🔬 Participants wanted for my MSc dissertation at Sheffield Hallam University!

Hi everyone,

I’m a strength and conditioning coach and MSc student at Sheffield Hallam University, and I’m currently recruiting participants for my dissertation. I thought this community might find the project interesting.

The idea is fairly simple. A 1RM back squat is considered the gold standard for measuring maximal strength, but it’s fatiguing and isn’t always practical to perform during the competitive season. My research is investigating whether a joint angle-specific isometric squat test can accurately predict a person’s 1RM back squat using a much lower-fatigue protocol.

What’s involved?

  • Two laboratory visits at Sheffield Hallam University, separated by 48-72 hours
  • One session involves a 1RM back squat with velocity tracking (GymAware)
  • The other involves maximal isometric squats on dual force plates (Hawkin Dynamics) at three different knee joint angles
  • Session order is randomised

What you’ll receive:

  • Your verified 1RM back squat
  • Peak force data from the isometric testing
  • An individual strength profile based on your testing results

Eligibility:

  • Aged 18–35
  • At least 1 year of resistance training experience
  • Back squat of at least 1.5× bodyweight (male) or 1.3× bodyweight (female)
  • No lower-limb or spinal injuries within the past 6 months
  • Based in, or able to travel to, Sheffield

The project has taken months to develop, from the initial proposal and ethics approval through to pilot testing, so it’s great to be collecting data finally.

If you’re interested, know someone who might be, or have any questions about the protocol or study design, feel free to comment or send me a message.

📧 [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

Thanks!

Title: Struggling to Find Student Accommodation in the UK – Is Anyone Else Facing This?

I'm an international student preparing to study in the UK, and I'm finding it really difficult to secure student accommodation. Many places are already fully booked, while the remaining options are either too expensive or seem unreliable.

I'm starting to feel a bit stressed and was wondering if anyone else is facing the same issue.

If you've already found accommodation, I'd really appreciate it if you could share:

Which website or platform you used.

Whether university accommodation or private housing is a better option.

Any tips for avoiding scams.

Affordable accommodation recommendations for students.

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly help. Thank you!

I have been offered a place for the above course to start this September, super excited.

I was just wondering if I could get some insight into the course timetable for this year/previous years. I am a mature student with a toddler so trying to get my ducks in a row childcare and work wise.

replacement tenant urgently needed Sheffield, move in on or after September (The Forge)

Hello, I'm looking for someone to take over my tenancy at The Forge student accommodation (managed by Homes for Students). It's for a Premium En-suite room in a shared flat, which means you get your own private bedroom and personal en-suite bathroom, while sharing a spacious kitchen and living area with flatmates. It is £120 a week, and the contract starts this September. The location is amazing—it's right on Boston Street, placing it less than a 15-minute walk from the University of Sheffield and a short walk to both of Sheffield Hallam's campuses (City and Collegiate). It's perfect for students at either uni, and the city centre is just minutes away so you don't need to spend much on travel. The building has great social spaces, an on-site gym, a cinema room, a courtyard, a games lounge, and laundry facilities. It is very poular among sheffield hallam students.

Im a prospective UOS student and picked the forge as it was cheap but have changed my mind now, If anyone wants the room please dm me and ill transfer you over to the homes for students so you can have the room.

Students needed for a surprise

Hi! I am a producer and I wanted to reach out to enquire whether you could help me. I am looking for students that may be interested in taking part in an upcoming shoot with KISS Radio and Mentos on Friday 15th May 2026.

KISS and Mentos would love to reward hard‑working students during exam season with a fun surprise, designed to keep them motivated and celebrate their efforts so far. As part of this, we will be hosting a study session at a local library and would like to invite your students to attend and revise as normal. After a period of studying, we’ll then reveal our surprise.
We would be very grateful if you could help circulate this opportunity to your student community, or alternatively put me in contact with someone who would be best placed to do so. Depending on demand, we may need to limit the number of participants.
All participating students must be aged 18 or over and will be asked to sign a release form allowing their image to be used in video content published across Bauer Media’s social channels, including KISS Radio’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/playkissuk/.

Thank you very much in advance for any support you’re able to offer

How accepting or open is Sheffield Hallam university? I really do hope that I will be offered an interview and get accepted for the degree, planning to apply for a nursing degree at foundation level. I understand they aren’t Oxford but is SHU still hard to get into?
