Can Anyone Recommend a Ceramic Artist for a Custom Commission

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a pottery or ceramic artist/studio that accepts custom commissions.

I'm hoping to have a custom ceramic figure made as a gift—something inspired by a grand piano-themed cake, but recreated in ceramic. If you create commissioned pieces or know an artist who does, I'd love to see your work or get your recommendations.

Thank you in advance!

big birthday dinner recommendations!

Upvotes

Hello! I'm celebrating my birthday in SF at the end of august next month with 10 of my friends (party of 11, total) and am having trouble figuring out a dinner spot that is yummy with a nice interior but still reasonable price-wise.

I'm trying to structure the night like so: wine bar -> nice dinner -> fun bar.

I was considering a night out in North Beach, with the itinerary being Waystone -> booking the private Dough Room at Flour + Water -> Spec's Museum Cafe, but the Dough Room seems weirdly siloed off from the rest of the restaurant. I'd love to hear what people's experiences at Flour + Water have been like esp with larger groups.

I'm also considering doing this in the Mission instead, because there are lots of wonderful dinner spots there. The problem is that having a big birthday dinner with 11 people immediately pushes us out of the main dining room and into prix fixe menus at most places.

Does anyone have any recommendations for neighborhoods, dinner spots that are reasonable for a large group, and where to find good ambiance? I really want to be able to walk to dinner from a wine bar and then hit somewhere fun after.

Thanks in advance!

Stonestown Regal RPX?

Upvotes

I have given up on trying to see the Odyssey in IMAX at the Metreon. I've seen some people on Reddit say that RPX can be a pretty good sub, depending on the specific theater and I was wondering if anyone knew how the RPX at Regal in Stonestown was? I've seen some people day the screen size can be close to "liemax" and was curious.

Thank you!

Ask: Writing class with nonfiction or memoir focus

Upvotes

Ask: Looking for remote or in person SF based writing class as a forcing function to write. I haven't taken a writing course in A LONG time, so beginner friendly helpful. Specifically hoping for nonfiction/memoiresque in terms of topic/genre/style. Thanks BWT!

How hard is it to rent in the TL?

Everyone is always commenting on how challenging the rental market is here in SF (and I do not doubt that), but I’m curious does this hold true for studio apartments in the TL as well? Are people getting in bid wars, getting no response, showing up for open houses with so many other people, etc.?

Coming For Day 2 of Outsidelands - Recommendations

Hi All - will have two free evenings. My gf and I are from Southern California. Would like to take her out to an experience. Not a restaurant with the best view of the bay or the most expensive place in town. But an SF only experience. Maybe an amazing spot/hole in the wall in Chinatown?

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How do you meet people in SF as a shy person in your late 20s?

I recently moved here from the Pacific Northwest and am trying to figure out how people actually meet others and build a social life in SF. I’m in my late 20s, male-identifying, and pretty shy/introverted at first. After living in Seattle for a while, I think I got a little too used to minding my own business and not striking up conversations with people. Now that I’m here, I’d like to make more of an effort to get out of that habit.

I’m a photographer and enjoy wandering around the city on foot with my camera, finding good coffee shops, hiking, exploring new neighborhoods, and having interesting or deeper conversations.

I’m not necessarily looking to immediately make super close friends either. Even just meeting new people, having someone to grab coffee with, go on a walk or hike, explore the city, or hang out casually would be great.

For people who moved to SF without already having a social circle here, what actually worked for you? Are there particular groups, recurring events, photo walks, hiking groups, classes, meetups, or just places where it feels relatively natural to meet and talk to people?

Especially curious to hear from other shy or introverted people who had to push themselves a little to become more social here. And if any of this sounds like your kind of thing, don’t hesitate to reach out too!

Apartment hunt in October vs December/January?

I recently moved to the Bay Area, and my company has me in temporary housing in South Bay. I know I want to live in SF once this temporary housing ends (I am queer and in my 20s, so losing my mind in South Bay), but am debating timing.

My company stops paying for the temporary housing at the end of September, but I have the option to pay to extend it. So I could potentially move after that in October, December, November, or January. Due to upcoming travel, I might prefer to wait anyway.

A few few questions:
1) For those who have moved in December or January, did you actually get a deal on rent?

2) Was it hard to find decent housing in SF in December or January? I have heard inventory is low that time of year.

