Burnt out former techies: What are you doing for work now?

Hi there!

I would love to hear from former tech workers that left the industry due to burnout and ended up doing something completely different. OR even if you left for awhile and went back to tech, what type of work did you do during that time? Did you go to school or focus on part-time work to help with your recovery?

I'm not necessarily looking for advice here. I just want to hear what others are doing outside of tech and gather some inspiration for other career paths.

How can I defend myself legally

I'm a short woman and after a few bad experiences I started carrying pepper gel at all times. However I started a new job with a strict "no weapons" policy that includes legal weapons and pepper spray, the consequence is getting fired.

I have a...pretty unsavory walk home at night every day so I would really prefer having a way to defend myself. I take transit so leaving the gel in my car is not an option (I do not have a car or a parking spot so it will never be an option) and my job is small enough to not have a security person or front desk where I could maybe leave the spray. Basically if it falls out of my pocket I could be fired.

Some suggestions I've seen are travel size heavy hold hairspray, a birdie alarm, or a very bright flashlight to temporarily stun an attacker, but are those actually effective? I could just hide the spray in my backpack I suppose but it wouldn't be very useful if it's out of reach.

Rec soccer players needed for weekly pickup game

We organize a weekly pickup game at beach chalet and are looking for players over 30+ to play in our friendly pickup games (skill level don’t matter). We play 8v8 on half pitch and we have been organizing our own pickup games for over 10 years now. We have a few open spots now so looking to find people who love to play weekly and looking to make new friends in SF.

Need advice: I want to move to SF but it feels impossible.

I’m a single 34 year old woman living in the greater Sacramento area in a small, conservative town. There isn’t enough of what I need here, not enough art, culture, or things to do. I feel like a black sheep here. I’m honestly starting to lose my mind.

It’s always been a dream of mine to live in San Francisco. I have a job that I could keep if I moved there. The problem is that it just feels impossible with the cost of housing. I make about $110k a year, and it seems like living alone probably isn’t even an option.

I’ve thought about renting a room, but I have two cats, so that feels like it could be pretty challenging. I also travel a lot for work and need to keep my car, so at least some kind of parking is necessary.

I don’t really have anything tying me here. No spouse, no kids. I just don’t want to waste away my life in a town that doesn’t feel like home when I have the freedom to go somewhere I’ve always wanted to live.

Has anyone made something like this work? Is living in SF on my salary realistic, or should I be looking at nearby cities instead? Any advice, experiences, or even just some encouragement would really mean a lot right now.

Landlord raised rent between the listing and signing lease

Hi, I applied to a place that was listed at $4000 on Craigslist and the building's own application portal, so it wasn't a typo on one site.

Just got the proposed lease back and it says $4200. No explanation for the jump. I didn't pay an application fee, and I haven't signed anything yet, but I do want this specific unit at the price I applied for.

Has anyone actually gotten a landlord/PM to honor the advertised price after this happened?

I have the screenshots of the old price, am I able to hold them to it?

Not really trying to start a legal fight, just want the apartment at the price I applied for if that's realistic. Appreciate any advice, thanks!

Metreon Odyssey Tix

Hey all! I’m visiting SF for the first time on August 5-8. I was really hoping to see the Odyssey in 70mm and didn’t realize it would still be pretty booked through mid-August. My small city has a nice AMC theater with Dolby, but it rarely books out so I wasn’t anticipating tickets still being basically sold out (aside from the front couple rows). It would be my first true 70mm imax experience.

If anyone is planning on cancelling their tickets for any of the showtimes, I’d really appreciate a heads up so I can snag your seats. Figured it’s a long shot but might be worth it. I’m very excited to be in the city and explore regardless and would love any first-time visiter advice/recommendations!

Fermented Tea Leaves

Is there anywhere in SF where one can buy fermented tea leaves? I can't be paying Burma Superstar prices for every time I need my tea leaf salad fix (which is often). Would love to be able to make it at home.

