upvotes

Hi all, you may have seen one of my previous posts already but if you haven't, I'm running a writing meetup every other Sunday. The idea is to meet up in a coffee shop and work on whatever you want - fiction, poetry, journaling, essays, whatever. We're not setting any exercises, you don't have to share at the end, it's all super low-key and no pressure.

If you're like me and find yourself doomscrolling instead of writing then it's a really helpful tool to keep yourself on track, and also an infallible excuse to indulge in coffee and cake.

It's this Sunday (26th) at Hygge Thirty Two on Eyre Street (opposite Decathlon) and it starts at 11. We usually stay until around 1-1:30, but no worries if you need to arrive later or leave early.

I've also started an Instagram if that's an easier way for you to keep track - https://www.instagram.com/shefwriters/

Sheffield Water tasting off with a gritty feeling on my teeth

I'm in S2. Water from the cold tap this afternoon has had an awful taste and leaves a gritty feeling on my teeth afterwards.

Is anyone else having similar problems? There's nothing in Yorkshire Water's website.

Question Moving to Sheffield in sept

Hello everyone!

Seeking your opinion and advice. I’m moving to Sheffield to continue my studies (masters) in September. I am an international student I lived in England before for about 4 years. Mainly in the south of England.

I would appreciate any advice on good areas to find accommodation in.

Things I want to clarify:
- I am not looking for student accommodation, I will be looking into apartments as my choice of accommodation.
- my budget is around maximum £1000 pounds (I’d prefer it if it’s less to be comfortable with my spendings)
- I’m looking for safe areas (I did my research and I am aware that Sheffield is a safe place what I mean by this is a safe area to be comfortable enough to walk in at night when needed - obviously being cautious comes with any place you live in)
- I have never visited Sheffield so I don’t know much about how close certain places are to the university of Sheffield but I would prefer somewhere relatively close I think anywhere that I can walk from for about 15-20 mins is perfectly reasonable. I am an active person and love walking so I would love to have walking as my main form of transport!

Thanks in advance for any responses I get.

Question Where can I get John Smith's Magnet?

A mate of mine raves about this beer and how it used to taste. Does anyone know any pubs which sell it? The closer to the centre the better!

It's not the normal John Smith's, it's stronger (4%) and darker.

Question Any leaseholders in here have experience with Fairways property management?

I'm looking to buy a flat in town and one that I like is in a building managed by Fairways. The reviews do not paint a pretty picture, but I feel like people are more likely to leave reviews like that when they are angry as opposed to when they are happy or content.

Sheffield New to Sheffield and looking to make friends 29 M

Hi everyone,

I've just moved to Sheffield after spending 11 years living in London. I'm originally from Doncaster and moved to London for university - I enjoyed my time there, but eventually came to feel my life hadn't really changed and I hadn't grown much as a person, well, not in the last five or so years anyway. I'd spent the past several years going in circles, achieving very little, and I wasn't happy with that. I turn 30 at the end of this month, so wanting a kind of new start I decided to move to Sheffield, somewhere I'd spent a decent amount of time in my teens and knew I liked. It seems like a more simple, less stressful way of living here.

Thing is, I know nobody in Sheffield. I have a friend in Nottingham, but no one closer. I live alone, so I'm actively wanting to meet new people - guys and girls, I get along with pretty much everybody! I'm ideally looking for people aged 24-34 who I have at least a few things in common with. My interests include cinemagoing (I try to go at least once a week), films of the 1950s/60s/70s, reading and dogs. I work freelance in entertainment journalism - something I'm thankfully able to do wherever I live - and am in the early stages of planning a book about film censorship in the UK in the 1990s. I do drink, but am not a heavy drinker.

I'm not really wanting to go to group events etc to meet people - I find those things kind of forced, like you feel you need to make friends there even if there isn't anyone you'd normally be friends with.

Question Anyone landboard /kite surf?

Hi everyone.

I'm looking to start landboarding / kite surfing. Anyone in Sheffield know of any tutors or groups that can help beginners?

I don't have a car at the moment, or the equipment, but that'll change soon. I'm happy to hire / contribute to petrol if anyone can offer a lift to training locations etc.

Thanks!

Question Students: are there any societies still running activities throughout the summer?

At Uni of Sheff, or Hallam provided they allow UoS students. I’m so bored.

The handful that I’ve checked have stopped activities until Sept.

Question What’s happening with Birds Yard? Is it open now?

Last time I checked on Google it said permanently closed, but now it has active business hours? I tried to stop by today because it said it was open and I was in town but the shutter was down.

Has anyone seen it open recently? I also got an advert on Facebook for it recently so surely it is open at least sometimes?

Anyways I had a lovely experience browsing at 7th Magpie instead, highly recommend :)