Curious about what others experiences have been

Haircut consultation + cut for male mid 20s?

hey y’all!

just moved up and im looking for a good place to my hair cut.

i don’t want a fade or barbershop-style cut. i have medium length-ish hair, and i would like something more stylish (ex timothee chalamet type cuts). longer, layers, etc

id love to sit down w the hair stylist and ask them for opinions on what would realistically look good on me. im fine spending up to like $120ish on a haircut.

anyone have any good spots?

Weekend Side Hustle for Extra Cash

I (30F) am beginning a graduate program in August and moving to SF. It's the first time I haven't had a job in my entire adult life (I have usually had one full time job and a couple side gigs) so I am kind of stressed. Since it's a new city to me and I won't have a car, I'm wondering what is in demand.

  • I have a lot of experience in nannying and pet sitting (or house sitting).
  • I also frequent my local plasma donation spot to get a hundred or so bucks a week.
  • I'm not oppose to cleaning houses, cooking, being a hostess or bartender, or call centers as long as it's a weekend only gig.

Let me know if any of these sound good or bad for the city or if you have any side hustles you'd like to suggest.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)

Getting folks more involved in the creative space?

I run a monthly creative workshop in the City, to really get more folks active with their creative muscles and meet others that regonize the importance of setting time to connect and innovate.

This weekend on Saturday, 7/25 I'm inviting attendees to the Jean Henry School of Art to participate in an Art Swap - to bring or make handmade pieces to swap with other creatives.

I've flyered in various districts, attend art spaces, and post on various platforms online. Would love advice on getting the word to get out, or spreading word!

Best overnight public transit route to SFO airport from Market Street?

Hi! I’m staying in downtown SF soon and have a 6:30am flight out of SFO. Normally I’d simply take BART—I’d done it before—but I’ve never had a flight that early so BART is kind of out of the question. Any night buses that serve the airport?

Jewelry stores (Jade, 24K gold, or diamonds)

Hi!

I’m celebrating my mom’s 70th birthday in the city this weekend and would love to buy her a special piece of jewelry while we’re there.

I’m looking for reputable jewelers that carry 24K gold and jade pendants.

Alternatively, I’d also consider a pair of diamond earrings. I’m hoping to find a jeweler with a great selection so she can browse and choose something she truly loves.

TIA!!!

Amazing food spots

Friends are in town for two days, they requested omakase so I landed on chisai sushi club (open to suggestions if this spot isn’t the “best”), and then looking for suggestions on what the other day could be

I recommended ramen which they love, but one person is allergic to pork so I’ve been trying to find a spot that is really good and serves something like chicken broth

Aside from that, any recommendations that people have?

Curly Hair Stylist?

I have naturally 3b curly hair and my stylist moved away. Does anyone know of a stylist who has naturally curly hair? That’s my rule. Stylists who have curly hair probably know how to cut curly hair. The salon I used to go to recommended a different stylist who got a perm once and then a different stylist whose hair gets slightly wavy when wet. I’m looking for someone who specializes in curls. In internet searches I’ve found one or two individuals who charge $300+/hr and aren’t taking new clients. I just want a basic trim twice a year.

Burnt out former techies: What are you doing for work now?

Hi there!

I would love to hear from former tech workers that left the industry due to burnout and ended up doing something completely different. OR even if you left for awhile and went back to tech, what type of work did you do during that time? Did you go to school or focus on part-time work to help with your recovery?

I'm not necessarily looking for advice here. I just want to hear what others are doing outside of tech and gather some inspiration for other career paths.

Fermented Tea Leaves

Is there anywhere in SF where one can buy fermented tea leaves? I can't be paying Burma Superstar prices for every time I need my tea leaf salad fix (which is often). Would love to be able to make it at home.

Metreon Odyssey Tix

Hey all! I’m visiting SF for the first time on August 5-8. I was really hoping to see the Odyssey in 70mm and didn’t realize it would still be pretty booked through mid-August. My small city has a nice AMC theater with Dolby, but it rarely books out so I wasn’t anticipating tickets still being basically sold out (aside from the front couple rows). It would be my first true 70mm imax experience.

If anyone is planning on cancelling their tickets for any of the showtimes, I’d really appreciate a heads up so I can snag your seats. Figured it’s a long shot but might be worth it. I’m very excited to be in the city and explore regardless and would love any first-time visiter advice/recommendations!
