Here is a complete guide for buying a laptop for all engineering branches . **After 300 upvotes i will post how to completely test a laptop like a pro** before buying so you don't make mistakes that i did and lost 50k

Firstly we will start with generations. Never go below the i5 10th gen . Go for higher. Never go for a lower clock speed model . Go for at least 2.4ghz .

Never buy a laptop with minor issues with screen or battery even on low cost . Laptops and electronics are highly unreliable once they get an issue . Avoid at all costs

Secondly go for at least 16 gb 2800 mhz ram .

Go for at least 256 gb ssd storage. Preferably nvme . Dont go for hard disk .

Go for at least 1080p display. Dont buy 720 p .

Your laptop battery should charge and discharge completely. It shouldn't even have 5 percent gap . Go for lower cycle count batteries. It should give a backup of at least 2.5 hours on the internet using YouTube and Chrome.

Always prefer keyboard with backlight.

Never go for touch screen . It will malfunction easily and modern laptops have costly led starting from 10k.

Always ask for charger which supports your laptop.

All the keys of your laptop should work properly without malfunctioning. Open notepad and click on it and type something. Leave it idle for 3 mins . It shouldn't type anything on its own .

Prefer buying metal case laptops .

Don't buy Toshiba laptops .

Avoid hp elitebooks if you can .

Your laptop processor should have at least 4 cores . Preferably 6 or 8 with above 10 threads .

Youe screen should be 14 inch . With no scratches and marks . Always test for dead pixels.

Most importantly ask him to give you on paper invoices with his sign and stamp . And must ask him to write each and everything on invoice about what he will cover in warranty, will he replace whole laptop or faulty parts , period of warranty, what if issue comes in motherboard or screen or something.

Read reviews regarding specific model on YouTube after looking for them . Go to market search laptop in your budget on local market. Then come home , sort out all best options read reviews and finalize.

Last year, I took the entry tests for Pakistan's top four universities: NUST, FAST, GIKI, and UET. I performed really well and secured admission to all of them.

Getting 94% in my Matric and then 82% in FSc 1st year was a huge shock to my parents. They thought I had given up on studying and wouldn’t be able to get into a reputable university. To make them happy and prove to myself that I could still pull it off, I studied day and night for the entry tests and cleared them all.

My mother always wished for me to attempt the entry tests for all the top universities, but then my Taya Abu (paternal uncle) stepped into the decision-making process. He lives in Islamabad and constantly pushed me to pursue Aerospace Engineering at NUST. Years ago, a friend of his had sent his own son to study Aerospace Engineering at IST, and that son is now working for an international airline abroad. My Taya Abu wanted his own sons to follow that same path, but neither was interested—one went into law, and the other into real estate.

Since my Taya Abu is a retired judge who spent years being transferred from city to city, he couldn't supervise his sons' education as closely as he wanted, leaving his dream unfulfilled. Because I had scored the highest in my extended family in Matric and FSc, he shifted that vision onto me. He kept insisting, "You should do Aerospace Engineering, it’s a great field." At first, I just gave nod-and-smile responses like, "Okay, sure, we'll see."

When he found out I cleared the NUST entry test, he heavily pressured me to join. He told me not to even consider other fields, claiming AI was oversaturated and Mechanical was dead. My parents agreed, saying he is senior in the family and we should respect his guidance. Deep down, I wanted to pursue Automotive Engineering at UET because of my passion for cars. Still, I compromised, thinking Aerospace wouldn't be too different and I could manage it.

Fast forward two semesters at NUST: I have zero interest in aircraft, and adapting to the program has been a real struggle. I did poorly in my first semester. I managed to improve slightly in my second semester, but I am still hovering right on the edge of academic probation.

During this summer break after 2nd semester finals, I decided to secretly prepare for the UET ECAT again. I scored 292, which easily secures my admission into Automotive Engineering.

Now I’m facing a major dilemma:

Part of me feels hesitant to walk away from a coveted NUST seat that required so much hard work to get, especially when I see how desperately other students dream of getting in.

I am constantly worried about social pressure and what relatives or peers will say ("Why on earth would you leave NUST?").

My head is completely conflicted between staying in a prestigious university/field I have no passion for versus restarting in a field I actually care about.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How do you handle the pressure of leaving a top-tier brand name for a field you actually like? What should I do?

My sister will hopefully be admitted to NUST this year for Chemical Engineering. I am her guardian, and I am a little concerned about the overall expenses, so I would really appreciate some guidance in estimating her monthly budget.

Could you please help me understand the expected costs for tuition fees, hostel charges, mess expenses, and monthly pocket money? I would like to have a realistic estimate in mind so I can plan accordingly.

I have already asked Claude but I want to get opinions from students on campus for better understanding.

I would also appreciate your opinion on whether Chemical Engineering is a worthwhile field to pursue. From the beginning, I have been advising her to focus on developing practical skills rather than relying solely on the degree.

Last thing, she probably won't be getting accepted in the first/second merit list so kinda worried about her not getting the hostel on campus.

If i get into my lower preference in first list and i book a hostel and pay the fees and later if i dont get in my top preference can i refund the fees and the hostel charges or whatever i pay

I got admission offer letter from GIKI in EE which was my first preference. Now I have to submit fee till 28th to secure my seat. I have also secured 160 in NET so I'm hopeful that I will get into NUST in EE as well. But I am confused where to go.

I need an advice regarding change of preference list.

I took NAT for the first time, NAT Comsats and scored 80 on it which is quite bad, expected better than it bcz I was v sure only 6 mcqs were wrong.

Anyways, my aggregate is quite low (around 83.3)

Is there any student pursuing this degree who is from Karachi and was able to get on-campus hostel. If so, in which merit list did your name appear?

I’m in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some advice.I have secured admission in Giki Mech eng but the admission fee of Rs 80k is non refundable .My first preference is Nust ( Aerospace engineering), and my final aggregate is 74.88%.So If you were in my position would you
Pay the GIKI fee to secure the seat?
Or wait for the NUST merit lists?
Also if anyone got into Aerospace or Mechanical at NUST with a similar aggregate in recent years I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.

I'm from a upper middle class family, so GIKI/IBA's fees is nearly 40-50% of my father's income, we do have many assets but going there will definitely disrupt the finances. I'm also worried that despite being frugal at GIKI, the mess charges, additional charges will rack up, or a fee hike which could cause some money troubles. One reason I do like GIKI and NUST Isb though is I am a freelancer and I feel like I could up my game with the extra free time and also learn skills relevant to my degree.

My parents don't really like the more unconventional fields such as Geoinformatics, Energy, Petroleum, Material/Environmental, or Computer Engineering since they dont have the best scope and employability in Pakistan, but I know they have a lot of scope abroad because of the RAM shortage and drone warfare, EVs, pollution, urban planning etc. I could be wrong though. Although its expensive they like IBA a lot because regardless of degree, IBA grads get fairly decent corporate jobs in Pakistan, and I'm not against that idea because I also like numbers and finance in general, but I feel like it would limit my options to go abroad.

I really want to pursue a master's in Europe after graduation so please recommend the options and the degrees which maximise my chances of scholarships abroad and have good scope there.

How hard it is to get a single room in boys hostel? If i apply for a single room in first semester tou miljayega? I have a 67.5 aggregate and probably won't make it into CE at SEECS. My main options are CE at NUST CEME or BBA at FAST Lahore. I don't have a strong interest for either field, so I'd really appreciate advice on which would be the better choice and why.
