Rant What do people in Herndon do for fun

Upvotes

Everything feels spread out and somehow simultaneously crowded. It's not like there's a downtown where everyone hangs out, but it's also not quiet enough to just enjoy the suburbs.

Every trip somehow involves getting stuck behind a landscaping truck, a school bus, and someone who waits a full calendar year after the light turns green before moving.

Question What are the seats like in Capital One Hall in Tysons?

Upvotes

Going to a Blippi show in November with my wife and 3 year old.

I have seats in center orchestra Row F 104-106.

My question regarding seats is do people need to stand up to let people pass?

Do they allow booster seats and is the seating sloped a bit like stadium?

Basically if my kid needs to get out can we move freely and can my son see the stage barring any tall giants sitting in front of us?

Thanks for your help

Question Best hard shell tacos in NoVa

Upvotes

My husband likes the good-old fashioned gringo tacos with hard shells. Most places, especially El Salvadorean, offer only soft tacos. We tend to avoid chains and like to support independent restaurants. Any ideas?

I think they like our yard because we've got a smorgasbord of pretty much every native and invasive plant/weed growing here.

Recently started working out in the Woodlawn/Mt Vernon area and am looking for a good auto repair place to take my car. AC just stopped working so that's my pressing need but in general, would love to find a place to take it for routine maintenance, etc on my way to/from work. Car's a 2012 honda civic.

Reston Target -- closing/remodeling?

Upvotes

I was at the Reston Target last night for the first time in awhile and some of the shelves were just completely bare. The Ulta section and the toys were what I noticed in particular. It looked like they were boxing up entire sections. Is it due for another remodel, or potentially closing? I feel like it had a remodel not so long ago.

Jobs How much would you charge a day laborer or teenager looking for summer work for this weed pull job? The yard is about 15 x 12 feet and I have a herniated disc.

I will also offer them plenty of snacks and cool filtered water.

But also, are you supposed to tip cash labor jobs?

How is Stoneridge at the Mark Center in Alexandria

I visited this place and it did not look too bad. The prices are really cheap and it’s close to where I work. Anything I should know about?

Community orchestra

Upvotes

Can any musicians on here recommend a casual community (ie. non-professional) orchestra to join? I’m a violinist who was once good (all-state musician, played through college, etc.), but now kind of stinks lol.

Specifically, I’m looking for something super low-key with minimal/no auditions and shorter rehearsals that is very convenient to Alexandria. I get terrible visual fatigue from music reading and night driving, so nearby and shorter rehearsals is key. I’d probably need to enlarge my music, but am happy to sit in the back with my own stand or memorize. Basically looking for a group to test this out with, since I haven’t played in an orchestra in years and not since my vision got flakey. I know there are a number of groups around, but given my limitations, recommendations appreciated.

Capital one pay?

Upvotes

Is Capital One in McLean the highest paying (cash comp) employer in the DMV?

I was casually looking and saw “Current Master’s - Data Science Internship…” offers $147k salary, of course that’d be prorated, but it implies the new Grad (Master grad) offer is at least $147k/year + sign on + performance bonus. If that’s how much new grads are getting paid, I can’t imagine how much C-level executives are getting paid!

What in the world?! Is there any other employer playing that much (or better) on cash comp in Nova?

Anyone know their interviews are?!

Question Carpet cleaners in Woodbridge-Lorton area for apartment?

Afternoon all,

We are moving out of our apartment in September. Only our bedroom has carpet, but our building is requiring us to hire a professional cleaning company before move-out. Naturally, they recommended a service, but I am wary because of the price. Can anyone recommend a good cleaner in the area at a competitive rate?

Question Good Toyota mechanic to get AC fixed?

Hello Novans,

My 2014 Toyota Prius C's A/C system has gone kaput. It blows air, but it's warm unless the temperature outside is also cool. Obviously, it's made driving during this summer absolute murder, but during the winter - my car also would have this burning smell if I turned the heat up.

Two shops I have taken my Prius to so far have quoted me $3K for getting the compressor/condenser fixed. Both of them refusing to really go into much detail besides there "being a leak". Freon doesn't work at all.

Apparently the part is hard to find for my kind of Prius. I'm looking for recs of either Toyota-specific mechanics or dealers or shops that would possibly quote me lower than the $3K. Them being honest and not going for the most expensive repair possible is a plus. Any other fellow Prius-havers in NoVA who've had the same problem?

Another Eastern Hercules Beetle Sighting

Forgot to post this when I saw this one morning on the way to work early in the morning. I have never seen an insect this big in my life. It didn’t move, but I was able to get a picture of it. After reading about these, I learned they are very rare and they can fly. All I know is if it started to fly, I would have ran into the street screaming LOL! For reference, it was about 3” long as you can see when compared to a large brick wall brick.

Salmon Curry Dish from Reading Terminal in Philly

Went to Philly this pass weekend and I had the salmon curry from Little Thai Market in Reading Terminal. Im looking for something similar because my toddler loved the dish.

Video of the dish:

Anyone know of a Thai restaurant around here that has something similar? Or, even better, does anyone know how they make it or have a copycat recipe?

Rant Ashburn has become a miserable place to be

I have worked in an office near the intersection of Loudoun County Parkway and Waxpool for about 5 years now and the area has become a hellscape.

We have trouble parking at our office now because of all the data center construction workers. There is endless traffic because there is always at least 1 lane closed on Waxpool for construction. The trees are gone. Other office buildings are gone. It is dystopian driving around here now. It's only a matter of time before our building gets torn down for another data center.

Any community that wants to see what life is like after data centers needs to spend some time here. There is no charm or any redeeming qualities over here anymore

Any leather stores?

Hi, I’m looking to make some crafts but when I google search leather stores, I mainly see shoe repair shops, western shops, leather goods, etc but I just need straight up leather cuts

It seems Bedo’s Leatherworks has some options, but the closest thing to what I’m looking for is Tandy’s Leather, which is all the way in Baltimore 😞 Would anyone know places in Nova?

Question Anyone know a gun shop that is still doing “assault weapons” transfer now that there is a state wide injunction?

I’m trying to get a buy a firearm out of state but it would fall under the assault weapons ban because it will hold more than 15 rounds.
