Virginia OAG wants the Lancaster case paused but says it won’t appeal the Washington injunction during the stay

Upvotes

Buried near the end of the plaintiffs’ new 58-page filing is a July 9 email from the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.

The OAG says that because Washington County already issued a statewide injunction, Lancaster does not need to expand its narrower injunction beyond the Virginia State Police. The email then says:

“We will not be appealing the Washington County injunction during the pendency of any stay.”

At the same time, the OAG wants the Lancaster case paused until SCOTUS decides Viramontes, rather than allowing it to move toward summary judgment and a final ruling under the Virginia Constitution.

My reading is that the OAG is willing to leave the temporary statewide injunction in place because the alternative could be worse for them: Lancaster could reach a permanent judgment striking down additional parts of the law, including the magazine, handgun, shotgun and public-carry restrictions that Viramontes may not decide.

There could also be a political or appellate benefit to delaying the case beyond January 31, 2027, when Justice D. Arthur Kelsey’s current Supreme Court of Virginia term ends. But that part is only a theory—the OAG filing does not say it is waiting for a change in the court’s membership.

The plaintiffs oppose the delay and argue that their case is already close to being resolved through summary judgment.

The email is in Exhibit C on PDF page 57.

Was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for any ranges within 45 mins of Mineral or Louisa Va? Looking to find a solid indoor/outdoor range, Green top is good but it gets really crowded unfortunately

The Trace: New Jersey Just Lost Its Assault Weapons Ban. Here’s Why That Matters for the Rest of the Country.

The ruling against New Jersey’s assault weapons ban is likely only the first, and could mark the beginning of the end for similar laws in nearly a dozen states.

Even if Democrats retake either or both chambers in 2026, or the White House in 2028, the issue is likely to remain on the back burner. Assault weapons bans haven’t even been adopted in every reliably blue state — only 11 states and Washington, D.C., have them.

It’s unclear whether rescinding the bans will cause an increase in gun violence — or mass shootings in particular

Mass shootings are a comparatively rare phenomenon, amounting to about 1 percent of all shootings, 3 percent of deaths from shootings, and 6 percent of shooting injuries since 2014.

The Supreme Court’s 2022 decisionin New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen was likely the death knell for assault weapons bans.

If the Supreme Court strikes down assault weapons bans nationwide next year, states could try other strategies, including putting semiautomatic rifles behind a permitting process.

any good places to shoot in the Northern Neck that don’t require a membership?

i spend a decent amount of time in the northern neck, and would love to to be able to shoot out there while I’m on vacation. unfortunately, most of the places we stay are not conducive to safe shooting (too close to other houses, too close to roads, too close to the water, etc)

i checked the list in the info section and saw Rappahannock Pistol and Rifle Club and the club in Middlesex, but the former requires a long vetting process while the former is not accepting new members

now when I lived in Farnham two decades ago, I had plenty of friends and acquaintances with land to shoot on, but I’ve since lost touch with most of them and the ones I have stayed in touch with have moved out of the area or out of their parents’ house and don’t have places to shoot anymore. and honestly I’d feel like a bit of a dick calling up one of the people who are still there all like “hey I know we haven’t talked in over a decade, but can I use your land to shoot?”

so what’s good? any nice outdoor/long ranges out there that aren’t closed to the public, or who have guest passes for a fee? and when I say northern neck I mean from like Hayes all the way up to Cole’s Point and all the way west to Tapphannock and Oak Grove

Best spot to buy magazines in Alexandria, or near it?

Hey all, MD resident here and I'm looking to buy some actual capacity magazines for some varied pistols I own. Typically, in California, I just went to gun shows and bought them there, but I'm wondering if I can reach out to a gun store near me and order them to pick up? I tried checking a couple spots but didn't see anything clearly explaining it -- so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks!

Question Good ranges indoor/outdoor Staunton VA area ?

Hello everyone! Is there any good ranges indoor/outdoor near Staunton VA? A coworker told me about Hite Hollow but said some people are pretty unsafe out there since it’s basically unattended. Most of the ones I’ve seen are clubs and it looks like you got to jump thru hoops to get in. Thanks !
