TARGETED TALKS 🎯 Collars - Do you need them? What are the best?

What is up everyone... Welcome to the Targeted Talk... where we take a topic pertinent to the home gym owner and do what we do best... spend way too much time thinking about and talking about it!

This week we are talking about Collars... Those little things you toss on the end of your barbell (sometimes).

There are a metric ton of these, available from VERY high end to VERY budget friendly. We have competition collars, fat collars, OSO collars, lockjaw collars, speed collars, metal collars, plastic collars, collars with magnets, collars with eye hooks and carabiners, and more.

The questions for today are...

1) Do you use collars? All the time? Just for certain lifts or maybe for the biggest sets?

2) If you do use them, do you have a favorite kind?

3) If you don't use them, why not?

Bonus Points for pics...

and.... GO!

Here’s my garage gym!
I’ve got the bug and not enough space 😅🤦🏼‍♂️
I’ve got a leg press coming which means the shoulders press will be demoted to my house in the spare room. It’s not got any fancy black paint or panelling but it gets the job done and enables me to spend more time with my people

These are all of my bars, I am missing one curl bar which im lending to someone right now, and the texas power bars are my father's. All of the rogue bars, as well as the titan safety squat bar and rep fitness trap bar I bought used. The 6 bars retail for $2,290. I bought them for around $560.

Home Gym Pictures 📷 My dream home gym built (almost) entirely from FB Marketplace 🔥

After being a member of the sub for years and dreaming about the day, I would finally have my own piece of iron paradise, it is finally complete.
To anyone who doesn’t already know, Facebook marketplace is THE BEST way to get the equipment that you want at a discounted price. You just have to be patient!
Here is everything I have in the Dungeon and what I paid ⬇️
-Rep PR-5000 with ARES 1.0 : $2800. yes, I know the Ares. 2.0 is an updated machine, but I could not pass up on this steal. 💪🏼

-Bolt Outlaw Leg Press/Hack Squat : $1200. This thing is a beast. I’m able to get Ass to grass on both movements and I’ve loaded up 7 plates on either side with zero issues. Highly recommend! 🔥

-Gronk Leg extension/Leg curl : $500. honestly, this thing is OK. It gets the job done, but suffers from the same issues that every plate loaded machine that’s designed like this will have. I will probably upgrade this in the future!

-Powerblock PRO 100 EXP : $800. Let me tell you I was a little bit wary about these dumbbells because everyone talks about the Reppins as the gold standard of adjustable but I LOVE these things! They are great if you’d like to do drop sets/super sets, and the best part is you don’t have to return them to a cradle to change the weight. If you’re in the market for an adjustable, I cannot recommend these enough!

-Schwinn Airdyne AD7 : $300 this was probably one of the craziest deals I found. This thing is over $1000 new, and the guy I got it from was only willing to sell it to me so cheap because he literally had a heart attack while using it last year and can’t stand to look at it now lmao

-Rouge Pritchett Pad : $150

-750 pounds of weight plates and a beater bar that I paid $600 for at an estate sale.

-Rep Nighthawk bench : $500 (retail)

-Double Black Diamond Powerbar : $300 (retail)

All in all, including some attachments I bought and stall mats from tractor supply, I paid about $7800 for everything. It was an investment, but I will have it for Life! I’m happy to answer any questions about anything in the comments below

Equipment ⚙ Added resistance bands to seated leg machine.

Less weight plate loading, very nice added resistance, cheap. Thanks to Mike on his Hybrid Resistance YouTube for his advice about resistance bands!

Also added that blue 11lb plate onto the peg to further raise the weight plate arm for increased resistance at the start of extensions or curls.

Thanks again to Mike for doing the video on this Everymate leg machine for $220. It has thick 2.5mm on heavy support tubing where it’s needed. Other brands only had 1.8mm steel tubes.

Hopping on, transitioning from extension to curls, really complements squats, deadlifts, leg press.

Love it. Love it even more with the resistance bands.

