F-Zero GX (NS2) PSA for Switch 2 GX Players: Adjust the Controller Deadzones in the Options Menu

EDIT 2026-03-18: This issue has been significantly improved, as per Piccolo's most recent test following an update to the GCN app. If you are using a non-GCN controller and still struggling with handling, I would still recommend calibrating your controller in the game's Options menu. Best of luck!

OK, so first off, I haven't tested this with a GCN controller, but it worked wonders with the NS1 Pro Controller.

After repeatedly getting my ass kicked by Deathborn in Chapter 8 on Very Hard, I was at a loss, because I remembered that mission being FAR easier than it was. I had conquered Chapter 7 in like an hour and remembered this one being a piece of cake in comparison, so something was off. I loaded my GCN copy of the game on the Wii and tried it on there to make sure I didn't suck. I did, but not at all as badly as I did on the Switch 2 version of the game.

What immediately stood out to me is that the GCN version of the game was NOWHERE NEAR as sensitive. While I was sliding all over the place on the Switch 2 version, it was much easier to balance the machine while boosting on the GCN version.

The explanation for this was in a video posted by Piccolo today: the Switch 2 does not properly emulate stick travel, evidently on ANY controller, and the result is that minor inputs scale too rapidly and result in an oversteery, slidey experience. This issue is apparently in the Gamecube emulation itself and not specific to F-Zero GX, so hopefully a patch is forthcoming.

In the meantime, there is a way to make the game play more like its original version. In the F-Zero GX Options menu, go to controller calibration and follow the instructions to calibrate your joystick.

BEFORE YOU SAVE YOUR CALIBRATION, adjust the deadzones to be larger using the D-pad. Making the deadzones larger accomplishes two things:

  1. Increases the amount of stick travel necessary for the game to record a movement, and most importantly
  2. Changes the input scaling associated with stick travel. This means that the larger your deadzone, the harder it will be to make the machine slide by turning.

For the NS1 Pro Controller, I've found that 6-7 clicks in the positive direction for the X and Y deadzones delivers an experience that felt similar to the GCN version of the game. You can tune this to your liking. Upon adjusting the deadzones I was IMMEDIATELY closer to my pace on the GCN version, and while I haven't beaten Chapter 8 yet, I got much closer and definitely feel it's now possible.

TL;DR make the controller deadzones bigger in the F-Zero GX Options menu until the game feels drivable and you'll probably enjoy the game more. Happy F-Zero everyone.

EDIT: Updated the text to make clear the settings adjustment has to occur within the in-game options menu. Thanks to the mods for creating a new flair and updating it.

F-Zero GP Legend (GBA) Continue reworking world building of F-ZERO anime. Next part is Reactor Might

Post image

What we know about Reactor Might? This is a mysterious particles which created after Big Bang. We have 6 reactors: 3 light reactors and 3 dark reactors. The problem is that their abilities are limitless and free to act as the script dictates: altering consciousness and erasing memories, creating clones, forcing the host to mutate, you can even install it in your car and once you've collected all six, you can use them to recreate the universe as you wish. The last one is fine, but everything else sounds like a plot device.

Let's compare Reactors with Chaos Emeralds. Emeralds was simple. Yes, they're simple, but at the same time, they were entirely dependent on the user's emotions. You can't just use power, you have to be mentally prepared. The Reactor Might doesn't have these limitations, and ultimately, it becomes a "Swiss Army Knife".

What we change? From Big Bang particles Instead of abstract particles from the Big Bang, we will have crystallized clumps of matter from dead stars. One of these crystals fell to Earth. The study of this artifact led humanity to an extraterrestrial civilization, which led to an exchange of technologies. This is how Mute City came into being.

Reactors can be categorized by abilities, and they can even be visually distinguished by color. But why reactors? Reactors came later. A single pulsation of an unstable crystal can lead to a cataclysm that could destroy a planet. And thus, we had Big Blue, which was 99% submerged by the pulsation of such matter. After this incident, the decision was made to seal it in a metal shell, but even so, it can still be dangerous, so it was left under guard to supply large metropolises, like Mute City on Earth, with electricity.

F-Zero GP Legend (GBA) Let's rework the worldbuilding of the F-ZERO anime. The first thing I'd do is shift the timeline.

Post image

See, 2201 sounds unnatural for futuristic world like in anime. The original franchise took place in the 26th century (i.e., 2560), while the anime takes place in the early 23rd century. I understand that if the government isn't stealing the budget, it's possible to go into space, but just think about it: how did humanity develop advanced technology and the idea of aliens inhabiting Earth in such a short period of time?

