The Maza Napin Dance Troupe at the Museum will perform from 5:15-6:15 PM with a dance performance. Founded by Parnell Necklace and his children, the family educates audiences about Indigenous culture through dance and demonstrations.

Umojah Nation, Northeast Ohio’s inspirational reggae band, will hit the stage from 6:30-8:30 PM.

Tl;dr: seeking recs from women and/or non-binary folks for a female (or non-binary) PCP in the area who is patient, caring, and provides great patient care!

Hello all!

I recently relocated back to the area and I don’t have a PCP here anymore. Without disclosing too much about where I live, I am about 10 minutes south of The University but I work in Copley/Fairlawn area so I don’t mind anything around Akron/surrounding areas.

I am neurodivergent (shout out to that late-in-life ADHD diagnosis) and I am seeking a doctor who is understanding and supportive of that. I am also a bit overweight and have anxiety and I am really looking for a doctor who isn’t judgmental and doesn’t just write off every health complaint on anxiety or “just lose weight.”

(For context: My last PCP was in a different state but she used to say that because I’m medicated, my “ADHD symptoms should be fine” but didn’t take a very holistic approach to my care and it felt much more of a dismissive “I’ve got to get to the next patient” vibe. I work in a hospital so I really don’t appreciate that. Really looking to avoid that.)

Also, nothing against male healthcare providers but I am just more comfortable seeing a female doctor if possible.

I would love any recs, my insurance is in-network with most major hospital systems around here, but I really would love to know if there are any primary care doctors that stand out around here!

does anybody have a lead on somewhere I could rent below $600 for utilities AND rent? I am out of my housing situation by September and just simply do not make enough between gas/insurance/food/ and rent. I make just enough to not qualify for food stamps too, which is okay. but hopefully paints a picture. the deposit alone is challenging to get but is possible. I have excellent credit. do not know of anywhere I haven't already found like people renting their rooms out on Facebook. one of these I found apparently was red tagged and has roaches and rodents. trying to not live like that. ive heard about income based apartments like wilbeth and they show open availability, but have ZERO clue how one gets in with income based. I hear the AMHA list is months if not years long for men without disabilities or children. I have time but I'm totally running out and am terrified I'm going to be put into a position where I cannot afford to keep the lights on, let alone save money. I understand I'll hear that I need to get a better job and I will when I have more stability, but I'm totally new to this area and know nobody or nothing about it.

I occasionally need help with labeling and bubble wrapping very light glassware. Looking for help on weekends occasionally for 2-6 hours at a time. If you can stand for hours at a time and have good finger dexterity you should be able to do it just fine. You can listen to things on your phone while you work. $18/hour. Dm me if interested.

This seems to be the new norm. The electric bill is high, but the water and sewer seems really high. We don't have a pool or slip and slide. We don't water the lawn. The only thing I can think of is that I have three homeschooled teenagers and my husband and I both work from home. So that's basically five adults home all day everyday using the water. But our bill from the city used to be half this!

We are going to Idina Menzel concert in Cuyahoga Falls. Please give us recs on places to check out in the area to enjoy and support. We are looking for bookstores, gift shops, museums. We are not foodies or outdoorsie, all adults who do not drink. But will happily take recommendations on take out pizza and nice coffee shop.. We like low key simple and love to support small businesses although we will check books a million . Yes we did Google search but nothing beats local recommendations. our drive is 4hrs and we will go straight to front st. wondering how bad or good is parking. Thank you kindly in advance.

Has anyone gotten married at/been to a wedding at Guy’s Party Center? I mean the actual ceremony part, not just a reception. If so, would you mind sharing how it was set up? A friend will be getting married there next year but is now considering having a ceremony elsewhere first because they’re struggling with figuring out how to set it up inside the ballroom. TIA!

Hi all, I’m sorry this isn’t your usual r/Akron post. I’m putting this out here in case someone can adopt him or just hear me sadly ramble. There’s a cat at a local shelter I’ve been visiting. His name is Maine, a 7 year old blind cat. I mostly noticed him because he was looking at his water bowl and looked so incredibly confused. I held him for a bit and he melted into my arms. I swear he wanted to crawl into my skin. He was genuinely crying when I had to put him back. It’s clear he has a lot of medical issues minus blindness. He walks very slowly and has a lot of dandruff and eye discharge. If I had enough money to spare on vet bills, I would adopt him in a heartbeat. Unfortunately due to the place I’m in now I have no money to afford taking care of him. I’m upset about it. I feel so connected to him in a way I never have with a cat. I want to give him a chance to live in a kind and loving home. If you see him, please give him a bit of attention and consider making him apart of your family, since I am not able to. Senior cats get overlooked a lot there and it kills me that these older cats don’t get as much love as their younger counterparts. Thank you 🫶

I did a little deep dive on the Akron beacon journal archives and came up with some dates....

Howard Johnson's closed in 1971.

Lawson's Restaurant (yes, THAT Lawson's) opened later that year.

It became an L&K in 72-73 when their owner, Consolidated Foods changed the name (They also owned Lawson's at the time).

Several years later, L&K closed and Casey's Family Restaurant took its place.

Casey's must have closed in 1981 because in the following year, Arby's took its place, and remains there to this day.

Until recent years, the decor was very late 70s, early 80s, so I wonder if that was a holdover from Casey's, or even L&K. As seen in one of the auction pictures, any interior traces of Howard Johnson's were sold off after they closed.
