Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What brand of Kettlebell should I buy?

A: Before we can talk about brands, there are two types of Kettlebells we recommend: (1) Competition and (2) Cast iron.

Competition kettlebells keep the same shape/size across the weights and typically have a fixed handle size (33mm or 35 mm). They are primarily used for Girevoy Sport (GS) but can be used for other styles of kettlebell lifting. The downside to competition kettlebells is that they are typically more expensive than other types of Kettlebells.

Cast iron kettlebells were popularized by “hardstyle” kettlebell training initially by Pavel Tsatsouline. They are typically very cost effective compared to competition kettlebells. The upside is to cast iron kettlebells over competition bells is that they're typically smaller for weights under 28 kg. The downside is the handles and the bell itself increases in size as the weight goes up.

We do not recommend vinyl, plastic, or other kettlebells that are not cast iron and competition due to their durability and their ergonomics to do the common kettlebell ballistic exercises (swing, clean, snatch, etc).

For Competition bells, we recommend:

For Cast iron kettlebells, we recommend:

Due to community feedback from lack of stock and shipping issues, we currently do not recommend Kettlebell Kings.

Adjustable Kettlebells

In recent years, there has been a surgence of adjustable kettlebells in the market. In particular, a competition-style kettlebell that is able to be adjusted from 12 to 32 kg. The biggest benefit of these style kettlebells is that you have access to multiple kettlebell weights with the footprint of one. Most brands allow you to jump from 0.5 to 2 kg weight increments. We recommend the following brands if you want one:

EU recommendations needed here; comment if you have one!

Q: What weight of kettlebell should I buy to start out with?

A: For most men, a kettlebell between 16-24 kg is the most common recommendation. For most women, 8-16 kg. The recommendation depends on your prior fitness history. If you’re still unsure, make a post and be sure to include details about your training history!

Fellow moderator u/LennyTheRebel has made a more extensive write-up about choosing the best kettlebell weight for you here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kettlebell/comments/1j90tz1/picking_a_weight_as_a_beginner/

Q: What is a good free beginner routine for someone new to kettlebells?

A:  There are many beginner routines suggested on r/kettlebell, but we recommend the following:

Q: What are some good paid programs?

There are many paid programs, but we’ll list the popular ones here:

  • The Armor Building Formula by Dan John
  • The Giant by Geoff Neupert

Form & Technique

“Styles” of Kettlebell Training: Hardstyle and Girevoy Sport  (GS)

Before going into the two “styles” of kettlebell training, I want to make a point that kettlebell training styles do not need to have strict adherence to either styles. They are useful definitions to describe kettlebell training intent and don’t feel like you have to adhere to one of them completely when learning kettlebell exercises.

Hardstyle was popularized by Pavel Tsatsouline in the Late 90’s/Early 2000’s, forming Dragon Door (RKC) and later StrongFirst (SFG).  Hardstyle technique emphasizes a focus on maximal tension, explosive power, and force production. A byproduct of this is usually training at lower rep ranges for strength and hypertrophy goals.

Girevoy Sport (GS), also known as kettlebell sport, is older than Hardstyle, and has been a competitive sport in Eastern Europe and Russia since the late 1960’s. In the sport, the competitive lifts are the Snatch, Jerk, Long Cycle (Clean and Jerk). The competition format is a 10 minute set of one of these exercises for as many reps as possible within the time limit. Because of this, there is an emphasis on efficiency on the lifts, including changes on how a swing is performed, the rack position, and more, compared to hardstyle training.

On the subreddit you may see the term Hybrid style to describe technique. This simply just means adopting technique principles from both Hardstyle and GS.

Which exercises to learn first with kettlebells?

The “big 6” movements of kettlebell training you will see online are:

  1. Swing
  2. Squat
  3. Press
  4. Clean
  5. Snatch
  6. Turkish Get-up

Although you are free to learn them in any order, we recommend learning them in the order listed (or simultaneously with a focus on order).

Training terms (Reps, Sets, Complex, Chain, Flow, Ladder, etc)

You will see many training terms that are popular with kettlebells. You can read more about these in the wiki here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kettlebell/wiki/index/

Coaching / Personal Training

Although we cannot make specific recommendations on people, we recommend anyone interested in kettlebell training to spend some time with a trainer and/or kettlebell coach. This can be done in-person or virtually. There are many great coaches who hang out in this subreddit. Although we do not allow for explicit self-promotion, we encourage folks to reach out to coaches privately and get coaching from someone they’ve interacted with here in the community.

