hey all! I recently copped my first thinkpad. at first on balanced mode the fan was pretty loud considered i spent 1.4k on this thing. i couldn’t find a quiet mode on lenovo vantage, so i just put it fo power effenciency mode. i’m going to remove all the windows debloatware, but, for intel ultra core 7 258v, i’ve found it having similar loading times or spinning circle youtube browser similar or slower than my moms 3 year old hp laptop. performance is kind of choppy. any suggestions? Not sure if I should return it and go back to macbook.

Edit: It runs fast now with things like steam, documents, excel, but for some reason firefox and web browsing is slow.

Edited: I fixed it! I changed refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz, and now it’s really smooth and fast. I was wondering why it was going slow. Awesome! Keeping it now :)

It's the first time I've done this. It's a company notebook and the previous user had worn it down a lot that even the hinges didn't work. I wasn't going to hand this over to an new user like that and since everything is expensive now I got to try it. I broke the original touch screen in a corner, which I don't mind so much since it was worn and the new one was very cheap.

You will need more that just he covers since some parts are not all there. I didn't know the process so I ended up making 6 purchases in total for the following items. CLP price is Chilean money. I've add the currect USD price for you. You will notice that some accesorios are far more expensive than expected and that the screen was actually very cheap... I think. I feel the most expensive thing were the graphite sheets that are somewhat optional.

I'm very satisfied with this laptop so far.

I was going to get two Macbook Neo for my two daughters so they can have a computer for HighSchool years, but, after installing Linux Mint on an old T520 here, it got me wondering, which "old" thinkpad model or cheap current one, might be a good pair with linux that compares with the mac stability and ease of use?

On the linux side, any recommendations for a light distro like Mint but with parental controls built in?

Sidegrade from a dell Precision 5540 i9 9880H Quadro T2000 4K touch that was completely fine but i really wanted a trackpoint and a better igpu for 4K desktop use without stuttering.

Originally i bought a dead P1G4 with A4000 quadro but it couldnt be fixed so i bought a T1200 full laptop for like (440$) with broken batt,2K glossy screen has polarizer marks and a worn chasis. Took the working mobo out and put on the P1G4 chasis of the A4000 that is still quite good. It even had 320 cycles 78% battery health with the optional carbon fiber cover so its quite nice.

Been using it for a week now and my only complaint is the fan curve is stupid loud when on AC but with some tweaks it works. Loving it so far

i found randomly for like 20$ like 4 months ago with no ssd, some non working keys, with a red tinge on the edges of the screen, broken batt.

Knowing it is the i7 model and it had the wacom pen i instantly bought it

Bought it to mess around and attempt to use it for drawing because of the wacom pen support but never ended up finding the pen and the screen somehow hurts my eyes after a while🥲 so now its just a backup and a burner laptop if i would like to mess around with things or in case my main laptop decides to not work.

I got it few weeks ago before I discovered this reddit. It was in brand new condition for 400€. Was it a good deal ?
(I will add 16 more gigs of ram in dual channel and will dual boot it with fedora)

I'm planning to buy a new laptop and keep it for at least 6 years.

My budget allows either:

• ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 (16GB RAM)
• MacBook Air M4 (16GB RAM)

Unfortunately, the 32GB ThinkPad is out of my budget, so I'd have to go with the 16GB version.

Primary use:

• Programming
• Light Data Science
• Docker
• VS Code
• Multiple browser tabs

My biggest concern is longevity.

I want a laptop that will:

• Last around 6 years or more
• Stay reasonably fast over time
• Be repairable or upgradeable if possible

For those who have used either:

1. Is 16GB enough for the next 6 years?
2. Is the upgradeability of the T14 a big enough advantage over the MacBook Air?
3. If you were buying today with the goal of keeping it for 6+ years, which would you choose and why?

I'd really appreciate opinions from people who have owned these machines long-term rather than just benchmark comparisons.

Hello everyone, last week i bought the T480s which finally arrived yesterday and i decided to share some stuff with you.

When i picked it up from the delivery box i was a bit scared. The box it was sent in was beaten from all sides and it looked like it would fall apart soon. Luckily, the seller packed it well and even included a new power adapter (aftermarket but good quality). When it comes to the condition of the laptop, it has seen better days. Top shell has a good amount of deep scratches and so does the bottom. Luckily the inside is clean and looks nearly mint.

Here are the specs of my machine:

16GB DDR4 RAM (8GB soldered + 8GB added by the seller)

Intel Core i5-8350U

256GB nvme from Sandisk

1920x1080 OLED screen (didnt expect that)

LTE modem (seller missed it)

Battery with 90% health (606 cycles)

No additional GPU (only UHD 620)

That all seems quite nice for 140 euros but some things didnt go as expected. My first issue was the power adapter. Even tho the seller has included a brand new power brick (which is neat), he didnt include a new power lead so he threw in the old Thinkpad one. That wouldnt be a problem if rubber reversion didnt exist. It was so sticky to the point where it made some sticky mess on the top shell and also my hands :( I have ordered a new one for around 2 dollars so its gonna be fine. Another disaster was Windows 11 which was preinstalled by the seller. It was somewhat snappy at first but after all the updates it became somewhat choppy and unresponsive, so i decided to install Linux Mint.

How does this laptop hold up in 2026? Its still great (with Linux)! It handles web browsing with multiple tabs or video on demand like a monster. Everything is near instant and the CPU barely hits 30-40% usage when playing a 1440p Youtube video and having another Firefox session open with multiple tabs. When it comes to coding i expected it to struggle but it has proven me wrong. Pycharm consumes around 90% of the CPU power when starting up but when you open or create a project the usage averages between 12 to 18%, nice. Built in keyboard is really nice to use (infact im typing on it rn). Really clicky with a lot of travel.

For me, the best part of this machine is the display. I didnt buy it for games or video editing but as a "portable" work-horse for "office" work, school projects, coding on the go and for video streaming. I was warned about the IPS 1080p screens which suck (washed out colors, poor viewing angles etc.). However the OLED one is so amazing :) Colors look great and i didnt notice any issues with the viewing angles. Also the battery surprisingly holds up well. 2h of streaming + Linux install and around 3 hours of web browsing and i still have 57% left.

Conclusion:

If you see this machine for 100-150 euros and you want a simple reliable laptop, go for it. However dont pay over that, its not gonna be worth it. It is still decent for work, web browsing and even coding but it cant handle video editing and games.

ThinkPad L470 (i3-7100U, 12GB of 2133MHz DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 11, Intel HD Graphics 620). The game is Scrap Mechanic. It runs smooth with almost 100 FPS on lighter worlds, tho. She's chugging in this world because it has a lot of heavy in graphics processing elements.

Still, that's still a good performance when it comes to a dual-core CPU
