General Cleaning Cleaning with a Pet

My daughter has really been wanting to get a cat for years. I have been holding off but now shes old enough to take care of it (15) I might relent.

My biggest concern is fur and mess. People who have pets, how much longer does it take you to clean vs before having a pet? I probably spend an hour a day cleaning right now.

Any suggestions on minimizing messes?

Discussion What is one cleaning habit that made the biggest difference in your home?

I have picked up a lot of useful cleaning ideas over time but I am always looking for better methods.

What is one cleaning habit routine or tip that has made your home easier to keep clean or more organized? It could be something simple that saves time prevents messes or makes cleaning less stressful.

I would love to hear what has worked for you and maybe discover a few new ideas to try.

Discussion Stay away if you're looking for a side hustle—unresponsive support and unfair policies

Working as a cleaner for Homeaglow was a complete waste of time.

First, their pay structure makes it nearly impossible to earn decent money starting out. The company takes a massive cut of your earnings for new clients, meaning you only stand to make a reasonable wage if you manage to secure long-term repeat clients.

Worse, their support team does not have their workers' backs. My account was deactivated over a single bad review from a client who lied about the service provided. Despite having a track record of glorious, stellar reviews from all my other clients, Homeaglow completely ignored my proven track record. Even after I provided the full details and facts of what actually happened, they refused to reinstate my account.

If you are looking for a reliable, fair side hustle, this company is not it. You would honestly be better off building your own independent cleaning business or cleaning your own home. Stay away!

Kitchen how to prevent bananas from stinking up and infusing food in my fridge?

not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I'm at my wits end.

i keep my bananas in the fridge since i live in such a warm and humid climate that otherwise they'd only last a day or two. however, they end up infusing food in my fridge with their taste-- cheese, butter, and dressings (basically anything with fat) get the worst of it and become unusable. i know i should be using airtight containers for my food anyway, but in the meantime, it seems more practical to attack the source of the problem. ive tried putting the bananas in the produce drawer and it doesn't really make a difference. i also know that you're not really supposed to put bananas in airtight containers since they sweat/release a lot of gas as they ripen and it makes them oxidize more.

any ideas? today i discovered the half finished tin of mussels i was so looking forward to finishing tasted like bananas and i was distraught. 😭🙏

Kitchen Are dishwashers worth it?

I've been told by two people they are not, as you still need to rinse the dishes beforehand? Is this true?

I suffer from chronic migraines so dishes often pile up during an attack. Are dishwashers worth it in a household setting?

Thank you!

General Cleaning Removing greasy(?) spot from back of Kindle

Post image
2 Upvotes

Not sure how to get this greasiness / shininess off the back of the Kindle. It's supposed to be matte, but I was adding the little smile face with gel nail polish and I accidentally used non-alcohol nail polish remover which left this greasy spot.

I've tried using dish soap and cornstarch on it but it hasn't helped too much. Would appreciate any help

Discussion Tell me your dish washing routine

So, I have always let my dishes air dry. I know some people who clean them with a towel after they wash them and others just do the whole dishwasher thing. How do you do it? And do you have a dish pad or a dish strainer?

Discussion Is kitchen roll the biggest backward step in history?

Thumbnail

Why do people keep buying that archaic roll?

You try to pull off a sheet and it tears badly. Or it rips in half. It’s awkward.

You have oil on one finger and want to grab a piece of kitchen roll, but it tears, it isn’t enough, so you grab another one, and it’s still not enough. You’ve already pulled from the roll three times.

Meanwhile, there are napkin holders that can be stuck to the wall, or you can simply take a napkin easily in whatever way you prefer. The cost of napkins is practically identical to kitchen rolls if you look around, and they are just as strong.

Why do kitchen rolls still exist? Are the elites trying to control us or something?

PS: I was obviously joking and using sarcasm, you are frying me to unfair negative karma :(, when I just wanted a healthy debate of how to optimize taking kitchen paper more efficiently and learn new ways from each other

General Cleaning Condo still smells like raw onions. I tried everything.

I even turn on the exhaust fan above my stove and keep my windows open. I boil vinegar after cooking and it helps to an extent.

Still my apartment smells like curry. I’m Indian so I cook a lot of curry. I live in a condo, which has a sliding door for the bedroom. I keep it closed and yet the curry smell seeps in and ruin my bedsheets 😓

I can’t stop cooking Indian curry. Is there anything else that I can do to get rid of smells completely??

Bathroom Am I insane or is this really mold?

I tried spraying this with a shower mold solution my grandpa made (alcohol+vinegar+dawn) and scrubbed it and it didn’t work. It kept coming back. It’s everywhere in our shower/bathtub area (none in the tub, just on the tiles). I’m getting worried that this might be mold. Should I call our landlord?

Please help, I’m freaking out right now.

I’ve seen many cleaning methods online, but some seem too harsh for the cork and suede footbed.
What’s your go-to step-by-step process for cleaning Birkenstocks while keeping the materials in good condition?
I’d love to hear techniques from people with long-term experience.

Discussion What cleaning task do you always do immediately instead of putting it off?

I have noticed that some cleaning tasks are much easier if they are done right away instead of waiting until later.

Is there one task you never postpone because you know it will become more difficult if you do? It could be wiping kitchen counters washing dishes cleaning the shower taking out the trash or something else.

I would love to hear which small habits have saved you the most time and effort over the long run.

Kitchen Burned sausage in this white pan and now it's grey. Anyway to clean it back to normal?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Placed sausage to fry in the pan and walked away to do something real quick thinking I had time. I came back to a mess with it burnt to the pan. Ashamed of myself that I did this to the pan. Especially cause it's my mom's favorite.

I tried scrubbing the crap out of it, baking soda, vinegar water boil. But it doesn't seem to do anything, or I am doing them wrong. I'll try them again or anything to make this right. Or buy a new pan if I must.

General Cleaning Is a robot vacuum worth it?

I have a dog and two cats, all hardwood floors with rugs. I had a roomba back like 10 years ago and it really spent most of its time getting caught on things or stuck in corners. Has the technology advanced enough to make one worth it? Which brand would you recommend? Are the vacuum/mops worth it?

Kitchen How do I get these marks out of my stainless steel hob?

Post image

Was boiling some rice which spilled over and I'm not sure whether it was the continued cooking of the meal and the heat boiling the water off, or whether I left it too long after cooking to clean up but it's left this mark I can't get out. I've tried cif, dish soap and kitchen degreaser with dish clothes and kitchen sponges. Any advice would be appreciated

Community Appreciation What finally got you to stick to a cleaning/chore schedule? (curious after building my own tracker)

I can plan the perfect cleaning schedule and abandon it within two weeks, every time — until I started using a shared task tracker with my household where we both see what's done/overdue instead of it living in a note app only I check.

Built my own version of this eventually (heimlig — shared chore tracker + shopping list + budget, free, Android + web), but honestly more interested in what's worked for other people here regardless of tool. Physical charts? Specific apps? Habit-stacking tricks? What actually made it stick past the first month?