Hardstyle Coaching (Dragondoor, StrongFirst)

StrongFirst and RKC are the two oldest and well known hardstyle certifications. If you want to learn how to move kettlebells in the way they teach, they both provide search engines to find coaches in your area:

I couldn't find a similar "Find a Coach" option for IKFF and other GS organizations, so some help on this would be greatful!

Discussion I am confused by the physiques kettlebell training offers

Hi everyone, not a fitness expert so I’m confused by this:

I am seeing a lot of people rather skinny looking pressing 36/48kg bells, and others that are absolutely jacked lifting the same weights.

I could be wrong but I’ve never seen the same thing with say barbell lifters. Typically more weight on the barbell = bigger person.

So how does that work? Why are these people skinny looking (don’t look like someone that trains at all) while others are more muscular? Shouldn’t the kettlebell have helped build more muscle for them to be capable of generating that much power ?

Instructional Press cues that help

I made this tutorial for my job and I thought I’d post it here, too. These cues help you build tension in the right spots for press as well as getting you into the right position under the bell.
This is just a starting point. Pls don’t hurt me.

Hi 43 yr old female, beginner. Been messing around with this guy for about a week. The bruises are from learning snatch’s. Any tips for my swing? I’m using 15 and 20 lb bells to start coming from power yoga background.
I realize I probably need a heavier bell sooner than later but this is all I have for now.
Also, I’m in rehab for booze and that’s not my laundry.

Just A Post Stall mats ftw

Dropped a 24Kg KB during my last workout. Had been using cheap foam tiles mats from Walmart and the bell tore right through them. Fortunately the floor isn’t cracked and neither is the bell.

Decided to upgrade my space and went to Tractor Supply Company and got myself a 4’x6’ ¾” thick vulcanized stall mat for $55. Transporting /setting it up was not easy but I love it now. So much more durable than what I had before and for ⅓ of what Amazon would’ve charged for comparable flooring.

Sometimes I bang the outside of my left wrist. Had to record a few sets to find one where I do it. Most of my cleans are fine but sometimes I do something that I can't figure out myself. Only with the left arm, never the right arm.

Discussion What happened to Kettlebell Kings?

Did they go out of business? Their website has been down for at least a few weeks. Looking to buy a second pair of competition style bells and don’t see them anywhere. Amazon has one listing but doesn’t have an option to select weights.

100 SA Long Cycle workout with 36kg. no other rules. I liked this workout a lot, felt like I got stronger over the workout, and set a goal to do a workout that hits 200 SA long cycle with a 36kg within a few weeks.

Just trying to contribute back to this awesome community.

Advice Needed Kettlebell mobility programs

I've been training with kettlebells for a couple of years now, and my strength has increased significantly. However, my mobility still sucks. So I'd like to put strength training on the backburner for a while, and do some mobility training.

Some more specific goals:

(a) I still have to elevate my heels to squat deeply. I would like to fix this.

(b) My hamstrings, and my posterior chain generally, is very stiff. I would like to be able to do a good forward fold.

(c) I have some pain in my left shoulder. I don't know if this is caused by a mobility issue, but it might be.

Please recommend programs to me!

I'm interested in these:

Thanks in advance!

KB Picture Ready for my next set of Kettlebells, looking at REP

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi all, this is what I’ve been working with for about a month now. I’m still learning the moves and working on my form but am really falling in love with this type of training. These are pretty much local TJ Maxx/Marshals finds and have been OK so far, but my OCD is going crazy with this mismatched set, plus I wanted to use the kilogram standard that everyone seems to be using. I ordered up a set of 12/16/20 kg Ethos bells at from Dicks, but they arrived all beat up. The price was right and I was willing to look past the dings and marks, but noticed some minor rough spots on the handles and a barely noticeable seam. I felt that the rough spots would cause problems for me in the long run so I returned them. Is this common, is there a need to sand the handles down? I could have done that but the finish would be ruined. So now I am looking at REP bells, the price seems similar what I paid at dicks and they offer free shipping. Should I expect perfectly smooth handles, or am I just being too picky about these?

