Happy Place in Toronto

Hello a few months ago I was visiting Toronto and asked about your happy place and got many answers. I spent the week visiting about 50 of them . I fell in love with Toronto again .

These “new” places you recommended were my favourite …
Ireland park, Toronto music garden , trinity bellwoods park, the beaches , cherry beach, sugar beach, mt pleasant cemetery trail, belt line trail , riverdale park east, sonic boom very cool, cabbagetown , Toronto public library, philosophers walk . Still have a few more parks to visit . Visited the outside of many of your happy cafes , bars, taverns and all looked very cool but was a little cash strapped to visit .

If anyone has other recommendations please let me know! Am here for another week

Why doesn't Toronto have pictorial cancels like Montréal?

I've recently been looking through Canada Post's list of pictorial cancels: https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/personal/pictorial-cancels.page

One thing that surprised me is that Toronto doesn't seem to have any Canada Post locations with pictorial cancels, while Montréal has several post offices that do—and some of them even have multiple different designs.

Does anyone know why that is?

Is there a historical reason? Is it because Montréal has a stronger philatelic tradition, or perhaps more influence from European postal culture? Or is it simply that no Toronto post office has ever applied to create one?

It seems like a missed opportunity. Toronto has so many iconic landmarks and neighbourhoods that could make great pictorial cancels, and I imagine they would be popular with both stamp collectors and tourists.

I'd love to hear if anyone has some background on how these pictorial cancels are chosen or why Toronto has so few compared with Montréal. Thank you!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the replies and discussion! I'm glad the post introduced you to something new. Unfortunately, because my Reddit account has low karma, my comments are being automatically removed by this subreddit. I can't reply to you individually, so I just wanted to say thank you here. I really appreciate everyone who shared information, ideas. To be honest, I didn't know about pictorial cancels either until recently. I stumbled upon this page (https://www.chuor.org/en/), which links to Canada Post's complete list of permanent pictorial cancels, and that's how I fell down the rabbit hole 😄

Stalker

My friend F has a stalker, someone who was in school with her 10 years ago.

She’s now been contacted by this person who’s being erratic. She’s not picking up his calls but he’s proceeded to call her dad, sibling, multiple friends and trying to contact her

She’s filed a police complaint but they’re being extremely lax about it. Said they’ll come by for a check if she asks them.

She does not know about his physical whereabouts either so she’s freaking out.

What’s the best recourse?

Edit: police asked to get final proof of contact after being requested to stop going forward before they look to a peace bond, and we’ll take it from there. Thanks everyone

sos - need a party room or rooftop event space

Long story short, the space that we had booked for our wedding reception is blocked due to maintenance related to hazardous substance leaking in the room. The alternate space the management is offering is really bad. So now we are looking for an event space or a party room in downtown Toronto or near oldmill - islington area on 26th July. Yes! this Sunday!

I cannot stress how worried we are since we have to update all guests, especially many who are travelling, and the decor and catering needs cancelling.

Looking for a rooftop party room, or a restaurant with a nice view that can host 35 people wedding reception dinner + dance party from 7-11pm on this sunday.

You can bring back one building/business/space in the city. What would it be?

Upvotes

I'll give you some examples:

- Honest Ed's

- Sunnyside Amusement Park

- Funhaus

- Imperial Pub

- The original Bata building

- The original Toronto Star building

- Crocodile Rock

- Brown Derby Tavern

- Sam's Record store on Yonge

The only rule is it can't be a larger chain like Zellers, Biway, Sears, etc.

Canada Post Red Mailboxes gone?

Is Canada Post phasing out all community mailboxes as well? I went to mail a postcard yesterday to find one red drop mail box is taps off and the other 3 in the vicinity are gone! That’s silly. At least 1 per neighborhood would be nice.

Did uber stop doing share rides?

Logged in this morning and didn’t take it anymore. I know it’s not in all cities wondering if others saw this too?
Not that I’d use this option much, it was getting ridiculous it would offer me a savings if $0.50 sometimes vs uber x.

Advice/support for homeless trans woman

I hope this is okay to post!

I don’t live in Ontario anymore but have a good friend there who recently became homeless. She’s a trans woman, 33 with no income and very little savings. She is working through a lot of mental health issues and is dealing with trauma and ptsd. She’s unable to work most jobs right now. She’s essentially couch surfing but it won’t last long and the one night she spent on the street was really awful, her phone got stolen and she almost got assaulted.