Equipment ⚙ DIY dumbbell rack

50 + lb dumbbells weren’t fitting well on my cheap-o racks and it became a safety hazard (they were falling off lmao)… facebook marketplace failed me and I didn’t want to spend $1k+ on a rack.

I’m not experienced with building at all, but these instructions were really easy to follow: https://www.kaizendiygym.com/diy/dumbbell-rack-v3

Slightly modified.. made it 8 ft instead of 6 so I added extra support in the middle. Around $120 in material. Going to make a second one soon so it matches!

I started building my home gym some months back. I’m still working on getting more stuff to have more complete options (I have already an adjustable bench)

I have some adjustable dumbbells I’ll improve soon on newer ones.

I’m lucky I have this bunker at home and plenty of space

Home Gym Pictures 📷 Couldn’t pass up the sickest deal I’ve ever seen…

Was surfing my neighborhood app and found an insane deal and had to jump on it.

  1. Rogue Monster Lite Squat Rack
  2. Rep flat bench
  3. Rogue barbell
  4. Rep EZ bar
  5. 240 lbs of hi temp bumper plates made in Alabama
  6. 10 lbs of Rep bumper plates
  7. 130 lbs of normal iron plates
  8. 8 horse stall mats

Total value is over $2,000, and seller was asking $600 for all. Didn’t even negotiate. Went over as soon as I could and loaded up. While I was there, I noticed a dumbbell rack with 5s - 50s hex dumbbells, and she offered it up for another $200. I’ll be picking that up tomorrow.

Find of a lifetime. Here it is set up in my garage.

DIY 🔨 Jammer arms with cable.

I hate removing the Maxim jammer arms. They are over engineered, crazy heavy for what they are. I wanted to return them but didn't have the package. So I came up with a solution.I wanted my jammer arms and cable trolleys on separate uprights. I wanted to use cables with the jammer arms. I made some hinged arms that act like a wall mounted squat rack to get the arms in and out of the way the added benefit is with the mutant arms from the maximum X3 I'm able to change the strength curve by adjusting the height of the mutant arms.

Picked up this Inspire FT2 yesterday for $450… no scratches, like brand new, cables smooth as butter

Came with the Inspire SCS bench, leg extension/curl attachment, preacher curl attachment, and a bunch of other Inspire cable attachments.

Had to pull out a few ceiling tiles just to get enough clearance to assemble it 😂. Going to clean it up and remove a few more so it looks nicer, but totally worth it.

Probably one of my best marketplace finds so far.

Hey guys. I'm a long time lurker. I've had the garage gym bug/addiction for about 20 years. "One more piece and I'll be done. I swear!" My wife has heard that more times than she can count. LOL

Well, here's what 20 years of home gym addiction will get you:

The underused room at the end of the hall in our basement. It's a difficult space because it has two doors, the breaker panel, and a low hanging duct, but I made it work. I hate staring at a wall that's only a foot in front of my face so I only work off the rear posts for bench and front for everything else. Garbage tv on the wall came with the house.

Surprisingly, I'm short enough that I can overhead press outside the rack no problem

Home Gym Pictures 📷 Finally got low profile spotters in for the Ares 2.0 (Steelstrong) (EU)

Finally got my weight horns and low profile spotter arms in from Swedish manufacturer Steelstrong Fabrication. Lovely chaps. Finish is quite rough but wanted something to match the clear coat Ares 2.0 and Black Wing and didn't want to pay import and shipping on Oak Club or Surplus Strength (and ordered these before the news came out regarding the new Rep spotters which are set to release). The 93" Ares is a super tight fit, but with the guide rods shortened 2" and the upper crossmember dropped one home and some shortened cables this has all the benefits from the larger 93" without having to go with an 80". Not bad for my basement ceilings.

Out of sight is the Rep Leg Developer that I am still trying out. On the peg board Bluslm clones, ATX Black Line v bar and curl bar.

Finally able to bench with the spotters on and the trolleys dropped all the way down.
