Feels unreal! Shoutout to Franck Deng, the legend behind this beast - it’s an unbelievable piece of engineering art. Not all heroes wear a mask!

Thinkstagram Picture Bought a ThinkPad E14 gen 6 for £250. Only flaw is that it is missing the track point nub.

I've heard that the E series weren't particularly well made but this thing feels just as sturdy as my T14 gen 1. This is gonna be my uni laptop, most likely

Edit - Specs

Ryzen 5 7535U

512GB NVMe

16GB of DDR5 ram

Warranty still active until 2030 as well.

I'm very satisfied with this laptop so far.

I was going to get two Macbook Neo for my two daughters so they can have a computer for HighSchool years, but, after installing Linux Mint on an old T520 here, it got me wondering, which "old" thinkpad model or cheap current one, might be a good pair with linux that compares with the mac stability and ease of use?

On the linux side, any recommendations for a light distro like Mint but with parental controls built in?

Thanks!

Thinkpad P1 Gen 4 that is somewhat frankensteined

-I7 11850H Quadro T1200 32/1TB+512GB 4K matte non touch

EOS Hyprland w End4 Dotfiles + Windows 10 iot ltsc Dualboot

Sidegrade from a dell Precision 5540 i9 9880H Quadro T2000 4K touch that was completely fine but i really wanted a trackpoint and a better igpu for 4K desktop use without stuttering.

Originally i bought a dead P1G4 with A4000 quadro but it couldnt be fixed so i bought a T1200 full laptop for like (440$) with broken batt,2K glossy screen has polarizer marks and a worn chasis. Took the working mobo out and put on the P1G4 chasis of the A4000 that is still quite good. It even had 320 cycles 78% battery health with the optional carbon fiber cover so its quite nice.

Been using it for a week now and my only complaint is the fan curve is stupid loud when on AC but with some tweaks it works. Loving it so far

Thinkpad X201T

i found randomly for like 20$ like 4 months ago with no ssd, some non working keys, with a red tinge on the edges of the screen, broken batt.

Knowing it is the i7 model and it had the wacom pen i instantly bought it

-I7 620LM with 256GB ssd i got from W540 w Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3

Bought it to mess around and attempt to use it for drawing because of the wacom pen support but never ended up finding the pen and the screen somehow hurts my eyes after a while🥲 so now its just a backup and a burner laptop if i would like to mess around with things or in case my main laptop decides to not work.

Question / Problem my first thinkpad— x1 carbon gen 13

hey all! I recently copped my first thinkpad. at first on balanced mode the fan was pretty loud considered i spent 1.4k on this thing. i couldn’t find a quiet mode on lenovo vantage, so i just put it fo power effenciency mode. i’m going to remove all the windows debloatware, but, for intel ultra core 7 258v, i’ve found it having similar loading times or spinning circle youtube browser similar or slower than my moms 3 year old hp laptop. performance is kind of choppy. any suggestions? Not sure if I should return it and go back to macbook.

Edit: It runs fast now with things like steam, documents, excel, but for some reason firefox and web browsing is slow.

Edited: I fixed it! I changed refresh rate from 60Hz to 120Hz, and now it’s really smooth and fast. I was wondering why it was going slow. Awesome! Keeping it now :)

Buying Advice ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 (16GB) vs MacBook Air M4 (16GB) for 6+ years?

I'm planning to buy a new laptop and keep it for at least 6 years.

My budget allows either:

  • ThinkPad T14 Gen 6 (16GB RAM)
  • MacBook Air M4 (16GB RAM)

Unfortunately, the 32GB ThinkPad is out of my budget, so I'd have to go with the 16GB version.

Primary use:

  • Programming
  • Light Data Science
  • Docker
  • VS Code
  • Multiple browser tabs

My biggest concern is longevity.

I want a laptop that will:

  • Last around 6 years or more
  • Stay reasonably fast over time
  • Be repairable or upgradeable if possible

For those who have used either:

  1. Is 16GB enough for the next 6 years?
  2. Is the upgradeability of the T14 a big enough advantage over the MacBook Air?
  3. If you were buying today with the goal of keeping it for 6+ years, which would you choose and why?

I'd really appreciate opinions from people who have owned these machines long-term rather than just benchmark comparisons.

Question / Problem L14 Top Panel kind of bent

I kind of noticed that my thinkpad top panel is more curved than it should be. I dropped it recently but feel like it was like this before. Right hinge is also not fully straight. Warranty ended but i could prolong it, but i would assume they wouldn't fix this for me. I wanna fix it myself, what would you do?

Buying Advice Never owned a thinkpad, which one should I get?

Upvotes

Looking for a new laptop I keep hearing thinkpads are the best.

My budget is $500-800 USD but I can go to $900 if it’s that much of an upgrade. I’m fine with refurbished ones from reputable sources (you guys would know who’s reputable more than me).
I’m a student incase there’s any with student discounts.

Can’t need any work. I know nothing about computers. Needs to be ready to use how it is. Will be using Windows 11.

Usage:

100% online college work and classes (multiple zoom classes, student portal, blackboard, any other software colleges typically have students use)

Research with lots of tabs (I research topics about 2x days a week with 30+ tabs at a time)

Light gaming (webkinz downloaded version, flashpoint)

Light business work (quickbase, spreadsheets, word docs)

Other software: Krita, silhouette studio, might try to get into short-form video editing once or twice a month for my business.

Preferences:

Screen size: I like 14” screens but could handle 15”

Battery life: at most I’d take one in person class for 3 hours, so I guess 3 hour battery life minimum for doing school work.

My current laptop, which is OK but getting a bit slow and has been acting a bit buggy lately.

16GB ram

Processor AMD Ryzen 3 3250U with Radeon graphics (2.60 GHz)

238GB storage (218GB used)

Graphics card: AMD Radeon graphics 2GB

Discussion / Information People with multiple thinkpads, what do you do with all of them?

All of the thinkpads I ended up with I accidentally won on Ebay, like I didn't expect a low-bid to win. I also ended up selling nearly all of mine, thankfully for nearly the price I bought them for.

For me, the two laptops I kept, one is for keeping at home and the other is to bring on the go.

Buying Advice Replacement battery and IPS 1080P screen upgrade.

Hello, I was wondering where I could purchase an IPS 1080P upgrade and a (reliable) 9 cell battery for my T420 that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, I really don’t care about shipping times, just a battery that won’t burn me or my house down. Anyway, where can I purchase these items?

I want to replace my battery becuase it’s really showing its age, it hardly carries a charge, secondly a screen upgrade could really benefit me as TN 720p just really doesn’t look good. My budget is up too £175 for these parts which I’m sure is enough.