She’s in Toronto now and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any supports whether they be shelters, housing, food, etc. She has a therapist through a gender clinic that has been calling different shelters but wait lists are so long. I emailed an lgbt shelter for some resources but most of them are for people under 30. If you know of any supports for a trans woman over 30 it would mean a lot. She’s obviously in a low place and I don’t really know what to do for her. I don’t want her to lose hope so soon but her situation is obviously difficult.

Thank you!

Best Dried Fruit in the city?

Not just quality - but selection of stuff that might be more unique.

My go-to's have been the downstairs Italian place at the St Lawrence Market and Tavazo in Yorkville.

Fields

Hi, I'm looking to see if anyone knows of any open, empty fields in Toronto to just be alone and frolic in, preferably in Etobicoke. I was tempted to go into those huge fields blocked by Hydro One, but I know better lol.

Women's health walk-in clinic

Does anyone have recommendations for a good walk-in clinic or women's health clinic in downtown Toronto? I don't have a family doctor, and I'm not likely to get one anytime soon because it's so hard to find one accepting new patients.

I think I have a yeast infection after finishing antibiotics, but it's not serious enough to justify going back to the ER. I wanted to get an analysis before self diagnosing and taking an oral pill for it. I'm looking for a clinic where the doctors are kind, thorough, and don't rush patients. Any recommendations (or places to avoid) would be really appreciated!

Using coins ?

I have a bucket full of coins. In the past, I used to be able to find a machine in the supermarket that would take all my coins and print out a receipt to use to pay for groceries. I haven’t seen one of those in a while for some reason they aren’t the greatest deal since they charge about 20% of what they give you back. Does anyone know where I can find one of these machines or turn coins into paper money?

Alternative/Colourful wedding Dresses

Hey everyone!

I’m getting married in July 2027 and am on the hunt for a wedding dress.

I really love the Flora and Lane collection but they only have stores in Chicago and San Francisco.

Link of their website to see the vibe: https://www.floraandlane.com/unique-wedding-dresses

I’m wondering if anyone knows of a bridal boutique that has similar style or vibe in Toronto. I’m from Niagara region and options are super limited here. If I don’t find anything similar I’ll make the trip to Chicago.

I don’t know what style I will like on my body shape so I’d like to at least try on similar shapes or styles before making the trip!

Visiting Toronto! Help please!

Hello all!

-please let me know if this isn't allowed -

I will be attending a concert in August in the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto! I am from the US and will be driving there. If I could get any tips or tricks about parking around that area for the concert (@7pm).

All information is welcomed! Anything about places I should or shouldn't be, or what places I can park at for multiple hours would be wonderful!!!

I just want to enjoy a concert without getting a ticket or towed! Thank you!!! ❤️

R&D or Yueh Tung?

Hi! My husband and I (early 40s, live in a major U.S. city) are taking a short trip to Toronto this weekend, and after lots of restaurant research, we have narrowed our dinner choice down to either R&D or Yueh Tung for one of the nights we are in town. The other night we are having dinner at Alo, so for this night we wanted something a lot more casual and just completely different in terms of food. Any thoughts on which of these would be better? We’ve never been to Toronto before and both of these options look really good! Thanks in advance.

T&T's BBQ lamb with cumin recipe

I know this is a long shot, but does anybody know the spice rub recipe for the BBQ lamb with cumin sold at T&T's BBQ counter? That stuff is crack. It's not really the same as the BBQ lamb skewers you get at other restaurants.

First Time in Toronto

Good morning, Me and my Partner are heading to Niagara Falls in a month and we are going to spend a week or so in Toronto. I just have a few questions I was hoping you fine folks could answer. We are likely to stay in the downtown area.

Any hotel suggestions?

As Far as transportation should we look into renting a vehicle, or would a combination of public transport and ride share be enough? Keep in mind I'm coming from the States (Not those kinds of Americans, we hate the orange guy) would I even be able to drive with an American license.

My Partner is Vegetarian so restaurant recommendations for her would be nice though it doesn't have to be strictly vegetarian/vegan.

And any sites to see? We are planning to go to the distillery district, St Lawrence Market and Casa Loma and I guess that ties into the transportation above.

Thanks for any help. We would appreciate it and look forward to spending time in your fine city.