Best locally roasted coffee beans?

I make my coffee at home and have been looking for the best local roasters to try out! I mostly go for dark roasts and espresso beans, but I'm not opposed to medium and light roasts. (Bonus points if the beans are very low in acidity and have more nutty/chocolate notes than fruity.)

I've tried Bird and Bear, Linea, and Hedge so far. Thinking of trying Graffeo, Andytown, or St Franks next, but I want to hear about all the other ones I might not know about!

Is the very back row at AMC Metreon IMAX any good?

I got tickets to The Odyssey 70mm but the only ones that were available without killing my neck were in the very back in row N. I heard somewhere on here that row has a balcony that you can see in your upper peripheral view.

Does anyone know if that will affect my view of the screen?
In other words, does it cut off the view of the top of the screen at all?

If anyone has a picture from that row that would help me immensely too lol.

Hinata vs Chisai Sushi Club

Looking for a moderately priced sushi omakase and i’ve narrowed it down to these two options! I looked into Robin and Oma as well, but I’m currently most interested in these two as they are very close in price (~$125), have a similar number of nigiri offerings as part of the menu (12 pieces), and seem to be well liked by most.

I understand that Chisai Sushi is a little bit more “experimental”?

And is Hinata is a bad part of town? I’m not from SF, but i’ve heard people talk about the tenderloin

Just wanting to know people’s experience of each! Especially if you’ve been to both.

Looking for special experience ideas for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary

Hey folks! I recently moved to San Francisco and my parents from the Midwest are going to be visiting soon. They're recently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and I'm looking for some type of experience to treat them to during their visit.

Years ago we did a sailing cruise on an old America's Cup yacht and they absolutely loved it, so much that they've talked about doing it again, so that is a thought.

Other specific interests of theirs include spirits & cocktails (especially gin & whiskey), seafood (but not necessarily expensive or pretentious), viewpoints, live music, things like that. They're both in good physical shape and have been to the city several times over the years, including wine country, so they've seen all the main tourist points.

Best overnight public transit route to SFO airport from Market Street?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m staying in downtown SF soon and have a 6:30am flight out of SFO. Normally I’d simply take BART—I’d done it before—but I’ve never had a flight that early so BART is kind of out of the question. Any night buses that serve the airport?

Weekend Side Hustle for Extra Cash

Upvotes

I (30F) am beginning a graduate program in August and moving to SF. It's the first time I haven't had a job in my entire adult life (I have usually had one full time job and a couple side gigs) so I am kind of stressed. Since it's a new city to me and I won't have a car, I'm wondering what is in demand.

  • I have a lot of experience in nannying and pet sitting (or house sitting).
  • I also frequent my local plasma donation spot to get a hundred or so bucks a week.
  • I'm not oppose to cleaning houses, cooking, being a hostess or bartender, or call centers as long as it's a weekend only gig.

Let me know if any of these sound good or bad for the city or if you have any side hustles you'd like to suggest.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

Amazing food spots

Friends are in town for two days, they requested omakase so I landed on chisai sushi club (open to suggestions if this spot isn’t the “best”), and then looking for suggestions on what the other day could be

I recommended ramen which they love, but one person is allergic to pork so I’ve been trying to find a spot that is really good and serves something like chicken broth

Aside from that, any recommendations that people have?

Where can I get some sourdough starter

I'm traveling to San Francisco for 3 days from Houston and I want to bring back some starter for a friend. Are there any places that hand out or sell their starter? I was thinking The Mill perhaps.

Anyone know a sports medicine doctor that specializes in knee and foot pain/injury

Have some minor intermittent injuries from sports I'd like to have checked out but can't find a doctor that covers both. If you know a sports medicine doctor in general though that can help with either of these areas knee or foot lmk

Edit:
I see people some people recommend pt, I’d appreciate any recommendations for pt places in sf that accept insurance
