i (23f) and my bf (25m) have been dating for 3 years now. my bf recently moved to tokyo for a summer internship so our time zones have been completely off and catching each other for a proper conversation has become really difficult. we already talked about it and decided that we should text more, even though we both agreed that our relationship has always felt much better through facetime.
at first, i genuinely thought he was handling the distance really well. he started becoming more consistent with his messages, sending me good morning texts when he woke up, checking in around my lunch break, and sending me good night messages before he slept. i knew he was busy with his internship, so i appreciated that he was still trying to maintain some kind of routine between us.
the problem started when i noticed something weird. whenever i replied to his messages, he would sometimes take hours to respond, or sometimes he just wouldnt respond at all. at first i brushed it off because of the time difference and his workload, but after a while it started feeling strange. like how could someone remember to send me a perfectly timed good morning message every day but somehow not see my reply afterwards?
i eventually asked him about it, and thats when i found out he had been using acciowork to help manage the messages. apparently because of our time difference, he set up a system to remind him when to send certain messages and even prepared some automated texts so he wouldnt forget to check in with me.
i honestly dont know how i feel about it.
part of me understands his intention. he didnt do this because he doesnt care about me. if anything, he was trying to make sure that even when he was busy, i still felt remembered. i know people use calendars and reminders for important things all the time, so maybe this is just another version of that.
but at the same time, i cant help feeling a little hurt. the messages i thought were him naturally thinking of me were actually something he had planned and automated. and the fact that he could send the message but not continue the conversation afterwards makes me question whether he was genuinely trying to connect with me or just checking off a relationship task.
i dont want to be unfair to him because i know long distance is hard and he was trying to make things work. but i also dont want to pretend that it doesnt bother me.
