Q&A Weekend "No Dumb Questions" Megathread

Whether it's mods, wheels, tires, tuning, suspension, maintenance, repairs, exhaust, or something else for relevant models, this thread is for questions that may seem too small to warrant a post or because searching just isn't your friend today.

You'll also find resources on the sidebar/about section including: recommended mods and OEM/aftermarket parts retailers, tuners, online owner's manuals, and other forums.

Be sure to include any relevant model information (year/generation, mileage, mods, codes, etc) if it isn't already in your user flair.

This post will be replaced by a new weekday megathread on Monday at 6am EST.

Ended up going with Unitronic after much reading, it seemed to be the most OEM+ tune with the smoothest DSG profile. Since it's a commuter with some stop-and-go I just wanted something easy and reliable, though I know other tunes produce more power.

The flash experience was super easy and the change in power and shift points is noticeable. Even more fun to drive than before.

Other changes:

  • Neuspeed RSe10 18x8, 235/40 tires
  • H&R 24mm RSB
  • aFe drop in filter

I think I'm good on changes from here on out, it's perfect for what I use it for.

I’m a middle aged dude who purchased a 2025 GTI SE in April for 37,500 OTD. I gave up the practicality of a very nice F150 Hybrid. I could have kept both but it wasn’t worth the cost for me, because the truck wasn’t paid off and I used the practicality only a couple of times per year. After owning multiple BMWs, a couple GTIs, etc. I think this GTI is really the chef’s kiss. No, it doesn’t have a manual but as a daily driver it might have gotten old for me after a while if I snatched a used manual. This car has the perfect amount of power for me and even in automatic comfort mode I can summons it on command without having to downshift, etc. I wanted the SE because I like leather and the extra creature comforts. I had a 2017 GTI SE in the past which didn’t blow me away and I had a 2013 Stage 1 APR tuned Driver’s Edition which was the ultimate driving machine IMHO. I sadly traded it in on a 2015 BMW 550i which I hated (I know totally different cars). Anyhow, this 2025 GTI brings me back to that feeling of refinement that I had with my Drivers Edition along with the perfect amount of power (for me). I’m not sure I will ever get this tuned if it’s even available. Intercooler-maybe. Everything from the seats to the tech and aesthetics of the 8.5 is perfect to me. I know these cars used to be cheaper, but I think $37,500 out the door was justified. Now the 2026 prices are off the chain due to the tariffs and I’m glad I was able to snatch a 2025. If you’re thinking about a GTI, try to grab a 2025 if you can. It’s perfect.

Nearly a year in and getting in this car still gives me that fuzzy feeling. Is the MK7.5 the goat? Loving the group and the support from almost everyone here is fantastic! Here he is 1 year later!!!

Maintenance Those of you rocking all weather tires…

I’m not sure which ones to go with. My research shows that Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4s are both good options. I just want tires that won’t take the fun out of the car, but still be safe in colder temps. Thanks for any help.

Maintenance Can a seized engine really be rebuilt?

For context, my daughter's 2015 GTI's engine seized due to oil leak from the oil pan and valve cover. The shop said it couldn't be rebuilt and required a new engine and quote 13k (insane).

I recently reached out to an independent mechanic specializing in vw/audi in my area he said he could absolutely rebuild the seized engine and quoted 2600 + 1000 for removal and reinstall.

I'm stuck w the car due to the loan so i just want to get it up and running without buying a new engine.

Should i expect it to have issues years later since it's already been seized? Not doubting the mechanic at all just want to get a sense of how much life i can expect out of this repair

Maintenance Anyone know how to reset the driver side window?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

For context: I left all 4 windows cracked one day and it rained the following night and interior got soaked, I immediately point fans in 4 doors the next day and dried everything off. But since then the window only goes up and down little by little instead of continuously. So was wondering if anyone has advice because i really am trying not to take it to the dealership.

After 2 years of owning this car I can still say that I love driving it every single day.