What am I suggesting? I'd like the timeframe, while not exactly the same as in the game canon, to at least be convincing. I propose moving the events to the mid-25th century (i.e., from 2440 to 2450). Now, Mute City's appearance in this timeframe sounds convincing. Next, I'll explain where Mute City and other elements of the world came from.

F-Zero GX (NS2) Just completed the story mode on Normal difficulty on my Switch 2!

It was a lot easier thanks to the create and load suspend point feature and also due to the fact I have completed the story mode before. Unlike the Gamecube version which took way too long, this only took a few attempts. Wish me luck on the other difficulties. I’m gonna need it.

F-Zero GX (GCN) F-Zero GX Chapter 1 Capsule (Hard) tips?

I’m happy I get to finally play GX instead of only being a few minutes of a demo disc (back then when I bought Mario Kart: DD with a second disc for other GC game demos)

I’m still getting use to the high speed drive controls. When I started Story mode on Chapter 1 I did the capsule run. I was like okay cool, onwards. Only to notice that I have to do hard mode??

I can’t for the life of me get it done! I have 3 laps and 1 minute to get them all! I am always off by 5-6 capsule. Those who pulled it off, how did you do it?

F-Zero GX (GCN) GX Alternate Story - What if Blood Falcon wins the Grand Prix

I still believe Deathborn still kills Black Shadow as the threat condition was for BS to win the next Grandprix. I then think, seeing that Blood Falcon refuses to play nice as he was loyal to only Black Shadow. What do you guys think?

Question What part of F-Zero do you think outsiders never actually get shown?

F-Zero has always felt like a franchise with scattered appeal and respect, but no clear internet-era gateway in the 2010s or 2020s. Other dormant Nintendo series had big personalities and fan culture constantly reintroducing people to their worlds. We got it too, but not really. Captain Falcon's depiction in Smash got a massive cultural resonance, and the anime's Falcon Punch did, while the core F-Zero experience often got flattened into either an ā€œold racing gameā€ by outsiders or ā€œthis series is awesomeā€ by fans without much deeper translation.

There have been plenty of F-Zero video essays, but not really a major ā€œF-Zero channelā€ with enough size and staying power throughout the years to consistently shape how outsiders understand the series. I think that reputation flattening, obviously alongside Nintendo’s refusal to make a new mainline game, is a big reason people rarely see everything the series has to offer as one connected appeal.

But this is not about whether I think F-Zero should be ā€œfor everyoneā€. Its gameplay and aesthetic already lend itself to being a lower-middle tier Nintendo franchise in terms of popularity. It's about giving people more than one honest doorway before deciding whether it is or isn't for them.

Here's my rationale:

A completely new person doesn't need to know the entire timeline or play the most advanced games first. They need one quick point of contact that makes F-Zero feel understandable, accessible but challenging, and social.

  • That's why my first step is either F-Zero 99 for its instant online access, tutorial, robust unlock system, and rival rankings that reward players' progress rather than a flat-out victory.
  • GP Legend for a more character-focused package that puts a modern player onto the worldbuilding as an appeal alongside the gameplay, and because it's the easiest mainline title.

Those games are followed by the quiz, clips, and community so the person has reasons to keep engaging.

  • The Base Experience (SNES and Maximum Velocity) show the stripped-down foundation and can be a natural step up in difficulty from the comeback mechanics of 99. If they've played Classic mode in 99, they've already learned this style of gameplay.
  • The Ultimate Experience is where the series becomes a 30-racer, full-contact, 3D speed endurance test. It is F-Zero in its most realized form, but it's also pretty hard and has no tutorial or on-ramp, so it should be a step up after the Base experience. F-Zero X and F-Zero GX are the ultimate "so this is why people are obsessed" proof of evidence.
  • The Extended Experience exists because, for some people, F-Zero is easier to care about when the characters are visible. The anime shows the side of the franchise that gets overlooked when F-Zero is reduced to just a ā€œfast racing game,ā€ and its serialized but colorful storylines will help a broader audience understand. GP Legend and Climax are 2D games that carry elements from the 3D titles.

Some people are curious about F-Zero, but will unfortunately bounce off the word ā€œracingā€ immediately, so these methods give them a way in before asking them to play seriously yet.

  • The Personality Quiz allows casuals to attach themselves to a character and their machine in the most self-relatable way possible.
  • Operation Spin Booster uploads isolated anime clips that a casual can easily show to their friends. It's a complete HD upscale of the anime (by NoxiMation) with accurately translated subs (by MuteCityDrifters).
  • Various content creators have covered F-Zero's history, characters and gameplay, and I have begun to dedicate my own second channel to creating a front door for the fandom.

I hope this guide is helpful. Remember, this is my own personal preference, but I hope an F-Zero fan can use it to eventually create another F-Zero fan.