Edit: Sorry I realize there was already similar post on this. REP for the win!

Advice Needed Continuous HIIT style training that builds muscle

M, 24 y/o, 155lbs, 5'9'

I like the format of hiit training programmes like insanity where it's pretty much non stop for the full workout. I like the self regulating element in that you complete as many quality reps for time as you can as this way I feel confident that I can get the most out of the workout and naturally progress as I get stronger/fitter.

However, I would like to involve kettlebells so that I can build muscle as well as burning fat.

Does anybody have any recommendations to any YouTube workouts fitting this description that would help me to burn fat and build lean muscle? Or maybe a kettlebell programme that sounds as though it is geared towards my goals?

I don't like typical strength training and the rest periods take me out of the workout mentally and I find it hard to then get myself going again for the next set. If I don't enjoy my workouts I fail to build consistency. It would also be an added bonus if I was able to complete workouts on back to back days without needing to factor in rest days too much.

Building lean muscle definition whilst burning fat for a better looking and healthier physique is my priority, not so much building a lot of muscle mass and getting super strong.

Any recommendations are massively appreciated!

Note - I currently have 1x10kg, 2x16kg and 2x20kg kettlebells at my disposal and nothing else. Not looking to invest in any new equipment right now

Just A Post W7D2 ABF Single Bell

I’m near the end of the line with this rendition of the program and I love the single bell ABC ❤️. Pressing days I do variations of double 20’s, single and kneeling press.

On Monday I hit 100 double presses with 20s doing 2-3-5x10.

Today was single bell ABC and I’ve been doing the entire program with the 24. I did 30 minutes and was able to complete 17 rounds within that time. EMOM with the single bell is a bit of a tall order

Today, the 24 kg felt like it was getting lighter. I suppose that is a result of doing ABC single bell for 7 weeks. 17 rounds is a good amount of volume 68 presses and 68 squats.

I really enjoy the single bell and glad I chose to do it. So far this year I’ve run the 10k swing challenge, ABF with double 22’s and just about wrapped with ABF single bell. I think I prefer the single bell version to be honest.

For sure my follow up program will be ES4FL. I’ve yet to run that this year and going from ABF to ES4FL back to ABF at a higher weight from previous round of ABF seems like a practical strategy to round out 2026.

Just A Post Kettlebells in MMA training

I came across this older video of Dricus du Plessis (former UFC middleweight champ) training with kettlebells in the run-up to a fight.

Since the question has been asked on here a few times re what programs to use for MMA, I thought some people may find it helpful/interesting.

He mentions strength endurance and getting stronger without gaining more muscle a few times. As a 6ft 100kg dude he already has a lot of mass though. FWIW, his strength coach bases his training around SF principles.

The exercise selection is focused on a strong hip hinge with deadlifts, snatches (medium doubles and heavier singles), TGUs (looks like >40kg), double thrusters, weighted deficit push-ups, TRX rows, some single leg work and 5x5min on an assault bike, before sparring. In a follow-up video the guy filming the video is taught to do swings and appears to get it relatively quickly using the towel trick.

Advice Needed Unreal leg/quads soreness from jerk intervals. Is it common? Or am I doing something wrong?

My kettlebell training is mostly sets and reps or emoms of only the basic 5 exercises i.e. cleans, presses, snatches, squats and swings.

I have never done very high rep style workouts or GS style timed sets ever.

I was short on time yesterday and had only 10-15 minutes to train so I decided to do jerk intervals with double 24. This is my strict press 8-10 rm weight. So I thought that doing 5 jerks emom for 10 minutes should be manageable.

I was expecting it to be more of a conditioning challenege because I have never done something like this but today when I woke up my quads are feeling sore af lol.

I do a lot of cycling, can do overhead squats with 32 and multiple sets of 5 of front squats with double 28 so I thought that I have decent enough leg strength. I mean the numbers that I am lifting are not that crazy strong but not that bad or weak either.

Never knew that just 10 minutes of jerks would expose a weakness I never knew I had.

Massive respect to KB sport guys who can endure 10 minute continuous sets of long cycle and snatch.