I’ve added a full maxton design kit, rotiform dtm silver 19” set with pilot sport 4s, carbon steering wheel, black/white logos and this weekend I’ll be installing the open air intake from integrated engineering, along with their turbo muffler delete and turbo inlet pipe!

Maintenance Misfire problem Golf Gti 7.5

Post image
3 Upvotes

First of all I bought this car from a dealer, it already had a Stage 1 ECU tune and Stage 1 DSG tune. A few days after owning it I noticed that once the engine warmed up to around 80°C the radiator fans were always running at about 80% speed and would never turn off until I switched the car off. I took it back to the dealer and they changed some parameters in the tune. After that the radiator fans started working normally again, but now I have another problem. At idle I get misfires on all cylinders. The coils and spark plugs were replaced about 10k km ago so I don’t really see the point in changing them again, especially since it’s happening on all four cylinders and not just one. I already replaced one camshaft magnet because the connector had oil in it, and I also replaced the PCV valve because a lot of people recommended it. Someone also told me to unplug the EVAP purge valve to test it but that didn’t make any difference. The weird thing is the car drives perfectly, it pulls hard, has no loss of power, no hesitation and no fault codes. The only issue is at idle where it runs a bit rough and I can see misfires on all cylinders. Some people have suggested injectors, carbon buildup on the intake valves or maybe even something in the tune since this all started after they changed the software to fix the radiator fan issue. Has anyone had something similar where the car only misfires at idle on all cylinders but drives perfectly everywhere else? Can this be software related, i do sometimes get the code p302. On all cylinders. When i check live data for cylinder misfires: on all cylinders in 10 minutes of idling i get like 50-90 misfires

Car has 80k kms and 2019 with opf stage 1 planning on upgrading de dowpipe with 200cell cat and also full catback exhaust, but cant do that until i fix the problem

Modding Talk Mk8 gas hood strut recommendations

You guys have any links or advice on which hood strut to grab? I see there's a ton of options out there but I'd like to see what you guys grabbed. I find it incredibly stupid my last 2 GTIs mk6/7 both had a gas hood strut now with the mk8 you have to prop it open. I haven't opened the hood a lot in my month of ownership but I've already found it incredibly annoying. I liked having to just pop the hood and lift it open I guess it's another cost saving measure.

Maintenance Mk7 wiper spindle

Stupid question: Does the driver-side (US) wiper spindle need to be centered on the cowl opening? Just finished cleaning my sunroof drains and am reassembling. Wanted to check before I put everything back together. The cowl is fully secured along the windshield edge. Thanks.

Modding Talk Mk7 exhaust

Upvotes

I have a 2015 GTI, I’m looking to get an exhaust without spending a ridiculous amount of money. I don’t care about performance, and I want it to be tame as it’s my daily, and I don’t want it to be obnoxious on cold start, I like the club sport muffler but those are so expensive. My question is has anyone gotten a custom exhaust done with just an after market muffler?

New Car Mk7 vs Mk8

Hello hello, I come seeking advice and hopefully not to start a war in the comments section. I recently had my MK7.5 GTI performance written off by a silly driver not paying attention. I’m slightly torn, I absolutely love the golf platform, I’ve owned a mk6 and a mk4 as well, my most recent GTI left me wanting however as I never got the chance to modify it even though I planned to ( change in life circumstances). I am considering another golf as I feel like I have not had my fun with the platform just yet. However I’m left split between a mk7.5 TCR and a facelifted mk8 GTI. If anyone here has jumped from the mk7 to mk8 I’d love to hear from you. The mk8 club sport and 50th anniversary editions are slightly out of my price range so I am leaning slightly towards the TCR as it offers a little bit more power over the standard mk8 and I like the aesthetics of the older generation even though the mk8 has been growing on me hence the post. The one thing that would certainly sway me is manual availability however neither of these come in a manual in the uk. Just for reference I’m comparing TCR’s and Mk8’s around the £25,000 mark, thanks for all and any input ladies and gentlemen.
