Welcome to r/bettafish!

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas.

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

I thought she was still distracted by her own food so I threw some in for the shrimp. Wrong. Guess who won't be getting dinner tomorrow...

Found a photo of my first aquarium. Back then I didn't realize how tiny it actually was. But I really tried my best to take care of it. That betta lived with me for two years. I remember crying so much when he passed

I finally get it. He came in and already has a huge personality— I’m absolutely in love with this fish. I want him to have the most amazing life possible.
Timed it so he should hopefully see me through the rest of my degree, my precious college fish. Please help with naming this big boy!!

Edit to add: This stunner is from Tucky’s!! Shipped quickly and in great condition

But he’s my calmest betta ever. Ignores all of his tank mates. I also have a koi betta and he’s a total menace in comparison.

Help Would a betta be happy in this? (50l/13gal)

Post image

Planning on using this tank for any wild color shrimp popping up in my main tank , and thought a betta might also enjoy it in there? Since I wouldn't mind that much if it would snack on the wild type babies. Would only get a short fin or female, I sometimes see those pop up online from people needing to rehome them.

I think it's fine? But I live in germany where aquarium standards are pretty high, so I wanna ask some people with experience if they think a betta could thrive in there. I know for long finned bettas people often recommend lower tanks, but a short fin should be fine with a 35cm high tank right?

Transformation A recovery story (swim bladder)

I found him in a cup at Petco marked 50% off. He could barely swim and mostly just laid on his side if he wasn’t struggling to the surface to catch a breath.

I put him in a long tub with about 4 inches of clean water (a mix of RO and tap, my tap water is hard) and almond leaves.

He didn’t start showing signs of recovery until after his first dose of Kanaplex.

2 days later he wasn’t lying on his side anymore. He would on the bottom, but upright.

100% water change and 2nd dose of Kanaplex. 2 days later he is swimming around comfortably.

Now he’s in his own 5.5 planted tank on my kitchen table.

This weekend I’m buying him little ghost shrimp to hunt.

I celebrate 3 years with bumblebee soon, and his tank celebrates 2 years with no water change (which sounds insane)
The first clip is a year ago, second is now!

6 day transformation 🥹 he has a precious lil "fin tag" it seems on his back fin. excited to see how his color continues to progress! he was so slow and sad looking at the store but so curious whenever i went up to him and just peering at me. he loves his new home and continues flitting around exploring everything, including my son whenever he goes to look at him lol. upgrading him from his current 6.8 gallon to a 10 gallon in the next few days :-)

Help Is this safe?

Ive had this for a few months and my little guy loved swimming through it but after a disastrous water change I woke up and his fins had been cut badly. I took it out that morning and now I’m wondering if it’s actually safe or not? He’s now doing a lot better with bettafix and stress coat now in the tank.

What do you think?

Help Tank mate ideas?

It's a 13Gal and I only have my female betta and I have a temporary guppy in there that was a mystery fry I got from purchasing duckweed. Im currently cycling the guppy's tank so I don't want more guppies for this tank.

I'm also lf fishes a little bigger than 0.5 inches because sometimes I even lose sight of my juvenile guppy with how many hiding spots there are.

There is a big cave opening underneath the wood where betta doesn't bother to explore much.

Been crying for an hour :( I have a giant tattoo of this betta fish, I love him so much. He was beautiful 5 hours ago and so happy. I got him rehomed to me from a friend and they had him for a year. I feel like he had a completely preventable death, I feel like a terrible fish parent. I knew he wouldn’t live forever but I really wanted him to, to at least die of old age. I was about to upgrade his tank and I’m just so heartbroken.

Help Red mark on his tail and face?

Thumbnail

My boy Eddy has been doing really well and he’s swimming around and eating normally but I just noticed he has this red mark on the bottom of his tail? And it looks like the same type of red mark on his face 😞 I have looked all over his tank to see if there is anything sharp but there really isn’t. Does it look like an injury? What should I do to help it?

His only tank mate is one ramshorn snail. I did a partial water change earlier and it wasn’t there. The ammonia is a tiny bit high I think? Posted a pic of liquid test results of ammonia and PH. I used prime and stability and the tank is 10 gallons + fully planted. He’s got a filter and heater. Current temp is 78. Our power was out for 24 hours yesterday idk if it could be stress related? I have tannins in the tank.

Help Fin loss/ripping

Post image
5 Upvotes

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.. my betas fins keep ripping, they seem to be splitting but rip apart, my last beta got fin rot although I had him for 2 years. I got my new fish maybe 4 months ago and now this is happening and I just can’t do a repeat of last time it was traumatic. Iv been doing water changes, took out any things i thought could be sharp, put sponges over the intake. The nitrates are high and Iv been doing the water changes to help that, I’m not sure what is causing it though. I have 2 filters running a HOB and a sponge, which also could be an issue.. I’m just sad also can’t seem to keep many plants alive and I know that could cause a spike but Iv been taking them out asap as I see them. Any advice will be appreciated

My betta rufous as of last night has been looking a little fat around the belly. I'm hoping this is just eating a bit much because I fed the tank a little extra the past couple days. I'm more concerned about the potential of dropsy or tumors. Need to buy a test kit tommorow so I'm not to sure what the parameters are. Temp is sitting at 76 because he's with some celestial pearl danios. Any help is appreciated
